SUMMER SURVIVAL Orlando’s theme parks burst with fun, but if you’ve ever spent a sizzling summer afternoon wandering about with the kids in tow, you’ve likely learned a lesson or two. Here are some top tips for rising above Orlando’s heat and humidity and ensuring everyone stays cool, comfortable and having the time of their lives. —Laura Anders Lee GET THERE EARLY Orlando’s theme parks generally open at 9 am. Plan to walk through the gates right on time, and then head straight to the most-popular attractions, like SeaWorld’s Make roller coaster, Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland. Definitely make a game plan ahead of time so you don’t waste time traveling across the park figuring out what to do next.
STAY HYDRATED
After lunch, head back to your resort for a dip in the pool or some quiet time indoors to recharge. There’s more fun to be had after the sun goes down.
Kudos to the theme parks for allowing guests to bring in bottled water and coolers. Having plenty of cold water at your fingertips is vital in the heat, not to mention saves precious money. For a splurge, try frozen favorites like Mickey Mouse ear ice-cream bars at Disney parks or Dole Whip, the refreshing blend of ice cream with pineapple available at Magic Kingdom’s Adventureland. And of course, Harry Potter fans love a frozen butterbeer at Universal’s Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade. The recipe was invented by Universal chefs with help from J.K. Rowling herself.
BE TRANSPORTATION SAVVY
SPLASH AROUND
Take a picture of where you parked, and take the tram for added convenience at Walt Disney World. Disney, Universal and SeaWorld offer premium parking for an additional fee, which may be worth it when you’re hot and tired at the end of the day!
Orlando’s theme parks offer water attractions to cool off the crowds, whether it’s a pint-sized splashpad, thundering rapids or a ride down a thrilling waterfall. Bring a change of clothes and wear waterproof shoes. Summer is also an ideal time to visit water parks like Aquatica, Wet ‘n’ Wild, Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon and Legoland.
TAKE A BREAK

of Harry Potter. SeaWorld’s Quick Queue Unlimited starts at $19 per day in addition to admission.
DON’T WAIT IN LINE Download a theme-park waittime app to your smart phone. Take advantage of Disney’s free FastPass+ program, where you can reserve three rides per day and skip the standby line. After your third ride, you can visit a kiosk to make a fourth reservation. Universal Orlando Resort offers an Express Pass Unlimited, which ranges from $54.99$84.99, which is good for all rides except at Wizarding World
SCHEDULE INDOOR ATTRACTIONS Ahh ... air-conditioning. For every outdoor attraction, schedule an indoor attraction for a muchneeded break, whether it’s a 4-D simulator like Universal Studios’ “Shrek,” a live show like SeaWorld’s “Pets Ahoy!” or exhibits like Epcot’s Innoventions pavilion and “The Seas with Nemo & Friends” aquarium.
The World of Avatar’s family-friendly Na’vi River Journey, new at Walt Disney World
Hot & New Fresh, fun rides to check out.
WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT It seems like there’s always something making headlines at Disney World, and this summer is no different. At the end of May, “Pandora— The World of Avatar” opened at Animal Kingdom, encouraging guests to voyage through bioluminescent rainforests they may recognize from James Cameron’s 2009 film, while sailing down the hidden Na’vi river. In another ride, more thrills can be had on the back of a mountain banshee. In the Magic Kingdom Park, evening festivities kick up with the all-new spectacle “Happily Ever After.” Fireworks and projections illuminate the sky surrounding Cinderella Castle set to music from
favorite animated films, including “The Little Mermaid” and “Moana.” 407.939.5277, www. disneyworld. disney.go.com
UNIVERSAL ORLANDO RESORT This summer also sees the debut of Universal Orlando Resort’s third theme park, Universal’s Volcano Bay. The South Pacific-themed water attraction is laced with Maori elements and islander food (like jerk mahi sandwiches). Its major—and soon to be
iconic—feature is the 200-foot Krakatau Volcano—yes, it erupts. Across 25 acres, nearly three dozen experiences run the gamut from wave pools to winding rivers to sandy beaches, while adventures see guests whizzing down body slides (that begin their descent from the top of Krakatau), whirling on rafts, and just generally relishing fair weather pleasures in a mythical paradise. 407.363.8000, www.universal orlando.com —LH

