The Essential Dallas-Fort Worth Where magazine has come a long way since 1936, when it launched in Detroit. We're commemorating the brand's 80th birthday in every issue with an 80-minute itinerary to the most-loved locales in the city. First up: Oak Cliff's charming Bishop Arts District. 80 MINUTES IN: The eclectic Bishop Arts District in the heart of north Oak Cliff is flourishing now more than ever. With less than two hours to absorb its charming vibe, make the most of your tour by starting at the Wild Detectives or Espumoso Caffé for a cozy, energizing cup of espresso. Then, explore the various independent retailers along Bishop Avenue and Davis Street, in the heart of north Oak Cliff: For apparel, hit Neighborhood, Strut or Epiphany; for gifts and home
The Bishop Arts District décor ranging from funky to contemporary, peruse Bishop Street Market, Fete-ish and Society; and for vintage (or just cool stuff in general), head to M’antiques. Grab a sandwich at Bolsa Mercado or Dallas Grilled Cheese Co., then get inspired by the modern and surreal at Ginger Fox Gallery or play a round of pool at Oak Cliff Social Club. Finally, stop at Emporium Pies for a slice of heavenly goodness to go. www.bishopartsdistrict.com

MEDITERRANEAN In the North Dallas suburb of Richardson, Afrah has been the go-to place for authentic Lebanese fare. An alum of the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” the familyowned restaurant started as a small pastry shop and has since expanded from its humble, original space into a palace-like building next door, and has opened a location in Irving. Afrah’s famous daily lunch buffet includes all the hummus, baba ghanoush, shawarma, tabbouleh and kofta one could ever eat, but the full menu is available anytime. Reserve some of your appetite for dessert, though, as the variety of baklava and pastries—and the gelato—are well worth it. In nearby Addison, Chef Mansour Gorji’s Canary by Gorji serves up “New Mediterranean” dishes and preparedto-perfection steaks. Regionally influenced flavors hail from Greece and Italy to Spain, North Africa and the Middle East for exotic cuisine that’s both creative and contemporary.
tandoori meats, tikka masala, curry and several vegan/vegetarian options (matter paneer, channa dal, aloo gobi and more) since 1985. Sip on a chai, darjeeling tea or mango lassi to complete the experience.
INDIAN For those craving cuisine that doesn’t skimp on spice, India Palace Restaurant & Bar is the place. The longstanding Indian restaurant in North Dallas has been satisfying Dallas diners with traditional dishes such as
FRENCH The French Room, located within the historic Adolphus Hotel downtown, has long been considered a Dallas institution. Patrons looking for an elegant dining experience consisting of multiple courses, an extensive selection of Petrossian caviars and a Chef’s Tasting Menu with wine pairings selected by the house sommelier. Bouchon 1314, a newly opened bistro and wine shop in the Oak Cliff neighborhood, offers seasonal, Europeaninspired fare. Locals love the mussels in Provencal broth, prepared vegetables, grilled entrées and reasonably priced wine list. LATIN AMERICAN/MEXICAN We’re not talking about Texmex here; when it comes to executing the true flavors of Mexico, find authenticity in an intimate, upscale setting at Javier’s. This Highland Park establishment is a longtime local favorite due to its top shelf tequila bar, cigar lounge and flavorful dishes. For Spanish cuisine, head
Casa Rubia
to charming tapas restaurant Café Madrid. Discover elevated ambiance with weekly appearances by a live band, whose melodies and rhythms that transport diners to a charming sidewalk café in Barcelona. Casa Rubia in Trinity Groves, puts a modern spin on Spanish small plates and a paella that changes daily. For a light meal or happy hour, order a charcuterie board with a glass of sangria or Spanish wine. ASIAN Chef Teiichi Sakurai (owner of One Arts Plaza’s award-winning Tei-An restaurant) opened the standing-room-only Ten Ramen in 2015. What it lacks in square footage is made up for in hot, tasty broth and freshly cooked noodles accompanied by perfectly roasted pork bellyand an authentic Japanese dining experience. For dim sum, look no further than Kirin Court in Richardson. Order off the menu for traditional dishes like Peking duck and appetizers for the adventurous (think shark fin dumplings and jellyfish with sesame oil). Served daily, the dim sum menu is Kirin Court’s specialty; and as carts arrive at tables filled with hot shrimp dumplings, pork buns and other traditional tapas-style Chinese delicacies, it’s not hard to see why.

