a two-hour drive west of Sydney’s CBD. Explore this incredible region and enjoy galleries, cafés and natural wonders.
A visit to the Blue Mountains isn’t complete without meeting the famous Three Sisters at Echo Point. These unusual rock formations tower over the Jamison Valley, representing three sisters who, according to Aboriginal legend, were turned to stone. Follow signs at Echo Point to the start of one of the most iconic bushwalks in the Blue Mountains
Scenic World is a great way to see the majestic Blue Mountains, particularly if you have kids or are mobility impaired. It consists of four activities: the Scenic Skyway, the Scenic Railway, the Scenic Cableway and the Scenic Walkway. The Scenic Skyway, constructed in 1958, was Australia’s first cable car. It glides 270 metres over the Jamison Falls Valley between two cliff tops. Or, you can make your way to the Jamison Valley floor via the Scenic Railway with its 52-degree incline, it’s the steepest passenger railway in the world. The Railway ends on the valley floor, at the start of the Scenic Walkway, a 2.4-kilometre elevated walkway through the towering rainforest. WHAT TO SEE AND DO Norman Lindsay Gallery and Museum While driving up through Faulconbridge it’s easy to miss a tiny turn off on the main road that leads to the Norman Lindsay Gallery. This hidden gem is the former home and gallery of acclaimed Australian artist and writer Norman Lindsay, perhaps best known for his tales of the Magic Pudding and drawings of sumptuous nudes. Visitors can admire Lindsay’s paintings, etchings and drawings inside the sandstone cottage that was bought by his wife, Rose, in 1913 and remained his home, studio and gallery until Lindsay’s death in 1969. Now run by the National Trust, a visit to “Springwood”, as the property was named, is a whimsical walk through the past. The cottage and artist studio give a glimpse into Lindsay’s life on the property, and the 42 acres of land it’s set on is dotted with Lindsay’s distinctive sculptures. 14 Norman Lindsay Cresent, Faulconbridge. 4751 1067. normanlindsay.com.au

SHOPPING ABORIGINAL ART Left: Kurun Warun, “Dry Riverbed”, acrylic on linen, 90 x 120cm, from Aboriginal Art Galleries.
BUYING ABORIGINAL ART BY SUSAN GOUGH HENLY ABORIGINAL ART IS MYSTICAL and awe-inspiring and displays a profound connection with the unique Australian landscape. It also offers an exciting journey of discovery into one of the world’s oldest surviving cultures. Yet because it is so different from Western art it can be difficult to know how to identify and buy authentic pieces. Here are some valuable insights into the incredible diversity of Aboriginal art and how to go about finding the best pieces to suit your budget. Archaeologists have dated Aboriginal rock art as far back as 40,000 years or more. Aboriginals have been creating other less permanent art forms, including body, bark and sand art, for untold centuries. Aboriginal culture is rooted in the land. There are not one but many different Aboriginal cultures spread across every 20 WHERE SYDNEY I JULY 2017 I wheretraveler.com
part of the country. Each has its own language and complex belief system that explains the universe and the place of people within it. Because there are so many distinctive Aboriginal cultures there is also a great diversity of artistic styles and media, from the well-known dot paintings of the Western Desert to the Western Kimberley’s ghost-like Wandjina creation ancestors with huge mouthless faces. Traditional Aboriginal art practitioners do not see themselves as artists but as storytellers. Since there are no written languages, the making of artworks is all about sharing a spiritual association with a specific landscape or ‘country’ as well as communicating obligations to this ‘country’ through Dreaming stories and Songlines. The Dreamtime describes the time of creation when enormous mythic creatures roamed the Earth creating
landforms and deciding which people could live in each special place. The stories are told via many different media. Traditionally, there was rock art, sand and body paintings as well as ochre bark paintings, wood carvings and fibre weaving, the latter portable art still available today. Contemporary Aboriginal art using Western acrylics on canvas began as recently as 1971 in the remote township of Papunya, west of Alice Springs, when a teacher named Geoffrey Bardon gave some acrylics to men in the community to paint a mural on the school wall. This was how the Western Desert Art movement began. Since then dozens of art centres have developed in tiny communities from Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley to Maningreda and Ngukkur in Arnhem Land. Each has art advisers who bring in canvases and paints and get the artworks to major urban markets. While the materials may be Western and while the colourful imagery may seem like versions of Abstract Expressionism, the most of these works evoke traditional dreaming stories or kinship with the land and its bush foods. Visit the Art Gallery of New South Wales to see its extensive indigenous collections in order to educate yourself about the rich diversity of artistic styles throughout the country as well as seeing contemporary urban works. Many young urban artists are interpreting their cultural stories in new and interesting ways. As with any art form, there are authentic works and cheap imitations. It gets more complicated when you learn that most Indigenous works are not signed. You can, however, be assured that works are authentic if you buy from members of the Aboriginal Art Association of Australia, the Australian Commercial Galleries Association and the Indigenous Art Code. Those are the official names of the bluechip industry bodies that will provide the correct authentication and pay artists fair commissions. Professional art galleries specialising in Aboriginal art have knowledgeable and experienced staff who can provide excellent advice as well as introducing you to both

