SMASHING GOOD FUN AT THE OPEN By Jenny Burns
Newly crowned world number one, Andy Murray, will face stiff competition from a hungry pack led by the now world number two and last year’s Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic. The competition on the women’s side will be equally hard fought with defending champion and world number one, Angelique Kerber, facing stiff competition from the likes of Serena Williams and many other challengers. However, as previous tournaments have shown, only the extremely brave would ever tip the winner of the Australian Open. And that’s one of the joys of the tournament—the many players who suddenly appear on the radar.
OVER THE YEARS the Australian Open has developed
a reputation for offering something for everyone. This year’s tournament, scheduled from 16 to 29 January at Melbourne Park, is set to further enhance that reputation. For tennis lovers there’s the chance to see the world’s top players in action, while for those who just love the buzz and many activities around the tournament, there’s more happening than ever before. Barring injury all the world’s top tennis players are expected to play in the first major tournament of the year. 10 WHERE MELBOURNE I JANUARY 2017 I wheretraveler.com

Many of those players start their journeys in the tournament on the back courts of Melbourne Park, which is why for many fans the first week is the best. While the matches may not be as even as the second week, wandering around the courts, watching the many matches on offer and the players training is a great experience. Together with the current crop of players there’s also the chance to see the legends of the game and the top juniors in action. As is the case in the last few years regular visitors to the tournament will see a number of new initiatives off court. These initiatives include The Ballpark, a mini theme park aimed at youngsters and their families. All day entertainment is on offer for kids of all ages. To ensure the tournament is more child-friendly than ever before there’s also a new $5 ground pass (for children
aged three to 14 years, available every day of the tournament outside of the middle weekend). There will also be more live music on offer than ever before, just not in Melbourne Park. Middle Terrace, located within Birrarung Marr next to the tennis centre, will host the musical program, Open Sessions. International and local acts will be performing here including Birds of Tokyo, DMA’S, The Temper Trap, Jimmy Eat World and The Living End. Entry to this area will be free on 14 and 15 January. After that an Australian Open ground pass will be needed to access the area. Within Melbourne Park, Grand Slam Oval is being split into precincts themed to reflect Paris, London, New York and Melbourne, each with their own atmosphere, entertainment and food offerings. A number of the players competing in the Open are also playing in the 2017 Priceline Pharmacy Kooyong Classic from 10 to 13 January. Held at the previous home of the Australian Open, Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, the tournament has attracted some of the world’s top male players. Women are also taking part in the round robin tournament this year. Players competing in the men’s draw include Ivo Karlovic, Borna Coric, Lucas Pouille, Gilles Simon, Mikhail Youzhny, Yoshihito Nishioka, Bernard Tomic, David Goffin and Richard Gasquet. Ajla Tomljanovic, Sabine Lisicki and Sorana Cirstea are playing in the women’s event. LOVE MATCH: THE PLAYERS TALK MELBOURNE Ask the world’s tennis players their favourite Grand Slam tournament and most will say the Australian Open. One of the main reasons is their love of Melbourne. We asked some of the top players why they love the city and what they do when they’re not on court. Here are their responses. Novak Djokovic: “I love all the green spaces they have in Melbourne, I often go to relax and reconnect with nature. It is amazing to have so many parks right in the middle of Melbourne.” Andy Murray: “There are so many great restaurants in Melbourne, Japanese and all sorts of cuisines. I like to go out for dinner with my team, relax and have a nice time together.” Stan Wawrinka: “There is so much going on in Melbourne when we play the Open, I like to explore new restaurants as there are some great ones opening every year. Unfortunately, I don’t have so much time to do other things but just walking around the city a little bit is a great experience as everyone is so friendly and there is a great atmosphere.”

Johanna Konta: “Well, I think it’s a given I’ll probably be visiting Hunky Dory’s a few times. I’m already looking forward to it—it’s been nearly a year—so I need to go back! I’ll really just be enjoying the food that Melbourne has on offer; it has such a great food scene.”
Petra Kvitova: “In Melbourne I really enjoy going for walks near my hotel—it’s a beautiful area to explore—and then having a coffee afterwards to relax.” Zhang Shuai: “I go to Chinatown every day. I like Chinese food, and there is really good Chinese food there. Some of the restaurants even do the Chinese food better than in China! I love Sichuan restaurants—I enjoy the spicy food.” Elina Svitolina: “Melbourne is a really nice city. Most of all I really like going to relax at the beach. I’d like to try surfing actually.”

he went in search of the performers. Some he knew he had to have in the show such as Williamson. Others were found after an extensive worldwide search. These performers include Hans Becker, The Cycling Cyclone from Stuttgart, Juggler Extraordinaire The Great Gaston from Paris, aerial cradle performers by Les Incredibles from Montreal, knife throwers The Perilous Perigo’s from Brazil, Lucky Moon from Odessa on the aerial hoop, The Sensational Sozonov from Moscow on rola-bola, The Flying Fins on Teeter board from Helsinki and the classic death-defying highwire act featuring Los Lope from Guadalajara. Williamson is equally in awe of his colleagues. “My jaw just dropped at our first full run-through, it was like watching your best friends do something you never knew they could,” he exclaimed with delight.

