A Historic Roman Eatery Celebrates an Impressive Milestone
N
ot many restaurants can boast of a history that goes back 100 years. In this day and age, crossing the finish line of a century is a rare accomplishment. Notable historic figures, including Jean Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and Roman poet Trilussa, as well as politicians and other celebrities, frequented the restaurant in its golden era. Since then it’s been completely renovated, yet continues to offer the same timeless Roman cuisine that made it famous. Homage is paid to the Capital’s top specialties with dishes featuring fiori di zucca and twice-fried artichokes made in the Jewish-Roman style, as well as classic Roman pasta dishes like tonnarelli cacio e pepe; bucatini all’amatriciana; and rigatoni alla gricia.
If you prefer a hearty meat dish, try saltimbocca alla romana; oxtails; or trippa alla romana. The menu also serves fresh Mediterranean fare, including spaghetti with clams; ravioli with ricotta and spinach; risotto with scampi; scialatielli pasta with seafood; veal meatballs with tomato and basil; turkey fillet with Gruyere cream sauce and mushrooms; and the catch of the day. The stars of the dessert menu are the pistachio tiramisù and the homemade chocolate cake, and the thorough wine list features over 200 labels. The environment, which is divided into three rooms and a veranda, is warm and welcoming, attended by a friendly and efficient staff. >Via Montecatini, 12. Tel 066791160. ristoranteilfalchetto.it

Felice in Testaccio is a historic restaurant in the Testaccio district, a neighborhood renowned for the authenticity of its cuisine. The recently restored dĂŠcor, featuring clever design touches like black and white floors, iron accents, and chic light fixtures, creates a modern and cozy ambiance that contrasts with their tradition of oldfashioned Roman cuisine. Following the classic gastronomic calendar that has been adhered to by the hostarias of the city for over a century, Felice has remained stubbornly true to itself and to its roots, not yielding to culinary fads or trends of the moment. The wine list impresses for the breadth and depth of its vintages, and the service is straightforward and informal, just how the regulars like it. Book well in advance as this authentic gastronomic institution is packed with loyal regulars every night of the week.
