SYDNEY
Welcome to our brand spanking new edition of Where Sydney. We have changed our format, and now come in a convenient portable size, so you can take Where with you as you travel around town—and we hope you do! This fabulous new format means we can continue to bring you all the best things to see, do and eat in Sydney. The city shines this month for the annual Vivid Sydney festival. It’s the tenth year of this amazing event which lights precincts in a dazzling rainbow of colours. Take the Vivid Light Walk for a spectacular tour of the main harbourside locations. It is a very popular event, so if you go on the weekend, beware of crowds. My tip is go mid-week, or late at night, and be sure to catch public transport.

WHE RE I M AY 2018
Q: What are your top three must-do places for the first-time visitor to Sydney?
A: It’s great to see Sydney from different perspectives—from above, by helicopter flight or journeying to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge with BridgeClimb; from the water either by ferry or cruising around the harbour; or from within the city itself by taking a stroll through neighbourhoods such as The Rocks or Surry Hills. Q: What’s an undiscovered gem that a seasoned visitor to Sydney might enjoy?
A: The rejuvenation of the old brewery site in Chippendale is one of my favourite areas of Sydney. With boutique galleries, fantastic formal dining and the unique Spice Alley, there are choices for all tastes. The area is also an architectural marvel featuring great contemporary design including Central Park and the Frank Gehry designed Dr Chau Chak Wing School of Business at UTS. Q: What do you consider the city’s best photo op?
A: For the best postcard views of Sydney it’s hard to beat Mrs Macquarie’s Chair—a great place for a photo (or a selfie!) with the city skyline framing both the Sydney
Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. Q: What are your tips for visitors heading to Vivid Sydney?
A: Vivid is such a wonderful time in Sydney, and every year it seems to be growing both in size and in popularity. Make sure that you make a plan of what to see before heading out as it’s easy to get caught up in the crowds. If you have time, allow for more than one evening so that you can experience all the precincts. Q: What’s your favourite part about Vivid?
A: The city absolutely comes to life during Vivid—restaurants are always popular and have their own interpretation of the event. But personally, I love seeing our city from on the harbour and being up close to the Sydney Opera House during the festival. Entering Circular Quay by ferry is a spectacle in itself.

A free program of art on show across town.
Pushing boundaries and ideas is what the 21st Biennale of Sydney is all about. This free biannual arts festival takes places at venues all over the city including the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Cockatoo Island and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Artistic Director Mami Kataoka has curated a diverse range of art around the theme of “SUPERPOSITION: Equilibrium and Engagement”. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cockatoo Island is home to works by 20 artists. One of the most arresting and awe-inspiring pieces on the island is Chinese artist Ai Weiwei’s “Law of the Journey”, a 60-metre giant inflatable boat with more than 300 oversized figures. The artwork is made from the same rubber that is used to manufacture the vessels that carry refugees across the Aegean Sea. It is a timely, moving piece bringing attention to the plight of refugees across the world. biennaleofsydney.art 14

THE MUCH-LOVED VIVID SYDNEY festival turns 10 this month. Over the past decade it has grown to be the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas. From 25 May to 16 June, Vivid Sydney will take over the city, spreading colour, light and joy. With new Vivid Light precincts, extraordinary superstars performing for Vivid Music and some of the world’s foremost creatives on stage for Vivid Ideas, this year’s program is truly out of this world.

VIVID LIGHT The hallmark of Vivid Light each year is the Lighting of the Sails at the Sydney Opera House. This year Australian artist Jonathan Zawada has designed a spectacle called “Metamathemagical”. The artist has created various scenes that evolve and dissolve as objects are introduced, removed or undergo metamorphosis. Zawada says, “I really wanted to take a big picture view of both what Vivid is about, but more importantly, how I feel about Australia as this kind of elemental, timeless place that is also completely new and full of energy”. The beautiful Royal Botanic Garden Sydney comes alive with light works inspired by nature. “Aqueous” by Jen Lewin is an interactive landscape of meandering pathways of light. Reflection and shifting colour and light react to audience participants as they run and walk along the pathway. “Parrot Party” by Zara Pasfield features a cheerful flock of brightly coloured birds perch on the staggered tiers of an open pavilion. They chatter, they tweet, chirp and sing, sending out a warm and inviting welcome. This year Customs House will be lit up in celebration of two Australian icons who turn 100 this year, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. These two characters are the creation of Australian author May Gibbs, and are part of many Australian childhoods. Gibbs is one of Australia’s best loved classic childrens’ book illustrators and authors. Her love of the Australian bush was portrayed in her work, and “The Gumnut Babies”,
May’s classic book about Australian bush fairies, was first published in 1916, followed by her most famous creations of all, “Snugglepot and Cuddlepie” in 1918. “Virtual Vibration” at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) is a highly collaborative work produced by the Spinifex Group in conjunction with Australian artist Jonny Niesche and composer Mark Pritchard. The shifting sensory experience is accompanied by a beautiful soundscape. “BALLpit” at The Rocks transforms historic Cadmans Cottage into a virtual space where visitors swim, jump, push and dance through rooms filled with tens of thousands of virtual, responsive toy balls. Movements and interactions by visitors constantly change the performance of the balls—children will love this one! Darling Harbour will be showered in light again with “Fantastic Oceans”. Created by Oracle Liquid, this art-meets-technology water fountain, light and laser experience celebrates an environment where bioluminescent creatures live deep beneath the ocean. Luna Park is a Vivid Light precinct for the first time with large-scale projections on the façade of Coney Island, while the iconic Ferris Wheel will be all lit up.

