WELCOME TO MELBOURNE March is a wonderful time to be in Melbourne. There is truly something for everyone this month. Events abound in March, with everything from Moomba and the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, through to the Australian Grand Prix, Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (page 10). Fantastic productions are playing at every major theatre in March, so you can see for yourself why Melbourne is the theatre capital of Australia. There’s “The Full Monty” at the National Theatre, “Kinky Boots” at Her Majesty’s Theatre, “Ladies in Black” at the Regent Theatre, and the Broadway sensation “The Book of Mormon” is playing at the Princess Theatre (page 22). A wonderfully hilarious production of the English hit “The Play That Goes Wrong” is on at the Comedy Theatre. We spoke to the show’s director, Sean Turner, about this entertaining and very funny play (page 16). If all these options are tiring you out, escape the city for a relaxing day in the Yarra Valley. Mary O’Brien gives us her top picks for a splendid day spent soaking up the Yarra Valley vibes (page 14). However you choose to spend your time here in Melbourne, we hope you have a superb stay!

YARRA VALLEY VIBES
VALLEY VIBES
Here’s the pick of things to do for one perfect day in the Yarra Valley, writes Mary O’Brien. THE YARRA VALLEY
is where Melburnians like to play. About 60 minutes from the city, the suburbs peter out, replaced by green rolling hills dotted with vines, restaurants, walking trails, farm gates and pretty villages just Balgownie. waiting to be discovered. Much of Victoria’s best produce is grown here, the cool climate wines are top notch and Sunday lunch is an institution. Of course, no visit is complete without calling into Healesville Sanctuary where you can get up close and personal with koalas, dingoes and platypus.
Brunch—Coombe Farm Once mysteriously hidden behind its giant cypress hedge, Coombe Farm, Dame Nellie Melba’s old estate in Coldstream, is now open to the public. You can explore the century-old 2.8-hectare gardens of Australia’s famous opera singer followed by morning tea, or instead marvel at the Louis Vuitton luggage and opera

memorabilia at the small gallery after brunch in the conservatory restaurant. And, yes, peach Melba (named after Dame Nellie) is on the dessert menu. Coombe Farm wines can be tasted at the cellar door. Book ahead for garden tours. coombeyarravalley.com.au
Morning—Healesville Sanctuary Morning— Steal a magic moment with Australia’s native animals at Healesville Sanctuary, which is set on 32 hectares of bushland. Sort the platypus facts from fiction at the glass tank where the keepers interact with the little creatures. An elevated boardwalk helps you to spot the koalas among the Healesville Sanctuary. gum trees. Wade with the platypus, pat the wombat or marvel at cockatoos in flight. Visit the wildlife health centre, which treats more than 1,500 sick animals every year. zoo.org.au/healesville
YARRA VALLEY VIBES
Lunch—Giant Steps Add some hipster cred to your day by calling into Giant Steps restaurant/winery in Healesville. It’s a beautifully designed, large-scale, industrial-style, winery bistro with a wood-fired pizza oven. Opened in 2006, like its wine it has aged well. You can watch the winemaking process through a huge glass wall. Graze on some bites or opt for a main course with suggested wine matches. Watch out for the new Giant Steps bakery and coffee house, Habituel, opening soon. Also new, next door Brown Brothers (who have bought the Innocent Bystander wines) are opening a cellar door and pizzeria. Book ahead at Giant Steps to avoid the queues. giantstepswine.com.au
Afternoon—Four Pillars distillery
Four Pillars. Photo: Mary O’Brien.
