Supernormal Canteen Returns Superstar chef Andrew McConnell is bringing back his former test kitchen Supernormal Canteen. The hugely successful sister restaurant Supernormal is still going strong in Flinders Lane, and the new Supernormal Canteen in St Kilda will be livelier and louder with freeflowing Asahi and a smoking Yakitori grill. The menu will feature steamed pork buns, chicken skin chicharrones, Chongqing popcorn and dumplings, accompanied by cocktail jugs, wine, Japanese beers and soft drinks. McConnell says, “We want Supernormal Canteen to be a fun, approachable local, bursting with people.” Opening mid-July. 2/157 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda.
JAPANESE ART
The Works of Hokusai at NGV Katsushika Hokusai is regarded as one of the most influential and creative minds in the history of Japanese art. His unique social observations, innovative approach to design and mastery of the brush, made him the most famous and popular artist of Edo period Japan as well as an internationally recognised artist. In 1909 the National Gallery of Victoria purchased five works from Hokusai’s iconic “Thirty-six views of Mt Fuji” series including his most celebrated image “The great wave”, two works from his “Tour of famous waterfalls” series and four other major works. A selection of these works will be exhibited as focus points beside corresponding works from the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum, giving visitors the opportunity to view different impressions of the same image side-by-side and allowing the NGV’s Hokusai prints to be put in a scholarly context for the first time. PHO-GRONI FUN Angie Hart.
Negroni with a Twist at Uncle St Kilda hotspot Uncle has recently opened a second venue at the top-end of Collins Street in the city. This 100-seat restaurant has a tropical ambiance and rooftop vibe, open windows and leafy views overlook the picturesque Collins Street urban bustle below. It is the ideal spot for a fill of pho and banh for a midday feed, after-work drinks or late-night feasting. While you are there enjoy a Pho-groni, a brand new take on the classic Negroni. The concoction was created by Uncle’s Collins Street Manager, Pete Siganto, who was inspired by the menu’s playful spin on modern Vietnamese fare and decided to use chef Dai Duong’s pho ingredients to create a Negroni with a twist. Cool July FIND WAYS TO STAY WARM IN COOL
MELBOURNE THIS MONTH. BY JENNY BURNS. JULY IS TRADITIONALLY the coldest month in Melbourne but that shouldn’t stop anyone from getting out and exploring the city. Indeed, for many—especially visitors from the Northern Hemisphere—our winters really aren’t cold at all! On the opposite page are eight of our favourite winter experiences.