Harbour Town Humpback whales, spectacular fireworks, an internationally renowned yacht race and a world famous opera house. SYDNEY’S ICONIC HARBOUR HAS pretty much seen it all since then Lieutenant James Cook arrived aboard the Endeavour in 1770 and named it Port Jackson. It was here that the first settlers set up camp in 1788 and the harbour has been an important part of city life ever since, used for transportation and recreation. Little wonder it is widely regarded as the greatest leisure harbour in the world. On any given day, the harbour is alive with boats of all shapes and sizes, be it passenger ferries, state-of-the-art yachts or kayakers. This is particularly true during the traditional Boxing Day launch of the Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race, when hundreds of craft follow the racers out of the harbour. And on New Year’s Eve, there’s no better spot to be than on a boat beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge as the breathtaking fireworks display takes place in the skies above. While the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House are its two most famous landmarks, the harbour has plenty more sights up its sleeve. Circular Quay, Luna Park and Anzac Bridge are all accessible and visible from the water along with hundreds of bays, coves, beaches and waterways. Several islands can also be found in the harbour, the most notable being Fort Denison, Shark Island and Cockatoo Island. With so much to see and do, it pays to plan ahead and the good news is that there are plenty of ways to get out on the water, designed to suit all budgets, time frames and interests.

Nature’s Own Fireworks Australian opal is not only the world’s most fascinating and colourful gemstone, it can also be a sound longterm investment.
32
WHE RE I M AY 2018
CALLED ‘THE RAINBOW STONE’ by Australia’s Aboriginal people, opal is without doubt one of nature’s most remarkable gifts. It is now recognised as one of the five precious gemstones in the world, along with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, and is an excellent investment. While small amounts of opals may be found in other countries such as Ethiopia, Mexico and the USA, Australia produces more than 90 per cent of the world’s supply. The romance of the opal is in the gem’s incredible ability to expose an infinite number of colours, forever moving with the light. Mined in the outback of
Australia across three states, it is as much the call of the outback that lures the opal miner and keeps them going. Scorched landscapes and blazing red sunsets, the night stars from horizon to horizon, this is a hauntingly beautiful country that penetrates one’s soul. The elusive opal was formed millions of years ago when liquid silica filtered down into the faults and fissures of sedimentary rock. When the water content evaporated, tiny spheres of silica remained and over time were solidified. The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character. In 1964
The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character.
the CSIRO (Australia’s national research laboratories) unlocked the riddle of why opals have such colours. Opal is composed of minute particles of silica in closely packed spherical aggregates. It is the varying arrangement of these particles (and, of course, cavities) that causes the reflected light to be split into the full range of colours of the spectrum. There are three main production areas in Australia for mining opals. There’s the bright and beautiful Queensland boulder opal which is mined around the Quilpie area in Western Queensland. Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is the home of the famous black opal which derives its name from the colour of the nobbies or pieces of rough opal in which the gems are usually found. The third area is Coober Pedy and Mintabie in South Australia. Coober Pedy is an Aboriginal name, meaning ‘white man in a hole’, which describes exactly what miners still do today— live underground to escape the fierce heat of summer. This is where the white or milk opals are mined.
The value of an opal depends on the amount and brilliance of the colour, preferably being evenly distributed across the face of the polished gem. The greater the spectrum of colours from red to violet, the better, with crimson, reds and orange being rarer than the greens and blues. Milkiness, cloudiness or greyness detracts from the value. Ideally, the greater the number of colours, the more prized the gem, and if these are arranged in a block pattern, more value is added. The extremes are pin-sized dots of colour (pinfire) to one large sheet of colour (broadflash) covering the whole stone. The elusive ‘harlequin’ is the ultimate in this form but is very rare. Shapes of the finished opal vary according to the characteristics of each stone. Boulder opal is usually cut in baroque or free form, whereas seam opal is at its best presented in cabochon (domed) form. If you are buying an unset opal, it is important to consider the way it will eventually be worn. For example, some opals will offer a better play of colour when worn vertically, as in a brooch or pendant, whereas others are best flat, as in a ring setting. There is a great deal to consider when investing in your opal, but expert advice is available for your complete pleasure and pride in an ever-inspiring piece of jewellery. Above all, buy the opal colour that appeals to you. Enjoy your purchase, knowing it’s geologically millions of years old, but will give you pleasure every day of the year. Opals—truly nature’s own fireworks!

The approximately 3-kilometre coastal walk between famous Bondi Beach and equally beautiful Bronte Beach is often at the top of every tourist’s to-do list, and it’s easy to see why, with picture perfect views all the way. The Bay Run This walking path in Sydney’s inner-west is very popular with joggers, cyclists, social walkers and families. Spanning approximately 7 kilometres it loops around Haberfield, Leichhardt Park, over
Iron Cove Bridge and around Henley Marine Drive to Rodd Point. You’ll get bay views all the way, and it’s a super pleasant way to start your day. Manly to Spit Locals love the wondrous Manly to Spit walk. The 10-kilometre trail is no easy feat, and will take 3-4 hours, but you can just do a smaller section if you choose. Stunning beaches and bays line the walk, and you might even be lucky enough to spot a whale or two during migration season (May–November).

We love getting out in the fresh air and basking in the autumn sun with one of the city’s many coastal walks. Whether by the beach or by the bay, Sydney has plenty of options for some fun in the sun.

Part museum, part showroom, the National Opal Collection is one of Australia’s most fascinating tourist attractions. Not only does it have a huge array of opals and jewellery for sale, but it also shows how opals came to be formed over millions of years and how they are mined today.