Wander through Healesville, past the charming old Healesville Hotel, jewellery and homewares shops to the other end of town. Here the award-winning gin distillers, Four Pillars, has opened a tasting room. The distillery, which started with a crowd-funding campaign in 2013, has grown from a single still in a Warrandyte warehouse to this cool, well-designed joint on the back of the gin boom. Learn how gin is made from the knowledgeable staff and enjoy a paddle of four gins with a tonic. Do take home the breakfast negroni marmalade (a by-product of the distilling process), it’s delicious. fourpillarsgin.com.au
Late afternoon—Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery Those with kids, or those with a sweet tooth, will want to take a break at Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery. Inside you’ll find hundreds of chocolate treats surrounded by a Willie Wonkastyle madness while outside fans queue for the many flavoured
ice-creams. Watch the chocolatiers at work, indulge in some free samples and learn the secrets of chocolate making. Plus, there’s a café and spacious grounds. yvci.com.au Yarra Valley Chocolaterie. Photo: Mary O’Brien.
Dinner— Balgownie Estate
A five-minute drive away, you can check into Balgownie Estate for the night. Vine views, luxurious spa treatments, cellar door and award-winning restaurant: Balgownie ticks all the boxes. Swim in the heated pool, explore the walks around the estate or indulge in a special treatment at the onsite Natskin spa. Drop into the cellar door and compare the very different wines from Balgownie’s Yarra Valley and Bendigo vineyards. Dinner at Rae’s restaurant competes with views of the vine-covered hills. Note: kangaroo is one of the tempting main-course options. balgownieestate.com.au
Also try: Tarrawarra Estate winery and museum of art (Yarra Glen), Piggery café and bakery (Sherbrooke), Watts River Brewing (Hunter Road, Healesville) and Global Ballooning’s early morning hot-air balloon rides.
Festival Fun
Boutique vineyards, big-gun wineries, local brewers, gourmet food producers and food trucks will turn out in force for the first Yarra Valley Wine and Food Festival on 1–2 April. Rochford Wines will host live music (Chunky Jam and Lisa Edwards), “wine laneways”, a farmers’ market, cooking demos and wine masterclasses on its lawns. yarravalleywineandfoodfestival.com.au

INTERVIEW
AFTER WOWING AUDIENCES around the world it’s Melbourne’s turn to experience the ‘disaster’ that is “The Play That Goes Wrong”. And the show’s director, Sean Turner, is confident it will be a hit. “We have taken the show to a number of countries around the world and audiences have loved it,” said Turner, who has come from the UK show to direct the Australian production. The show continues to play to packed audiences in the UK and makes its debut on Broadway this month. Speaking a week before its official Melbourne opening, Turner’s love of the play comes to the fore.

INTERVIEW
“It really is an entertaining, fun play which I think is one of the reasons why it’s so popular,” he explains. “It’s an escape from everything that’s happening in the world and is great entertainment for the whole family. It’s just so wonderful to hear and see people of all ages and nationalities continually laughing out loud. “The play itself is also a Cinderella story.” The show is the brainchild of ensemble members of Mischief Theatre, an improv theatre company set up in 2008 by a group of graduates from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. The play was first presented as an improvised show in Edinburgh. After more work it opened as the “Murder Before Christmas” in 2012 in the Old Red Lion theatre pub. Further modifications saw it open in the West End and the rest, as they say, is history.
It’s won numerous awards including the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy 2015, BroadwayWorld UK Winner for Best New Play 2015 and WhatsOnStage Award Winner for Best New Comedy. “The Play That Goes Wrong” tells of The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society who are attempting to put on a 1920s murder mystery, ‘Murder at Haversham Manor’, but as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong...does. The result is a play awash with accident-prone thespians, lost props, fluffed lines, bungled entrances and falling scenery. Critics have described it as divinely daft, gloriously preposterous and finely-tuned farce and slapstick delivered with split-second timing and ambitious daring. Turner believes the physical comedy and slick choreography of the play are amongst the reasons for its worldwide success.