MELBOURNE’S COOL IN JULY
1
LEARN ABOUT OUR HISTORY Melbourne has some fantastic museums which are not only warm but educational. At Melbourne Museum (museumvictoria.com.au/melbournemuseum) you can learn about Australia’s social history, Indigenous cultures, science and the environment. At the Immigration Museum (museumvictoria.com.au/immigrationmuseum) you can explore Melbourne’s history through stories of people from across the world who have migrated to Victoria. The National Sports Museum (nsm.org.au) honours Australian football, cricket, Olympic Games, horseracing and many other sports. The Old Melbourne Gaol (oldmelbournegaol.com.au) is one of Melbourne’s oldest surviving buildings. Step inside this imposing bluestone institution, a site of over 130 hangings, and enter a world where some of Australia’s most infamous criminals were held, including bushranger Ned Kelly and notorious gangster Squizzy Taylor. Old Treasury Building (otb.org.au) at the top end of Collins Street is widely regarded as one of the finest 19th century buildings in Australia. Designed by 19-year-old architect JJ Clark and built between 1858 and 1862, the building houses the original gold vaults where gold bullion was stored during the gold rush era, as well as rare and historic documents from Public Record Office Victoria, highlighting key moments from Victoria’s history. Here you’ll find several permanent and temporary exhibitions including “Melbourne: Foundations of a city” which tells the story of the city’s astonishing growth.
2
A CULTURAL HIT Visit the National Gallery of Victoria (ngv.vic.gov.au) until 12 July and you can see the works of Vincent Van Gogh. At all times you can see Indigenous and nonIndigenous art from the colonial period to the present day, together with art works from Europe, Asia, America and Oceania. For a different type of cultural hit head to The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (acmi.net.au) which is staging “Wallace & Gromit and Friends: The Magic of Aardman” celebrating 40 years of one of the world’s most successful animation studios.
3
HEAD TO THE THEATRE Taking in a show is another great way to stay warm and be entertained. Our theatres are full of great productions including “The Book of Mormon” at the Princess Theatre (marrinergroup.com.au/venues/ princess-theatre), “My Fair Lady” at the Regent Theatre (marrinergroup.com.au/venues/regent-theatre) and “Aladdin” at Her Majesty’s Theatre (hmt.com.au). Arts Centre Melbourne’s (artscentremelbourne.com.au) theatres are a hive of activity with numerous shows on offer while the Melbourne Theatre Company is staging several plays at Southbank Theatre (mtc.com.au/ your-visit/southbank-theatre).
4
LOOK DOWN ON THE CITY Feeling it is a little too cold or wet to wander the city streets shouldn’t stop you sightseeing. Instead head to one of our ‘tall structures.’ At both Eureka Skydeck (eurekaskydeck.com.au) and the Melbourne Star (melbournestar.com) you’ll be rewarded with wonderful views over the city and beyond in great comfort.
5
GO TO THE FOOTY Do as many locals do and attend an Australian Rules Football match (afl.com.au). Go to Etihad Stadium (etihadstadium. com.au) and you’ll be able to watch the match under the roof, thus avoiding any nasty weather. Head to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (mcg.org.au) and you’ll probably be a little colder but you’ll be watching a match at the ‘spiritual’ home of Aussie Rules.
6
TAKE TO THE ICE Ice skating is synonymous with winter and in Melbourne you can ice skate both indoors and outside. Federation Square’s River Terrace has been transformed into a skating rink complete with fairly lights and music (fedsquare.com/riverrink). MAP 57— St Kilda’s Winter Garden (map57.com), also features an outdoor ice skating rink. If you prefer to skate indoors the O’Brien Group Arena (obriengrouparena.com.au) at Docklands features two Olympic-sized ice skating rinks. You can rent skates plus all the necessary protective equipment. There’s also a range of fun family activities on offer.
7
SHOP Melbourne has long been regarded as Australia’s fashion capital and what better way to spend a cold day than to see why! However, a Melbourne shopping experience is more than just going into a shop. You’ll find lots of interesting retail outlets in laneways and arcades which have long and colourful histories. Our modern shopping arcades and centres also offer numerous educational and memorable experiences!
8
EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY Melbourne prides itself on its restaurants and bars and a cold wet day provides the perfect opportunity to test that reputation. You are sure to find at least a couple of restaurants to satisfy your mood, food taste and budget. Exploring Melbourne’s culinary precincts is another great winter experience. Carlton’s Lygon Street is renowned for its Italian restaurants, Richmond’s Victoria Street has plenty of Vietnamese offerings while Brunswick’s Sydney Road is known for its Lebanese cuisine. Chinatown in the CBD is ideal if you feel like dumplings, Brunswick and Fitzroy are known for their Spanish restaurants while in Footscray you’ll find plenty of Vietnamese and African restaurants. Bar options are just as varied. Whether you’re in search of a cocktail in a large venue with brilliant views or a gin in a small dark bar hidden away in a non-descript laneway, you’ll find it in Melbourne. Restaurants, bars and hotels with open fire places are particularly popular during winter and again you’ll find numerous options in downtown and suburban Melbourne. wheretraveler.com I JULY 2017 I MELBOURNE WHERE 11
SNOW PLAY
Snow Play HEAD TO VICTORIA’S SKI FIELDS FOR SOME COOL WEATHER FUN. BY JENNY BURNS
Mt Hotham. Photo: Karl Gray Media. Mt Buller. Photo: Visit Victoria.
AS THE TEMPERATURE drops the
thoughts of many Melburnians turn to the mountains—or more specifically Victoria’s ski fields. Skiing is one of our most popular winter activities thanks to the location and quality of our snowfields. A two-hour drive will take you to our closest ski resort, Lake Mountain, while drive for around four and a half hours and you’ll come to our highest resort, Mt Hotham. Lake Mountain (around 120 kilometres from Melbourne) is ideal if you’re in search of some ‘snow play’. While there’s no downhill skiing here, the resort offers 37 kilometres of cross-country trails. You can explore these trails on skis or snow shoes. Other facilities include a ski school, three toboggan slopes, a dedicated snowman park and a 240-metre flying fox. lakemountainresort.com.au
Mt Baw Baw is the closest downhill ski resort to Melbourne’s CBD (around 120 kilometres) and features a 35-hectare ski area. Seven lifts service 15 runs with around 25 per cent of the terrain suitable for beginners, 64 per cent intermediate and 11 per cent advanced. The resort also caters for cross country ski lovers and snowboarders. Other facilities include toboggan parks and ski schools while snowshoeing and dog sled tours are also on offer. The resort features a range of accommodation including selfcontained apartments, cabins and hotel and backpacker rooms. mountbawbaw.com.au Victoria’s most popular ski resort, Mt Buller, is around 240 kilometres from Melbourne. The resort features 300 hectares of skiable terrain suitable for everyone from absolute beginners to ski legends. The resort’s lift network is the largest in Victoria, with 22 lifts capable of moving 40,000 people an hour. An extensive snow making area (78 hectares) ensures there’s usually snow throughout the ski season. Other facilities include three terrain parks, an ultra-cross course and two toboggan parks. The resort also features more than 30 eateries and bars and a large range of accommodation options at a variety of price points. Mt Stirling is located right next to Mt Buller and is included in the same entry fee. This untouched area features more than 60 kilometres of maintained trails winding through sheltered woodlands of Alpine Ash and Snow Gums. mtbuller.com.au Falls Creek’s remote, alpine location (the resort is around 387 kilometres from Melbourne) and large surface area of

