PILOT FOR A DAY
You are the Captain with Flight Experience Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be the pilot of a commercial jet? At Flight Experience at Harbourside Shopping Centre in Darling Harbour you can be a pilot for the day! You get to be the Captain of the flight on a state-of-the-art Boeing 737-800 flight simulator. Your instructor (aka your Co-Captain) will be along for the ride too, to show you the ropes and lend a hand, but you will be the one flying a commercial jet. Choose from a 30-, 60- or 90-minute experience, which includes a pre-flight briefing, explanation of all the controls, taking-off, flying and landing in the simulator—you can even choose which airports you want to fly into from over 24,000 airports. Flight Experience simulators are CASA approved—pilots use them for training—which means this is about as close as you can get to actually flying a plane. Exclusive to Sydney as part of the Sydney International Art Series, “Pipilotti Rist: Sip My Ocean” features the Swiss artist’s kaleidoscopic projections, ground-breaking video art and dazzling immersive environments from the 1980s to present day. Rist was among the first generations of artists who grew up with a television in her lounge room and Rist’s singlechannel video works—that have achieved her international acclaim—reveal her as an innovator in her practice. Her work explores the relationship between nature, technology and the body. Curated by MCA Senior Curator Natasha Bullock, Pipilotti Rist’s work is an ‘ode to the heart and the intellect, to the big emotions that sustain us and the beauty of the world around us.’ Don’t miss the MCA’s summer pop-up bar Colour Fields on the ground floor of the MCA. Decked out in colourful hues inspired by the exhibition and surrounded
by sweeping views of Circular Quay, it’s the ultimate spot for a cocktail, bite to eat or a perfect Instagram moment. Keep your Sunday evenings free if you’d like to groove to great music—because local legends Future Classic will play DJ sets as the sun sets. Bring the kids to Sundays with Pipilotti, a free event for grown-ups and kids to get creative. Open every Sunday from 1 November to 18 February, the drop-in program features art-making activities— experimenting with mirrored lights and projections—inspired by the artist.

BEST BURGERS Grill’d.
Best
Burgers in Sydney
WHERE TO FIND THE BEST burgers in Sydney is a topic of hot debate. Try these nine local favourites: from Americanstyle and Aussie through-and-through, to options for vegans and paleos, there is literally a burger for everyone.
Chur Burger A wander through the back streets of Surry Hills will bring you to Chur Burger, created by award-winning chef Warren Turnbull. Add some spice to your day with “Chur’s Mac Daddy”: grilled beef, a mac and cheese patty, hot smoky BBQ sauce, jalapeño mayo and fresh jalapeño. Vegetarians will love the “Veg”, which has a spiced chickpea fritter, grated beetroot and honey labne, and you absolutely must add on a Milo shake and a serve of sweet potato fries. 48 Albion Street, Surry Hills. 9212 3602. churburger.com.au
We hope you are hungry because Christine Knight has been on a mission to uncover Sydney’s must-try burgers.
Grill’d This chain sells fresh, healthy burgers with ethical, locally-farmed produce. They also cater for people whose diet is low sugar, vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, low carb or paleo, and have a strong focus on giving back with their program to support local communities. On a no-carb diet? Order your burger in a salad bowl instead of on a bun. The Galeries, Level 1, 500 George Street, Sydney; Level 2, Harbourside Shopping Centre, Darling Harbour and various locations around Sydney. grilld.com.au
American cheese, the beef is high quality, sourced from O’Conner grass-fed cattle raised in Gippsland, Victoria. The burgers are simple, with the focus on delicious ingredients rather than creative combinations. 6 Mary Street, Newtown. 4995 9550. facebook.com/MarysNewtown

