The Essential Dallas-Fort Worth Where magazine turns the big 8-0 this year, so we're celebrating the milestone with 80-minute itineraries to North Texas' most-loved locales. In our final issue of 2016, we head to what is recognized as the first shopping center in the United States. 80 MINUTES IN:
Highland Park Village
The luxury retail mecca that is Highland Park Village transforms into much more than a shopping destination this time of year: Leaves change colors, trees reveal their branches and twinkling white lights illuminate the area (sure, you'll find the only McQueen, DVF, and Balenciaga boutiques in Texas; and it goes without saying a trip to Anthropologie or Madison for last-minute gifts will occur).
In any case, 80 minutes affords just enough time to sip a latté or glass of champagne at Royal Blue Grocery while reading, reflecting and watching as groups gather outside for Christmas light tours in horsedrawn carriages—an annual tradition of which I've grown fonder each year. I hope you find the experience as lovely, enchanting and memorable as I do, or discover your own holiday magic here in DFW.

From Wednesday to Sunday at this time of year, the Arboretum remains open in the evenings to see the vignettes aglow as holiday music plays throughout the garden. Don’t miss Santa, Frosty, live reindeer and other seasonal friends on site at the Arboretum on the weekends through Dec. 20 from noon to 4 pm, and daily tours of the Santa Clause Collection exhibit through Dec. 31. 8525 Garland Road, 214.515.6500, www.dallasarboretum.org

HIGHLAND PARK VILLAGE When the sun goes down, take a trip to the esteemed Highland Park Village, aglow with millions of white lights, and enjoy carriage tours of the area’s Texas-sized residential lighting displays beginning the weekend after Thanksgiving. Another decades-old tradition, carriage rides through Highland Park offer intimate excursions filled with holiday romance and unforgettable moments that wil be cherished for years to come. Mockingbird Lane and Preston Road, www.hpvillage.com
While we may not always have a white Christmas, snowflakes are at least a guarantee. How can we predict the weather, you ask? In addition to the City of Frisco’s snow-filled family fun (p. 11), the city of Garland’s Christmas on the Square (between State and Main Streets and Fifth and Sixth Streets,www.christmasonthesquare.com) brings snow hills, snowman building, reindeer and more to downtown on Thursday, Dec. 1 from 5:30-9:30 pm. If you’re into horse-drawn carriage or wagonette rides through larger-than-life displays of holiday lights, look no further than Highland Park Village (Mockingbird Lane at Preston Road, www.hpvillage. com), the upscale shopping center that becomes a glittering canvas covered in festive white lights every season. The City of Addison’s Vitruvian Park becomes a colorful, magical wonderland of shimmering LED-covered trees during Vitruvian Lights (3966 Vitruvian Way, Addison,
www.vitruvianpark.com). The tradition kicks off right after Thanksgiving with a concert and mini-festival and lasts through New Year’s Day. Right between Dallas and Fort Worth, Prairie Lights (5610 Lake Ridge Pkwy., Grand Prairie, www.prairielights.org) offers a holiday adventure starting Nov. 24. The journey begins with a car ride beneath a tunnel of millions of lights and ends with a Holiday Village filled with hot chocolate and apple cider, kettle corn, a walk-through lighted forest and more (we hear Santa will be there, too). Finally, Fort Worth’s 34th annual XTO Parade of Lights (www.fortworthparadeoflights.org.) returns to Sundance Square Sunday, Nov. 20 at 6 pm. Drawing tens of thousands of spectators each year, the event is the largest illuminated holiday parade in Texas and features over half a million lights adorning floats, horse-drawn carriages and more. Reserve seats early to claim a prime spot to watch, then stay for the tree lighting ceremony afterwards.

Inventive craft cocktails and signature libations to stay warm this season. There’s something to be said about the pleasure of sipping a Hot Toddy, Irish coffee or cinnamon-infused eggnog on a winter day. These mixologist-approved beverages promise ingenuity, gourmet seasonal ingredients and cozy ambiance that will warm patrons up from the inside out.
• At NYLO Las Colinas, the S’mores Crunch Cocktail was created for National S’mores Day earlier this year. Similar to a White Russian, the smoothy, creamy cocktail is made with whiskey and Kahlua Pumpkin Spice, along with all the campfire essentials: Chocolate, graham cracker and a marshmallow for garnish. This drink is the perfect choice for those who prefer to sip their dessert. www.nylohotels.com
It’s no secret that Texas’ fine wine scene is on the upswing. This season, uncork the taste of the holidays with wines made with Texas-grown grapes or created by the city’s top chefs—or better yet, take home a bottle as a gift to either yourself or your most discerning wine drinkers. Hailing from the Texas Hill Country, Bending Branch Winery’s 2015 Comfortage (a full-bodied white wine) as well as its S’mores Crunch Cocktail • Over at The Second Floor bar 2012 Texas Tannat (the label’s signature red wine and bistro inside the Westin Galgrape) have been well-received by the Texas fine leria Dallas, mixologist Gina Gotwine community; both wines pair well with smoked tlich has reinvented a childhood meats, ‘heavier’ holiday entrées and cool fall weath- favorite. Now at the Dallas Contemporary (1) is "Bruce Weber: Far From Home," an exhibition comprising 250 photographs and videos offering an insightful glimpse into the renowned fashion photographer’s international travels. Find a small collection of portraits by Weber featuring some of the most iconic artists of the 20th century in front of Neiman Marcus at NorthPark Center, presented in conjunction with the Dallas Contemporary. U.S. politics is in the hot seat at the Nasher Sculpture Center (2) for "Kathryn Andrews: Run for President." Finally, Get to know the creative genius of young Monet through a first-of-its-kind exhibition at the Kimbell Art Museum (3) highlighting about 60 paintings completed by the Impressionist master during his most formative years.
Visit Fort Worth's Amon Carter Museum(1), where admission is always free and there's always something new to experience. Case in point: Gabriel Dawe's stunning installation 'Plexus No. 34,' currently on display in the atrium. Similarly, get a culture fix without breaking the bank at the Irving Arts Center (2), which offers free admission to its galleries and sculpture garden. The venue, which plays host to dance and theater performances, currently houses a stunning temporary exhibition presented by National Geographic. Finally, there's no better way to explore Uptown than by way of the charming M-Line Trolley (3). This nostalgic mode of transportation is free to ride, and offers service throughout the action-packed neighborhood as well as the Dallas Arts District.
Get immersed in DFW’s thriving live music and nightlife scene in Deep Ellum (1), where local bands and DJs can be found performing at various venues every night of the week. Try The Free Man for New Orleans-style funk, Wit's End for alternative, Twilite Lounge for rock and soul, and Three Links for a little bit of everything. Dance and electronic music fans should make a point to visit It’ll Do (2), a no-frills nightclub that brings international talent and a high-energy local crowd to its LED dance floor every weekend. No longer a members-only club, the recently renovated Foundation Room at the House of Blues (3) has added contemporary design upgrades, new craft cocktails, a globally-inspired small plates menu and a diverse roster of free entertainment every night of the week.
