Q: As a local, what is the best market to visit in Sydney and why?

A: When it comes to local markets, you canʼt beat Rozelle Markets. It's full of unique handmade arts and crafts, live performances, local artisanal providores and delectable delights. Q: What is your favourite quirky thing to do in the city?

A: Partake in “making” my own wine at the Urban Winery in Moore Park. In addition to enhancing your wine knowledge and of course tasting what you have learnt, Urban Winery Sydney o ers e periential activities like grape stomping, wine blending, wine pairing etc., so that even if you are not an avid connoisseur, you will still have a great time.

A: From the time I was little, I have always had a soft spot for noodles – apanese ramen speci cally. When in Sydney, do check out the little Menya Noodle Bar, nestled away just under the Darling Harbour footbridge. With their array of di erent soup bases, even the fussiest tastebuds will be accommodated.

Q: What is the one thing you HAVE to do in Sydney?

Q: Where is your preferred place for an after-dinner drink?

A: One of my favourite activities to do every chance I have is undertake the picturesque Spit to Manly Walk. tʼs around 10km one way so bring lots of uids with you. he walk is a combination of coastal, bushlands and suburban trail, ideal for active guests and those seeking to hunt down the perfect photo shot. Do try to start the walk early in the day when itʼs cooler. he track can also get busy later in the day so an early start beats the crowds.

A: Hands down, it has to be Maybe Sammy on Harrington Street. tʼs a chic new place conveniently located just behind the historical Rocks precinct in Sydneyʼs entral usiness District ( D). Maybe Sammy has an e tensive menu of local beers, amboyant cocktails and, of course, my favourite, single pot still whiskeys. t s the only place ʼve found thus far that stocks my favourite Irish whiskey, Red Breast.

Walking Wonders

SYDNEY IS A CITY of history, art and culture. It’s also very walkable, and many of its key attractions are free to see. Take this walking tour of Sydney to discover its beauty, stories and a few secret gems. Start the walk by catching a train or ferry to Milson’s Point, at the base of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Walk back over the bridge using the pedestrian walkway on the eastern side for some of the most breathtaking views of Sydney Harbour—without costing you a cent. At the other side of the bridge, continue walking up to the Sydney Observatory and Observatory Hill (maas.museum/sydney-observatory). The heritage-listed Observatory was built in 1858 and began as the centre of scientific research for the colony of New South Wales. From its prime location, perched at the highest point over Sydney Harbour, the Observatory played an important role in the history of timekeeping, meteorology and astronomy. Today the Observatory is a museum and

public observatory with an 1874 29cm lens telescope available for public viewing during ticketed tours. It is free however, to wander the grounds and take in the spectacular view from the top of Observatory Hill. Take a quick look at the three remaining walls of Fort Phillip that were built 1804, before strolling downhill to the historic Rocks district. The Rocks was the first European settlement in Australia. It was established by Captain Arthur Phillip of the First Fleet in 1788 as a penal colony. Take a stroll through the cobblestone laneways and discover some of the 100-plus heritage sites and buildings in the area, including Cadman’s Cottage, the oldest house, built in 1816, and the Dawes Point Battery, which is the oldest remaining European structure, built in 1791. A look inside The Rocks Discovery Museum (facebook.com/TheRocksDiscoveryMuseum),

housed in a restored 1850s sandstone warehouse, is free, and will give further insight into this fascinating part of Sydney. The Museum includes a unique collection of archaeological artefacts found in The Rocks and interactive exhibits that highlight the area’s history, including the story of the land’s traditional custodians, the Aboriginal tribes who lived in Sydney before colonisation. The Rocks is also a vibrant community of restaurants and boutiques, with markets and live entertainment. After taking in the history and incredible view, wander inside the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA , mca.com.au). The MCA is Australia’s leading contemporary art museum, housed inside a grand art deco building. It’s free to see most of the cutting-edge Australian and international art inside the museum, with over 4,000 works on display, including Aboriginal artists. Head to the rooftop café for spectacular views of the Sydney Opera House.