Not only does it have a huge array of opals and jewellery for sale, but it also shows how opals came to be formed over millions of years and how they are mined today. Burger Project Neil Perry’s famous Rockpool burger now has its own venue at Burger Project. The burger is now sold at a lower price thanks to a few ingredient changes, but you’ll still find fine-dining-style toppings such as rose mayonnaise and crumbed confit mushroom. Order a classic ice cream sundae for dessert, or try a housemade soda. The crunchy thrice-cooked chips are also a fan favourite. Muriel’s Wedding: The Musical
Sydney Theatre Company and Global Creatures present the world premiere of “Muriel’s Wedding: The Musical”, exclusive to Sydney. PJ Hogan, who wrote the original hit film, has updated his masterpiece into a dazzling musical show. Follow Muriel, a dissatisfied woman stuck in a dead-end life, as she dreams of her perfect wedding. She’s got everything planned out—her dress, the church—all that’s missing is the groom. When she chases her dream to Sydney, Muriel winds up with everything she hoped for: a man, money and social media fame … but then things start going wrong. With original music and lyrics by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall alongside beloved ABBA tracks, and stunning costumes from designer Gabriela Tylesova, “Muriel’s Wedding: The Musical” is a theatrical delight for the eyes and ears. It stars Maggie McKenna as Muriel and Madeleine Jones as Muriel’s “fierce, fearless and fun” best friend Rhonda.

‘HIGH FIDELITY’ ROCKS SYDNEY Based on Nick Hornby’s novel and the 2000 Touchstone Pictures film, “High Fidelity” is a tale of love, life and music. Meet Rob Gordon: arrogant, pretentious, full of self-loathing … and dumped. When a man-child music snob with a superiority complex, a collection of rare vinyls called “the mother lode” and a failing business he calls “the last real record store on earth” loses his girlfriend, he must grow up and change before it’s too late. Neil Gooding Productions and Highway Run Productions bring the production to life at the Hayes Theatre Company, with an original score and music by Pulitzer Prize Winner Tom Kitt, and featuring the styles and sounds of some of the greatest artists ever recorded on vinyl, including Bruce Springsteen, U2, the Beatles and Aretha Franklin. “Kinky Boots” sensation Tony Francis stars as Rob Gordon.

By the time she was 20 she was writing number ones for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll, including The Drifters, The Shirelles and Aretha Franklin. But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her own voice and step into the spotlight, with music that would become the soundtrack of a generation. SHOPPING PINK DIAMONDS
An Enduring ACROSS THE BREADTH of 1.6 billion years, journeying from the crucible of the earth, emerges the most intriguing diamond in history. Revered for its exquisite beauty and provenance, the Argyle pink diamond is coveted as the most esteemed diamond in the world. While natural fancy coloured diamonds are scarce, Argyle pink diamonds are inherently so. So rare are they that less than an entire year’s worth of supply over half a carat would fit in the palm of one’s hand, while the number of red, blue and violet diamonds can be counted on one hand alone. The finest of each year’s discoveries, just 50-60 of these rare natural treasures are brought to life as polished masterpieces and offered for sale each year as part of the annual Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender, this year closing on 11 October. Rio Tinto’s Argyle Diamond Mine is the world’s only consistent source of pink diamonds, accounting for more than 90 percent of the world’s pink diamond supply; although this treasure trove will not continue in perpetuity. Argyle pink diamonds are increasingly sought-after—acquired by collectors and connoisseurs around the world for their personal holdings and bespoke jewellery creations. Prior to the 1980s, production of pink diamonds had been sporadic. Argyle pink diamonds, from a certifiable source and of a depth and range of colour never seen before, have commanded the world’s attention since their discovery in 1979. Unearthing these treasures, formed at a depth of over 160 kilometres below the earth’s surface, is a challenge both in size and complexity. It will take many careful hands for a rough Argyle pink diamond to journey from the mine to its final destination as a polished gem.
Calleija ‘L’Amour Rose’: From deep within the Argyle Diamond Mine, a rarity of nature is unveiled. Radiating light and unrivalled beauty, this intricate bloom of bejeweled artistry is the custodian of a spectacular 1.08ct Argyle Pink Tender Diamond.
“Intriguing”
For further information on Argyle Pink Diamonds refer to argylepinkdiamonds.com @argylepinkdiamonds_official
Of all diamond colours, pink is the most intriguing. Unlike other coloured diamonds, the phenomena of pink diamonds remains in part a mystery. It is thought that the pink colour is created by a twist within the atomic lattice during formation, the result of immense heat and pressure beneath the earth’s surface—a fabulous fluke of nature. The finest and rarest diamonds are reserved for the annual Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender, which is widely referred to as the most exclusive diamond sale in the world. The event highlights a small number of important diamonds from the Argyle mine that stand apart from their peers in terms of vibrancy and intensity of colour. The 50 to 60 of the most extraordinarily rare pink, red and violet diamonds that are offered as part of the Tender represent less than 0.1 percent of diamonds ever unearthed from the Argyle Diamond Mine.

