MFA at Museum of Fine Arts
Canyon Cafe at the James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art
The spirit of the American West is alive and well at the James Museum; filled with Western and wildlife art, it’s a nod to St. Pete couple Tom and Mary James’ western travels. The museum’s aptly named Canyon Cafe is a haven for Southwestern cuisine. The museum’s arroyo-style design made it natural to bring in drinks such as sasparilla and birch beer, said Roger Perry, co-founder of the Datz Restaurant Group. Other musts for the menu, according to Perry, include the Hatch chile cheeseburger and the chicken tortilla soup. 1501 Central Ave., St. Pete. 727.256.9800
Sono Cafe, Tampa Museum of Art Find dishes inspired by museum exhibits at this cafe that overlooks the banks of the Hillsborough River. Handcrafted lunches are available daily, brunch is a must on the weekend, and visitors would be remiss if they passed by without stopping for a coffee or gelato. The artistic space brings in local chefs for guest appearances and participates in Fourth Friday festivities. Inside the Cornelia Corbett Center at 120 W. Gasparilla Plaza. 813.421.8367

The culinary gem at the MFA is showcased exactly as it should be: inside the museum’s glass conservatory with unforgettable views of St. Pete’s waterfront. This American bistro is revered as one of the city’s best weekend brunch options; brunch highlights include vanilla and cinnamon-dipped French toast, caprese and lump crab cake benedicts, basil pesto chicken salad wraps and blackened Mahi BLTs. Located at the base of the Helical Staircase, Gala is both a tribute to Dali’s wife and the Spanish tradition of painting food. Its cuisine vibrantly springs to life in the hands of chef Chuck Bandel, who studied in one of the most celebrated restaurants close to Dali’s home on the Mediterranean. Sample as much of the menu as you can—tapas includes Spanish omelets, olives, cheese and carpaccio. F-W, 10 am-5 pm; Th till 7:30 pm. 1 Dali Blvd., St. Pete. 727.623.4705

[WHERE INSIDE]
Tampa Bay Your Way UNIQUE TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS, FIT TO MATCH YOUR PERSONAL STYLE.
Beachgoers
History Buffs
LGBTQ Friendly
Tampa Bay beaches have been lauded on national best-of lists for decades. (1) Clearwater Beach is almost always in or near the top spot; it’s covered in sugary white sand, and sunsets at Pier 60 make evenings magical. (2) Honeymoon Island State Park is also an idyllic spot—it sits on a natural barrier island and boasts four miles of sandy beaches, nature trails and abundant wildlife. (3) Treasure Island’s Sunset Beach lies at the southern tip of Treasure Island. It’s dotted with tiki huts and beach bars and has fully adopted the Bohemian lifestyle.
A National Historic Site that pays homage to the African American experience in Plant City, the (1) Bing Rooming House Museum was once a hotel for people of color during segregation. (2) Fort De Soto Park, also on the National Historic Register, was once home to the Tocobaga Indians and served as a military outpost during the Spanish-American War and a bombing range in World War II. In downtown Tampa, visitors can board a warship that saw action in WWII, Korea and Vietnam by stepping foot on the (3) American Victory Mariners Museum.
The Tampa area is one of Florida’s most LGBTQ-friendly destinations. St. Pete’s colorful (1) Grand Central District is full of businesses that celebrate all peoples; on Oct. 11, it’s home to Come OUT St. Pete (comeoutstpete.org). An institution for LGBTQ diners, (2) Hamburger Mary’s is so much more than a restaurant—it’s a cultural experience with drag queens, karaoke, “HamBingo” and overall fabulousness. When you want to relax with your sweetheart, (3) St. Pete Beach welcomes all lifestyles. The come-as-you are attitude makes you feel at ease.
