GOING FOR

GOLD ON YOUR MARKS, get set, go! And we’re off and running!

The countdown is on. This month marks one year till the 2018 Commonwealth Games, which will be held here on the gorgeous Gold Coast. The venues are ready and the athletes’ village is well on its way, as the Gold Coast gets set to host this magnificent event. So mark your diaries, because from 4 to 15 April next year, the place to be is the Gold Coast. There’ll be 70 nations and territories competing in 18 sports and seven para-sports at 18 competition venues. It will be the largest event to be held in Australia this decade with 6,600 athletes and team officials and 15,000 volunteers at the Games, with an expected 1.5 million spectators. With so many sports in the program, it is a huge task to get each event ready for the Games. Former Olympian Anita Palm is Head of Sport at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation. Her job is to bring together the team that is going to implement all of the 18 sports. “We’ve got a big team already of about 50, with a sport manager looking after each sport,” she said.

The Gold Coast is excited to mark one year till the 2018 Commonwealth Games, writes Roshan Sukhla.

“I’m excited about the way we have managed to engineer an event that just encapsulates the Gold Coast, especially the cycling road, where we’ve changed the course after reviewing what was done earlier, and now have a start/finish right on the beachfront at Currumbin going up into the mountains through roads that have got trees kissing on either side together, it’s a pretty amazing route.” Anita is also the first female Head of Sport at a Commonwealth Games, and is passionate about equality in sports. She said, “Generally you need the support of everyone to introduce change and we’ve managed to lobby with the International Federations and Commonwealth Games Federation, who are completely supportive of adding seven more events.” “This means our Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast have equal events for men and women for the first time ever and it’s also not only the Commonwealth Games, but it will be the first multidisciplinary sporting event in the world that has equal events, so that’s pretty exciting.”

“Every time you achieve a world first you do feel a bit proud”, she said. She is not the only one who is feeling proud of the Games. The Games Ambassadors are also flying the flag for the Gold Coast. Hometown girl Sally Pearson is one of the Ambassadors. Best known as a world, Olympic and dual Commonwealth Games hurdles gold medallist, the Gold Coast resident is thrilled to be part of the GC2018 family. She said, “The Commonwealth Games is an amazing experience for athletes and spectators, and in 2018 it will be the Gold Coast, my home town, showcased to the world.” “The 2018 Games will inspire a new generation of young athletes and provide the perfect opportunity for the next wave of stars to shine.

Sally Pearson. Photo: Brad Wagner.

Sally will be looking to defend her Commonwealth 100-metre hurdles title at the Games. The other ambassadors are Paralympian athlete Kurt Fearnley, swimmer Cam McEvoy, cyclist Anna Meares and netballer Laura Geitz. These Games are set to be an exciting event for everyone here on the Gold Coast, and we can’t wait to cheer on all the athletes from around the Commonwealth, as they go for gold! ■ Ticket information has now been released and is on the Commonwealth Games website, with children’s tickets from $10 and adult tickets from $20, including free public transport on event day. The ticket request phase begins on 24 April. For more information, visit gc2018.com

PRECINCTS GOLD COAST

Main Beach BY JANE HODGES

Marina Mirage at Main Beach. Photo: Gold Coast Tourism.

JUST NORTH of the busy throng of Surfers Paradise, you’ll find Main Beach—a relaxed mix of cafés, restaurants, bars, resort shopping and a choice of calm or surf beaches. It’s also home to Marina Mirage and Mariners Cove Marina—the jumping off points for all manner of water-based tours.

THINGS TO DO Main Beach beaches are a lot less crowded than Surfers Paradise’s iconic stretches of sand. For calm protected beach swimming head for the inside beaches of The Spit— a permanent sand spit that separates the mainland and Southport Broadwater from the Pacific Ocean. On the other side of The Spit are lifesaver patrolled surf beaches with flagged swimming areas—the Seaway Beach (patrolled November to April), Sea World Beach (patrolled on weekends and school holidays) and Sheraton Beach and Main Beach (both patrolled all year round). You can walk, run or ride along the Gold Coast Oceanway, a 36-kilometre network of coastal pathways stretching from the Gold Coast Seaway (The Spit) to the Point Danger Lighthouse (Coolangatta). Enjoy a family day at Sea World— one of Main Beach’s top attractions.