The resort’s 15 lifts service a skiable area of around 450 hectares (of which 120 hectares is covered by snow making equipment) and over 90 ski runs. Around 17 per cent of terrain is aimed at beginner skiers, 60 per cent at intermediate skiers and 23 per cent advanced. The resort’s ski-in/ski-out accommodation ranges from cosy lodge-style accommodation and budget dorm options to five-star luxury penthouse apartments and spa suites. fallscreek.com.au Located around 375 kilometres from Melbourne, Mt Hotham is one of Australia’s highest alpine villages. Built on a spectacular mountain ridge, the resort features majestic views and terrain to suit all abilities. You can hit the snow on skis, snowboards and toboggans. There’s also cross country, biathlon and night skiing action. Thirteen lifts service over 80 ski runs covering around 320 hectares of ski terrain (with around 33 hectares serviced by snow making). Around 20 per cent are classified as beginner terrain and 40 per cent intermediate and advanced. The resort offers a range of accommodation, restaurants and bars. Located 13 kilometres from Mt Hotham is Dinner Plain. Resort entry fees do not apply to neighbouring Dinner Plain, making it a great option for budget conscious families looking to take advantage of the wide-open spaces, chilled out vibe and child-friendly activities on offer. mthotham.com.au ■ For more information on skiing in Victoria, including day trips and longer tours available to the ski fields, contact your hotel concierge or visit visitvictoria.com/Things-to-do/ Outdoor-activities/Skiing

FOR THE LOVE OF COFFEE
FOR THE LOVE OF
COFFEE
Photo: Mary O’Brien. Quality coffee meets hipster cool at Industry Beans.
DISCOVER THESE FIVE MUST-VISIT MELBOURNE COFFEE ROASTERS, WRITES MARY O’BRIEN. IT’S NO WONDER Melbourne is well
known for its delicious coffee. There are so many good cafés in the city—cosy little spots hidden in back lanes that are worth seeking out. Cool designer joints, hip and happening places and rustic industrial cafés all contribute to a world-class caffeine scene. St Ali in South Melbourne was one of the early pioneers in the coffee revolution. Later, Seven Seeds in Carlton, Market Lane in Prahran and Auction Rooms in North Melbourne raised the bar with their speciality brews. Nothing beats the warm, toasty aroma of beans being roasted on the premises. Some of the bigger places have moved
their roasters offsite but you can still visit these buzzy character-filled cafés with micro-roasting machines:
Staff are keen to help you choose your brew. The food’s pretty good too. If you’re really into your beans, the coffee-rubbed wagyu burger is hard to resist. The street art and Rose Street Market (open on weekends) are another reason to visit. Warehouse 3, 62 Rose Street, Fitzroy. industrybeans.com
Industry Beans Industry Beans is an attractive warehouse café behind Fitzroy’s hipster Brunswick Street. You know you’re in the right place when you see the leafy courtyard out front—perfect on a warm day. Inside polished concrete floors, functional décor and sacks of beans stacked on palettes create an industrial feel. The roaster down the back is where some of the city’s best seasonal blends are created. Coffee geeks will enjoy the detailed coffee menu, which offers espresso and filter options.