established and up-and-coming artists who work in the styles that most interest you. There are also three major Indigenous art events each year: The Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards exhibition at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory from August through October in Darwin, The Desert Mob event held at the Araluen Arts Centre in Alice Springs in September and the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair held in July. Remember to consider a wide range of artistic endeavours. If you are looking for an investment piece, large scale acrylic paintings tend to appreciate the most but you could also search out more affordable limited edition prints by established artists. There are also many other media to discover such as bark paintings, poles, weavings and screen-printed fabrics. All offer a powerful connection to Australia and its enduring Aboriginal culture. Remember you don’t have to spend a fortune to take an authentic piece of Australia home with you.

national gemstone. Australia produces a large percentage of the world’s finest quality opal, recognised throughout the major gem centres of the world as a rare and precious gemstone. This is why so many overseas visitors purchase their opal when they visit Australia. The history of opal goes back to the 1st Century AD when Pliny wrote of opal as the ‘Queen of Gems’. In Roman times it was included in the crown of the Holy Roman Emperor. Rumour has it that the Roman senator, Nonius, preferred exile rather than sell his valuable opal to Mark Anthony for presentation to Cleopatra.
WHERE ARE OPALS MINED IN AUSTRALIA? The three main areas are: NEW SOUTH WALES: Lightning Ridge This is the home of the rare and famous black opal, which derives its name from the body colour of the ‘nobbies’ or nodules. Black opals were first discovered at Lightning Ridge in 1903. Today, top quality black stones are generally the most valuable of all opal varieties. The rarest and most valuable colour combination is red on a black base, but deep greens, oranges, golds and electric blues are very sought after. They are very rare, beautiful and unique.

SHOPPING AUSTRALIAN OPALS
WESTERN QUEENSLAND: Quilpie, Yowah, Winton, Jundah This is the home of the beautiful Queensland boulder opal. The opal from this area differs from other deposits as, in the main, the precious is found in ironstone and sandstone ‘boulders’ which are millions of years old. Due to the harsh climate and terrain, and even with advanced mining techniques, production is limited and demand is high. SOUTH AUSTRALIA: Coober Pedy, Andamooka, Mintabie These fields produce the greatest quantity of a wide range of opal from the ‘white’ (milk opals) to the ‘translucent’ crystal opals, and have also produced a range from ‘grey base’. Opal was first found in the Coober Pedy area in 1915 but it was not until 1925 that the mining area was christened Coober Pedy, which is the local Aboriginal meaning ‘white man in a hole’ and that is exactly what the intrepid early miners did, and still do today—dig holes in the earth looking for that most wondrous of gems, the Australian opal. WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING AN OPAL The factors that determine the value of opal, are the brilliance of the colours, the darkness of the background body tone, the pattern of the colours, the shape of the stone and the inclusions in the face of the stone. When choosing your personal favourite, select a shape and colour combination that appeals to you. There are numerous colour combinations from which to choose from and a myriad of shapes. It is this wide variety of spectral colour that makes every opal unique, no two opals are the same. Let your heart choose your unique Australian opal as a special memory of your trip to Australia.

Australia has some of the world’s most talented designers and jewellers. Some people prefer to purchase an unset opal to take back to their local experienced craftsperson, while others prefer to purchase a stunning piece of opal jewellery in gold or silver and wear it home. When you purchase a unique piece of opal jewellery, you know exactly what the finished piece looks like. On the other hand, if you select a beautiful unset Australian opal you have the pleasure of contributing to its finished design and seeing its completion as your unique piece of jewellery. HOW DO I KNOW WHERE BEST TO SHOP FOR OPALS? If you are leaving Australia within 60 days of purchasing an Australian opal, you may be entitled to a local goods and services tax discount of 10%. Shop around before you purchase. Australian opals are rare and valuable. Be wary of stores that offer large discounts as an enticement to buy. To shop with confidence, it is highly recommended that you purchase from a long established and reputable store, which is a member of the Jewellers Association of Australia (JAA). These stores are bound by a code of ethics for your protection. Remember that Australia produces a large percentage of the world’s supply of precious opal. Very few overseas visitors have seen the true beauty of opal until they visit Australia. Written by Ken Anania. Opal Sector Chairman of the Jewellers Association of Australia 2016.