WHEN SIMON PAINTER and David
Williamson saw the first full dress rehearsal of “Circus 1903—The Golden Age of Circus” they were almost moved to tears of joy together with awe and amazement. Causing the strongest emotions were baby African elephant Karanga and his mother, Queenie. Significant Objects (the award-winning puppeteers behind “War Horse”) created the two elephants and according to Williamson the emotional impact they made when they first stepped on stage was amazing. “It was a heart in the throat moment— the way they moved, the music used, really everything about their entry onto the stage had a huge emotional impact on me,” explained Williamson who is the show’s ringmaster and is also showcasing his world renowned comic and magical skills. For Painter, the show’s creative and executive producer, the arrival of the elephants was an incredible sight and the culmination of his dream to take circus back to its roots and make it relevant again. “I wanted to move away from the world of Cirque and make a legitimately amazing circus with no story line, just incredible acts, awe inspiring animals, side splitting
comedy, and the decadence, grandeur and showmanship that for me, at least, is the heartbeat of any great show,” explained Painter, who has created and produced acclaimed productions such as “Le Grand Cirque”, “Adrenaline” and “Le Noir—The Dark Side of Cirque” together with “The Illusionists” franchise. Painter found his inspiration for the show from the 1900s. “Huge circuses comprising up to 1,200 people and 700 animals would arrive in towns to perform and you can just imagine the grandeur, sights and sounds they would have created,” he said. “I want to inspire the audience in the same way.” The first dress rehearsal suggests he was successful. “I just sat there in awe watching the performers in action,” Painter recalled. “The high wire act was so spectacular, I still don’t know how they do it. It has never been done in a theatre before.” Once Painter had decided on the concept and format of “Circus 1903”

“Circus 1903” is Williamson’s first experience with a circus and he can’t wait to see the audience reaction. “Many of my shows involve parents and their children and it’s just wonderful hearing children laugh at a show and the delight they also get watching their parents laugh equally as loud,” he said. To prepare for his role both Williamson and the show’s historian have researched circuses of the early 1900s to understand the role of the ringmaster, the music, costumes and set designs. “It’s been a fascinating experience and I am sure audiences around Australia are going to love the show.” “Circus 1903” is playing at Regent Theatre, 191 Collins Street, Melbourne from 3–12 January. STREET OF STYLE ENJOY COLLINS STREET’S STUNNING ARCHITECTURE, AND FASCINATING HISTORY, AS YOU SNAP UP STYLISH BARGAINS AND TERRIFIC TREATS. COLLINS STREET exudes style and
glamour. It’s a boulevard of chic designer shopping, five-star hotels, exclusive jewellers, grand heritage buildings, churches, theatres and private clubs. It’s Melbourne’s premier commercial streetscape with a number of Australia’s largest corporations calling Collins Street home and it has also been the setting for some of Australia’s best known paintings. While there have been many changes over the years with the construction of
a number of modern buildings, its fine nineteenth-century heritage is still strongly evident. Then there are the wonderful plane trees, which line the street looking particularly stunning at night under lights. One of the reasons for Collins Street’s continual appeal is its ability to change with the times. Since 1837 it has been rebuilt several times. It’s also been extended—the last occurring with the continuation of the street across Spencer Street railway lines and into Docklands.

However what hasn’t changed is the street’s appeal as both a business and leisure hub. A Collins Street address is still coveted by major businesses and professionals. The Regent and Athenaeum Theatres continue to attract theatregoers from around the world while worshippers flock to its three historic churches— the Collins Street Baptist Church, St Michael’s Uniting Church and Scots' Church.