Next, amble through Circular Quay, watching the iconic Sydney ferries arriving. If you have time, take a ferry from here to waterfront spots including Taronga Zoo, Luna Park, Watson’s Bay and Manly. At the end of Circular Quay lies the grand Sydney Opera House (sydneyoperahouse.com), designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon. The performing arts venue was formally opened on 20 October 1973, and is now one of the most recognised buildings in the world. The Sydney Opera House is home to regular performances by the Australian Ballet, Opera Australia and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Book a ticketed event such as a show or a guided tour, or simply walk up the stairs and around the famous sails for an up close look. Afterwards take a look on the northern VIP steps of the Opera House for a wild long-nosed fur-seal nicknamed “Benny” who has been known to sunbathe here, then continue walking onwards to the Royal Botanic Garden (rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au).

The gallery also includes a selection of 19th- and 20th-century European art with paintings by masters such as Pablo Picasso, Paul Cézanne, John Constable and Vincent van Gogh on display. Walk up Art Gallery Road to your next stop, the heritage-listed Hyde Park. Australia’s oldest park is divided by Park Street, with the ANZAC Memorial building and visitor centre, and pool of reflection on the south side, and with the Archibald Fountain, themed gardens, monuments and water features on the north side. The ANZAC Memorial is a heritagelisted war monument and museum, the state’s principal memorial to all Australians who have served in the Defence Forces. It’s free to wander through the memorial and pay tribute to the service and sacrifice made by all servicemen, servicewomen and their families (anzacmemorial.nsw.gov.au). Nearby Saint Mary’s Cathedral (stmaryscathedral.org.au) is the spiritual home of Sydney’s Catholic community. Built in English Gothic revival-style from 1866 to 1928, the spires finally where completed in June 2000. The breathtaking underground crypt is a must-visit, with its striking architecture and ornate terrazzo floor, considered to be one of the finest mosaic floors in the world.

The heritage-listed Royal Botanic Garden is located in an unbeatable spot on Sydney’s harbourfront. Meander through the various gardens and check out the sculptures, eel pond and flowers, ending with a visit to The Calyx, where a free exhibition “Plants with Bite” is on display, telling the story of carnivorous plants. A must stop in the Garden is a visit to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, an exposed sandstone rock hand-carved into a bench by convicts in 1810 for Elizabeth Macquarie, the wife of Major-General Lachlan Macquarie, Governor of New South Wales. The Chair is one of the best vantage points for Sydney Harbour. Walk up from the Garden to the State Library of NSW (sl.nsw.gov.au), the oldest library in Australia. Established in 1826, it’s free to browse the various exhibitions, take a heritage tour or gallery tour and visit the richly embellished Shakespeare room. The nearby Art Gallery of NSW (artgallery.nsw.gov.au) features paintings, photographs, drawings and sculptures by local and international artists, including a dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander gallery. Browse art works by pioneering 19th and 20th Century Australian artists such as Arthur Boyd, William Dobell, Tom Roberts and Brett Whiteley.

SYDNEYSIDERS LOVE TO GO all out when it comes to the Autumn Racing Carnival (australianturfclub.com.au). One of the year’s biggest events celebrates the best horses while giving the city an excuse to dress up and let their hair down. This year’s carnival, which starts on 16 March and ends on 20 April, features 45 group races, with over $33 million in prize money up for grabs. Over six weeks the program promises a series of exciting, glamorous events for horse racing aficionados, fashion lovers, and those who just love a fun day out. Throughout March, most of the racing carnival events take place at Rosehill Gardens, located in Sydney’s west. Getting to Rosehill Gardens Is easy. Catch the train from Town Hall, Wynyard, Circular Quay or Central stations to Parramatta or Strathfield stations, or the F3 Parramatta River ferry service from Circular Quay to Parramatta Wharf. You can combine regular public transport services with free Rosehill Gardens shuttle bus services from Parramatta wharf, Parramatta station and Strathfield station. You can also call an Uber or 13Cabs (13 22 27). Harbour Town pe ta ar fireworks an internationa y renowned ya t ra e and a wor d a o s opera o se SYDNEY’S ICONIC HARBOUR HAS pretty much seen it all since then Lieutenant James Cook arrived aboard the Endeavour in 1770 and named it Port Jackson. It was here that the first settlers set up camp in 1788 and the harbour has been an important part of city life ever since, used for transportation and recreation. Little wonder it is widely regarded as the greatest leisure harbour in the world. On any given day, the harbour is alive with boats of all shapes and sizes, be it passenger ferries, state-of-the-art yachts or kayakers. This is particularly true during the traditional Boxing Day launch of the Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race, when hundreds of craft follow the racers out of the harbour. And on New Year’s Eve, there’s no better spot to be than on a boat beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge as the breathtaking fireworks display takes place in the skies above. While the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House are its two most famous landmarks, the harbour has plenty more sights up its sleeve. Circular Quay, Luna Park and