SYDNEY’S ICONIC HARBOUR has pretty much seen it all since then Lieutenant James Cook arrived aboard the Endeavour in 1770 and named it Port Jackson. It was here that the first settlers set up camp in 1788 and the harbour has been an important part of city life ever since, used for transportation and recreation. Little wonder it is widely regarded as the greatest leisure harbour in the world. On any given day, the harbour is alive with boats of all shapes and sizes, be it passenger ferries, state-of-the-art yachts or kayakers. This is particularly true during the traditional Boxing Day launch of the Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race, when hundreds of craft follow the racers out of the harbour. And on New Year’s Eve, there’s no better spot to be 32 WHERE SYDNEY I JULY 2017 I wheretraveler.com
than on a boat beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge as the breathtaking fireworks display takes place in the skies above. While the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House are its two most famous landmarks, the harbour has plenty more sights up its sleeve. Circular Quay, Luna Park and Anzac Bridge are all accessible and visible from the water along with hundreds of bays, coves, beaches and waterways. Several islands can also be found in the harbour, the most notable being Fort Denison, Shark Island and Cockatoo Island. Historians will no doubt want to head round to Green Point in Watsons Bay where the remains of fortifications designed to

THE ROCKS IS SYDNEY’S historic old
town quarter, where colonial and maritime history is preserved in every piece of hand-hewn sandstone, in the charming cobblestone streets and quaint heritage architecture. It’s where Sydney first began with the establishment of the English colony in 1788. Since then it has been home to sailors, whalers and traders. Its colourful history was saved by a union-led protest in the 1970s which preserved this unique part of Sydney for present and future generations to explore and enjoy. Today, The Rocks is a unique destination offering early colonial
architecture, historic pubs, archaeological dig sites, modern restaurants, fabulous accommodation, unique shopping, galleries and museums, markets, live entertainment, leafy parks and spectacular views of Sydney Harbour. Take time to discover the stories behind every street corner and experience a precinct steeped in rich layers of history. To find it, take a 10-minute stroll down George Street (Sydney city’s main street) towards the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge—you can’t miss it. More substantial dishes include a twice-baked goats cheese soufflé with rosemary; pot roast lamb shoulder, bergamot pears and tapenade; whole flathead fired on a terracotta tile with lardo and romesco. For after, expect rice pudding with jam, or wood-fired quince with saffron custard and pistachio brittle.
Indulge in prized Australian truffles with a range of seasonal specials at The Star Sydney’s signature restaurants Sokyo, Balla and BLACK Bar & Grill, or treat yourself with a truffle pizza at Pizzaperta. Commonly known as the ‘black diamond of the kitchen’, fresh black truffles have an aromatic earthy scent and unique rich flavour. The premium seasonal harvest was sourced from the rich, cool soils of the Manjimup region in Western Australia as well as the central tablelands and Canberra regions of New South Wales to create a range of special dishes. Les Clefs d’Or and fellow concierge enjoy a dessert degustation at 12-Micron in Barangaroo.
IT MIGHT BE COLD and winter in Sydney, but there are still many different experiences to enjoy our beautiful city. From small cafés and boutique coffee to hidden bars for that special warming cocktail, there are some truly unique experiences that can be hard to find without the help of a local. For your own experiences, make sure that you reach out to your hotel concierge for their own insider tips and information—you can tell that they’re a member of Les Clefs d’Or by the golden keys on their lapels.
n Sometimes for our members however, it’s not always about just recommending restaurants and attractions. A perfect example of the amazing reach of Les Clefs d’Or was highlighted recently by one of our members, who was contacted by a friend who had found a wallet clearly belonging to a tourist visiting our beautiful city. Following a simple email sent to all our members and fellow concierge the finder was able to locate the guest and have the wallet on the way to their hotel within a matter of minutes. This simple contact allowed the traveller to continue their holiday without having the stress of having lost credit cards and identification. n Les Clefs d’Or Australia is a friendly society of hotel concierge, and is a chapter of the international Union Internationale des Concierges d’Hotels. Each and every member of Les Clefs d’Or strives to provide the utmost in caring, attentive service to their hotel guests, and our society motto, ‘In Service through Friendship’, reflects the manner in which this is achieved.