FITZROY AND COLLINGWOOD SHOPPING
Fascinating Fitzroy and Collingwood Smith Street, Collingwood. Photo: Josie Withers Photography/Visit Victoria.
THE ADJOINING SUBURBS of Fitzroy and
Collingwood are two of Melbourne’s most fascinating inner city areas. Spend some time wandering around both suburbs’ colourful streets and you’ll understand why they are regarded as the home of Melbourne’s bohemian culture. You’ll discover a fascinating collection of young designer and retro clothes shops selling everything from techno trance wear to fetish clothing, bookshops, galleries filled with work by local artists, cafés and restaurants. Indeed Fitzroy and Collingwood are home to some of the best eating establishments in Melbourne. The feel of the area is very much influenced by the many immigrants who moved here after coming to Australia after World War Two. In more recent times young professionals, artists and students have moved to the area. Brunswick Street provides the perfect introduction to Fitzroy’s culture and atmosphere. You will see quaint and quirky shops and eclectic art on offer in studios, galleries and workshops. Brunswick Street’s cool cafés, restaurants and boisterous bars offer something at any time of the day but really come alive at night with crowds turning up to feast on cuisines from all over the world. Nearby Smith Street is an interesting multicultural streetscape. It’s known for its fine vegetarian and whole foods, you’ll also find plenty of eateries from which to choose. Locals love Easy Tiger (96 Smith Street, Collingwood), which offers some great Asian fusion shareable dishes while St Crispin (300 Smith Street, Collingwood) is known for its modern Australian menu with an open kitchen and cocktail bar. Gelato Messina (237 Smith Street, Fitzroy) is renowned for its icy treats. If you’re looking for brand-name outdoor clothing and gear then Smith Street is a must as brands such as Macpac,
Kathmandu, Icebreaker and Paddy Pallin all have discount outlets here. Smith Street is also home to Chanoyu Spa (1st Floor, 94 Smith Street, Collingwood). Chanoyu is a Japanese word meaning Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony. As drinking tea is a big part in Japanese culture, the spa serves the finest quality Japanese green tea from Japan as well as Naturopathic Herbal Tea made locally. The spa offers a range of beauty and therapeutic treatments including numerous facial and massage options. Fitzroy is also home to The Rose St. Artists’ Market (60 Rose Street, Fitzroy).
The market promotes itself as the home of indie art and design and here every weekend you’ll find stalls full of art, photography, fashion, jewellery, accessories, homewares, collectables and vintage pieces. Like Fitzroy and Collingwood it’s the perfect place to find that hidden gem. Getting There: Numerous buses and trams service Fitzroy and Collingwood including the #11 tram which runs along Collins Street from the city to Brunswick Street and the #86 which runs along Bourke Street to Gertrude and Nicholson Streets. EXPLORE PHILLIP ISLAND
Nature delights at
Phillip Island By Jenny Burns
ONE OF THE BEST ways to spend a summer’s night is to watch Phillip Island’s amazingly cute little penguins come ashore from a day’s fishing and waddle to their sand dune burrows. Fortunately there are many different ways to see this very appealing natural phenomenon as the Phillip Island Nature Parks offers seven options catering for all budgets and interests. These range from general viewing (that is sitting on stands on the beach watching the penguins leave the water) to exclusive ranger led tours. Having experienced a number of these tours one of the newer options— Underground Viewing—has become one of my favourites. Not only does it offer wonderful views of the penguins but it’s also protected from the elements! Built below the newly constructed Penguin Plus viewing stand, this bunker style building features a
25-metre viewing window which looks out at ground level onto the path many of the penguins take from the water to their burrows. Watching the reaction of the hundreds of penguins taking the path to the window was fascinating. Some ignored it, some came up very close for a look and a couple even bumped into it, ensuring some magical penguin viewing experiences. A ranger explained what we could expect before the arrival of the first penguins and then walked around the group explaining the behaviours we were seeing. Twenty minutes after the arrival of the first penguins we could leave the bunker and head up to the Penguin Plus stands which meant we could hear the many and varied noises the penguins were making. They are a noisy bunch! Given numbers on Underground Viewing are limited to 70 it’s a good idea

