WHERE ROMANCE COMES TO
Like dreamers, we imagined spotting Ponce’s landing from atop the St. Augustine Lighthouse . Like admirers, we gazed across the bay at the glittering history of Nights of Lights. Like royalty, we sauntered back to St. George Street for vittles and drinks. And like lovers, we rode off in the starry seaside night to a Ponte Vedra inn. Through time we traversed. Across ages past. In a place where history is not the same old story. Nights of Lights illuminates the Old City from Nov. 19, 2016, to Jan. 31, 2017. Lodging rates from $78–$426. St. Augustine is a pet-friendly paradise. Choose from 50 pet-friendly accommodations ranging from bed & breakfast inns to beach resorts like (1) Holiday Isle Oceanfront Resort. Attractions like the historic Fountain of Youth and Colonial Quarter Living History Museum welcome pets. (2) A free, monthly “pup-crawl” takes pets and their people on historic walking tours of St. Augustine. There are also dozens of dog-friendly eateries like (3) Old City House Inn & Restaurant and Salt Life Food Shack, where water and food bowls are readily available.
Cozy up on a cool evening on a carriage ride through Historic St. Augustine for Nights of LIghts Nov. 19-Jan. 31. All of the city’s most stunning buildings, like (1) The Lightner Museum, sparkle in 3 million twinkle lights. For couples who love outdoor adventure, ride horses on the beach with (2) Amelia Island Horseback Riding. At World Golf Hall of Fame, sharpen your golf skills together at the TOURAcademy with Anne Cain. For a romantic meal, head to (3) Orsay in Jacksonville’s charming Avondale neighborhood for seasonal French food and creative cocktails.
The First Coast is a shopper’s delight with high-end retailers and small boutiques packing lots of local flair. With the holidays and Valentine’s Day, (1) Underwood’s offers fine jewelry and engagement rings. For the best local boutiques, Jacksonville’s St. Johns Avenue and (2) San Marco Square, along with St. Augustine’s St. George Street and Amelia Island’s Centre Street, are favorite shopping districts. The best malls in the area are (3) St. Johns Town Center with 150 high-end stores, and two St. Augustine outlet malls offering discounts of up to 75 percent off.