Monk Bodhi Dharma What could be more Melbourne than a warehouse café hidden down a lane behind a car park? It takes a bit of searching but once you find Monk Bodhi Dharma you’ll keep coming back. A former bakehouse was transformed into a snug café with exposed beams, distressed walls and hanging lights. Seating is tight with a bench counter, a few little tables and a big hunky communal one with stools. The small roaster and coffee machines

Roasting Warehouse
Roasting Warehouse. Photo: Mary O’Brien.
Looking fresh after a recent revamp, Roasting Warehouse is one of several top eateries in inner-city North Melbourne. The new-look café has polished floors, blue tiles, white brick walls, an attractive communal table and a couple of trendy Slayer coffee machines. The tall black roaster and coffee sacks add to the atmosphere. Coffee fans will be thrilled with the choice of espresso and filter coffee including cold drip, pour over, batch brew and French press. The food is a real star here with innovative dishes such as crab and miso omelette. 19–21 Leveson Street, North Melbourne. roastingwarehouse.com.au
take centre stage—and the mix of coffee and food aromas is a heady one. The food’s so good here you forget it’s vegetarian (vegan options too). Visit off-peak to avoid queues. Balaclava’s Carlisle Street, with its great cafés, offers an insight into Melbourne’s Jewish community. Rear 202 Carlisle Street, Balaclava. monkbodhidharma.com.au
STREAT For feel-good coffee that’s also a top brew, visit STREAT social enterprise café in Collingwood. The building has shaken off its past as a brothel and pub—now it’s home to STREAT’s coffee roastery, bakery and café, which all overlook a lovely leafy courtyard garden. STREAT brews its own Social blend, single origin and batch brews. Breakfast options are rather special here and include quark cheese fritters, son-in-law eggs and haloumi beet hash. The $6.5 million project means STREAT now trains 365 young homeless and disadvantaged people each year. This laid-back destination café is definitely worth making the effort to visit. Look out for Allpress Espresso, another great cafe around the corner. 66 Cromwell Street, Collingwood. streat.com.au

Axil This stylish, spacious Hawthorn café is the home of the Axil coffee empire, founded by Dave Makin and Zoe Delany. They roast all sorts of delicious brews in the roasting and cupping room behind the glass window. This is a serious eatery with vegetarians and gluten-free visitors well catered for. Breakfast includes dark chocolate waffles with peanut butter parfait; zucchini, corn and haloumi fritters; and coffee cured kingfish with poached eggs.

Sovereign Hill has been transformed into a dazzling winter wonderland, complete with Christmas decorations and snow, as part of the Winter Wonderlights Christmas in July celebrations. During the day, the entire Sovereign Hill township evokes a sense of old-world wonder. You can take a stroll down Main Street as snow-flakes fall at regular intervals over the Victorian-style buildings, decorations fill the window displays, watch traditional Christmas-themed pantomimes and listen to carol singers. There are Christmas markets and traditional treats to try, including mulled wine and gingerbread biscuit. Then from 5.45pm Main Street is sparkling. A light projection show lights up 20 of Sovereign Hill’s buildings with large-scale image projections and Christmas animations. The cottages and gardens overlooking Main Street are filled with fairy lights while other highlights include performances from entertainers such as illusionists and acrobats. 1–30 July, Sovereign Hill, 3 Bradshaw Street, Ballarat. 5337 1199. sovereignhill.com.au
‘GREATER TOGETHER’ AT ACCA A new exhibition at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) looks at how we can live and work together better. “Greater Together” presents eight artist projects that complicate individual notions of authorship to focus on ideas of collaboration and cooperation as a means of agency and solidarity in a complex and changing world. The exhibition explores various models of artistic collaboration from conscious, pragmatic decisions to divide skills and labour, to the natural result of long-term friendships, romantic partnerships or family ties. It considers broader ideas of community, communication and cooperation—both in the discipline of art and in the wider, global, networked world. From 8 July, Tue–Fri 10am–5pm, 11am–5pm weekends and public holidays, ACCA, 111 Sturt Street, Southbank. 9697 9999. acca.melbourne