to book early. The same advice applies to all penguin watching options, especially during the summer months, as demand is extremely high. The new viewing area is one of several new initiatives at Phillip Island over the last year or so. Another is the Antarctic Journey, located at the Nobbies. It uses numerous interactive and immersive experiences to explain and explore Antarctica. A joint venture between Phillip Island Nature Parks and WWF-Australia, the exhibition includes numerous hands-on activities and a multimedia experience. Together with some great audio-visual footage of Antarctica, this area also features impressive ‘augmented reality’ technology, which creates the illusion of being able to touch a penguin, stroke a seal and see a killer whale up close. Tickets to the Antarctic Journey can be purchased individually or as part of the four park super pass. The pass also includes entry to the Penguin Parade, the Koala Conservation Centre where you can see koalas close up in their natural habitat and the historic Churchill Island. Phillip Island is around 90 minutes from Melbourne. There are numerous accommodation options on the island while tour bus companies run daily tours. DAYLESFORD’S MAGICAL WATERS ‘TAKING THE WATERS’ has long
been a favourite pastime of visitors to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs. Given the towns and surrounding areas have Australia’s richest concentration of mineral springs it’s easy to see why. However, there’s a lot more to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs than magical waters. Wonderful food, fascinating shops and galleries and interesting attractions are just some of the many delights on offer. Just the same, any visit should include a mineral water experience and there’s no better place than the Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa. The original Edwardian bathhouse in the Mineral Springs Reserve, built approximately 1895, has undergone a $13 million makeover and now boasts more than 30 wet and dry treatment rooms, making it one of the largest spas in the country. It offers such indulgences as a large mineral relaxation pool and private 100% pure mineral water baths, aroma steam treatment room, Vichy rooms, a large relaxation lounge and its very own Hepburn Pavilion Café. The curative effects of mineral water, salt water and steam provide the ultimate in therapeutic relaxation in the exclusive Sanctuary wing. The Sanctuary includes

the Aroma Steam Room, Salt Therapy Pool, Relaxation Pool, Spa Couches submerged beneath mineral water and an extensive relaxation deck. You can also choose from an array of treatments including indulgent 100% pure private mineral baths, therapeutic and relaxation massages, organic facials, and a selection of indulgent spa rituals. Experienced spa goers will appreciate the sophistication of their professional practitioners and extensive treatment menu. While in the Mineral Springs Reserve, drop into the Hepburn Pavilion Café for a late breakfast or a light lunch made with fresh local ingredients. The Hepburn Pavilion Café has been offering hospitality to locals and visitors alike since 1908 and provides an atmospheric environment for a meal, or fabulous coffee and cake, before or after your Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa experience.
Not far from the bathhouse is another of the region’s popular attractions, Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm. Here you can learn about the lavender and olives grown on the property, wander around herb, cottage and potage gardens and buy locally made goods in the shop. These goods make great presents, especially if you’re looking for something uniquely Australian. Indeed, there’s plenty of great retail therapy available in the area. You’ll find everything from great art at galleries such as The Convent to Alpaca Passion, which sells alpaca-made products. It revisits the history of the atomic test program at Maralinga, Emu Field and Montebello Islands—the forced removal of Indigenous people, the devastation of country, the exposure of servicemen—and its ongoing legacies. Interactive elements will enable visitors to learn about the social, political and environmental dimensions, while placing the Australian story in the context of the nuclear arms race during the Cold War and beyond. DINING RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
Summer Nights Five greats bars to visit in January.
Il Bacaro BY PETER McBREARTY
Spaghettini from Il Bacaro.
IT MAY NOT be the largest, nor the most obvious restaurant diners may come across as they walk the streets and laneways of inner Melbourne, however the rapidity with which Il Bacaro seems to fill each day for lunch and dinner, is an immediate clue as to the popularity of this local Italian gem. Located conveniently just below Russell Street, Il Bacaro has long been a favourite destination for pre-theatre diners, and the ambient moodiness of the interior lends itself equally well to romantic interludes or corporate deal making. Service is friendly, assured and well informed, and yet ultimately as much as anything it is the deftly executed Italian cuisine which ensures the loyalty of the many regulars here. Entrées may include fresh seasonal oysters or Jerusalem artichoke gratin with taleggio, cavolo nero, chanterelle mushroom and olive, or perhaps Wagyu carpaccio, dill mayonnaise, pickled radish, white anchovy, pink peppercorn and quail egg. The tuna crudo, black garlic mayonnaise, wild garlic, shaved bottarga, and salt bush is excellent, while the shallow fried calamari, rocket and balsamic dressing is a delicious testament to the virtue of a simple dish done exceptionally well. Diners might well revolt were Il Bacaro to ever consider taking their signature spaghettini with Moreton Bay bugs, “olio visadi” (olive oil, chilli, garlic, anchovy paste, white wine and fish stock), garlic, chilli and rocket off the menu—the bug meat is both plentiful and delectable. The pappardelle, goat ragù, porcini, broad beans and truffled pecorino is an earthier dish which almost demands it be joined by a glass of something strong and red, while risotto aficionados need look no further than the saffron risotto, with pumpkin, scallops, foie gras, prosciutto and pumpkin seeds. Dishes such as smoked duck breast and baked duck leg with celeriac, chamomile and cumquat, and the suckling pork rotolo with potato purée, fennel, apple, hazelnut and smoked pork broth provide ample evidence the chef’s talents extend beyond pasta and risotto into the realms of meat and poultry, as does the lamb breast served with pea purée, beans, and rosemary, and the hanger steak with sautéed endive, bone marrow sauce, and seeded mustard. Finally, diners may choose to end on a suitably European note with a selection of excellent cheeses with crostini, muscatel and preserve, or alternatively perhaps allow themselves to indulge in something a little sweeter, such as the agave nectar cheesecake with crystallized violet, crème fraiche, pop rocks, blueberry sorbet and fairy floss. The cheesecake though does itself have competition, in the form of some other equally tempting desserts, including a pumpkin semifreddo with blood orange, white chocolate foam, chocolate aero and orange sherbet and a ginger panna cotta served with persimmon purée, poached rhubarb and carrot cake, and also the honey poached pear, freeze dried mandarin, pine nut, ricotta semifreddo, yuzu and poppy seed sorbet. Staff are more than happy to assist with recommendations from the wine list, which is well suited to the menu, and seem to effortlessly navigate the requirements of diners seated both at tables and the bar area. Il Bacaro has more than stood the test of time, retaining its position for almost two decades as a favourite Melbourne dining venue with both locals and visitors alike. However, this very popularity, combined with the Il Bacaro’s relatively compact dimensions, mean that advance reservations are definitely advisable. To plan your journey visit ptv.vic.gov.au or call 1800 800 007, 6am–midnight daily. myki myki is the smart card ticketing system in metropolitan Melbourne and selected regional towns. myki is a durable and re-usable smart card that stores value to pay your public transport fare. myki users enjoy an integrated ticketing system that works across the state on trains, trams and buses. Interstate and overseas visitors can now purchase the myki Visitor Value Pack, for travel on Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses throughout their stay. The myki Visitor Value Pack includes a myki smartcard pre-loaded with enough value for one day’s Zone 1 travel, instructions on how to use myki, an inner Melbourne tram map, a myki protective souvenir wallet, and discounts at 15 attractions worth more than $100 in savings. The myki Visitor Value Pack is available from the PTV Hub at Southern Cross Station, the Melbourne Visitor Centre at Federation Square and SkyBus terminals at Melbourne Airport and Southern Cross Station. Free Tram Zone The Free Tram Zone in Melbourne’s CBD includes the area of the Queen Victoria Market, Victoria Harbour in Docklands, Spring Street, Flinders Street Station and Federation Square. Travel on trams within this zone is free, and you won’t need a myki, however, if your journey starts or finishes outside the boundaries of the Free Tram Zone, you must touch on your myki at the reader in the normal way to make sure you have a valid ticket.