the making of artworks is all about sharing a spiritual association with a specific landscape or ‘country’, as well as communicating obligations to this ‘country’ through Dreaming stories and Songlines. The Dreamtime describes the time of creation when enormous mythic creatures roamed the Earth creating landforms and deciding which people could live in each special place. The stories are told via many different media. Traditionally, there was rock art, sand and body paintings as well as ochre bark paintings, wood carvings and fibre weaving, the latter portable art still available today. Contemporary Aboriginal art using Western acrylics on canvas began as recently as 1971 in the remote township of Papunya, west of Alice Springs, when a teacher named Geoffrey Bardon gave Kurun Warun, “Dry Riverbed”, acrylic on linen, 90 x 120 cm, from Aboriginal Art Galleries. some acrylics to men in the community to paint a mural on the school wall. ABORIGINAL ART SHOPPING
Visit the Art Gallery of New South Wales to see its extensive Indigenous collections, in order to educate yourself about the rich diversity of artistic styles throughout the country as well as seeing contemporary urban works. Many young urban artists are interpreting their cultural stories in new and interesting ways. As with any art form, there are authentic works and cheap imitations. It gets more complicated when you learn that most Indigenous works are not signed. You can, however, be assured that works are authentic if you buy from members of the Aboriginal Art Association of Australia, the Australian Commercial Galleries Association and the Indigenous Art Code. Those are the official names of the blue-chip industry bodies that will provide the correct authentication and pay artists fair commissions. Professional art galleries specialising in Aboriginal art have knowledgeable and experienced staff who can provide excellent advice, as well as introducing you to both established and up-andcoming artists who work in the styles that most interest you. There are also three major Indigenous art events each year: The Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards exhibition at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory from August through November in Darwin, The Desert Mob event held at the Araluen Arts Centre in Alice Springs in September and the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair held in July. Remember to consider a wide range of artistic endeavours. If you are looking for an investment piece, large scale acrylic paintings tend to appreciate the most but you could also search out more affordable limited edition prints by established artists. There are also many other media to discover such as bark paintings, poles, weavings and screen-printed fabrics. All offer a powerful connection to Australia and its enduring Aboriginal culture. Remember, you don’t have to spend a fortune to take an authentic piece of Australia home with you.

national gemstone. Australia produces a large percentage of the world’s finest quality opal, recognised throughout the major gem centres of the world as a rare and precious gemstone. This is why so many overseas visitors purchase their opal when they visit Australia. The history of opal goes back to the 1st Century AD when Pliny wrote of opal as the ‘Queen of Gems’. In Roman times it was included in the crown of the Holy Roman Emperor. Rumour has it that the Roman senator, Nonius, preferred exile rather than sell his valuable opal to Mark Anthony for presentation to Cleopatra.
WHERE ARE OPALS MINED IN AUSTRALIA? The three main areas are: NEW SOUTH WALES: Lightning Ridge This is the home of the rare and famous black opal, which derives its name from the body colour of the ‘nobbies’ or nodules. Black opals were first discovered at Lightning Ridge in 1903. Today, top quality black stones are generally the most valuable of all opal varieties. The rarest and most valuable colour combination is red on a black base, but deep greens, oranges, golds and electric blues are very sought after. They are very rare, beautiful and unique.