‘The Merchant of Venice’ comes to Melbourne Bell Shakespeare is performing “The Merchant of Venice” at Art Centre Melbourne’s Fairfax Studio this month. One of Shakespeare’s best-known works “The Merchant of Venice” explores the tense relationship and prejudices between those that have, and those that don’t. Dark in its humour and bawdy in its romantic hijinks, it’s a journey of love, mercy and justice. Money makes the world go around. Portia has it. Bassanio wants it. Shylock lends it. Antonio owes the value of it. Love also plays a part. Portia offers it. Bassanio wants it. And Antonio may lose a pound of flesh for it. The production stars Mitchell Butel as the defiant Shylock, and Jessica Tovey as Portia.

Circus Oz’s ‘Model Citizens’

Circus Oz’s new production, “Model Citizens”, blends the risk and beauty of physical improbability with theatricality, choreography and the group’s distinct brand of Australian humour. Acrobats back-flip off a giant vertical clothes peg, become tangled in an oversized cotton reel, roll bowling balls haphazardly, unzip giant zippers, balance on a house of oversized collapsing cards and fly high in an enormous pair of aerial undies! The musical is based on the Disney 1992 film of the same name and tells of poverty stricken Aladdin (Ainsley Melham) who meets Princess Jasmine (Hiba Elchikhe) in the marketplace and falls in love. Of course there are many barriers in the way of their love but with the help of Genie (Michael James Scott) and Aladdin’s friends Babkak (Troy Sussman), Omar (Robert Tripolino) and Kassim (Adam-Jon Fiorentino) true love prevails. The show features such musical delights as “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?”, “On The Street Where You Live”, “I Could Have Danced All Night” and “Get Me to the Church on Time”. ‘The Book of Mormon’ Wows Audiences
The award-winning “The Book of Mormon” is playing to packed houses at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre. The politically incorrect, satirical and extremely funny musical tells the story of two newly trained Mormon missionaries who are sent to a Ugandan village to spread their religion’s teachings. Elder Price (Ryan Bondy) is polite, devoted, extremely confident and ambitious. He’s less than happy to be going to Africa and also not too thrilled with his ‘partner’, Elder Cunningham (A.J. Holmes). Cunningham is ‘socially challenged’, clumsy, a compulsive liar and is just looking for a friend. Finding converts among the war-lord controlled, impoverished, disease-ravaged inhabitants of the village to which they are assigned proves more difficult than anticipated. After Elder Price has a crisis of faith it’s up to the hapless Elder Cunningham to save the villagers’ souls. He finds an ally in Nabulungi (Zahra Newman) daughter of the village’s chief Mafala (Bert LaBonte). Excellent performances from all cast members, many funny lines and big musical numbers brilliantly choreographed and performed by an enthusiastic ensemble ensures “The Book of Mormon” lives up to the hype that surrounds it.

