Q: Describe your perfect Sydney day.

A: A perfect day in Sydney for me is based around my favourite passions—great food, craft beers and sports! I like to head over and have breakfast at Bills in Surry Hills, then I’d take a walk through the city and gardens, stopping for lunch at the Botanic Gardens Restaurant. I’d then slowly make my way back through some of Sydney’s best craft beer bars. I then li e to nish o y day by watching Sydney FC (hopefully with a win!).

A: The walk around Watsons Bay and the outh ead rail o ers spectacular views of Sydney. However my favourite walk would have to be the Jibbon Head Circuit down around Bundeena with highlights of Wedding Cake Rock and the Figure 8 pools.

A: For me the most beautiful building in the city is where I get to spend most of my day! The Westin Sydney is housed in the historic General ost ce uildin and the juxtaposition of the modern architecture with the remarkable sandstone structure and wooden hallways provides a fascinating glimpse into Sydney’s history.

Q: Sydney is known for its great coffee; do you have a favourite cafe?

Q: What is your favourite thing to do at night in Sydney?

A: The trouble is just narrowing it down to one great café! The Grounds of the City is an amazing s ot for a cu of co ee and a catch up in the city, they o er an un eata le selection with a great atmosphere. Although my favourite quick take away option would have to be

SHOP UP A STORM With an abundance of office towers in the area, there’s now also some great shopping options, and they are not all just for office workers. David Jones has a Barangaroo branch which is compact, but full of all the essential goods including beauty, fashion and accessories. Peter’s of Kensington has an outlet here, offering a wide range of homewares, appliances, and gifts.

Head to Barangaroo Reserve for a slice of greenery and parkland peace, but beware the construction zone that is now well underway on the city’s new hotel and gaming complex, Crown Sydney, as well as the construction of the new Sydney Metro line, so you’ll have to follow the signs from Barangaroo South around the construction site to get to Barangaroo Reserve. Explore the reserve and watch the water splash against the sandstone blocks at Nawi Cove. Follow Wulugul Walk around the water’s edge or head up the stairs (or via the lift) to the Stargazer Lawn. See the Anzac Bridge to one side, and the magnificent Sydney Harbour Bridge to the other. The Reserve itself is fully accessible, so check their website for more information and helpful hints on getting here. Various cultural events, festivals and markets take place at Barangaroo Reserve and in the vast Cutaway open-air hall throughout the year. GETTING HERE It’s so easy to get to Barangaroo. From Darling Harbour, walk around Cockle Bay past the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, along King Street Wharf, and you’ll shortly arrive at Barangaroo South. From The Rocks, you can enter Barangaroo Reserve through Munn Street Reserve or via Towns Place. If travelling by train, get off at Wynyard Station and take the new Wynyard Walk tunnel to Barangaroo. There is also a newly opened ferry wharf located at Barangaroo, right outside the dining strip, which makes getting home after a meal even easier with ferries to Milson’s Point and Circular Quay.

Flowers are at the forefront of Canberra’s famous spring festival. By Olivia Storrie FLORIADE IS AUSTRALIA’S largest flower festival and the perfect excuse to grab some snacks and take a road trip to the country’s capital. Just over three hours’ drive from central Sydney, Canberra is home to this epic month-long celebration of spring that not only features flowers but comedy, food, art and music. Running from 15 September to 14 October, the festival is a feast for the senses with every colour bloom imaginable. Commonwealth Park, on the banks of Lake Burley Griffin, in Canberra will host the one million plus bulbs that have been planted in preparation for the festival. This year, the entire festival will bop to the beat of retro pop culture. The who’s who of the 20th century will be represented from Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson to the elusive Where’s Wally. There are plenty of flowerbeds to explore that adhere to the pop culture theme and even more fantastic photo opportunities. One flowerbed will reflect the bright primary colours of Australian artist Ken Done’s creations alongside a Rubik’s cube inspired bed. Entry to Floriade is free which leaves you with plenty of change to spend on groovy local arts and crafts. The markets at Floriade are particularly noteworthy with lovely local art, handmade goodies and lifestyle products available for purchase. With Jazz in the Park every Sunday of the festival, there are plenty of free activities to enjoy. Visitors will have the opportunity to get their hands dirty with a number of inspired workshops held in The Greenhouse. There will be terrarium building workshops alongside kokedama, a Japanese craft that involves binding plants together to create mossy orbs. The much-loved brand Lush will be running a workshop too with lucky attendees able to create their own bath bombs.

