Q: Describe your perfect day in Sydney
A: I would start with a morning walk/run along the harbour foreshore in the Royal Botanic Garden, followed by a breakfast in one of the quaint cafés dotted around Sydney’s historic Rocks District. If it’s a weekend, linger longer for the weekend Rocks markets, which showcase local arts and crafts. Jump on the nearby ferry at Circular Quay to Manly. Stay for lunch in Manly and dine at one of the many cafés and restaurants that adjoin both the ocean and harbour beaches there. The ferry back to Circular Quay leaves you a short walk around the waterfront to the Opera Bar near the Opera House, where you can take in the picturesque views towards the harbour bridge whilst sipping on a local wine or a speciality cocktail. Q: What’s your favourite thing about Sydney in January?
A: Without doubt, one of Sydney’s numerous beaches is the place to be in January. Whether you’re after an open beach, something more secluded, an ocean beach or a harbour one, a city beach or one in a national park surrounded by natural bushland— Sydney has the beach
for you and the water temperature is just perfect in January. The annual Sydney Festival also commences in January and comprises a series of arts and culture based events suitable for all age groups, and appeals just as much to locals as it does to interstate and overseas visitors alike. The annual New Year’s Day cricket test is also played over a maximum of ve days commencin in the rst ee of January at the Sydney Cricket Ground and features Australia playing a visiting country. Q: With the weather heating up, where should people go to cool off?
A: If the beaches are not your thing and you’d prefer something indoors to escape the summer heat, try visiting the Museum of Contemporary Art or the Art Gallery of NSW. The Rocks Discovery Museum is an intriguing museum to explore the history and development of both Sydney and Australia.

Street Photography The Museum of Sydney presents “Street Photography”, an exhibition exploring the heyday of this once popular genre of photography. Street photographers were a familiar part of central Sydney during the 1930s–late 1950s, creating a vast archive of black-and-white candid images. CHALLENGE YOURSELF IN WAYS that are new and exciting this January at Sydney Festival. Festival Director Wesley Enoch says that this year’s festival incorporates themes of migration, the rebirth of language and risk taking. Through performance and art, Sydney Festival’s line-up up of events is sure to excite, thrill, mesmerise and awe. The festival runs from 9–27 January with mind-blowing experiences featuring across the entire three weeks. World-class theatre is sprinkled in healthy doses across Sydney’s stages. At the Roslyn Packer Theatre, experience “Beware of Pity”, a portrait of a faltering Europe on the doors of chaos presented by Schaubühne Berlin and directed by Simon McBurney. The production is a Sydney Festival exclusive and marks the show’s Australian premiere. Also on is “HOME”, a show brought to life by award-winning absurdist Geoff Sobelle, which ruminates on the deep meaning of belonging. You’ll see a house rise before you and see people live, eat, sleep and argue as they call the house their home. Working with Belvoir, the Sydney Festival brings the epic three-and-a-half-hour spectacle “Counting and Cracking” to Sydney Town Hall. This performance features sixteen actors playing four generations of a single family as they follow a Sri Lankan family struggling to settle into Sydney’s Western Suburbs. The play is served with a communal meal to bring you into the story. Sydney Festival’s Blak Out program sees Indigenous peoples from around the world tell their stories their way. “Man With The Iron Neck” addresses suicide among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youths with themes of hope and solace. “Biladurang” is an intimate and touching autobiographical solo work from Joel Bray as he tells his story up close and personal. For a hard-hitting performance see “Deer Woman” which follows a missing girl’s sister in a powerful story of righteous vengeance. For those wishing to expand
their multilingual tongues, check out “Bayala”. “Bayala” runs over multiple days with multiple sessions and provides an introductory experience into the local indigenous languages of the Darug, Gadigal, Eora and Yuwaalaraay peoples. The world-renowned Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent returns to Hyde Park. It features “Pigalle” a cabaret full of music and muscles fused with the discotheque music of the 70s, burlesque and circus extravagance starring Marcia Hines. Nakhane brings his emotive vocals to the stage alongside smooth synth-pop to sing about identity, queerness and growing up in South Africa. Les Filles de Illighadad are a trio of minimalist blues artists performing tunes traditionally played by men with rustic acoustic guitar lines, layered melodies and driving rhythms as they reinterpret gender roles and the music on the brink of the Sahara. Alongside music, theatre and performance there’s heaps of free, family-friendly events. With 2019 marking the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing, take the kids to “MAAS and the Moon” at the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences where there’s a diverse collection of astronomical history on display. Around Barangaroo South is “Apollo 11”, a series of eleven installation artworks and participatory experiences celebrating the history of the Apollo 11 mission. Head to Darling Harbour to jump on the “Moon Drops” and then pop into World Square to help the collective effort to cycle 384,400 kilometres to the moon. Sydney Festival draws to a close with the Australia Day “Ferrython” in which Sydney’s iconic ferries race around Sydney Harbour. There’s such a variety of showstopping and powerful events on this year that you are certain to find heaps to enjoy. Harbour Town Spectacular fireworks, an internationally renowned yacht race and a world famous opera house. SYDNEY’S ICONIC HARBOUR HAS pretty much seen it all since then Lieutenant James Cook arrived aboard the Endeavour in 1770 and named it Port Jackson. It was here that the first settlers set up camp in 1788 and the harbour has been an important part of city life ever since, used for transportation and recreation. Australian opal is not only the world’s most fascinating and colourful gemstone, it can also be a sound long-term investment.
Fire from the Outback CALLED ‘THE RAINBOW STONE’ by Australia’s Aboriginal people, opal is without doubt one of nature’s most remarkable gifts. It is now recognised as one of the five precious gemstones in the world, along with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, and is an excellent investment. While small amounts of opals may be found in other countries such as Ethiopia, Mexico and the USA, Australia produces more than 90 per cent of the world’s supply. The romance of the opal is in the gem’s incredible ability to expose an infinite number of colours, forever moving with the light. Mined in the outback

