in the world
At Summer's Peak Climb to the peak of a big-ol' Southern rock to see sweeping views of Atlanta and its surrounding cities. You heard us right: Stone Mountain is in fact the world's largest piece of exposed granite and one of the state's most popular visitor destinations. 80 MINUTES IN:
Stone Mountain Park
Known officially as a granite monadnock, or an isolated rock hill, Stone Mountain is almost two hours away from the North Georgia mountains, which makes its appearance on the horizon somewhat unusual. The granite dome and surrounding natural area are complemented by a family-friendly theme park, Stone Mountain Park, where you can take a Ride the Ducks tour and climb an intricate
ropes course, among many other activities. On short time, we recommend hiking the one-mile trail to the peak. Skip the hike by riding the Summit Skyride, a high-speed cable car, to the top. Once you reach the summit, you'll be taken aback by breathtaking views of Atlanta's glimmering skyline. In clear weather, you may even see the Appalachian Mountains to the north. www.stonemountainpark.com

Wealth of History Buckhead began long ago as a quiet, rural community, which changed rapidly after Lenox Square Mall opened in its center in 1959. The area’s first skyscraper was built in 1974, and now, Buckhead is home to nearly a third of Atlanta’s high-rise buildings. Today, the sprawling neighborhood encompasses some the city’s most lavish homes, an impressive diversity of retail options, and the city’s third-largest business district. This area also offers a couple riveting historical sites. The massive Governor’s Mansion offers public tours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The recently renovated Atlanta History Center is home to one of the largest Civil War exhibits in the U.S., a Centennial Olympic Games Museum and two historic homes, which transport visitors back in time to their respective eras. The 33-acre campus also offers acres of gardens and walking trails, and hosts family-friendly events throughout the year.

Not only are the eateries in this ‘hood widely diverse in cuisine, but they also range in price, ambiance and overall experience. Some of the city’s most celebrated restaurants are here. For instance, you’ll find gourmet fare at iconic steakhouse Bones, exceptionally fresh Restaurant Eugene and modern Aria. Or you could opt for authentic cuisine from around the world, particularly Moroccan cuisine (and belly dancing) at Imperial Fez, Mediterranean dishes (including Chef Karatassos’ famous octopus) at Kyma, Persian food at Sufi’s and Italian fare at La Grotta.
