HAMID ROUCHDI A u t h e nt i c Fr e n c h B a k i n g When he moved to the U.S. from the French Riviera in 1998, former engineer Hamid Rouchdi likely never thought he’d one day spearhead the most authentic French boulangerie et patisserie café in Metro Atlanta. In 2015, that’s just what Rouchdi did when he opened Café Vendôme in Sandy Springs. A seasoned entrepreneur, Rouchdi melds

his modern approach to business with award-winning cuisine that uses traditional techniques to bring delectable French pastries, breakfast, lunch and, soon, dinner to Atlanta. Check hours of operation on Facebook, Yelp and the website. 404.551.5163, cafevendome.com.

Essential Atlanta We officially move from spring to summer this month, although Hotlanta has been feeling, well, hot, for awhile now. Nevertheless, embrace the sunshine and turn your attention to Atlanta’s BeltLine, where you can get a bit of culture in 90 minutes—or a whole day! 90 MINUTES IN:

The BeltLine Once upon a time, a 22-mile railroad corridor encircling Atlanta fell victim to neglect. Today, this once-decaying ring of rails is the basis for one of the nation’s largest redevelopment projects and a wildly popular attraction for both Atlantans and those visiting the city. Five major hiking-biking-jogging trails and seven parks offer ample space for exercising any way you choose and for however long. As you move, catch sight of amazing works of public art that are always being refreshed, watch skateboarders turn flip tricks at the world-class Fourth Ward Skatepark, splash around in streams or manmade water sources, try your hand at discgolf on an 18-hole course, and encounter some kudzu-eating goats.

Byron Barkley

W Insider and W Atlanta-Midtown —KRISTINA DREW Q: Brunch is a Southern staple on the weekends; what are the best in Midtown? A: If it’s a Southern influence then I tell them South City Kitchen. If they are seafood lovers then I recommend Lure. If they are looking for healthier options I send them to Highland Bakery. If they are looking for something off the beaten path then Babs off of Sixth and Juniper. However, I'm most excited about the addition of Joy Cafe to the Midtown scene. Q: Some guests are looking for mature theatrical entertainment, where do you send them? A: The best thing about being in Midtown is that we are surrounded by the arts. If guests are looking for something a bit more mainstream then I send them to the Alliance Theatre at Woodruff Arts Center or the Fox Theatre. If they are more interested in the local or up-and-coming shows, I recommend the SCADshow or the Actor’s Express at the King Plow Arts Center.

Separating you from the herd

Q: If guests are looking for great cocktails where might you send them? A: I have created a Cinco de Mayo themed Midtown bar crawl. It’s something you could easily start during the day and have it go into the evening. Zocalo, Tin Lizzy’s Cantina, Escorpión, Senor Patron, Takorea, Prickly Pear Taqueria, Taco Mac, Rreal Tacos are all on the list. Buy a pitcher of margaritas and some tacos at each and see how far you can make it.

Hang With The “In” Crowd Twenty-first century architecture buffs can check off another Renzo Piano-designed art museum on the ‘ol bucket list with a visit the incredible High Museum of Art. But, what you see inside counts, too, and the High doesn’t disappoint with its June offerings. Visitors slurp up the tasty morsels of Campbell’s Soup courtesy of a Modern art master in “Andy Warhol: Prints From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation,” beginning June 3. And for of-the-moment fare, Spanish artist Jaime Hayon is the subject of two commissions: “Technicolor,” a vibrant installation that pairs hanging tapestries and glazed ceramic pieces, and “Merry Go Zoo,” a playful, kinetic sculpture garden. Both open June 24. 1280 Peachtree St. NE, 404.733.4400. Climate controlled gondolas protect passengers from the elements, whether skies

