There’s only one place in the world to be for the biggest and best New Year’s Eve – Sydney! JOIN MORE THAN A MILLION people lining the Sydney Harbour foreshore, as well as billions watching across Australia and around the world, as Sydney welcomes in 2019. The official program of events kicks off at 6pm with an aerial display taking over the skies above Sydney Harbour. After that, fire tugs create striking water displays against the setting sun, followed by a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony at 7.30pm, where a Gadigal Elder will welcome visitors to Gadigal land from aboard a Tribal Warrior vessel, as eucalyptus smoke cleanses the harbour of any bad spirits.

ON THE STREET

See photos from eras gone by in this new exhibition. THE MUSEUM OF SYDNEY presents “Street Photography”, a new

exhibition exploring the heyday of this once popular genre of photography. Street photographers were a familiar part of central Sydney during the 1930s–late 1950s, creating a vast archive of black-and-white candid images. Following a hugely successful public call-out, 250 personal images have been digitised and enlarged, giving a glimpse into the everyday life of Sydney and its people during the Depression, WWII and postwar years. Alongside these photos, photomedia artist Anne Zahalka, has restaged nine of the original images, with descendants and those still living in similar locations where their parents, grandparents or they once stood. From 8 December, Museum of Sydney, cnr Phillip and Bridge Streets, Sydney. Free with museum entry: Adult: $15, Concession: $8, Family: $30, Members and children under 5: free. 9251 5988. slm.com.au

WHE RE I D E C E M B E R 2018

AN OUTSTANDING EXHIBITION OF WORK by the late South African photographer David Goldblatt is now on show at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA). David Goldblatt was one of the greatest photographers of our time, noted for his portrayal of South Africa during the rise and dismantling of Apartheid. With their intense human focus, his photographs offer powerful reflection and insight into South Africa’s people, places and history. This exhibition looks back across his career through key photographic series, as well as Goldblatt’s only Australian work exploring the asbestos mining industry in the West Australian ‘ghost town’ of Wittenoom. This exhibition, curated by MCA Chief Curator Rachel Kent in close collaboration with the artist, marks over seven decades of Goldblatt’s photography. Presented in groups and extended series, his photographs encompass the history

of South Africa’s mining industry, white middle class, forced segregation of black and Asian communities into townships under the Group Areas Act, and stories of the country’s ex-offenders and their crimes. They also include Goldblatt’s parallel documentation of South African and Australian asbestos mining, including the West Australian ‘ghost town’ of Wittenoom and the human cost of this industry. “David Goldblatt: Photographs 1948– 2018” was the photographer’s final project before he passed away in June 2018. This exhibition encompasses the entire scope of his career featuring his key black-and-white and colour photographic series, as well as early vintage prints, it is contextualised by never-before seen material from his personal archive, a new feature-length documentary screened alongside the exhibition, plus an audio guide with David Goldblatt talking on some of his most renowned works. The exhibition is part of the Sydney International Art Series and is exclusive to Sydney. Ticketed exhibition, Adult $24, Concession $19, Family $59. Until 3 March, 2019, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, George Street, The Rocks. mca.com.au

A Very Sydney Christmas A taste of the North Pole comes to Sydney for a month full of fun. By Zac Lewis CHRISTMAS CHEER IS SPREADING through Sydney this December. Countless events transform the city into a wonderland for all. The City of Sydney has worked tirelessly to bring a magical Christmas to the sunny city for 2018. With over $3.1 million dollars invested you’ll be sure to get your Christmas fix. For the kids, there’s no shortage of events. On 1 December Surry Hills’ Prince Alfred Park will become an oasis of song and dance with the Sydney Christmas Children’s Concert. Jimmy Giggle, Justine Clarke, Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom, The Listies and SplashDance will all grace the stage. Kids can also indulge their senses in numerous craft activities, table tennis, giant Jenga and playing with the cheeky Christmas elves. As the night comes to a close there will be a special visit from Santa followed by a spectacular fireworks display. Celebrate Christmas in Green Square on 2 December with performances from Sam Moran, Sydney Philharmonia Choir, Ally Boom Boom & the Cool Bananas, DJ Peter Baecker and Glorious Sousaphonics. Other family-friendly Village Christmas Concerts take place in Alexandria on 7 December, Rushcutters Bay on 8 December and Rosebery on 9 December. Lover of carols are not left out. Right up to Christmas Eve, choirs will perform classic Christmas carols every night at the Martin Place Christmas Tree. Meanwhile, Pitt Street Mall’s Canopy of Light will turn the shopping strip into a winter wonderland illuminated by 94,000 lights sparkling along the boulevard. Choirs in the City will perform each Thursday from 6pm–8pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 6pm–7pm. On 22 December Carols in the Domain will unite the nation in a chorus of song from Australia’s biggest stars. 2018 celebrates the Carols’ 36th year and will see an estimated

28

WHE RE I D E C E M B E R 2018

50,000 people watching from the Domain and many thousands more watching from home. The Lights of Christmas will bring the gorgeous St Mary’s Cathedral to life. Running from 5–25 December, light and sound will be projected onto the Cathedral’s 75-metre-tall facade. From 7.30pm you can catch choir performances, before the 8.30pm–midnight projections which tell the stories and themes of Christmas. At the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, Australia’s biggest Christmas festival, Sydney Santa Spectacular, will take place. From 7–27 December the North Pole will be transported to the Racecourse. The festival encourages the spirit of giving, with a 15-metre tall charity Christmas tree encouraging guests to place gifts for sick and needy kids. The family-run event encourages affordability with one ticket allowing for unlimited rides, activities, entertainment and parking. Rides and events include a portable ice-rink, Santa’s Enchanted Forest, featuring live snowfall, interactive costumed characters, face-painting, a vintage double-decker carousel, and Christmas cookie-decorating workshops. Many Christmas markets are also taking place around Sydney. The Watsons Bay Twilight Markets will be held in Robertson Park form 3pm–9pm on 7 December. Featuring 120 stalls selling women’s fashions, menswear, childrens’ clothing, toys, ceramics jewellery and more you are sure to find what you need. Closer to the CBD is The Rocks Christmas Markets. They run Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and feature roaming entertainers, art installations, street food, and of course, stallholders. With so much Christmas cheer you are in for a magical treat this year. For more information visit, sydneychristmas.com.au