It’s the perfect day out with dolphin and seal shows as well as the chance to see sharks, stingrays, penguins and polar bears. The Storm Rollercoaster, an interactive dinosaur display and an acrobatic ski show will keep everyone happy! There’s so much to do on the water— go whale watching (humpbacks cruise past from June to October) with Gold Coast Whale Adventures; do a fourwheel-drive buggy and Segway tour of South Stradbroke Island; sail, jet ski, jet board or stand-up paddleboard on the Broadwater, take a thrill ride with Paradise Jetboating or see it all from the skies with a helicopter ride over the highrise skyline, the coast and islands with Gold Coast Helitours—all leave from Mariners Cove Marina. You can even learn to surf at The Spit with Get Wet Surf School. WHERE TO EAT You can mix it with the locals and experience some of the coast’s best bars and dining on Tedder Avenue. When your watch says cocktail o’clock, start with a Jalapeno Margarita or a local Burleigh Brewing Co beer at Bar Chico. Settle in for some share plates from chef Darren Baranello’s Mediterranean, Asian and

12 WHERE GOLD COAST I APRIL 2017 I wheretraveler.com

Middle Eastern-inspired menu, or wander down the Avenue to Shuck for some serious people watching and some of the Coast’s freshest seafood—the sand crab lasagne is sensational! For wonderful water views, join the locals for a sunset drink at Southport Yacht Club. Get a table overlooking the moored yachts and as the sun fades you’ll see the lights of the Gold Coast twinkling over the water. The meals are great too! For casual fish and chips or fresh caught local prawns and crabs, head to Peters’ Fish Market. Outside tables overlook the fishing fleet or find a spot across the road on Main Beach. Right next door is Palazzo Versace Hotel—offering high tea at Le Jardin, casual waterfront dining at Vie Bar & Restaurant or a gastronomic adventure to remember at Vanitas. Glass Dining & Lounge Bar is known for its succulent steaks; Omeros Bros for supreme seafood in stylish surrounds; and Ristorante Fellini for the finest Italian fare. The best bets for breakfast are Providore Marina Mirage or local favourite Lark Café and Grocer on Main Beach Parade. WHERE TO SHOP High-end centre Marina Mirage offers more than 80 speciality stores (fashion, art and design, homewares and even a pooch boutique). PRECINCTS GOLD COAST, COOLANGATTA

The Coolest End of the Gold Coast BY KERRY HEANEY

Surfers at Coolangatta. Photo: Tourism and Events Queensland.

HOME TO SOME OF the Gold Coast’s most famous surfing spots, relaxed Coolangatta is lined with white sand beaches flanked by tall Norfolk pines. It was named after the schooner Coolangatta, wrecked there in 1846, and is the most southern suburb of City of Gold Coast sharing the border with New South Wales.

For some of the Gold Coast’s best surfing conditions, head to Kirra Beach, Snapper Rocks or Rainbow Bay, but you might also want to try throwing in a line to catch snapper, bream or tailor. There’s also plenty of whale watching opportunities from the heights of Point Danger. All that sand activity will work up an appetite. You won’t have to leave the water views to enjoy a feed if you claim a spot on the huge beachfront balcony of the Coolangatta Surf Club. It’s a great spot for whale and dolphin watching and also perfect for a weekend breakfast. The restaurant features local produce with a range of steaks, seafood and salads. Finish your meal with authentic Italian gelato and enjoy their free Wi-Fi. The club was awarded Best Dining in Queensland at the Clubs Queensland Awards for Excellence 2016. At the tropically-styled Xenia Grill you’ll discover delicious, fresh Greek food created using a combination of

traditional cooking methods and family recipes. Choose from share plates filled with fried sardines or char-grilled octopus and baby calamari, all infused with the flavours of Greece. Pick up an organic The Daily Ride coffee roasted in nearby Byron Bay and you’ll have plenty of energy to enjoy one of Xenia’s occasional Zorba the Greek dance sessions. For an Italian Trattoria experience, try Brad Nascone’s Delizioso @ the Strand. Along with favourites from his Brisbane restaurant at Bulimba, Delizioso at Coolangatta pumps out a large range of Italian standards along with new and innovative dishes using a stone hearth pizza oven. The extensive pizza menu is complemented by a wide selection of risotto and pasta, but you can also tuck in to Darling Downs wagyu and porchetta served with truffle mashed potato, apple puree and gorgonzola cream. Positioned on almost a block of beachfront land with sweeping views over Coolangatta Beach, The Strand

