WINE COUNTRY NOW

Perfect Marks

MEET TWO NAPA VALLEY WINEMAKERS WHO CRAFTED PERFECT 100-POINT WINES. By Laurie Jo Miller Farr

In the world of fine wine, perfect marks are awarded only occasionally. And if grapevines could talk, they would say that Mother Nature is unpredictable, uncontrollable and sometimes unforgiving. When all the seasonal variables are just right, very special bottles of wine may attain a full 100 points, but even the most spectacular harvest requires the instinct and meticulous direction of a highly skilled winemaker. Odette Estate is on the Silverado Trail, a scenic stretch running through Napa Valley’s historic Stags’ Leap District. Head Winemaker Jeff Owens looks after 45 acres of organically farmed vineyards. His inaugural vintage, 2012 Odette Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, attracted international attention, earning a perfect 100 from acclaimed wine critic Robert Parker. In "The Wine Advocate" he described the wine as "off-the-charts, mind-blowing...everything is beautifully married in one harmonious, glorious wine." “We’re so grateful and proud,” Owens said, about being the world’s only winemaker to achieve top marks on a first

release. “Never in my wildest dreams did I expect this.” Tastings available by reservation; of note is the Cabernet Tasting experience, which allows you to taste Odette Estate's most coveted Cabernet Sauvignons. 5998 Silverado Trail, Napa Valley, 707.224.7533, odetteestate.com Just two miles north, at the sustainably farmed and Napa Green-certified Poetry Vineyard, part of Cliff Lede Vineyards, the grapes benefit from gravelly volcanic soil, warm sunshine and evening marine air. During harvest, the fruit is hand-picked at night and delivered while cool, undergoing a rigorous three-tiered sorting process. Winemaker Christopher Tynan is no stranger to 100-point wines, having produced several. The 2013 Cliff Lede Vineyards Poetry Cabernet Sauvignon is one. “I am very humbled by the honor and appreciate the recognition of Poetry Vineyards and all of our hard work. Our team is very passionate about growing the best fruit possible, making wines that we enjoy drinking and feel are the best expression of the site,” said Tynan. Visit the craftsman-style Tasting Bar to try current releases from both Cliff Lede Vineyards and FEL Wines daily from 10 am-4 pm; parties of 6-7 require a reservation.1473 Yountville Cross Road, Yountville, 707.944.8642, cliffledevineyards.com

SINCE THE “Judgment of Paris” in 1976, where California wines won in blind tastings carried out by French judges, most visitors to San Francisco seek local wine experiences in Northern California Wine Country. Here are our favorite wineries that go beyond traditional wine tastings, and offer gourmet restaurants, stellar spas, posh hotel stays and even outdoor opera performances.

LAS ALCOBAS HOTEL—ST. HELENA, NAPA VALLEY Las Alcobas, a Luxury Collection Hotel (1915 Main St., 707.963.7000) is a secluded oasis that combines all pleasures of wine country living. This adults-only resort pampers its guests with excellent service, understated elegance and plush comfort. Relax in a heated swimming pool surrounded by rose bushes, or on your hotel balcony with a rocking chair and fire pit as you enjoy views of the vineyards framed by the mountains. There are two features of Las Alcobas that don’t require an overnight stay and that any visitor can enjoy: Acacia House restaurant and Atrio Spa. Acacia House, from beloved celebrity chef Chris Cosentino, is located in a 1907 Georgian-style farmhouse and serves up California cuisine and farm-to-table dishes. The food is inspired by the seasonal bounty of the region as well as the culinary influences of France, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Germany— all wine-producing countries whose grapes were once transplanted into the fertile Napa Valley soil. Splurge on Chips & Dip: house potato chips, whipped lebneh and salmon or sturgeon caviar, or enjoy Shaved Vegetable Salad with black truffle vinaigrette and Foie Gras Pear Charlotte sprinkled with vanilla salt. MY WINE COUNTRY Where the locals sip and savor

 As visitors gear up for spring in Wine Country, we turn to Estate Chef at St. Supéry Chef Tod Kawachi for advice. He perfected his craft at Maui resorts and was featured on the Discovery Channel’s Great Chefs series before returning to Napa as an executive chef and an instructor at the Culinary Institute of America in Greystone. For more great Wine Country advice visit wheretraveler.com

Springtime is my favorite Napa season because of the perfect weather, but mostly it's my favorite for all the great fresh produce that is available to cook with. It’s an exciting lead into the winery harvest season as well. How should one prepare for hitting the wineries in Napa or Sonoma?

Grab a great hearty breakfast. I recommend Southside in Yountville at the Stewart Cellars building. They will also be opening one in South Napa soon at the Century Center. Bouchon Bakery in

Yountville is great for pastries on the go and ABC Bakery in Napa also has a fantastic breakfast. Is there a good book you would recommend for a budding wine enthusiast?

Definitely, “Wine Folly: The Essential Guide to Wine” by Justin Hammack and Madeline Puckette. It’s a wellillustrated book with its own serious Instagram following. What wine do you always keep handy in your home?

A sparkling wine (usually a Champagne), a bottle of Pinot Noir, and my go-to white is the award-winning St. Supéry Dollarhide

Estate Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc. For someone visiting N , what is unmissable?

The Veggies and Vino and MyVirtú interactive experiences at St. Supéry are not to be missed. Veggie’s and Vino showcases what’s seasonally available in our estate culinary garden. My Virtú is very hands-on and educational. You get to be the winemaker and make your own customized blend of white wine, bottled exclusively for you on the spot. Can you think of a better souvenir? —Stephan Rabimov