LES CLEFS D’OR
LES CLEFS D’OR The 21st Concierge and Hospitality Ball.
By Nik Adams STATE DIRECTOR FOR VICTORIA LES CLEFS D’OR INTERNATIONAL President: COLIN TOOMEY, The Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney General Secretary: JAMES RIDENOUR, InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto Assistant General Secretary: JACOB DETERING, InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto
AUSTRALIAN EXECUTIVE President: PETER MCBREARTY, The Langham, Melbourne
In November 2016, the Victorian members of Les Clefs d’Or held their 21st Concierge and Hospitality Ball at the Palladium Ballroom at Crown Melbourne. The theme of the Ball was ‘Secret Garden’ and this produced some interesting costumes including a garden gnome, a leprechaun and a Jamie Durie-lookalike! The ball was a great success with both a record attendance of 611 people and a record amount raised for our charity, Bailey House. We were also pleased to present the winner of the Alfred Jasinski Award, which is open to concierge, doormen and porters in the Melbourne hotel community. The well deserved winner was Preston Forsyth from Crown Towers. A great night was had by all and we look forward to this year’s ball with anticipation! ■
Several of Melbourne’s concierge were invited by Grayline to a tour of the Mornington Peninsula. We had the chance to try our hand at picking strawberries, sampling cider at Mock Red Hill, wine tasting at The Cups Estate and to finish off the day a very relaxing tour of Peninsula Hot Springs. ■
JR Duty Free on Swanston Street recently hosted a night to show us their new collections. Several concierge went along to sample what was on display, including some of the Henschke wine collection. Everyone enjoyed seeing the new collections and many of us were wishing for holidays, so that we could shop there! ■

Not only does it have a huge array of opals and jewellery for sale, but it also shows how opals came to be formed over millions of years and how they are mined today. As you enter you are surrounded by dioramas of Australia’s outback and then taken through the opal story, unfolding through time from the dinosaur age to modern day opal production.
