Set your alarm and indulge in a 1.5-hour ‘Sunrise Kayak and Coffee’ tour, one of the most unique ways to see the famous Sydney Harbour. Meet your guide at Lavender Bay for your safety briefing, life jacket fitting and setting up your kayak. Those without experience are not disadvantaged, the kayaks are extremely stable and easily maneuvered. Once your small group is ready to go, paddle your way out onto the glassy foreshores of Lavender Bay and Blues Point, just in time to watch the sun rise and reflect beautiful hues of golden pink across the calm waters. Sit and take in the serenity from your kayak with a hot coffee made fresh from a local café, there’s no better way to take in this iconic view! Adults $95, children $50. is a dazzling blend of dance, drag, circus, comedy and powerful spoken word. “Briefs: Close Encounters” is back after a sold-out season last year. You can expect an extravagant mix of circus, comedy and drag with feather dancing, hoop twirling, acrobatics and more. Circus Oz bring their Big Top to Parramatta to explore what it means to be a ‘model citizen’ in Australia today through awesome physicality, biting satire and highly skilled, unpredictable acrobatics. With an impressive cast of mesmerising aerialists, cheeky characters, daredevil acrobats, cigar box juggling, hula hooping and backyard banter, “Model Citizens” subverts the suburban dream. The performers swing from knife-dodging to acrobat-tossing, contorting through huge steaming irons to tumbling off a house of giant credit cards. The whole family will love the all-new Australian version of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, “Alice in Wonderland”. Written by award-winning playwright Mary Anne Butler, it stars Dubs Yunupingu as Alice, and is the first time the role has been played by an Indigenous woman. The show is recommended for ages seven and up. “The Wider Earth” is a coming-of-age play about science and faith. It recounts the tales of scientific discoveries on Charles Darwin’s voyage on the HMS Beagle and brings to life creatures great and small with incredibly crafted puppets. This immersive contemporary art installation by Japanese artist Hiroshi Fuji features discarded toys that have been turned into a giant ‘Toysaurus” amongst a sprawling landscape of colour. SHOPPING PINK DIAMONDS

An Enduring ACROSS THE BREADTH of 1.6 billion years, journeying from the crucible of the earth, emerges the most intriguing diamond in history. Revered for its exquisite beauty and provenance, the Argyle pink diamond is coveted as the most esteemed diamond in the world. While natural fancy coloured diamonds are scarce, Argyle pink diamonds are inherently so. So rare are they that less than an entire year’s worth of supply over half a carat would fit in the palm of one’s hand, while the number of red, blue and violet diamonds can be counted on one hand alone. The finest of each year’s discoveries, just 50-60 of these rare natural treasures are brought to life as polished masterpieces and offered for sale each year as part of the annual Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender, this year closing on 11 October. Rio Tinto’s Argyle Diamond Mine is the world’s only consistent source of pink diamonds, accounting for more than 90 percent of the world’s pink diamond supply; although this treasure trove will not continue in perpetuity. Argyle pink diamonds are increasingly sought-after—acquired by collectors and connoisseurs around the world for their personal holdings and bespoke jewellery creations. Prior to the 1980s, production of pink diamonds had been sporadic. Argyle pink diamonds, from a certifiable source and of a depth and range of colour never seen before, have commanded the world’s attention since their discovery in 1979. Unearthing these treasures, formed at a depth of over 160 kilometres below the earth’s surface, is a challenge both in size and complexity. It will take many careful hands for a rough Argyle pink diamond to journey from the mine to its final destination as a polished gem.

Calleija ‘L’Amour Rose’: From deep within the Argyle Diamond Mine, a rarity of nature is unveiled. Radiating light and unrivalled beauty, this intricate bloom of bejeweled artistry is the custodian of a spectacular 1.08ct Argyle Pink Tender Diamond.

Of all diamond colours, pink is the most intriguing. Unlike other coloured diamonds, the phenomena of pink diamonds remains in part a mystery. It is thought that the pink colour is created by a twist within the atomic lattice during formation, the result of immense heat and pressure beneath the earth’s surface—a fabulous fluke of nature. The finest and rarest diamonds are reserved for the annual Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender, which is widely referred to as the most exclusive diamond sale in the world. The event highlights a small number of important diamonds from the Argyle mine that stand apart from their peers in terms of vibrancy and intensity of colour. The 50 to 60 of the most extraordinarily rare pink, red and violet diamonds that are offered as part of the Tender represent less than 0.1 percent of diamonds ever unearthed from the Argyle Diamond Mine.

