the first studio glass furnace was introduced in 1962 by Harvey Littleton, who, a year later, started the first glass graduate program at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. “Lightning” by Jonathan Borofsky
ICONIC TAMPA
Like Lightning in a Bottle—Only Better Tampa Bay takes great pride in its sports teams, as it does its public art. So you’ll have no question as to where you are when you’re greeted at Amalie Arena—home to the Lightning, Tampa’s pro hockey team—by Jonathan Borofsky’s aptly named “Lighting,” a 70-foot tall yellow beacon that symbolizes lightning bolts coming to life. Constructed in 1997, the sculpure consists of three angled bolts and is an integral part of the Tampa skyline. Viewers are meant to interact with the work, so walk through the center (or skirt its perimeter) to get in and out of the arena—if you dare! MOSI Tampa’s Museum of Science and Industry is full of technological wonders, but we’re engrossed by two of its signature sculptures. The “Recyclosaurus” is a mammoth T. rex (25 feet high and 40 feet long) made of recycled steel, orange plastic construction mesh and other materials.
Not as large but just as cool is the eight-foot-tall, balloonish “Molecular Dog,” based on a fructose molecule. 4801 Fowler Ave., Tampa, 813.987.6000, www.mosi.org UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN FLORIDA The University of Southern Florida’s Tampa campus is full of inspiring pieces; among the works there is a bronze bust of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the futuristic “Maze 2000,” “Neuron Forest,” made from perforated aluminum, and “Unspecific Gravity,” with fiber optics and water. Gone Gasparilla It’ll be a pirate’s life for you and thousands of your closest friends as Gasparilla takes over Tampa January through March. Read on to discover the events you dare not miss—if you don’t want to walk the plank. The four-mile long Parade of Pirates is one of Gasparilla’ s many pirate-themed events.
GASPARILLA CHILDREN’S PARADE JAN 19. This alcohol-free event welcomes Gasparilla back to Tampa Bay. The parade begins at Bay to Bay Street and ends at Watrous/Orleans. There’s also a preschooler’s stroll route and a shuttle that runs continously from 10 am-8 pm ($10).

Arrgh Matey For anyone longing for a real-life Pirates of the Caribbean-style adventure with swashbuckling scallywags and cannon booms, the Gasparilla Festival offers a slice of jolly pirate history. It’s a nod to 18th-century rogue pirate José Gaspar, who plundered the Gulf waters off Florida’s West Coast. Pirate legend permeates Tampa Bay thanks to the scoundrel Gaspar, who escaped on a vessel dubbed the Floridablanca after being accused of stealing Spain’s Royal Crown Jewels. Fact or embellishment? You decide.
SEMINOLE HARD ROCK GASPARILLA INVASION & PARADE JAN 26. Presented by the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, shouts from the legendary pirate José Gaspar and his band of marauders echoe across the bay in this re-enactmented pirate invasion. Once the mayor surrenders the key to the city, the Krewe launches a victory celebration, the Parade of Pirates, down Caption text Bayshore Boulevard.
KREWE OF THE KNIGHTS OF SANT‘ YAGO ILLUMI NATED KNIGHT PARADE FEB. 9. The largest event of its kind in the Southeast, this illuminated parade follows Tampa’s annual Gasparilla celebration. The Krewe of the Knights of Sant’ Yago has hosted it every year since 1974. GASPARILLA OUTWARD BOUND VOYAGE MARCH 2. And just as quickly as it has begun, Gasparilla’s pirates prepare to once again take to the sea, bringing Tampa’s Gasparilla events to an end for 2019. But for those still looking to steep themselves in lore, a visit to the José Gaspar statue (at Homes of Regency Cove) may be in order. [WHERE INSIDE]
Tampa Bay Your Way UNIQUE TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS, FIT TO MATCH YOUR PERSONAL STYLE.
Botanical Gardens
Performing Arts
Sports Bars
Tampa Bay’s botanical gardens provide city-dwellers the chance to escape the daily grind and unwind. (1) Florida Botanical Gardens sweeps across 100-plus acres— home to a Butterfly Garden, Native Plants Garden and a Vinery Display, among others. St. Petersburg’s oldest living museum, (2) Sunken Gardens, is a 100-year-old wonderland, where visitors can wander past waterfalls, exotic plants, flowers and flamingos. (3) USF Botanical Gardens plays host to plant festivals, classes and events, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
There’s no shortage of entertainment around here, and the (1) Straz Center, the largest performing arts center in the Southeast, should be the first stop on your list—showing Broadway performances, comedy, opera, theater, dance and more. (2) Ruth Eckerd Hall, a 73,000 squarefoot facility, features a variety of shows, as well as on-site dining. With a mission to “enrich the life of the Tampa Bay area,” (3) The Florida Orchestra encourages locals and tourists alike to attend one of nearly 100 concerts it performs in the tricity area annually.
Kick back, crack open a cold one and cheer on your team at a topnotch Tampa Bay sports bar. (1) The Brown Boxer Pub & Grille has four locations, each with “enough TVs to open a Best Buy” and a selection of draft beer. Branding itself as a premier Tampa destination, (2) Ferg’s Live is the place to go for American fare, live music, and, of course, to witness your team win. Decked out with professional pool tables, dart boards and over 70 TVs (3) Peabody’s is the perfect place to chow down on a basket of wings and play a game while you watch the game.