“The physical comedy transcends language and age barriers,” he explains. “The show is also very British in its humour and pays homage to the greats of British comedy.” Then there’s the plot. “We do have a tendency to love revelling in other people’s misfortune and there’s plenty of that in the play,” Turner explains. “At the same time the characters are so loveable the audience is desperate to see them succeed.” Given the nature of the play, the ability to be silly and improvise were key components in the selection of the Australian cast. That cast includes Brooke Satchwell, Darcy Brown, Francine Cain, Adam Dunn, Luke Joslin, George Kemp, Jordan Prosser, Nick Simpson-Deeks and Tammy Weller. James Marlowe, who is an original cast member from the West End production of the play, also stars. Turner is extremely pleased with how rehearsals have been progressing with the actors being taken out of their comfort zones, working on their clowning techniques and generally ‘being silly.’ He can’t wait to see the reaction of Melbourne crowds. “If I see people laughing and coming out of the theatre happy and saying they had a great time then to me the play is a great success,” he says. When not rehearsing, Turner, who is in Australia for the first time, has been exploring Melbourne’s theatre and music scene and attractions such as Southbank, St Kilda Beach and Queen Victoria Market. “The cast has been showing me around the city and it’s been fantastic exploring the city—it’s a great city to explore on foot.” n “The Play That Goes Wrong” is on at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre, 240 Exhibition Street, Melbourne, until 26 March. ‘The Book of Mormon’ Wows Audiences
The award-winning “The Book of Mormon” is playing to packed houses at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre. The politically incorrect, satirical and extremely funny musical tells the story of two newly trained Mormon missionaries who are sent to a Ugandan village to spread their religion’s teachings. Elder Price (Ryan Bondy) is polite, devoted, extremely confident and ambitious. He’s less than happy to be going to Africa and also not too thrilled with his ‘partner’, Elder Cunningham (A.J. Holmes). Cunningham is ‘socially challenged’, clumsy, a compulsive liar and is just looking for a friend. Finding converts among the war-lord controlled, impoverished, disease-ravaged inhabitants of the village to which they are assigned proves more difficult than anticipated. After Elder Price has a crisis of faith it’s up to the hapless Elder Cunningham to save the villagers’ souls. He finds an ally in Nabulungi (Zahra Newman) daughter of the village’s chief Mafala (Bert LaBonte). Excellent performances from all cast members, many funny lines and big musical numbers brilliantly choreographed and performed by an enthusiastic ensemble ensures “The Book of Mormon” lives up to the hype that surrounds it. “John”.
The Melbourne Theatre Company is staging two plays during March including “John”, a new work from Pulitzer Prizewinning playwright Annie Baker. Described as a ghost tale, love story and dark comedy, the play tells of Jenny and Elias who arrive late one evening at a kitschy, civil war-themed B&B in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Awkward and harried, they are a couple on the edge. It’s a feeling exacerbated by the
sensation they’re being watched. Not just by Mertis and her eccentric friend Genevieve, but by the countless dolls and figurines that occupy their spooky lodgings. This might not be the right place, or the right company, for Jenny and Elias to mend their fraying relationship. Opening on 4 March is Brian Friel’s renowned play “Faith Healer”, where characters take turns wrestling with the past, proving that memory can be as unreliable, and as contradictory, as faith. Francis Hardy works his magic, curing the sick and giving strength to the weak. His powers are real or so he says, and sometimes believes. He can tell you of nights when miracles were conjured as fast as he could place his touch. But that was long ago and his powers are far less reliable these days. More of a mystery now is why his embittered wife and hapless manager still put such faith in him after all that’s happened. “John”, until 25 March, Fairfax Studio, Arts Centre Melbourne, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne. “Faith Healer” from 4 March, Southbank Theatre, The Sumner, 140 Southbank Boulevard, Southbank. 8688 0800. mtc.com.au