Australian opal is not only the world’s most fascinating and colourful gemstone, it can also be a sound long-term investment.

Fire from the Outback CALLED ‘THE RAINBOW STONE’ by Australia’s Aboriginal people, opal is without doubt one of nature’s most remarkable gifts. It is now recognised as one of the five precious gemstones in the world, along with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, and is an excellent investment. While small amounts of opals may be found in other countries such as Ethiopia, Mexico and the USA, Australia produces more than 90 per cent of the world’s supply. The romance of the opal is in the gem’s incredible ability to expose an infinite number of colours, forever moving with the light. Mined in the outback of Australia across three states, it is as much the call of the outback that lures the opal miner

and keeps them going. Scorched landscapes and blazing red sunsets, the night stars from horizon to horizon, this is a hauntingly beautiful country that penetrates one’s soul. The elusive opal was formed millions of years ago when liquid silica filtered down into the faults and fissures of sedimentary rock. When the water content evaporated, tiny spheres of silica remained and over time were solidified. The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character. In 1964 the CSIRO (Australia’s national research laboratories) unlocked the riddle of why opals have such colours. Opal is composed of minute particles of silica in closely packed

spherical aggregates. It is the varying arrangement of these particles (and, of course, cavities) that causes the reflected light to be split into the full range of colours of the spectrum. There are three main production areas in Australia for mining opals. There’s the bright and beautiful Queensland boulder opal which is mined around the Quilpie area in Western Queensland. Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is the home of the famous black opal which derives its name from the colour of the nobbies or pieces of rough opal in which the gems are usually found. The third area is Coober Pedy and Mintabie in South Australia. Coober Pedy is an Aboriginal name, meaning ‘white man in a hole’, which describes

The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character. exactly what miners still do today— live underground to escape the fierce heat of summer. This is where the white or milk opals are mined. The value of an opal depends on the amount and brilliance of the colour, preferably being evenly distributed across the face of the polished gem. The greater the spectrum of colours from red to violet, the better, with crimson, reds and orange being rarer than the greens and blues. Milkiness, cloudiness or greyness detracts from the value. Ideally, the greater the number of colours, the more prized the gem,

and if these are arranged in a block pattern, more value is added. The extremes are pin-sized dots of colour (pinfire) to one large sheet of colour (broadflash) covering the whole stone. The elusive ‘harlequin’ is the ultimate in this form but is very rare. Shapes of the finished opal vary according to the characteristics of each stone. Boulder opal is usually cut in baroque or free form, whereas seam opal is at its best presented in cabochon (domed) form. If you are buying an unset opal, it is important to consider the way it will eventually be worn. For example, some opals will offer a better play of

colour when worn vertically, as in a brooch or pendant, whereas others are best flat, as in a ring setting. There is a great deal to consider when investing in your opal, but expert advice is available for your complete pleasure and pride in an ever-inspiring piece of jewellery. Above all, buy the opal colour that appeals to you. Enjoy your purchase, knowing it’s geologically millions of years old, but will give you pleasure every day of the year. Opals—truly nature’s own fireworks!