A Mountain of Fun Just outside Atlanta stands Georgia’s most popular attraction, Stone Mountain Park, where every year the Summer at the Rock series delivers family fun. Daytime activities run the gamut, with outdoor adventures like SkyHike (an obstacle course winding through the forest) or Geyser Towers (a jungle gym of rope bridges, tunnels and towers that get splashed by a gushing geyser). Lovely Escapes WATERFALL HIKES One of the most picturesque ways to enjoy Georgia’s natural beauty is a hike to one of the many waterfalls gracing the landscape. For those less keen on the exercise and more about the photo opp that awaits, short hikes are easy to come by—such as the half-mile trek to Minnehaha Falls in Clayton, where cascades tumble over multi-tiered rock formations. Serious hikers favor the 7-mile journey to Panther Creek Falls in Chattahoochee National Forest—well worth the rigorous hike thanks to the deep pool and sandy beach where you can cool off. Then there’s the mid-level Amicalola Falls Trail (near Ellijay) at 2 miles, which leads to Georgia’s tallest falls.

WINE COUNTRY The foothills of the North Georgia Mountains play host to the largest concentration of wineries in the state. Find varietals of the European, French and American persuasion thanks to the favorable growing conditions of the region, which foster many wine grapes. Sip at the Tuscan villa-esque Montaluce Winery & Estates, enjoy vintage Georgia-grown estate wine at Three Sisters Vineyards & Winery, or savor award-winning varietals Wolf Mountain Vineyards & Winery. At the center of it all, the town of Dahlonega boasts multiple tasting rooms downtown and offers many wine country tours. With so many bottles to uncork, it may take more than one outing to satisfy your inner vino. Luckily, many charming B&Bs scatter the landscape, such as the eco-friendly Cedar House Inn & Yurts or the luxurious Mountain Laurel Creek Inn & Spa 11

Atlanta Your Way

Tropical Indulgence

Aquatic Adventure

On the Green

Why have ice cream scooped onto a cone when you can savor rolls of the cold stuff? At (1) 8 Fahrenheit Ice Cream that’s exactly what you get, and it is just as tasty as the traditional, hard-packed pints. For those more inclined to cool down with a frozen pop, might we suggest the (2) King of Pops poptails at Ponce City Market, a quirky mash-up of favorite tropical treats and adult beverages. And, nothing says tropical oasis quite like fresh fruit. At (3) LottaFrutta, fruit cups inspired by Latin-style street food provide a kick of citrus that can make you feel like you’re in a tropical paradise. Smoothies and sandwiches make the menu, too. For complete escapism, the tiki-style club Flip Flops provides dancing, drinks and beach vibes.

At the center of Georgia’s largest lake (Lanier), The (1) LanierWorld waterpark features the Aquatic Adventure (the floating adventure course), lounge on Big Beach or race friends down the double-lane slides. (2) Shoot the Hooch is a relaxing favorite—grab a tube, canoe, kayak or paddle board and hit the Chattahoochee River. For more heart-pounding water ventures, make a trip to (3) Six Flags White Water. Adrenalin junkies will be pleased, especially with the park’s Wahoo Racer in its ranks (the world’s largest slide of its kind). Grown-ups, too, love aquatic activities, say, like the ones offered at the W Hotel Wetbar. The all-weather rooftop pool bar owns panoramic city views and serves up specialty cocktails.

(1) Bear’s Best is a high-end golf course nestled

40 W H E R E AT L A N TA I J U N E 2017

in the gated community of Edinburgh. The course is a culmination of the best designs selected from more that 200 courses worldwide and creates one incredible tee time. Any golf enthusiast knows that the best games happen when working with the best equipment. For top-notch irons, woods and wedges, shop (2) Mizuno at a number of Atlanta sporting goods shops. Those with deep appreciation for the game can stop at (3) Oakland Cemetery to see the final resting place of one of the greatest to grace the green: Bobby Jones, who won golf’s Grand Slam and who designed Augusta National Golf Club. Truly dedicated players should tee off at each of the 25 top resorts that comprise the Georgia Golf Trail.