It brings together the most requested acts of the past decade, revamped with striking costumes, mesmerising special effects and serrated edge comedy. “Resurrection” blends music production acts, optical illusion, animatronic sculpture and rock-circus, with a song list that moves across the AM dial from Arctic Monkeys to Blondie. Add a dangerously talented cast that look like they’ve been attacked with a bedazzler by a drag queen stylist and you start to get the picture. It’s flashy, kitsch hysteria, with no act too audacious and no heel too high. Tickets include dinner, show, ghost train ride and the amazing new simulated graveyard experience. Charles Blackman: ‘Schoolgirls’ at Heide A new exhibition at Heide Museum of Modern Art reunites Charles Blackman’s renowned work “Schoolgirls” for the first time. Blackman produced the “Schoolgirl” series between 1952 and 1955, sealing his reputation as a significant painter of modern life in the post-war era. Through his evocative depictions of uniformed, often solitary schoolgirls in urban settings pervaded by menacing undertones, Blackman explored the themes of alienation, vulnerability and innocence under threat. As well as reuniting many of the major paintings for the first time, the exhibition also includes key works created alongside the series, displaying them with related drawings, prints, rare three dimensional pieces and original archival material from Heide’s extensive Charles Blackman papers. STREET OF STYLE ENJOY COLLINS STREET’S STUNNING ARCHITECTURE, AND FASCINATING HISTORY, AS YOU SNAP UP STYLISH BARGAINS AND TERRIFIC TREATS. COLLINS STREET exudes style and
glamour. It’s a boulevard of chic designer shopping, five-star hotels, exclusive jewellers, grand heritage buildings, churches, theatres and private clubs. It’s Melbourne’s premier commercial streetscape with a number of Australia’s largest corporations calling Collins Street home and it has also been the setting for some of Australia’s best known paintings. While there have been many changes over the years with the construction of
a number of modern buildings, its fine nineteenth-century heritage is still strongly evident. Then there are the wonderful plane trees, which line the street looking particularly stunning at night under lights. One of the reasons for Collins Street’s continual appeal is its ability to change with the times. Since 1837 it has been rebuilt several times. It’s also been extended—the last occurring with the continuation of the street across Spencer Street railway lines and into Docklands.
28 WHERE MELBOURNE I MARCH 2017 I wheretraveler.com
However what hasn’t changed is the street’s appeal as both a business and leisure hub. A Collins Street address is still coveted by major businesses and professionals. The Regent and Athenaeum Theatres continue to attract theatregoers from around the world while worshippers flock to its three historic churches— the Collins Street Baptist Church, St Michael’s Uniting Church and Scots' Church.

Seal colony views from the Ecoboat tour.
Nature delights at
Phillip Island ONE OF THE BEST ways to spend an autumn night is to watch Phillip Island’s amazingly cute little penguins come ashore from a day’s fishing and waddle to their sand dune burrows. Fortunately there are many different ways to see this very appealing natural phenomenon as the Phillip Island Nature Parks offers seven options catering for all budgets and interests. These range from general viewing (that is sitting on stands on the beach watching the penguins leave the water) to exclusive ranger led tours. Having experienced a number of these tours one of the newer options— Underground Viewing—has become one of my favourites. Not only does it offer wonderful views of the penguins but it’s also protected from the elements! Built below the newly constructed Penguin Plus viewing stand, this bunker style building features a

25-metre viewing window which looks out at ground level onto the path many of the penguins take from the water to their burrows. Watching the reaction of the hundreds of penguins taking the path to the window was fascinating. Some ignored it, some came up very close for a look and a couple even bumped into it, ensuring some magical penguin viewing experiences. A ranger explained what we could expect before the arrival of the first penguins and then walked around the group explaining the behaviours we were seeing. Twenty minutes after the arrival of the first penguins we could leave the bunker and head up to the Penguin Plus stands which meant we could hear the many and varied noises the penguins were making. They are a noisy bunch! Given numbers on Underground Viewing are limited to 70 it’s a good idea