Geraldine Hakewill and Jai Courtney star in “Macbeth”. Photo: Jeff Busby.
The Melbourne Theatre Company is staging two plays during July. Playing until 15 July is Simon Phillips’ fearsome reinterpretation of “Macbeth”. In the aftershock of battle, flushed with victory, two soldiers have a bizarre encounter. Three unearthly women predict for them unimaginable greatness. But when the first of their prophecies comes true, one of them dares to imagine, sparking the reign of Shakespeare’s most tormented tyrant. Driven to increasing
horror in attempts to cover their tracks and second-guess rivals, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth sink deeper and deeper into isolation and madness. Stars of the production include Jai Courtney as Macbeth and Geraldine Hakewill as Lady Macbeth. Opening on 8 July is “Noises Off” which many regard as one of the funniest plays ever written. A clumsy bombshell, a despotic director and a stuttering actor. It was never going to be easy staging a bedroom farce on tour, with a mediocre cast, but this is complete pandemonium! On stage, it’s a whirl of slamming doors, missed cues, dropped lines and dropped trousers. Backstage, it’s a chaotic maelstrom of love triangles and trampled egos, and there’s no one without an axe to grind or swing. The production stars Simon Burke, Ray Chong Nee, Libby Munro, Nicki Wendt and Louise Siversen. “Macbeth”, until 15 July, Southbank Theatre, The Sumner, 140 Southbank Boulevard, Southbank. “Noises Off”, from 8 July, Arts Centre Melbourne’s Playhouse, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne. 8688 0800. mtc.com.au
Dracula’s Cabaret Dracula’s new show “Resurrection” plays like a greatest hits on scratched vinyl. It brings together the most requested acts of the past decade, revamped with striking costumes, mesmerising special effects and serrated edge comedy. “Resurrection” blends music production acts, optical illusion, animatronic sculpture and rock-circus, with a song list that moves across the AM dial from Arctic Monkeys to Blondie. Add a dangerously talented cast that look like they’ve been attacked with a bedazzler by a drag queen stylist and you start to get the picture. It’s flashy, kitsch hysteria, with no act too audacious and no heel too high. Tickets include dinner, show, ghost train ride and the amazing new simulated graveyard experience. Squatters and Savages Explored at Ballarat
Art Gallery of Ballarat is staging “Squatters and Savages: Peter WaplesCrowe and Megan Evans”. This collaborative exhibition by artists Peter Waples-Crowe and Megan Evans brings together reflections on both colonisers and Indigenous people in a creative reimagining, responding to colonial images in the Art Gallery of Ballarat’s print collection. Waples-Crowe is Ngarigo and his work reflects on the representation of Aboriginal people in popular culture. Evans is of Scottish, Irish and Welsh heritage, born on Wurundjerri land, and her work examines the role of her ancestors in the brutal history of this country. With two different perspectives Waples-Crowe and Evans allow visitors to view the exhibition as both a European coloniser and as an Indigenous person faced with sudden and violent upheaval.

glamour. It’s a boulevard of chic designer shopping, five-star hotels, exclusive jewellers, grand heritage buildings, churches, theatres and private clubs. It’s Melbourne’s premier commercial streetscape with a number of Australia’s largest corporations calling Collins Street home and it has also been the setting for some of Australia’s best known paintings. While there have been many changes over the years with the construction of a number of modern buildings, its fine nineteenth-century heritage is still strongly evident. Then there are the wonderful plane trees, which line the street looking particularly stunning at night under lights. One of the reasons for Collins Street’s continual appeal is its ability to change with the times. Since 1837 it has been rebuilt several times. It’s also been extended—the last occurring with the continuation of the street across Spencer Street railway lines and into Docklands. However what hasn’t changed is the street’s appeal as both a business and leisure hub. A Collins Street address is still coveted by major businesses and professionals. The Regent and Athenaeum Theatres continue to attract theatregoers from around the world while worshippers flock to its three historic churches—the Collins Street Baptist Church, St Michael’s Uniting Church and Scots' Church. Nature delights at
Phillip Island ONE OF THE BEST ways to spend a winter night is to watch Phillip Island’s amazingly cute little penguins come ashore from a day’s fishing and waddle to their sand dune burrows. Fortunately there are many different ways to see this very appealing natural phenomenon as the Phillip Island Nature Parks offers seven options catering for all budgets and interests. These range from general viewing (that is sitting on stands on the beach watching the penguins leave the water) to exclusive ranger led tours. Having experienced a number of these tours one of the newer options— Underground Viewing—has become one of my favourites. Not only does it offer wonderful views of the penguins but it’s also protected from the elements! Built below the newly constructed Penguin Plus viewing stand, this bunker style building features a

25-metre viewing window which looks out at ground level onto the path many of the penguins take from the water to their burrows. Watching the reaction of the hundreds of penguins taking the path to the window was fascinating. Some ignored it, some came up very close for a look and a couple even bumped into it, ensuring some magical penguin viewing experiences. A ranger explained what we could expect before the arrival of the first penguins and then walked around the group explaining the behaviours we were seeing. Twenty minutes after the arrival of the first penguins we could leave the bunker and head up to the Penguin Plus stands which meant we could hear the many and varied noises the penguins were making. They are a noisy bunch! Given numbers on Underground Viewing are limited to 70 it’s a good idea