There are plenty of opportunities to learn something new with a spate of horticultural themed talks to attend. Angie Thomas will let you know the best ways to not kill your house plants whilst Alexx Stuart, author of “Low Tox Life”, will enlighten her audience with simple solutions to replacing household chemicals and beauty products. Stick around because Nightfest takes over between 26–30 September. Visitors will be able to revel in the crisp spring air all night long with illuminated flowerbeds, light installations and an abundance of local food and drink stalls. The entire four-hectare display takes on an even more ethereal tone at night with flower beds lit up in all directions. A carefully curated program of nightly entertainment is available during Nightfest. Wednesday will see visitors enjoying the open-air cinema accompanied by the smell of sweet tulips and freshly popped popcorn. This year, “Ghostbusters” and “Back to the Future” are set to screen. Thursday and Friday are reserved for music with artists like Jeff Duff and Kate Miller-Heidke making an appearance. Saturday night will see Cell Block 69 take revellers back in time with a huge retro party. A MA15+ comedy fest, on 30 September, features the likes of comedians Arj Barker and Akmal Saleh for a Sunday evening full of belly laughs. Floriade’s floral feast might be the drawcard, but Canberra is home to some of the country’s best food and wine so it’s definitely worth the drive. Fire from the Outback Australian opal is not only the world’s most fascinating and colourful gemstone, it can also be a sound long-term investment.

CALLED ‘THE RAINBOW STONE’ by Australia’s Aboriginal people, opal is without doubt one of nature’s most remarkable gifts. It is now recognised as one of the five precious gemstones in the world, along with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, and is an excellent investment. While small amounts of opals may be found in other countries such as Ethiopia, Mexico and the USA, Australia produces more than 90 per cent of the world’s supply. The romance of the opal is in the gem’s incredible ability to expose an infinite number of colours, forever moving with the light. Mined in the outback of Australia across three states, it is as much the call of the outback that lures the opal miner and keeps them going. Scorched landscapes and blazing red sunsets, the night stars from horizon to horizon, this is a hauntingly beautiful country that penetrates one’s soul. The elusive opal was formed millions of years ago when liquid silica filtered down into the faults and fissures of

sedimentary rock. When the water content evaporated, tiny spheres of silica remained and over time were solidified. The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character. In 1964 the CSIRO (Australia’s national research laboratories) unlocked the riddle of why opals have such colours.

The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character. Opal is composed of minute particles of silica in closely packed spherical aggregates. It is the varying arrangement of these particles (and, of course, cavities) that causes the reflected light to be split into the full range of colours of the spectrum. There are three main production areas in Australia for mining opals. There’s the bright and beautiful Queensland boulder opal which is mined around the Quilpie area in Western Queensland. Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is the home of the famous black opal which derives its name from the colour of the nobbies or pieces of rough opal in which the gems are usually found. The third area is Coober Pedy and Mintabie in South Australia. Coober Pedy is an Aboriginal name, meaning ‘white man in a hole’, which describes exactly what miners still do today—live underground to escape the fierce heat of summer. This is where the white or milk opals are mined. The value of an opal depends on the amount and brilliance of the colour, preferably being evenly distributed across the face of the polished gem.

The greater the spectrum of colours from red to violet, the better, with crimson, reds and orange being rarer than the greens and blues. Milkiness, cloudiness or greyness detracts from the value. Ideally, the greater the number of colours, the more prized the gem, and if these are arranged in a block pattern, more value is added. The extremes are pin-sized dots of colour (pinfire) to one large sheet of colour (broadflash) covering the whole stone. The elusive ‘harlequin’ is the ultimate in this form but is very rare. Shapes of the finished opal vary according to the characteristics of each stone. Boulder opal is usually cut in baroque or free form, whereas seam opal is at its best presented in cabochon (domed) form. If you are buying an unset opal, it is important to consider the way it will eventually be worn. For example, some opals will offer a better play of colour when worn vertically, as in a brooch or pendant, whereas others are best flat, as in a ring setting. There is a great deal to consider when investing in your opal, but expert advice is available for your complete pleasure and pride in an ever-inspiring piece of jewellery. Above all, buy the opal colour that appeals to you. Enjoy your purchase, knowing it’s geologically millions of years old, but will give you pleasure every day of the year.