to book early. The same advice applies to all penguin watching options as demand is extremely high. The new viewing area is one of several new initiatives at Phillip Island over the last year or so. Another is the Antarctic Journey, located at the Nobbies. It uses numerous interactive and immersive experiences to explain and explore Antarctica. A joint venture between Phillip Island Nature Parks and WWF-Australia, the exhibition includes numerous hands-on activities and a multimedia experience. Together with some great audio-visual footage of Antarctica, this area also features impressive ‘augmented reality’ technology, which creates the illusion of being able to touch a penguin, stroke a seal and see a killer whale up close. Tickets to the Antarctic Journey can be purchased individually or as part of the four park super pass. The pass also includes entry to the Penguin Parade, the Koala Conservation Centre where you can see koalas close up in their natural habitat and the historic Churchill Island. Phillip Island is around 90 minutes from Melbourne. There are numerous accommodation options on the island while tour bus companies run daily tours. For further information on Phillip Island phone 5951 2800 or visit penguins.org.au
DAYLESFORD EXPLORE
DAYLESFORD’S MAGICAL WATERS ‘TAKING THE WATERS’ has long been a favourite pastime of visitors to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs. Given the towns and surrounding areas have Australia’s richest concentration of mineral springs it’s easy to see why. However, there’s a lot more to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs than magical waters. Wonderful food, fascinating shops and galleries and interesting attractions are just some of the many delights on offer. Just the same, any visit should include a mineral water experience and there’s no better place than the Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa. The original Edwardian bathhouse in the Mineral Springs Reserve, built approximately 1895, has undergone a $13 million makeover and now boasts more than 30 wet and dry treatment rooms, making it one of the largest spas in the country. It offers such indulgences as a large mineral relaxation pool and private 100% pure mineral water baths, aroma steam treatment room, Vichy rooms, a large relaxation lounge and its very own Hepburn Pavilion Café. The curative effects of mineral water, salt water and steam provide the ultimate in therapeutic relaxation in the exclusive Sanctuary wing. The Sanctuary includes

the Aroma Steam Room, Salt Therapy Pool, Relaxation Pool, Spa Couches submerged beneath mineral water and an extensive relaxation deck. You can also choose from an array of treatments including indulgent 100% pure private mineral baths, therapeutic and relaxation massages, organic facials, and a selection of indulgent spa rituals. Experienced spa goers will appreciate the sophistication of their professional practitioners and extensive treatment menu. While in the Mineral Springs Reserve, drop into the Hepburn Pavilion Café for a late breakfast or a light lunch made with fresh local ingredients. The Hepburn Pavilion Café has been offering hospitality to locals and visitors alike since 1908 and provides an atmospheric environment for a meal, or fabulous coffee and cake, before or after your Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa experience.
Not far from the bathhouse is another of the region’s popular attractions, Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm. Here you can learn about the lavender and olives grown on the property, wander around herb, cottage and potage gardens and buy locally made goods in the shop. These goods make great presents, especially if you’re looking for something uniquely Australian. Indeed, there’s plenty of great retail therapy available in the area. You’ll find everything from great art at galleries such as The Convent to Alpaca Passion, which sells alpaca-made products. While Daylesford is an easy day trip from Melbourne (it takes around 90 minutes), it’s worth staying a few days. Then you can take full advantage of its many delights. EXPLORE BALLARAT
BALLARAT Escape the big smoke and head to historic Ballarat this month for art and architecture. OVER THE HILLS, but not far away, is an enticing pot of gold calling out for you to come and play. Ballarat, just 115km from Melbourne and easily accessible by train, is the historically rich and culturally warm city just waiting for you to explore. Art and architecture are abundant in Ballarat and its historic villages, such as Clunes, Buninyong and Creswick, and they enrich the region’s ambience. Couple the striking streetscapes with award-winning food and wine outlets and Ballarat will tempt you to linger a little longer. Of course you can fit a lot into one day—but why not make a night (or several) of it? Stay in a rural retreat, fantastic family caravan park, or indulge in one of the city’s grand accommodation options. So, let curiosity get the better of you— jump in the car, step onto the train, or get on-board a bus—and visit this handsome city in all its golden glory.