OLD MEETS NEW AT ENCORE PARK DOWNTOWN Built for Warner Bros. in 1929, 508 Park was once an architectural icon. Also the recording site of blues legend Robert Johnson, Gene Autry and others, the dilapidated building remained vacant for decades; today the renovated space is Encore Park, comprising the 508 Amphitheater (which hosts concerts, film screenings and events), a community garden, and a sculpture wall that illuminates the city’s culture-rich history. In 2016, the campus will house an art studio, the Museum of Street Culture, and once again, a recording studio, providing a revitalized creative hub for all walks of life in downtown. 1835 Young St., encoreparkdallas.org
Calling all gamers and arcade enthusiasts: Level up at the new National Videogame Museum at the Frisco Discovery Center, a pinball wizard’s paradise dedicated to the history of the industry. From early virtual reality games since the early 1970s and a prototype of the world’s first gaming system, the museum includes multiple interactive exhibits and displays showcasing vintage Atari consoles, rare prototypes by Sega and Nintendo and a hall of gaming stations for visitors to go head-tohead at thousands of games. After browsing the exhibits and enjoying the art installations and murals from talented locals, spend the afternoon in Pixel Dreams, a 1980s-inspired arcade outfitted with all the classics: Pac-Man, Galaga, Centipede, Donkey Kong, Asteroids and more. 8004 Dallas Pkwy., Frisco, 972.668.8400, www.nvmusa.org

TRENDING: “NEW SOUTHERN” SUPPERS Chef Matt McCallister (of FT-33 fame) opened his second restaurant, Filament, in early December. It is already receiving recognition from critics, bloggers and the local cuisine scene in town. Known for attractions like the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium and Six Flags Over Texas, Arlington—now nicknamed the “American Dream city”— highlights its progressive, art-oriented identity with a public steel sculpture accented with cutouts of birds by artists Laura Kimpton and Jeff Schomberg. As part of the artists’ “BIG WORDS” series, “DREAM” made its debut at the annual Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert, but it has since been widely welcomed and embraced by the Arlington community. 200 W. Credited as America’s first shopping center, Highland Park Village has been home to time-honored tenants like Chanel and Christian Louboutin for decades, but a new crew of boutiques in town are well-deserving of attention. For the ladies, alice + olivia and Dior Beauty offer feminine luxury at its finest; additionally, fashion, fitness and music collide at upscale activewear boutique Bandier. An eclectic mix of designer gifts, décor, apparel and accessories comprise Market, a curated haven of goods that appeals to the effortlessly chic shopper. Described as a “lifestyle boutique,” Market doubles as an outpost for LA-based Sugarfina, known for high-end candies such as its signature champagne-infused Gummy Bears (take your pick between Brut and Rosé). Most recently, Detroit-based Shinola has arrived, its second DFW location (see p. 14). Highland Park Village veteran Hermes has settled into its original space, now with twice the square footage. The second-story showroom, accessible via stone staircase, stocks home accessories and tableware from its Maison collection—and features a skylight to brighten up the shopping experience. 214.443.9898, hpvillage.com

[WHERE INSIDE]
My Dallas/Fort Worth that I’m still watching “Scandal,” but I’m so far into it now I might as well keep going. Do you get to explore other cities when you’re on the road? Yeah, it depends on the timing and scheduling but between everybody, especially with this team ... everybody’s got their favorite restaurants in certain cities, so it’s kind of cool to experience different restaurants other than what you would normally do. For me, my restaurant was Truluck’s every time I came into Dallas.
Wesley Matthews [Guard, Dallas Mavericks]
NBA star Wesley Matthews has already has proven to be a valuable asset (who's also exciting to watch) to the Mavs team. We met with the 29-year-old Wisconsin native in Uptown to discuss what life's been like off the court since moving to Dallas—from the road to recovery during preseason to the transition to a new team (and new town). Visit wheretraveler.com for the full story and scenes from the photo shoot.
Have you had time to relax or explore Dallas? It’s the off-season, which has been all rehab and training, trying to get back to full strength to be ready for the season. It’s still an ongoing thing (I don’t
know when it’s ever going to stop really!); but everything’s been good and healthy, and I continue to get stronger and better every single day.
For visitors coming into Dallas, what should they check out? Something I want to do that I haven’t done yet is check out the Perot Museum. And there’s also an aquarium [the Dallas World Aquarium] I haven’t been to yet. Obviously, they should come to a game, but really, they should just go to any restaurant; every one I’ve been to has been amazing.
When you’re with the team after a win, is there a place you guys go to celebrate? I mainly just follow my teammates around, but I’ve been to So and So’s right around here [in Uptown] and it was a pretty good time. I had my birthday at Candleroom [last month] and it was fun. Actually all of my teammates came out to my birthday, so that was cool. What are some of your goals or resolutions for 2016? To remain healthy; obviously, to win as many games as possible; and to just have fun and try to be happy every single day. What we do for a living is a blessing and not many people will get the chance to experience that— not being a professional athlete, but doing what they love. I try not to lose sight of that. What do you do for fun here? Winning games! But I haven’t really gotten into much lately. Between schedules for rehab, practice, games and travel (and we’re still getting the house in order), I mainly just want to relax when I get a chance. How do you relax? Watch TV? Exactly. I like “Modern Family”; “Game of Thrones”; “How to Get Away with Murder”… I’m mad

What has it been like adjusting to Dallas? Dallas is awesome—it’s my first real big city. My first "big city" was in Utah, and then Portland [playing with the Trailblazers] for five years ... [there’s] just such a variety of everything in Dallas. Plus, I have family down here— so many cousins I couldn’t even tell you.
Would you consider yourself more of a homebody since you’re always on the go? I’m definitely a homebody. Every once in a while I might want to go try to find a nice place to shoot pool … but I can’t even tell you the last time I went to go see a movie.
Are there any other restaurants you'd recommend? There's also Hillstone. We went to Kenichi last night.