Elegance “Spectacular” Argyle pink diamonds are coveted by many, but owned by few. The Tender is an invitation-only event for specially selected diamantaires and collectors. Tender viewings are held around the globe with past Tenders having travelled to Antwerp, Geneva, London, Tokyo, Singapore, Mumbai, Sydney, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, New York and Copenhagen. Connoisseurs, collectors and luxury jewellers are invited to place sealed bids on the diamonds. Prices for these diamonds can exceed millions of dollars per carat. Since their arrival on the world stage in the 1980s, Argyle pink diamonds have thrilled, seduced and inspired jewellers from around the world to herald the gems’ light, life and colour. Argyle Pink Diamonds Select Ateliers, counted as the most trusted jewellers in the industry, are relied on for their unerring quality, integrity and spectacular creativity that traverses the classic to contemporary. Most importantly, they share a passion for perfection. These houses epitomise superlative craftsmanship, from every vantage point.

BUYING ABORIGINAL ART

BY SUSAN GOUGH HENLY

Tarisse King, “Big Water”, 2016, acrylic on linen, 90 x 150cm, from Aboriginal Art Galleries.

ABORIGINAL ART IS MYSTICAL and awe-inspiring and displays a

profound connection with the unique Australian landscape. It also offers an exciting journey of discovery into one of the world’s oldest surviving cultures. Yet because it is so different from Western art it can be difficult to know how to identify and buy authentic pieces. Here are some valuable insights into the incredible diversity of Aboriginal art and how to go about finding the best pieces to suit your budget. Archaeologists have dated Aboriginal rock art as far back as 40,000 years or more. Aboriginals have been creating other less permanent art forms, including body, bark and sand art, for untold centuries. Aboriginal culture is rooted in the land. There are not one but many different Aboriginal cultures spread across every part of Tommy Watson, “Ayers Rock”, 122 x 183cm, from Kate Owen Gallery.

the country. Each has its own language and complex belief system that explains the universe and the place of people within it. Because there are so many distinctive Aboriginal cultures there is also a great diversity of artistic styles and media, from the well-known dot paintings of the Western Desert to the Western Kimberley’s ghost-like Wandjina creation ancestors with huge mouthless faces. Traditional Aboriginal art practitioners do not see themselves as artists but as storytellers. Since there are no written languages, the making of artworks is all about sharing a spiritual association with a specific landscape or ‘country’, as well as communicating obligations to this ‘country’ through Dreaming stories and Songlines. The Dreamtime describes the time of creation when enormous mythic creatures roamed the Earth creating landforms and deciding which people could live in each special place. The stories are told via many different media. Traditionally, there was rock art, sand and body paintings as well as ochre bark paintings, wood carvings and fibre weaving, the latter portable art still available today. Contemporary Aboriginal art using Western acrylics on canvas began as recently as 1971 in the remote township of Papunya, west of Alice Springs, when a teacher named Geoffrey Bardon gave some acrylics to men in the community to paint a mural on the school wall. This was how the Western Desert Art movement began. Since then dozens of art centres have developed in tiny communities from Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley to Maningreda and Ngukkur in Arnhem Land. Each has art advisers who bring in canvases and paints and get the artworks to major urban markets.

ABORIGINAL ART SHOPPING

While the materials may be Western and while the colourful imagery may seem like versions of Abstract Expressionism, the most of these works evoke traditional dreaming stories or kinship with the land and its bush foods. As with any art form, there are authentic works and cheap imitations. It gets more complicated when you learn that most Indigenous works are not signed. You can, however, be assured that works are authentic if you buy from members of the Aboriginal Art Association of Australia, the Australian Commercial Galleries Association and the Indigenous Art Code. Those are the official names of the bluechip industry bodies that will provide the correct authentication and pay artists fair commissions. Professional art galleries specialising in Aboriginal art have knowledgeable and experienced staff who can provide excellent advice, as well as introducing you to both established and up-and-coming artists who work in the styles that most interest you. Remember to consider a wide range of artistic endeavours. If you are looking for an investment piece, large scale acrylic paintings tend to appreciate the most but you could also search out more affordable limited edition prints by established artists. There are also many other media to discover such as bark paintings, poles, weavings and screen-printed fabrics. All offer a powerful connection to Australia and its enduring Aboriginal culture. Remember, you don’t have to spend a fortune to take an authentic piece of Australia home with you.

doubt one of nature’s most remarkable gifts. It is now recognised as one of the five precious gemstones in the world, along with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, and is an excellent investment. Those who mine opal are attracted by the gem’s incredible ability to expose an infinite number of colours, forever moving with the light. In one of the most harsh environments imaginable, the opal miner toils, digging around in temperatures of up to 55 degrees celsius. That makes mining not only uncomfortable, but at times also life-threatening. Dehydration is a constant danger for the unwary, and impaired judgement caused by excessive heat makes life even more hazardous for those operating the heavy machinery on the large open cuts.