FAMILY ATTRACTIONS Sovereign Hill, an internationally acclaimed tourist attraction, brings to life the colour and excitement of Australia’s 1850s gold rush. It’s just like stepping back in time to gold rush Ballarat—from the hustle and bustle of Main Street where costumed
ladies and gents parade their new-found wealth, to the excitement of the diggings where visitors can pan for real gold! There’s also an underground mine tour, a spectacular $150,000 gold pour, the Redcoat soldiers who fire their powerful muskets, and much more. By night, entertainment continues at Sovereign Hill with the multi-million dollar sound-and-light show, “Blood on the Southern Cross”—the legendary story of the 1854 Eureka Rebellion. Convenient on-site accommodation is available at Sovereign Hill Hotel. No matter what time of year you visit, Sovereign Hill will come alive with the sights and sounds of the goldfields—and you might even strike it rich in your search for gold! sovereignhill.com.au If it’s animals you love, then enjoy interactive play with some of Australia’s most-loved creatures at the Ballarat Wildlife Park. Hand-feed more than 100 freeroaming kangaroos and emus, cuddle koalas and wombats, see Tasmanian devils, and brave the reptile house with its crocodiles and snakes. wildlifepark.com.au Kryal Castle is Ballarat’s land of medieval adventure—and it’s fit for all ages to explore. tales, be entertained and thrilled in the Torture Museum, and witness the specialeffects dungeon and the dramatic main arena shows. You will be enchanted by the story of the Land of Kryal, all set in the real-life castle on the hill. kryalcastle.com.au Another world-class attraction in Ballarat is the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka (MADE). M.A.D.E is a digitallyimmersive, state-of-the-art museum. With the evocative 158-year-old Eureka flag as its centrepiece, M.A.D.E’s interactive exhibitions explore the past and future of democracy—looking at culture, civics, history and citizenship. made.org Or, if you want to see the works— why not bundle the four above-mentioned attractions together to save 15 per cent on entry? Purchase the ‘Ballarat Pass’, which is available from the Ballarat Visitor Information Centre at Town Hall, 225 Sturt Street and enjoy other bonus offers around the vibrant regional city too. INDULGE THE SENSES Ballarat’s picturesque Lake Wendouree is famed for its recreation opportunities and a chance to get up close with nature. It’s the former site of the 1956 Summer Olympics. The Lake is just a stone’s throw from the iconic Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Home to the avenue of Prime Minister busts, marble statues, and huge shady trees—

Or, if it’s food for the soul you are after—fulfil every need at gourmet patisseries, charming cellar doors, or award-winning first-class restaurants. CULTURALLY INFORMATIVE Founded in 1884, the Art Gallery of Ballarat is the oldest and largest regional gallery in Australia. Home to one of the most comprehensive collections of Australian paintings in the nation, works featured here are just a small selection from a holding that extends from convict artists of Van Diemen’s Land to the present day. General entry is free and special exhibitions are regularly alternated. EXHIBITIONS AT THE ART GALLERY OF BALLARAT Art Gallery of Ballarat is staging several exhibitions this month. From 25 March see The Guirguis New Art Prize 2017 (GNAP17), a $20,000 national, acquisitive, biennial, contemporary Art Prize, which showcases a selection of Australia’s most exciting contemporary artists. The Prize has been initiated and supported by
local Ballarat surgeon Mark Guirguis, and administered by Federation University Australia’s Arts Academy. Finalists include Abdul Abdullah (NSW), Erin Coates (WA), Brian Robinson (QLD), Alistair Rowe (WA) and many more. From 1 April see “Harold Freedman: Artist For The People”. This exhibition presents the graphic work of Harold Freedman, a Melbourne-born artist and illustrator who was appointed State Artist of Victoria, the only such appointment ever made in Australia. Freedman was responsible for some major mural commissions at the old Spencer Street Station, the Tullamarine Airport arrival hall and the State Government Offices