to book early. The same advice applies to all penguin watching options as demand is extremely high. The new viewing area is one of several new initiatives at Phillip Island over the last year or so. Another is the Antarctic Journey, located at the Nobbies. It uses numerous interactive and immersive experiences to explain and explore Antarctica. A joint venture between Phillip Island Nature Parks and WWF-Australia, the exhibition includes numerous hands-on activities and a multimedia experience. Together with some great audio-visual footage of Antarctica, this area also features impressive ‘augmented reality’ technology, which creates the illusion of being able to touch a penguin, stroke a seal and see a killer whale up close. Tickets to the Antarctic Journey can be purchased individually or as part of the four park super pass. The pass also includes entry to the Penguin Parade, the Koala Conservation Centre where you can see koalas close up in their natural habitat and the historic Churchill Island. MAGICAL WATERS ‘TAKING THE WATERS’ has long been a
favourite pastime of visitors to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs. Given the towns and surrounding areas have Australia’s richest concentration of mineral springs it’s easy to see why. However, there’s a lot more to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs than magical waters. Wonderful food, fascinating shops and galleries and interesting attractions are just some of the many delights on offer. Just the same, any visit should include a mineral water experience and there’s no better place than the Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa. The original Edwardian bathhouse in the Mineral Springs Reserve, built approximately 1895, has undergone a $13 million makeover and now boasts more than 30 wet and dry treatment rooms, making it one of the largest spas in the country. It offers such indulgences as a large mineral relaxation pool and private 100% pure mineral water baths, aroma steam treatment room, Vichy rooms, a large relaxation lounge and its very own Hepburn Pavilion Café. The curative effects of mineral water, salt water and steam provide the ultimate
in therapeutic relaxation in the exclusive Sanctuary wing. The Sanctuary includes the Aroma Steam Room, Salt Therapy Pool, Relaxation Pool, Spa Couches submerged beneath mineral water and an extensive relaxation deck. You can also choose from an array of treatments including indulgent 100% pure private mineral baths, therapeutic and relaxation massages, organic facials, and a selection of indulgent spa rituals. Experienced spa goers will appreciate the sophistication of their professional practitioners and extensive treatment menu. While in the Mineral Springs Reserve, drop into the Hepburn Pavilion Café for a late breakfast or a light lunch made with fresh local ingredients. The Hepburn Pavilion Café has been offering hospitality to locals and visitors alike since 1908 and provides an atmospheric environment for a meal, or fabulous coffee and cake, before or after your Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa experience. Not far from the bathhouse is another of the region’s popular attractions, Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm. Here you can learn about the lavender and olives grown on
the property, wander around herb, cottage and potage gardens and buy locally made goods in the shop. These goods make great presents, especially if you’re looking for something uniquely Australian. Indeed, there’s plenty of great retail therapy available in the area. You’ll find everything from great art at galleries such as The Convent to Alpaca Passion, which sells alpaca-made products. While Daylesford is an easy day trip from Melbourne (it takes around 90 minutes), it’s worth staying a few days. Then you can take full advantage of its many delights. BALLARAT Escape the big smoke and head to historic Ballarat this month for art and architecture. OVER THE HILLS, but not far away, is an enticing pot of gold calling out for you to come and play. Ballarat, just 115km from Melbourne and easily accessible by train, is the historically rich and culturally warm city just waiting for you to explore. Art and architecture are abundant in Ballarat and its historic villages, such as Clunes, Buninyong and Creswick, and they enrich the region’s ambience. Couple the striking streetscapes with award-winning food and wine outlets and Ballarat will tempt you to linger a little longer. Of course you can fit a lot into one day—but why not make a night (or several) of it? Stay in a rural retreat, fantastic family caravan park, or indulge in one of the city’s grand accommodation options. So, let curiosity get the better of you—jump in the car, step onto the train, or get on-board a bus—and visit this handsome city in all its golden glory.
FAMILY ATTRACTIONS Sovereign Hill, an internationally acclaimed tourist attraction, brings to life the colour and excitement of Australia’s
1850s gold rush. It’s just like stepping back in time to gold rush Ballarat—from the hustle and bustle of Main Street where costumed ladies and gents parade their new-found wealth, to the excitement of the diggings where visitors can pan for real gold! BY PETER M cBREARTY MANY DINERS ARE INCREASINGLY finding themselves drawn to venues located in and around the Flinders Lane area of the Central Business District, an area which is swiftly becoming known as one of Melbourne’s recognised restaurant Meccas. Tucked away down a small alley is The French Brasserie. First time visitors may initially be surprised by the fact The French Brasserie can often be busy even early in the week. Once diners have experienced the warm welcome provided by irrepressible proprietor Hadj Sadki, friendly and urbane restaurant manager Gauthier Georgelot, and their equally friendly and knowledgeable staff (all of whom attend to diners with cheerful Gallic efficiency), the many attractions of this cheerful French venue swiftly become apparent. Divided into two levels, with a bar running along one side of the ground floor and a warm, attractive modern simplicity to the décor, the French accents of the staff and the occasional passing plate of snails or onion soup will leave diners in no doubt as to the focus of the cuisine. Hors d’oeuvres may include delectable nibbles such as Rilettes de Canards or a Terrine de Campagne (a delicious rustic terrine), or Croquettes de brandade (salt cod croquettes) with sauce Espagnole. Entrées include freshly shucked oysters with a piquant mignonette sauce; an appealing charcuterie selection of house made terrine, pâté and cured meats, a delicious traditional Soupe à l’oignon (which really needs no translation) in addition to another perfect winter soup of chestnuts, foie gras and chestnut mousse. For those for whom no visit to a French restaurant would be complete without a snail or two, the Escargots de Bourgogne à l’ail (snails in garlic and herb butter) taste just as good as they sound. In honour of the onset of winter, a decadent Boeuf Bourguignon is once again on the menu on Wednesdays, while the main courses on offer throughout the week include other delectable variations on classic French dishes which can be enjoyed at any time, yet seem so very well suited to cold, wet Melbourne evenings. There is a hearty cassoulet (white bean ragout with confit duck leg, pork belly and Toulouse sausage), the Canard à l’orange (duck breast, baby turnips, parsnip, marmalade, and orange sauce), and also a fragrant Bouillabaisse, the classic Marseilles fish and crustacean stew with rouille sauce and croûtons. The Cou de porc (12-hour braised pork neck, poached apple, house made sauerkraut, crispy skin and a juniper berry jus) is equally satisfying, as is the eye fillet steak served with caramelised shallots, bone marrow, red wine jus and pommes frites. Diners may elect to look no further than the crème brûlée to finish, although equally tempting are the chocolate fondant with a salted caramel centre, nuts, biscuit, raspberry coulis and crème fraiche, while there is also the option of a selection of fine French cheeses. The French Brasserie is a warm, oasis of fine food and wine served with genuine French hospitality, and while regular patrons will already be well aware of the wisdom of booking early for the popular Bastille Day dinner in July, reservations are also more generally advisable, as while this is definitely one of Melbourne’s hidden gems, it would seem that as time goes by diners are managing to find their way there nonetheless—even early in the week. ■

