By Design Been in downtown Tampa lately and got 90 minutes to spare before heading back? Take a stroll through the Waterfront Arts District for a look at the architecture that has shaped the look of the city through the decades. 90 MINUTES IN:

Waterfront Arts District to get to know a travel destination is through its rich collection of architectural buildings. In Tampa, buildings range from the Moorish minarets of the Henry B. Plant Museum to the Mediterranean style of the 1926 Tampa Theater, and the modernist jewel box that houses the Tampa Museum of Art. No matter when you visit the District has something to enjoy—hotels, shops, cultural attractions and more, are all planned as part of a bold, new Water Street redevelopment.

St. Petersburg’s Edge District is about to get a whole lot smokier with the opening of Dr. BBQ this fall. The brainchild of celebrity pitmaster Ray “Dr. BBQ” Lampe, the restaurant will feature new American barbecue with trendy flavor twists. Hipsters would call it artisanal. Lampe’s barbecue expertise is legendary. From his start as a barbecue hobbyist to his meteoric rise as a prolific cookbook author and TV food show host and judge, Dr. BBQ was inducted into the BBQ Hall of Fame in 2014. Tampa Bay Your Way UNIQUE TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS, FIT TO MATCH YOUR PERSONAL STYLE. FIND THE CITY CURATED FOR YOU AT WHERETRAVELER.COM/TAMPA.

Couples

FirstTimer

Try a romantic dinner at (1) Bern’s Steak House to impress your sweetie not only on Valentine’s Day but for any special occasion throughout the year. When romance is in the air, head to (2) Honeymoon Island State Park, an undeveloped stretch of beach and one of Florida’s most visited parks, to see why it was named after honeymooners who visited in the 1940s and ‘50s. Known for its famed sunsets, in Tampa Bay you’ll want to spend the day outdoors, whether picnicking, fishing or strolling the pier at (3) Weaver Park on the Pinellas Trail in Dunedin.

Have kids in town? Don’t worry St. Petersburg has got you covered with plenty of family-friendly attractions. Start at the (1) Great Explorations Children’s Museum for more than a dozen hands-on exhibits tailor made for children ages 10 and under. Head to (2) Bits ‘N Pieces Puppet Theatre for a vintage-inspired performance featuring marionettes, rod puppets and glove puppets bring classic children’s tales to life. Take a trek through the wild at (3) Sunken Gardens. The 100-year-old garden in St. Petersburg is home to some of the oldest tropical plants in the region.

From Tarpon Springs to St. Pete, craft beer is everywhere on (1) The St. Pete/Clearwater Craft Beer Trail (a.k.a. Gulp Trail). Sip your way through fresh artisanal beers you won’t find anywhere else. With more than 100 golf courses, it’s no wonder Tampa Bay is considered the destination for year-round golf. Whether you play at (2) East Bay Golf Club or any other course, tee time awaits. Starting in November until April, (3) Tampa Electric’s Manatee Viewing Center opens to visitors for a glimpse of these docile creatures and other marine life in the waters.