WESTERN QUEENSLAND: Quilpie, Yowah, Winton, Jundah This is the home of the beautiful Queensland boulder opal. The opal from this area differs from other deposits as, in the main, the precious is found in ironstone and sandstone ‘boulders’ which are millions of years old. Due to the harsh climate and terrain, and even with advanced mining techniques, production is limited and demand is high.
Opal and diamond earrings from Giulians.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA: Coober Pedy, Andamooka, Mintabie These fields produce the greatest quantity of a wide range of opal from the ‘white’ (milk opals) to the ‘translucent’ crystal opals, and have also produced a range from ‘grey base’. Opal was first found in the Coober Pedy area in 1915 but it was not until 1925 that the mining area was christened Coober Pedy, which is the local Aboriginal meaning ‘white man in a hole’ and that is exactly what the intrepid early miners did, and still do today—dig holes in the earth looking for that most wondrous of gems, the Australian opal. WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING AN OPAL The factors that determine the value of opal, are the brilliance of the colours, the darkness of the background body tone, the pattern of the colours, the shape of the stone and the inclusions in the face of the stone. When choosing your personal favourite, select a shape and colour combination that appeals to you. There are numerous colour combinations from which to choose from and a myriad of shapes. It is this wide variety of spectral colour that makes every opal unique, no two opals are the same. Let your heart choose your unique Australian opal as a special memory of your trip to Australia.

Australia has some of the world’s most talented designers and jewellers. Some people prefer to purchase an unset opal to take back to their local experienced craftsperson, while others prefer to purchase a stunning piece of opal jewellery in gold or silver and wear it home. When you purchase a unique piece of opal jewellery, you know exactly what the finished piece looks like. On the other hand, if you select a beautiful unset Australian opal you have the pleasure of contributing to its finished design and seeing its completion as your unique piece of jewellery. HOW DO I KNOW WHERE BEST TO SHOP FOR OPALS? If you are leaving Australia within 60 days of purchasing an Australian opal, you may be entitled to a local goods and services tax discount of 10%. Shop around before you purchase. Australian opals are rare and valuable. Be wary of stores that offer large discounts as an enticement to buy. To shop with confidence, it is highly recommended that you purchase from a long established and reputable store, which is a member of the Jewellers Association of Australia (JAA). These stores are bound by a code of ethics for your protection. Remember that Australia produces a large percentage of the world’s supply of precious opal. Very few overseas visitors have seen the true beauty of opal until they visit Australia. Written by Ken Anania. Opal Sector Chairman of the Jewellers Association of Australia 2016.

Harbour Town
Humpback whales, spectacular fireworks, midget submarines, an internationally renowned yacht race and a world famous opera house.
SYDNEY’S ICONIC HARBOUR has pretty much seen it all since then Lieutenant James Cook arrived aboard the Endeavour in 1770 and named it Port Jackson. It was here that the first settlers set up camp in 1788 and the harbour has been an important part of city life ever since, used for transportation and recreation. Little wonder it is widely regarded as the greatest leisure harbour in the world. On any given day, the harbour is alive with boats of all shapes and sizes, be it
passenger ferries, state-of-the-art yachts or kayakers. This is particularly true during the traditional Boxing Day launch of the Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race, when hundreds of craft follow the racers out of the harbour. And on New Year’s Eve, there’s no better spot to be than on a boat beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge as the breathtaking fireworks display takes place in the skies above. While the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House are its two most famous landmarks, the harbour has plenty more
sights up its sleeve. Circular Quay, Luna Park and Anzac Bridge are all accessible and visible from the water along with hundreds of bays, coves, beaches and waterways. Several islands can also be found in the harbour, the most notable being Fort Denison, Shark Island and Cockatoo Island. Historians will no doubt want to head round to Green Point in Watsons Bay where the remains of fortifications designed to protect the harbour from a