LES CLEFS D’OR
LES CLEFS D’OR able to eat we were treated to Thai tea ice cream. It was a great night and all involved were certainly well fed! One of Melbourne’s finest Italian restaurants, Sarti, invited the concierge to come in and sample their new menu. Up the famous stairs into their lovely contemporary dining room, we were treated to a fantastic modern Italian menu. This classic Melbourne restaurant is recommended to all.
■
Concierge at Merchant Osteria Veneta.
The concierge of Melbourne were invited by Crown Melbourne to come and sample some of their fine dining restaurants. We were treated to a progressive dinner through the complex. Starting off at Nobu we tried a fantastic trio of sashimi. Moving upstairs, Silks was our next stop and there we sampled aburi scallops in steamed egg custard. Our journey then took us to Koko for some teppanyaki grilled toothfish. Next on our food tour was the French restaurant, Bistro Guillaume. There we sampled their main of duck confit with peas. And our last stop for the night was the Thai restaurant Long Chim. For those still ■
Hana is a new restaurant on the block and also a new cuisine to come to Melbourne— Hawaiian! Several of the concierge were lucky enough to get an invite to sample their new menu and tour the restaurant. Focusing on fresh produce and a high level of seafood. It was fantastic to try and well recommended to everyone. I must also recommend the ‘sharknado’ cocktail, it is worth it for the glass alone!
■
■ Concierge also visited Merchant Osteria
Veneta in Melbourne’s CBD for dinner. This Italian eatery has fantastic Venetian flair, and an incredible menu. We loved the risotto zucchini, and the pork and fennel sausages.