SHOPPING AUSTRALIAN OPALS

Opal set dress ring and pendant by Opal Minded.

Australia produces more than 90 per cent of the world’s supply of opal and there are three main production areas. There’s the bright and beautiful Queensland boulder opal which is mined around the Quilpie area in Western Queensland. Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is the home of the famous black opal which derives its name from the colour of the nobbies or pieces of rough opal in which the gems are usually found. The third area is Coober Pedy and Mintabie in South Australia. Coober Pedy is an Aboriginal name, meaning ‘white man in a hole’, which describes exactly what miners still do today—live underground to escape the fierce heat of summer. This is where the white or milk opals are mined. It is as much the call of the Outback that lures the opal miner and keeps them going. Scorched landscapes and blazing red sunsets, the night stars from horizon to horizon, this is a hauntingly beautiful country that penetrates one’s soul. The elusive opal was formed millions of years ago when liquid silica filtered down into the faults and fissures of sedimentary rock. When the water content evaporated, tiny spheres of silica remained and over time were solidified. The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character. In 1964 the CSIRO (Australia’s national research laboratories) unlocked the riddle of why opals have such colours. Opal is composed of minute particles of silica in closely packed spherical aggregates. It is the varying arrangement of these particles (and, of course, cavities)

28 WHERE SYDNEY I JANUARY 2018 I wheretraveler.com

that causes the reflected light to be split into the full range of colours of the spectrum. The value of an opal depends on the amount and brilliance of the colour, preferably being evenly distributed across the face of the polished gem. The greater the spectrum of colours from red to violet, the better, with crimson, reds and orange being rarer than the greens and blues. Milkiness, cloudiness or greyness detracts from the value. Ideally, the greater the number of colours, the more prized the gem, and if these are arranged in a block pattern, more value is added. The extremes are pin-sized dots of colour (pinfire) to one large sheet of colour (broadflash) covering the whole stone. The elusive ‘harlequin’ is the ultimate in this form but is very rare. Shapes of the finished opal vary according to the characteristics of each stone. Boulder opal is usually cut in baroque or free form, whereas seam opal is at its best presented in cabochon (domed) form. If you are buying an unset opal, it is important to consider the way it will eventually be worn. For example, some opals will offer a better play of colour when worn vertically, as in a brooch or pendant, whereas others are best flat, as in a ring setting. There is a great deal to consider when investing in your opal, but expert advice is available for your complete pleasure and pride in an ever-inspiring piece of jewellery. Above all, buy the opal colour that appeals to you. Enjoy your purchase, knowing it’s geologically millions of years old, but will give you pleasure every day of the year. Opals—truly nature’s own fireworks!

SYDNEY’S ICONIC HARBOUR has pretty much seen it all since then Lieutenant James Cook arrived aboard the Endeavour in 1770 and named it Port Jackson. It was here that the first settlers set up camp in 1788 and the harbour has been an important part of city life ever since, used for transportation and recreation. Little wonder it is widely regarded as the greatest leisure harbour in the world. On any given day, the harbour is alive with boats of all shapes and sizes, be it

passenger ferries, state-of-the-art yachts or kayakers. This is particularly true during the traditional Boxing Day launch of the Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race, when hundreds of craft follow the racers out of the harbour. And on New Year’s Eve, there’s no better spot to be than on a boat beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge as the breathtaking fireworks display takes place in the skies above. While the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House are its two most famous landmarks, the harbour has plenty more

sights up its sleeve. Circular Quay, Luna Park and Anzac Bridge are all accessible and visible from the water along with hundreds of bays, coves, beaches and waterways. Several islands can also be found in the harbour, the most notable being Fort Denison, Shark Island and Cockatoo Island. Historians will no doubt want to head round to Green Point in Watsons Bay where the remains of fortifications designed to protect the harbour from a submarine attack in World War II can still

