SummerSet continues at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre this month, with a jam packed family program. The new year sees the welcome return of the adventurous wildlife presenter Steve Backshall, with his brand new show “Steve Backshall’s Deadly 60 Pole to Pole”, from 4 to 5 January. Following his sold out 2016 Australian tour, Steve will take audiences aged 5-plus on a theatrical journey of wild discovery and dangerous entertainment. From 6 to 22 January, “The Snail and the Whale” is a critically acclaimed live musical stage adaptation of the modern classic picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Audiences aged 4-plus are invited to join a tiny snail on her trip around the world. Returning for three days only is everybody’s favourite Mister Maker live on stage. Lloyd Cole: ‘The Retrospective’ English singer-songwriter Lloyd Cole celebrates the release of his new anthology songbook, “The Retrospective”. Sugar Spin: you, me, art and everything The Queensland Gallery of Modern Art turns 10 this summer and to celebrate, the gallery has been transformed for a major exhibition, “Sugar Spin: you, me, art and everything”. The exhibition features more than 250 contemporary artworks exploring light, space, architecture and the senses. From brand-new immersive works to large-scale visitor favourites, the exhibition reflects our complex connections to the natural world with an explosion of colour, sensation and spinning delights. Lucent: Aboriginal and Pacific Works from the Collection “Lucent” draws together works from the Aboriginal and Pacific collections, illuminating connections and differences between the cultures. Evocations of light and its absence are explored through works ranging from installations of great majesty to intimate adornments for the body. Multiple feathered “Banumbirr” (Morning star) poles associated with creation stories engage with a 22-metre black “Ngatu Ta Uli” (barkcloth) used within mourning rituals, as do decorative and ceremonial pearlshell pendants from both cultures and textiles. BRISBANE GREETERS Visitors to Brisbane can get a more intimate feel for the city by joining in on one of the scheduled tours which depart from the Queen Street Mall seven days a week at 10am. WITH SUMMER IN full swing, the sun

shines on Brisbane all through January with weather that will make you search for a cool spot. Luckily there are plenty of places to beat the heat as the holidays extend into one long glorious adventure. Brisbane’s South Bank Parklands is always a great place to start but think beyond the white sand and cool stretches of a patrolled water at Streets Beach. Venture down to the river bank and explore the boardwalk. It will take you right around the river’s edge to Kangaroo Point or over to the bustling CBD centre via the Kurilpa or Goodwill Bridges. Head north along the river and you’ll find Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), which is still kicking its heels up after turning 10 in December. Check out the new bronze sculpture by Queensland Indigenous artist Judy Watson at the gallery’s entrance commissioned to celebrate the

milestone. Based on the woven fishing nets used by Indigenous people on the banks of the Brisbane River, the work directly references the land on which it sits, acknowledging the traditional owners of the site and the wider region. Other must-see artworks in GOMA’s major summer exhibition “Sugar Spin: you, me, art and everything” include “Nervescape V”, a large-scale, multicoloured landscape of synthetic hair by Icelandic-born, New York-based artist Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir and Carsten Höller’s “Left/Right Slide”. It will be hard to miss the huge presence of Ron Mueck’s oversized woman “In bed” and highly-popular interactive installation by Olafur Eliasson of thousands of white Lego pieces, known as “The cubic structural evolution project”. Other highlights include Kohei Nawa’s bubble encrusted “Pix-Cell Double Deer#4”, and Céleste BoursierMougenot’s musical installation of live finches, “from here to ear (v.13)”.

Also at GOMA visitors can step into leading British artist Anthony McCall’s “Crossing”, a major light installation with intersecting shafts of solid-light and be immersed in the light, haze and sound of breaking waves. Throughout summer GOMA’s Children’s Art Centre will present “Mirror Mirror”, a free, interactive project developed in collaboration with Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir, where visitors create their own unique paper hairstyle and style a wall of artificial hair-like material. There are sure to be some photo moments here. The GOMA Turns 10 Summer Festival runs from 18 to 22 January with five days of artist workshops, talks, performances, films and tours for kids and adults. Other highlights include a bumper-size edition of Up Late across Friday and Saturday evenings and an adults-only workshop event, Arts & Craft After Dark.