BLUE MOUNTAINS AND BEYOND Mayfield’s Water Garden.
Beyond the BLUE Looking for that perfect escape from the city, but only have a few days to spare? Leave the crowds behind and head to the Blue Mountains and beyond, to discover a spectacular garden like no other. By Roshan Sukhla. THERE’S NOTHING BETTER than getting away from it all and taking a break from the hustle and bustle of life and work. So grab some friends or the family, hit the road and head west to the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains. Make your first stop the lovely town of Leura. When we visit it’s spring and they are in the midst of their Gardens Festival. Cherry blossom trees line Leura Mall in a flourish of white and pink flowers. Leura Garage is the must-try spot for lunch. As the name suggests, this popular spot was once a mechanic’s garage but has been converted rather cleverly by owner James Howarth. Solar panels have been installed, recycled materials have been used, car hoists have been converted to wine and drink racks and rainwater filtration systems
have been added underneath the building, so you are drinking fresh water that Leura Garage have filtered themselves. The menu is a mix of share dishes and mains. The roasted pumpkin with tahini dressing, crispy kale and roasted pepitas was incredible, as were the pork meatballs with smoked turnip, parsnip puree and crispy beetroot chips. From here, we head to our accommodation for the night, to let the relaxing begin! Lavender Majestic is a magnificent property in Katoomba, which can be hired out by groups and friends, perfect for special occasions and hens weekends. The three-bedroom house (which can sleep up to 10 people) was originally built in 1890, with a few upgrades over
the years. Owner Nicky Vaux has created a marvellous space that welcomes and soothes you as soon as you walk in. A butler is included in your stay so all you have to do is sit back, relax and take it all in, as they bring you your champagne, refill snacks and anything else you may require. Relaxation certainly is the name of the game at Lavender Majestic because each person gets a massage included in their stay here. For dinner, we head to Blackheath and the newly opened Cinnabar Kitchen, by Corinne Evatt and Mary-Jane Craig, the team behind the award-winning Ashcrofts restaurant. The menu is a new take on modern international cuisine, with dishes designed to share. Begin with the flat bread and tahini hummus,

pimiento and wild olives. The wild scallop tartare with wakame and pickled ginger was a delicate flavoursome surprise balanced with a kick from the ginger. Cinnabar Kitchen is quickly becoming a local favourite, from a renowned team, and locals are happy to have such highclass fare back in the area. After our very relaxing breakfast in the grand dining room of Lavender Majestic, we leave Katoomba to drive over the mountains to Oberon. Just past the main town centre, you’ll find the turnoff for Mayfield Garden. This privately-owned estate, which belongs to the Hawkins family, is a magnificent cool climate garden, inspired by the gardens of Europe. Before exploring the grounds, we head to the on-site café for sustenance. The café has a garden-to-plate philosophy with 80% of the produce sourced from the gardens itself, and Mayfield’s own farm, with the rest coming from local suppliers. A breakfast and lunch menu is available as well as options for the kids. I chose the Mayfield Vegan salad, which was a fusion of freshness and colour featuring ingredients from their kitchen garden. The 15 hectares of Mayfield Garden are open to the public 363 days a year. Wander through the Water Garden along the boardwalks, then view the marvellous Obelisk and pond. Don’t miss the cascading waterfalls, walk over the beautiful stone bridge and then explore around and through the Grotto. Follow the path to the Copper Tree Fountain, and the soon-to-be-opened Valley of the Five Ponds. Wind your way back through the garden and have a game or two of chess or croquet on the lawns.

