The Essential St. Louis Yes, St. Louis in July is hot, but we have a number of ways to keep cool, not the least of which is our stellar collection of water parks. Plus, there's plenty of inside fun at the Fox Theatre, Peabody Opera House, Sheldon Concert Hall, Saint Louis art Museum and Missouri History Museum— all of them mentioned in this issue. Still, if you want to brave the heat, head over to Forest Park for Fair Saint Louis, our big Independence Day celebration, or prowl through the enormous outdoor collection of trains at the Museum of Transportation (plenty of indoor stuff, too). 90 MINUTES IN:

As you drive into the campus, you pass by a twin-engine 1943 Douglas Aircraft, the military version of the DC-3, and the HT Potts Tugboat, the first tug (1933) to have an allsteel welded hull (instead of a riveted hull). The collection also includes a Fifth Avenue Coach Co. bus from New York and a Lockheed T-33 U.S. Air Force training aircraft. And you haven't even begun to explore the trains. Head south from the welcome desk and climb aboard a Boston & Boston & Providence Railroad Passenger Coach (1933), a Union Pacific #4006 (the largest successful steam locomotive ever built) or a 6,600-hp, two-engine Union Pacific diesel #6944 (“Centennial”), built by General Motors’ ElectroMotive Division in 1971. HOT ATTRACTIONS
The Treasures of Forest Park Officially established in 1876, 1,300-acre Forest Park boasts not just a rambling panorama of forests, meadows and waterways, but a collection of some of St. Louis’ best attractions, like the Saint Louis Science Center, currently showing The Discovery of King Tut, a spectacular exhibit of 1,000 recreations of Egyptian treasures scientifically and expertly hand-crafted over five years by Egyptian artisans.

FREE ADMISSION!
Yes, admission to most of the Forest Park attractions is free (Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis Science Center, Saint Louis Zoo, Missouri History Museum), and the last rows of The Muny outdoor musical theater are also free, but you might still pay for parking, special exhibits and special experiences. Still, if you don’t mind walking, it’s possible to have a completely complimentary day in Forest Park, although we recommend springing for some of those special experiences, because they are fantastic. By the way, the Forest Park Trolley connects all the park’s attractions for an all-day pass of $2 for adults and $1 for kids.
SAINT LOUIS SCIENCE CENTER Host of the aforementioned King Tut exhibit, the SLSC invites visitors to investigate, explore, and engage with science through fun and interactive learning experiences, 700+ permanent galleries, live science demonstrations and special exhibitions. St. Louis Your Way
History Buff
Art Collector
Beer Lover
As a European city in America, St. Louis is quite old (1764) and boasts a nice collection of historic homes to prove it. (1) ChatillonDeMenil Mansion (1849) has a commanding presence at the eastern edge of Cherokee Antique Row, where preservationists actually effected the re-routing of I-55 to save it from demolition, which is why you can visit it today and learn the colorful stories of its inhabitants. (2) Samuel Cupples House, (1888) situated on the Saint Louis University Campus, offers an extravagant look into the life of one of St. Louis' most successful citizens. (3) Campbell House Museum, (1851) a vestige of one of St. Louis' earliest exclusive neighborhoods, was the home of renowned fur trader and entrepreneur, Robert Campbell.
The gallery scene in St. Louis offers art for every taste. (1) Serendipity Gallery, in The Loop, shows eclectic work by local and national artists, and is home to St. Louis' only Artomat art vending machine. For a peek at the international art world, you might stop by (2) Atrium Gallery in the Central West End, where you're likely to see the work of acclaimed artists like Claudio Bravo, Blanca Botero, Natalia Arias, Willem de Looper, Claudia DeMonte and many more. (3) Third Degree Glass Factory, which conducts classes and serves as a studio for a number of resident artists, shows work produced here as well as a full schedule of non-glass art by mostly local artists. Its Third Friday open house, featuring glassworking demonstrations, is a blast.
St. Louis is justly famous as a beer-making Mecca, home to a growing collection of breweries large and small. The beer behemoth, (1) Anheuser-Busch dominates the beer scene here at its sprawling campus just south of downtown, where the tours constitute some of the city's most popular tourist activities. You can also tour the modest (compared to A-B) facility at the (2) Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood, which nevertheless is one of the city's most successful micro-brewing enterprises. Grab lunch or dinner here after the tour. (3) 4 Hands Brewing Co., a relative newcomer on the St. Louis beer scene, has earned a solid reputation as a brewer of merit and imagination with beers named Downfall, Snake Oil, Send Help, and Absence of Light.