THE ROCKS IS SYDNEY’S historic

old town quarter, where colonial and maritime history is preserved in every piece of hand-hewn sandstone, in the charming cobblestone streets and quaint heritage architecture. It’s where Sydney first began with the establishment of the English colony in 1788. Since then it has been home to sailors, whalers and traders. Its colourful history was saved by a union-led protest in the 1970s which preserved this unique part of Sydney for present and future generations to explore and enjoy. Today, The Rocks is a unique destination offering early colonial architecture, historic pubs, archaeological dig sites, modern restaurants, fabulous accommodation, unique shopping, galleries and museums, markets, live entertainment, leafy parks and spectacular views of Sydney Harbour. Take time to discover the stories behind every street corner and experience a precinct steeped in rich layers of history. To find it, take a 10-minute stroll down George Street (Sydney city’s main street) towards the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge—you can’t miss it. Alternatively, take a train or bus to Circular Quay and wander through First Fleet Park. To make the most of your visit to this unique precinct, make sure to drop into the Sydney Visitor Centre on the corner of Playfair and Argyle streets. The friendly staff can assist you in your exploration of Sydney’s historic village. For a truly pleasurable Sydney shopping experience, wander the cobblestone laneways of The Rocks and discover a haven of speciality stores, galleries and boutiques. Explore The Rocks Centre in the heart of the precinct for special shopping surprises. You’ll find fabulous fashion, chic accessories, fine food and sweet treats. For those unique mementos of your visit to Sydney, or travellers’ needs such as guide books and maps, don’t miss the Sydney Visitor Centre’s huge range of retail.

Japanese dishes, to Pony Lounge and Dining, a cutting-edge grill restaurant nestled along historic Kendall Lane. The Modern Australian menu includes wood-fired grilled meats, seafood and small plates. Housed within a heritage cellar in the heart of The Rocks, The Cut Bar & Grill presents Sydney with a contemporary twist on a traditional concept. Inspired by New York’s super-chic steak restaurants, the menu celebrates the very finest cuts of prime Australian beef and sustainable seafood. Every dish is cooked to perfection by head chef Joseph Webb, matched with impeccable service. For a wild night try El Camino Cantina. The Tex-Mex inspired restaurant mixes big flavours, big margaritas and two restored 1957 Chevy trunks overflowing with complimentary hot chips and salsas.

Flooded with neon lights and with a rock ‘n’ roll vibe, tequila and music flow ‘til the early hours. Fish at The Rocks on Kent Street offers a superb seafood menu and inside the restaurant images of the early 20th-century fishing boats that were moored around the area set the mood. For pure Bavarian fun in the heart of The Rocks head to Munich Brauhaus. Friendly staff serve all of your Bavarian favourites, and you can sing and dance along with the Oom Pah Pah Band’s traditional tunes. If you want a mouthwatering cocktail then try the stylish surrounds of The Argyle. The Argyle attracts local and international DJ talents in its gallery space, creating a fantastic atmosphere and bringing a metropolitan vibe to a busy night. A warm glow is cast throughout the venue by ornate, hanging chandeliers, which complement the plush velvets of rich pink, muted chocolates and gorgeous greens, splashed across the custommade furniture—all this combining to create the intimate feel that is The Argyle. This blended entertainment mecca brings a distinctive style to the Sydney scene—luxurious, sexy, and intimate— day or night, it is the place to be. If you’d prefer a beer with a view, head to the Harbour View Hotel. This icon beside an icon commands pride