Hillbilly Cider. Photo: Deep Hill Media.
Leura Garage.
No matter what time of year you visit here, there is always something to see with different plants in bloom. The spring sights of beautiful tulips, rhododendrons, azaleas and cherry blossoms were breathtaking. If you are feeling inspired, and I have no doubt you will be, you can take home and nurture your own plant from the Nursery near the entrance to the gardens. On our way home, we return via the Bells Line of Road, and take a break at the famous apple town of Bilpin for some cider tasting. We visit the Hillbilly Cider Shed which overlooks Shields Orchard, a working apple orchard. As a cider lover it is fascinating to meet with owner Shane McLaughlin and learn all about Hillbilly’s incredible 100 percent natural cider. Taste test all their varieties straight from the barrel. There’s Apple, Pear, Sweet Julie and Scrumpy, as well as a nonalcoholic cider and a vintage cider. As we drive back to the city, I reflect on this trip that has been a perfect, much-needed escape balancing fine food, relaxation and getting back to nature. Pure bliss!

Explore The Rocks THE ROCKS IS SYDNEY’S historic old
town quarter, where colonial and maritime history is preserved in every piece of hand-hewn sandstone, in the charming cobblestone streets and quaint heritage architecture. It’s where Sydney first began with the establishment of the English colony in 1788. Since then it has been home to sailors, whalers and traders. Its colourful history was saved by a union-led protest in the 1970s which preserved this unique part of Sydney
for present and future generations to explore and enjoy. Today, The Rocks is a unique destination offering early colonial architecture, historic pubs, archaeological dig sites, modern restaurants, fabulous accommodation, unique shopping, galleries and museums, markets, live entertainment, leafy parks and spectacular views of Sydney Harbour. PRECINCTS THE ROCKS
Another old Sydney favourite is The Australian Heritage Hotel on Cumberland Street. With a great big menu, full of some Aussie inspired pizzas, why not try the kangaroo pizza? Or are you game enough to test out the saltwater crocodile pizza? Make sure you pop by on a Wednesday night for trivia or try and win the Meat Tray Raffle on a Friday night for a bit of fun! Don’t forget The Rocks Foodies Market that takes place every Friday lunchtime. Stop for a delicious bite to eat and have a chat with the florist who has grown fresh flowers or the baker who has made fresh bread. There’s a fascinating mix of heritage attractions in The Rocks that bring Sydney’s history to life. Visit The Rocks Discovery Museum, a restored 1850s warehouse which is home to a unique collection of images and archaeological artefacts found in The Rocks dig sites. Just up the road at Susannah Place Museum, you get the very rare opportunity to reconstruct domestic working-class life within The Rocks neighbourhood between 1844 and 1989 and hear stories from former tenants. The museum’s re-created 1915 corner shop is popular with visitors of all ages, with jars of lollies, straw brooms and brown paper wrapping. If you’re looking for an entertaining way to experience the history of The Rocks, don’t miss the award-winning The Rocks Walking Tours. In the evening The Rocks Pub Walk will allow you to wind your way through the historic lanes as you visit three heritage-listed pubs, try a local brew, meet the locals and hear

the colourful stories and infamous characters associated with The Rocks. The tour departs at 6.30pm from outside Harts Pub. The Rocks is also the home of a number of galleries including Ken Done and the S.H. Ervin Gallery where you can view some beautiful Australian art. The S.H. Ervin Gallery is one of Sydney’s leading public art institutions housed in the historic National Trust Centre on Observatory Hill, The Rocks. The Gallery’s exhibition program is designed to explore the richness and diversity of Australian art, both historical and contemporary, and present it in new contexts. The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), at the harbour’s edge at Circular Quay, is dedicated to exhibiting, interpreting and collecting contemporary art from across Australia and around the world. The museum received a $AUD53 million renovation in 2012 and with a continually changing program of exhibitions there’s always something new, exciting and inspiring to see at the MCA. Enjoy panoramic city views at the Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon lookout. From The Rocks, take the Argyle Stairs then the Cumberland Street stairway to access the bridge pedestrian pathway. Climb 200 steps to the very top of the Pylon, where you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the city of Sydney. Find out how the Sydney Harbour Bridge was constructed and discover the stories behind the opening celebration as you wander up, through three levels of exhibits, to the open-air lookout. With so much to explore, The Rocks is a must-see destination on any trip to Sydney. For more information call into The Sydney Visitor Centre in The Rocks Centre, on the corner of Argyle and Playfair Streets. You’ll find friendly and knowledgeable experts on The Rocks as well as maps, brochures, tour booking facilities, gifts and mementos. ■