of Australia across three states, it is as much the call of the outback that lures the opal miner and keeps them going. Scorched landscapes and blazing red sunsets, the night stars from horizon to horizon, this is a hauntingly beautiful country that penetrates one’s soul. The elusive opal was formed millions of years ago when liquid silica filtered down into the faults and fissures of sedimentary rock. When the water content evaporated, tiny spheres of silica remained and over time were solidified. The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that
each gem has an individual character. In 1964 the CSIRO (Australia’s national research laboratories) unlocked the riddle of why opals have such colours. Opal is composed of minute particles of silica in closely packed spherical aggregates. It is the varying arrangement of these particles (and, of course, cavities) that causes the reflected light to be split into the full range of colours of the spectrum. There are three main production areas in Australia for mining opals. There’s the bright and beautiful Queensland boulder opal which is mined around the Quilpie area in Western Queensland.

Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is the home of the famous black opal which derives its name from the colour of the nobbies or pieces of rough opal in which the gems are usually found. The third area is Coober Pedy and Mintabie in South Australia. Coober Pedy is an Aboriginal name, meaning ‘white man in a hole’, which describes exactly what miners still do today—live underground to escape the fierce heat of summer. This is where the white or milk opals are mined. The value of an opal depends on the amount and brilliance of the colour, preferably being evenly distributed across the face of the polished gem. The greater the spectrum of colours from red to
violet, the better, with crimson, reds and orange being rarer than the greens and blues. Milkiness, cloudiness or greyness detracts from the value. Ideally, the greater the number of colours, the more prized the gem, and if these are arranged in a block pattern, more value is added. The extremes are pin-sized dots of colour (pinfire) to one large sheet of colour (broadflash) covering the whole stone. The elusive ‘harlequin’ is the ultimate in this form but is very rare. Shapes of the finished opal vary according to the characteristics of each stone. Boulder opal is usually cut in baroque or free form, whereas seam opal is at its best presented in cabochon (domed) form.
If you are buying an unset opal, it is important to consider the way it will eventually be worn. For example, some opals will offer a better play of colour when worn vertically, as in a brooch or pendant, whereas others are best flat, as in a ring setting. There is a great deal to consider when investing in your opal, but expert advice is available for your complete pleasure and pride in an ever-inspiring piece of jewellery. Above all, buy the opal colour that appeals to you. Enjoy your purchase, knowing it’s geologically millions of years old, but will give you pleasure every day of the year. Hyde Park Barracks is a significant convict site in Australia, and has had World Heritage list status since 2010. Watch as a massive 350 square metre cinema screen rises from the harbour against the extraordinary backdrop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Opera House and city skyline.