Don’t forget The Rocks Foodies Market that takes place every Friday lunchtime. Stop for a delicious bite to eat and have a chat with the florist who has grown fresh flowers or the baker who has made fresh bread. There’s a fascinating mix of heritage attractions in The Rocks that bring Sydney’s history to life. Visit The Rocks Discovery Museum, a restored 1850s warehouse which is home to a unique collection of images and archaeological artefacts found in The Rocks dig sites. Just up the road at Susannah Place Museum, you get the very rare opportunity to reconstruct domestic working-class life within The Rocks neighbourhood between 1844 and 1989 and hear stories from former tenants. The S.H. Ervin Gallery is one of Sydney’s leading public art institutions housed in the historic National Trust Centre on Observatory Hill, The Rocks. The Gallery’s exhibition program is designed to explore the richness and diversity of Australian art, both historical and contemporary, and present it in new contexts. The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), at the harbour’s edge at Circular Quay, is dedicated to exhibiting, interpreting and collecting contemporary art from across Australia and around the world. The museum received a $AUD53 million renovation in 2012 and with a continually changing program of exhibitions there’s always something new, exciting and inspiring to see at the MCA. Climb 200 steps to the very top of the Pylon, where you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the city of Sydney. BY ROSHAN SUKHLA INSPIRED BY THE IZAKAYA BARS of Japan and with a serious nod to the iconic music of the 80s and 90s, Kid Kyoto is a welcome addition to the Sydney restaurant scene. As you enter Kid Kyoto through Bridge Lane, there’s a definate 90s-underground club vibe to the restaurant. A neon blue sign tells you to “come as you are”, while the industrial interior pays homage to both the punk and grunge scenes. With a hand-picked soundtrack of classic tunes playing from Nirvana to Portishead, Kid Kyoto is a feast for all your senses. The menu is divided into different musical sections. For the “Intro” we try the deep-fried deliciousness that is the carrot-aage with native pepper berry and orange kosho, which provides a nice little flavour kick. Next up, we go “Raw & Unplugged” with the beef tartare ‘teriyaki flavour’, nashi pear and whipped katsuobushi. Spoon the beef onto the sesame leaf and wrap it up before eating. It’s a fresh and flavourful experience. “Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage” as we head to the “Main Stage” with an audio side of Smashing Pumpkins. The Wagyu +4 sirloin with Red Hot Chilli Pepper miso and tsukemono looks tempting, but we choose the Soundgardeninspired ‘Black Hole Sun’ pork belly with nori jam, apple and pickled radish. It is mouthwateringly delicious in convenient cube sizes. We pair this with a “B-Side” of corn, nori and fish ‘chahan’ fried rice which is so moreish I keep going back for seconds (and thirds). The diverse drinks menu “Smells Like Mixed Spirits” offers beer, sake, wine, shochu, whisky and tea. I choose the signature Kid Kyo-tini cocktail which mixes Archie Rose ‘Kid Kyoto blend’ gin with Noilly Prat, Junmai Daiginjo saké, fennel and edamame shrub. Served in a pretty glass, it’s strong but I like it. My partner orders the Inn Bloom, a mix of Bloom gin, Shiso saké, grapefruit, yuzu, strawberry and thyme shrub. It is a beautiful pink colour, with a matching delicate floral taste. If you have room for an “Encore”, then there are some rather tasty dessert options including chocolate fondant with caramelised miso, chocolate crackle, kinako and coconut ice cream; or toasted yuzu meringue tart, green tea and blueberry. I finish my meal with a Tsuru Yuzushu. I sip this sweet and sour drink made from the yuzu fruit grown in Wakayama, as one of my favourite 90s one-hit wonders, Marcy Playground’s “Sex and Candy” comes over the speakers. It’s the perfect way to finish this Japanese trip back to the 90s, a seamless blend of iconic music and impeccable food. Kid Kyoto, Mon–Fri 12pm–3pm and 5pm–late, Sat 12pm–late. 17–19 Bridge Street (entry via Bridge Lane), Sydney. 9241 1991. kidkyoto.com.au

IT HAS BEEN A BUSY MONTH for

Sydney concierge, with our members enjoying the peak of our leisure travel season to Sydney. With full hotels, bustling restaurants and spectacular weather, summer is a fantastic time to be in Sydney. ■ It’s always great to see Sydney from on the water, and there are a variety of options to enjoy the harbour city in this way. Whether it be one of the many group cruises, exploring the harbour on your own private yacht or simply taking the ferry to Manly, seeing the city from the harbour gives a true perspective of our beautiful city. For directions, or a tailored recommendation just for you, don’t forget to see your concierge in the hotel lobby prior to heading out for the day. Look for the gold keys on their lapel to denote that they are a member of Les Clefs d’Or and say hello!

■ Coming shortly at the start of April, several members of Les Clefs d’Or Australia will travel to Seoul for our annual International Congress. This meeting of concierge from around the world is a fantastic chance for those who attend to make new friends and catch up with others. With a program that includes our general meeting along with a trade expo and information workshops, there won’t be much spare time for those who attend, but this is a highly rewarding journey for all. ■ Les Clefs d’Or Australia is a friendly society of hotel concierge. Our aim as an organisation is to promote tourism throughout Australia. Each and every member of Les Clefs d’Or strives to provide the utmost in caring, attentive service to their hotel guests, and our society motto ‘In Service through Friendship’ reflects the manner in which this is achieved.