Harbour Town mp ac whales spectac lar rewor s an internationally renowned yacht race and a world famous opera house. SYDNEY’S ICONIC HARBOUR HAS pretty much seen it all since then Lieutenant James Cook arrived aboard the Endeavour in 1770 and named it Port Jackson. It was here that the first settlers set up camp in 1788 and the harbour has been an important part of city life ever since, used for transportation and recreation. Little wonder it is widely regarded as the greatest leisure harbour in the world. On any given day, the harbour is alive with boats of all shapes and sizes, be it passenger ferries, state-of-the-art yachts or kayakers. This is particularly true during the traditional Boxing Day launch of the Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race, when hundreds of craft follow the racers out of the harbour. And on New Year’s Eve, there’s no better spot to be than on a boat beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge as the breathtaking fireworks display takes place in the skies above. While the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House are its two most famous landmarks, the harbour has plenty more sights up its sleeve. Circular Quay, Luna Park and Anzac Bridge are all accessible and visible from the water along with hundreds of bays, coves, beaches and waterways. Several islands can also be found in the harbour, the most notable being Fort Denison, Shark Island and Cockatoo Island.

Australian opal is not only the world’s most fascinating and colourful gemstone, it can also be a sound long-term investment.

Fire from the Outback CALLED ‘THE RAINBOW STONE’ by Australia’s Aboriginal people, opal is without doubt one of nature’s most remarkable gifts. It is now recognised as one of the five precious gemstones in the world, along with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, and is an excellent investment. While small amounts of opals may be found in other countries such as Ethiopia, Mexico and the USA, Australia produces more than 90 per cent of the world’s supply. The romance of the opal is in the gem’s incredible ability to expose an infinite number of colours, forever moving with the light. Mined in the outback

32

WHE RE I D E C E M B E R 2018

of Australia across three states, it is as much the call of the outback that lures the opal miner and keeps them going. Scorched landscapes and blazing red sunsets, the night stars from horizon to horizon, this is a hauntingly beautiful country that penetrates one’s soul. The elusive opal was formed millions of years ago when liquid silica filtered down into the faults and fissures of sedimentary rock. When the water content evaporated, tiny spheres of silica remained and over time were solidified. The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that

each gem has an individual character. In 1964 the CSIRO (Australia’s national research laboratories) unlocked the riddle of why opals have such colours. Opal is composed of minute particles of silica in closely packed spherical aggregates. It is the varying arrangement of these particles (and, of course, cavities) that causes the reflected light to be split into the full range of colours of the spectrum. There are three main production areas in Australia for mining opals. There’s the bright and beautiful Queensland boulder opal which is mined around the Quilpie area in Western Queensland.

The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character.

T H E R A I N B O W S TO N E :

(Opposite page) Opals from Giulians. (Above) Jewellery designed by Fiona Altmann, Altmann + Cherny. (Left) Jewellery by Opal Minded.

Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is the home of the famous black opal which derives its name from the colour of the nobbies or pieces of rough opal in which the gems are usually found. The third area is Coober Pedy and Mintabie in South Australia. Coober Pedy is an Aboriginal name, meaning ‘white man in a hole’, which describes exactly what miners still do today—live underground to escape the fierce heat of summer. This is where the white or milk opals are mined. The value of an opal depends on the amount and brilliance of the colour, preferably being evenly distributed across the face of the polished gem. The greater the spectrum of colours from red to

violet, the better, with crimson, reds and orange being rarer than the greens and blues. Milkiness, cloudiness or greyness detracts from the value. Ideally, the greater the number of colours, the more prized the gem, and if these are arranged in a block pattern, more value is added. The extremes are pin-sized dots of colour (pinfire) to one large sheet of colour (broadflash) covering the whole stone. The elusive ‘harlequin’ is the ultimate in this form but is very rare. Shapes of the finished opal vary according to the characteristics of each stone. Boulder opal is usually cut in baroque or free form, whereas seam opal is at its best presented in cabochon (domed) form.

If you are buying an unset opal, it is important to consider the way it will eventually be worn. For example, some opals will offer a better play of colour when worn vertically, as in a brooch or pendant, whereas others are best flat, as in a ring setting. There is a great deal to consider when investing in your opal, but expert advice is available for your complete pleasure and pride in an ever-inspiring piece of jewellery. Above all, buy the opal colour that appeals to you. Enjoy your purchase, knowing it’s geologically millions of years old, but will give you pleasure every day of the year. Opals—truly nature’s own fireworks!

The Taphouse have taken a modern approach to traditional Aussie pub classics with snacks to share including pork scratchings, fried chicken wings, and mini hot dogs, as well as offering quality mains including the musttry chicken schnitzel and the Taphouse cheeseburger.

The Oaks Since 1885, The Oaks has been a local institution in the leafy suburb of Neutral Bay, north of the Harbour Bridge. A huge sprawling Oak tree presides over the beer garden which is perfect for a summer evening of crisp beer and salty bar snacks. Under the fading sun, sit back and enjoy one of Australia’s favourite pasttimes with a drink in hand (think craft beer, a classic cocktail, cider or glass of wine) and some delicious bar snacks. Fairy lights are strewn across the courtyard making this one of Sydney’s most picturesque watering holes.