Children will especially appreciate the interactive exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery Children’s Art Centre, which was designed to coincide with “Dulka Warngiid—Land of All”, last year’s major retrospective of the work of Sally Gabori (Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda). Developed in collaboration with Sally Gabori’s daughters, Elsie, Amanda and Dorothy Gabori, “The Gabori Sisters: Gathering by the Sea” takes children on a journey to the artists’ homeland of Bentinck Island in Queensland’s Gulf of Carpentaria. There are interactive, hands-on making and multimedia activities to introduce visitors to the unique and important relationship the Kaiadilt people share with the sea and the creatures who inhabit the waters around the island. Next door to GOMA at the Queensland Museum, visitors will be encouraged step inside the world’s greatest experiment, the renowned “Hadron Collider” exhibition from

London’s Science Museum on show until 25 April. The exhibition shares the passion of 10,000 men and women from around the world who are trying to uncover the universe’s fundamental building blocks at CERN deep under the border between Switzerland and France. Summer is also perfect market weather for Brisbane. Explore the ingenuity and creativity of Brisbane’s emerging artists, entrepreneurs, musicians, food lovers and collectors at South Bank’s The Collective Markets held every Friday night until Sunday afternoon at Stanley Street Plaza. For an insight into the latest fashion, jewellery and homewares, head to the Young Designers Market also held at South Bank on the first Sunday of each month with the next market on 5 February. Close by in West End you can take a trip around the world at the Boundary Street Markets with sweet treats from Romania, Malaysia, Turkey,

Nigeria, Tibet, Japan, Greece, Eritrea, Brazil, America and more on Friday and Saturday evenings from 4pm. Every Saturday, Fortitude Valley Markets are full of unusual finds with their suitcase rumbles while Eagle Farm Markets has over 100 stalls each Sunday filled with fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables, seafood and meats plus a great selection of fashion and gift stalls. Eat Street Markets at Hamilton Wharf are on Friday and Saturday nights from 4pm, set on a disused container wharf next to the Brisbane River. Styled like an Asian night market, the bustling alleyways are filled with stalls selling aromatic cuisines, must have clothing and decorator items. Eat your fill of German sausages, pasta, paella, Thai, cannoli, dumplings, chocolate fondue and more. Another popular attraction with a maritime theme can be found at the southern end of the Parklands. The Queensland Maritime Museum houses historical maritime artefacts, photographs and paintings in its collection, alongside numerous vessels which you can explore, such as the World War II frigate HMAS Diamantina and the powerful steam tug Forceful. If you have an appetite for the unusual and like to browse, visit the Collective Markets, which take place on Fridays at the Stanley Street Plaza from 5pm to 9pm, Saturdays from 10am to 9pm and Sundays from 9am to 4pm. Little Stanley Street plays host to the Young Designers Market on the first Sunday of every month from 10am to 4pm. Everything at this market is handmade by the stall holders. Alongside the river there is River Quay, a collection of sleek dining options ranging from champagne breakfasts at River Quay Fish to rustic Italian share plates at Popolo and the steakhouse sophistication of Stokehouse Q. Fresh seafood, home-style favourites and an Indonesian influence can be found at The Jetty, while Francophiles will appreciate Aquitaine Brasserie, a charming alfresco diner offering a delicious taste of France with classic dishes such as Marseille bouillabaisse. Nearby Grey Street offers an equally impressive choice of dining options.

From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years. At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant.

The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas. Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle. Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a

military base and explosives depot. You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes. The western side is popular with mountain bike riders while those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers. At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 52 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk. A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake. As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature. Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.

Clefs d’Or Queensland, may I wish all of our readers a safe and prosperous 2017. GET TO A GAME Summer in Brisbane is a sport lover’s dream. The Brisbane International, held at the Queensland Tennis Centre from to 8 January, is back for its 9th consecutive year. This year there are no less than six Grand Slam Champions who will take to the court. They include former men’s world number one Rafael Nadal (Spain), current women’s world number one Angelique Kerber (Germany) and Queensland’s very own, Samantha Stosur. The Big Bash League continues through the month of January at Brisbane’s home of cricket, ‘The Gabba’. It’s a fantastic way to spend an evening ‘under lights’ with all the thrills and spills that come with this shortened and very entertaining version of the game. Alternatively, if neither tennis or cricket are your thing then perhaps get along to a game of soccer or basketball. Both the Brisbane Roar and the Brisbane

Bullets take on their respective opponents on various dates throughout January. LES CLEFS D’OR The month of December was full of activity for the Brisbane concierge network. Events included the running of the inaugural Brisbane Hospitality Scavenger Hunt (congratulations goes to Stamford Plaza), attending a performance under the Big Top of Cirque du Soleil’s “KOOZA” (the season runs until 8 January), dinner at The Spaghetti House Trattoria (vibrant, cosy, Italian fare, the perfect pre-show location) and to finish off the month, climbing the iconic Story Bridge! It was a fantastic experience that I cannot recommend highly enough. Tours run at various times of the day and include both twilight and night climbs.