LOCAL FLAVOR
Summer’s Coolest Cocktails Four cocktails so fresh, so unique, that we bet you can’t drink just one. BY MEGAN PADILLA
Strong Water Tavern at Universal Orlando’s Sapphire Falls Resort relies on a centuries-old recipe for its milk punch. What begins as a stew of black tea, Flor de Cana 7-year rum, lemon peel and boiled milk results three-days later as a clear, refreshing, slightly citrusy, not too-sweet and absolutely addicting cocktail, served over a single hunk of ice carved from a slab behind the bar. G&T fans won’t want to waste a sip on anything but the Corazon de Espana at Tapo Toro, the Spanish restaurant on I-Drive. Tapo Toro discards the notion of a two-ingredient cocktail and blends theirs with the essence of gin’s fermentation process: Bombay Sapphire Gin, seasonal herbs, clementine, Fever Tree Tonic and juniper berries. The result is refreshing, floral and citrusy. The award for most Instagram-worthy cocktail goes to the Snow Cosmopolitan at Park Social, a hidden-away, second-floor bar above a corner café called Boca. This cosmo, made of Smirnoff Orange Vodka, white cranberry peach juice, fresh lime, triple sec and agave syrup, is served with a dry ice garnish that transforms the ordinary into a magic potion. Paddlefish’s Not Everyone’s Margarita is spicy from jalapenos, smokey from the course black sea salt on its rim, and tastes of blackberry from Crème de Mure. It’s also got a good kick from two kinds of agave-based liquors: Nuestra Soledad Mezcal and El Destilador Blanco. It is best sipped from the rooftop deck of the restored paddlewheel restaurant in Disney Springs.

REIMAGINED
Paddlefish Cross the gangplank here and the smell of Old Bay seasoning and a sophisticated slate of coastal blues and grays promises a traditional Eastern-shore seafood boil isn’t far away. This paddlewheel has been an anchor of Walt Disney World dining since it was christened the Empress Lilly in 1977, then remade as Fulton Fish House in 1996, and finally transformed again this year. Chef Mark Boor’s inventive menu was aimed to “take an iconic restaurant with a 40-year history and reimagine it.” Every single item, right down to the condiments, is made from scratch and cooked to order. Seafood is ethicallysourced and brought in only from environmentally-friendly fish farms and marine fisheries with healthy eco-systems. Boor’s creations such as the perfectly seared scallops, as well as his “bet you can’t eat just one” lobster corndogs served with
a chili aioli easily stand up to those of his James Beard awardwinning neighbors. Other standouts include a whole branzino crusted in sea salt, baked for 30 minutes and carved tableside.
mango salsa and an asparagus salad with watermelon radish. A platter of peel-and-eat Mayport shrimp from Jacksonville is only $11, and the second-best seller is the ceviche, whose ingredients change based on whatever is fresh. Oysters are the only item broadly sourced and aficionados can expect to taste varieties from at least three geographic regions.