Modern Mexican Awaits at Méjico By Roshan Sukhla In the heart of Sydney’s busy CBD you’ll find a modern Mexican treasure— if you know where to look. Méjico, on Pitt Street, is a funky, contemporary Mexican restaurant that places a huge emphasis on fresh, mouthwatering ingredients. Most of the menu is tapas-style and designed to share, but there are larger mains available too. We started with the guacamole, and I can’t recommend it enough. Not only did it taste delicious with plantain chips, but your server makes it fresh right in front of you at the table. Watch as they smash the perfectly green avocado with Serrano chilli, Spanish onion, pistachios and coriander. The grilled ocean trout tacos were simply melt-in-your-mouth delicious, served with pickled watermelon rind, blood orange salsa and thyme yogurt. The kingfish ceviche was a feast for the eyes—and the tastebuds—as it was rather uniquely served on dehydrated orange tostadas with a grapefruit, orange and habanero granita. The freshness of the kingfish worked well with the zesty kick of the granita. The corn lollipops are a Méjico favourite and it’s easy to see why! The potatas bravas—crispy smashed potatoes with paprika and chipotle aioli—were a highlight, and we paired these with the Achiote chicken, which was served on a salsa of quinoa and spiced almonds. Food intolerances are well catered for here—I was certainly looked after as I have a lactose intolerance—with plenty of gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian options on the menu. The friendly staff were always on hand to help with ever-important menu decisions (“How many tacos are too many tacos for two people?”). For drinks, there’s a huge range of tequila to choose from, as well as cocktails, sangria and wine. Look out for the ever-changing monthly specials. When we visited we tried the Paloma cocktail—a refreshing grapefruit concoction with soda water and a shot of tequila with a salt trim. If you still have room (sadly, we didn’t), sweets include churros, a margarita cheesecake, and an ice cream sandwich. Next time, I’ll be saving room for dessert!

LES CLEFS D’OR
LES CLEFS D’OR BY MARK ANDERSON, STATE DIRECTOR FOR NSW

The Sydney Concierge Hospitality Ball on Sunday 15 October at the Hilton Sydney.
AS THE WEATHER HEATS UP, Sydney is presenting some fabulous options for exploring our beautiful harbourside city. Make sure that you see your hotel concierge to unlock some of these experiences, whether it be a ferry trip to Manly or access to one of the harbour islands or beaches. There are many great ways to find your own part of what we definitely think is the most beautiful city harbour in the world.
n In the middle of October, Sydney members were joined by fellow concierge
and industry representatives for the annual Sydney Concierge Hospitality Ball. Loved by all who attend, the Ball also attracted the attendance of several of our concierge friends from Melbourne and even New Zealand. A great night was had by all who enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of the Hilton Sydney, whilst also raising over $10,000 for St. Anthony’s Family Care, our nominated charity.
n Les Clefs d’Or Australia is a friendly society of hotel concierge. Our aim as an organisation is to promote tourism throughout Australia. Each and every member of Les Clefs d’Or strives to provide the utmost in caring, attentive service to their hotel guests, and our Society motto ‘In Service through Friendship’ reflects the manner in which this is achieved. We also continue to strive for growth throughout Sydney and have recently held a workshop that several prospective members have attended in order to further develop their knowledge.