The glass-louvered facade of The Strand’s restaurant zone runs the length of the building, maximising the beachfront views. Look out for Gold Coast chef Daniel Ridgeway’s Bin 72 eatery, Black Sheep Espresso Baa’s lamb salad, Griffith Street Larder’s hand cut chips and crumbed zucchini sliders and Passiontree Velvet’s macarons and cake. Inland from the towering skyscrapers and world-famous surfing beaches is a tranquil wonderland of rainforests, waterfalls and charming small villages. By Danielle Lancaster. WELCOME TO TAMBORINE Mountain,

home to Queensland’s oldest national park and the third oldest in the world. In less than an hour from the Gold Coast’s surf and sand you can be in the midst of one of the area’s hinterland gems. Tamborine Mountain, rising over 600 metres, is the first hill behind the Gold Coast, giving it the ‘Green behind the Gold’ status. This is the most northern section of the great volcanic caldera of Mt Warning and forms part of ‘Australia’s Green Cauldron’, an Australian National Landscape of Significance. Tamborine Mountain National Park consists of different sections. The Witches Falls Section, with its grassy picnic areas surrounded by a natural greenhouse, was the first section declared in 1908. Since then 13 sections

have been added. There’s Joalah, Cedar Creek, The Knoll, Palm Gove and MacDonald to name a few. For a wheel chair/pram friendly walk consider Esme Street Environmental Park—a community rainforest maintained area. The short Curtis Falls walk in the Joalah Section of the national park is easy and if you can only fit in one walk, choose this one. At Hang Gliders Lookout the panorama spans across the Border Ranges, valleys and to neighbouring mountains such as Lamington. If the wind is right, keen hang gliders will be preparing and running off the grassy ledge for their descent on the thermals into the Scenic Rim below. If you’re brave you too can soar like a bird doing a tandem jump with South East Queensland Hang Gliding. It’s also the perfect location to watch the sunset.

The Gold Coast’s hinterland is recognised as one of the most biodiverse regions in Australia. Its subtropical rainforests harbour a huge number of rare and endangered animals and plants. Over 170 species of birds have been recorded, and numerous frogs, insects, reptiles and intriguing fungi can be seen by those with an eager eye. Today’s visitors can experience not only natural but also man-made treasures. There are award-winning restaurants, artisan’s studios, shopping for antiques and knick-knacks at quaint outlets and quirky mountain markets. Plus roadside stalls, wineries, distilleries and local events. Gallery Walk is the tourist hub of the mountain with its diverse collection of stores offering everything from fudge to soap to art to clothes to fortune telling. Jasmin Organics, at the top of Tamborine Mountain, combines nature and science in an organic skincare and beauty range. Stop by their beauty shop to sample their award winning products. Knowledgeable staff are on hand to help you discover how to achieve radiant, healthy and younger looking skin.

Attractions worth adding to your list include Tamborine Mountain Distillery and Thunder Bird Park where you can dig for thunder eggs. Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is a unique eco-adventure which has elevated walkways in the beautiful rainforest canopies. It is set in a magical 30 acres of privately owned rainforest and the walk takes approximately 45 minutes at a leisurely pace.

The entire walk totals 1.5 kilometres and is a combination of forest floor trails, 300 metres of high-tech steel bridges and a 40-metre cantilever bridge that soars a breathtaking 30 metres above the creek and rainforest below. Another popular thing to do is to see glowworms. Do a tour at night into the National Park to see them in their natural habitat or visit the man-made Glow Worm Caves at Cedar Creek Estate where you can see the nocturnal glowworms during the day in realistic underground chambers. LES CLEFS D’OR

CHEF CONCIERGE, SOFITEL GOLD COAST BROADBEACH

INTERNATIONAL Past President: COLIN TOOMEY,

WELCOME TO THE Gold Coast. On

behalf of Derek Fenn, Marriott Surfers Paradise Resort; Christian Espino, InterContinental Sanctuary Cove; Nicholas Fisher, Palazzo Versace Gold Coast and myself, we look forward to helping you enjoy our patch of paradise. Les Clefs d’Or is a worldwide society of professional concierge. Founded in Paris, France in the early 1950s, we are a unique society of like-minded individuals striving to deliver service to the traveller. The parameters of legal and moral are the guidelines we work under, so the scope of which we are able to deliver is left up to your imagination. The Gold Coast is full of wonderful restaurants, cafés and bars as well as being known as Australia’s theme park capital. The Hinterland offers visitors a number of nature experiences and exposure to natural beauty or, as we like to call it, the ‘Green Behind the Gold’.

Sun, sand and surf are three words that pretty much sum us up! We are not called the Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise for nothing. Our beaches are some of the best in the world; constant warm temperatures all year round make us the envy of the southern states. Remember to swim between the flags, as the motto goes ‘if we can’t see you we can’t save you.’ It is an exciting time on the Coast with all the construction of new facilities for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games as well as Jupiters Casino, Pacific Fair Shopping Centre and our new light rail, which all play a part in making the Gold Coast one of the most liveable cities in Australia. Relax, take a deep breath and enjoy. Keep an eye out for our golden crossed keys and make sure you introduce yourself.