With sea bass that will melt in your mouth, steaks that are to-die-for and scallops that might possibly change your life, Eddie V’s is on point every time. Start with a classic cocktail on the pretty patio by the water or relax in the lounge to the sounds of a jazz-laced happy hour session, and then head into the dimly-lit fine dining room for some serious eating. Start with East or West coast oysters, and follow it up with creamy lobster bisque, a specialty of New England. Don’t Miss Tiffany at the Morse Museum WINTER PARK, Fla. — Of the many unexpected pleasures awaiting visitors to Central Florida, none may be as dazzling as a stroll through the galleries of The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany. The Tiffany collection at the Morse includes the designer’s jewelry, pottery, paintings, and art glass, as well as his famed leadedglass lamps and windows. Highlights include the restored ByzantineRomanesque chapel interior that Tiffany designed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and art and architectural objects from his celebrated Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall. The Morse, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this season, was founded by Jeannette Genius McKean (1909–89) in 1942 and named for her industrialist grandfather. She and her husband, Hugh F. McKean (1908–95), the Museum’s director until his death, built the collection over a 50-year period. In 1957, when a fire ravaged Tiffany’s Laurelton Hall, the McKeans salvaged all they could from the ruins for the Morse. In the Museum’s galleries, visitors will also find exhibits of American art pottery, Art Nouveau objects, and late 19th-and early 20th-century American paintings. The Polite Pig
Since this authentic-style modern Mexican restaurant opened on the shores of Lake Ivanoe in March, it’s all locals can “tacobout”—their word, not ours, but we love it. For starters, the guacamole is served with chicharron instead of the usual suspect (tortilla chips), although you can have those, too, if you ask. Other delights include fresh market-fish ceviche, sweet (and spicy) corn soup, chile-grilled salmon, Mexican-style barbecue pork ribs and six different types of tacos. The bar program measures up with signature agave cocktails including a Tajín-dusted margarita and a south-of-the-border riff on an Old Fashioned in the Up In Smoke, complete with habañero bitters. 1414 N. Orange Ave.
In Disney Springs news, this modern barbecue joint serves up all three with pleasure. Coffee-rubbed brisket, sweet St. Louisstyle ribs and maple-mustard-glazed wild salmon come out of the smoker. Local craft beers (and cocktails) are poured by the pitcher, and the bourbon selection wades 50 deep. Town Center, 407.938.7444.

Orlando Your Way
‘Tweens
Rainy Day
Luxury
The I-Drive 360 on International Drive is perfect for a night out with teens and tweens. A highlight is (1) Madame Tussauds, the world-renowned wax attraction. They won’t believe just how lifelike their favorite celebrities are—this outing has Snapchat written all over it. Speaking of celebrities, famousfavorite sweet shop and restaurant (2) Sugar Factory resides at the I-Drive 360. Signature drinks all come in non-alcoholic versions with jaw-dropping elements like dry-ice and candy necklaces. The King Kong Sundae will certainly impress the table with its 26 scoops of ice cream and sparklers. Step out-of-doors for an adventure at (3) Paddleboard Orlando on scenic Lake Killarney. Afterward, hit Trader Joe’s or Shake Shack for a burger and a game of ping-pong right on the water.
The gorgeous, four-story (1) Orlando Science Center provides educational fun for all ages. Check out traveling shows or explore the permanent collections to learn about space, dinosaurs, alligators and more. Stay for a movie or documentary on the IMAX. Over on International Drive, (2) Kings Bowl provides family-friendly bowling by day and a lounge setting by night with a full-service bar and billiards. After you’ve worked up an appetite, order from the restaurant menu that far exceeds the food at your bowling alley back home. For those who like a challenge, spend a game night among friends. Escape games have taken the country by storm, and for good reason. At (3) Escapology, you find clues, solve puzzles and pick locks in order to escape the room in just 60 minutes or less.
Local gem (1) Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art features the largest comprehensive collection of stained-glass lamps, art and even an entire chapel, designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, son of the famous jeweler. For cigar aficionados, (2) Corona Cigar Co. is your spot. Hard-to-find cigars and vintage bottles of rum, tequila and bourbon are in stock and each store has a humidor and features an upscale bar with cocktail service. Five-star restaurant (3) Victoria & Albert’s at Walt Disney World’s Grand Floridian is led by James Beard award-winner Chef Scott Hunnel. The prix fixe menu paired with wines is served leisurely over a few hours. For the ultimate experience, try the Chef’s Table with an astounding 13 courses served in Hunnel’s kitchen.