in Geelong. Notable among Freedman’s output is the work he undertook for the Victorian Railways after the Second World War, including the poster series, “Men of Service and Women of Service”. Both exhibitions are free. The gallery is located at 40 Lydiard Street North, Ballarat and is open daily from 10am to 5pm. IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING that any restaurant established and operated under the auspices of renowned chef Neil Perry has an enviable pedigree to begin with. However while it’s more or less a given that each restaurant will share similar high standards of service and have a strong emphasis on sourcing premium produce, at the same time each also has its own very distinct identity, focus and flavour. Rosetta Ristorante is Neil Perry’s Italian flagship, and flies that flag proudly and to great effect, right down to the house made ricotta and also the pasta produced by hand onsite by their pasta specialists, including a venerable Italian grandmother who is every bit as authentic as the pasta she creates. Located on the waterfront promenade beside the Yarra River, Rosetta offers both inside dining and also the opportunity to dine on a heated terrace with views over the river, along with the option of a private dining room. The immediate impression on entering is one of understated elegance, with chandeliers, paintings and black and white photographs on the wall, and high quality, well-spaced seating ensuring a comfortable dining experience. Restaurant manager Madeleine Morgan oversees a team of highly capable staff who are attentive and informative, both with regard to the dining menu and also the extensive wine list. The menu itself is equally extensive, and likely to appeal to a broad swathe of diners, be they in search of purely Italian dishes, or wishing to enjoy a course from the woodfired oven or charcoal grill. Almost mandatory as a selection from the Antipasti menu is the Ricotta Fresca, creamy house made ricotta with marinated capsicum, anchovy, garlic and capers—irrefutable proof that simple premium ingredients are often the surest recipe for success. Similarly, charcoal grilled prawns (Gamberi) served with orange gremolata and lardo are a picture of simplicity on the plate, but prove to be delicious succulent morsels, redolent of their time on the smoky grill. Other smaller dishes may include meatballs oven baked in piquant tomato sauce, veal tongue with tuna mayonnaise and anchovy toast, charcoal grilled squid with extra virgin olive oil, chilli and lemon, or perhaps beef carne cruda with chilli pecorino and cured egg yolk. Choosing a main course from those on offer is a delightfully challenging process, with whole fish and fowl available from the wood fired oven, a wide array of pasta and risotto, fresh meat and seafood from the charcoal grill, a range of Italian favourites and even (with 24 hours notice) the option of a roasted whole goat’s shoulder from the wood fired oven. A lack of choice is very definitely not an issue at Rosetta. One popular pasta dish is the agnolotti with roast rabbit, veal and pork—although equally tempting are the gnocchi with braised lamb shanks and ricotta salata, and the tagliolini with spanner crab, garlic, chilli and parsley. Grilled duck breast with roasted blood plums, and Sicilian olive salsa arrives perfectly pink and is every bit as delectable as it looks, while Corner Inlet King George whiting from the grill is sourced by Rosetta’s regular fisherman, and the steaks on offer include a Cape Grim grass fed traditional (and enormous) Bistecca Fiorentina, best suited either to a couple, or a serious fan of excellent beef, with a very substantial appetite. To finish there are some excellent Italian cheeses on the menu, however diners may well find it difficult to forgo desserts such as pistachio cannoli with cherry compote and olive oil cake, the frozen chocolate, peanut and coconut semi freddo, the tiramisu, and another simple, but subtly delicious dish—the buffalo yoghurt panna cotta with poached apricot amaretti crumble. Ultimately Rosetta is just as satisfying as their panna cotta, and their resulting popularity means that reservations are very definitely advisable. MELBOURNE VISITOR SHUTTLE The Melbourne Visitor Shuttle is a great way to see Melbourne’s attractions. Hop on and hop off the bus at any of the stops at key city destinations. The shuttle runs between 9.30am–4.30pm daily (excluding Christmas Day). The complete trip takes approximately an hour and a half and includes an informative on-board commentary as you travel around Melbourne. Tickets cost $10 for up to two days for adults. Children nine years and under are free. MELBOURNE PUBLIC TRANSPORT Extending from the central business district in all directions, Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses can help you explore every corner of this city. Public transport is simple to use in Melbourne as one ticket gives you flexible travel between the three modes of travel. Train and tram services operate between 5am and midnight, Monday to Thursday, with extended hours to around 1am on Friday and Saturday nights. On Sunday, trains and trams operate 7am–11pm. Many of Melbourne’s bus routes have been upgraded to run from 6am–9pm Monday to Friday, 8am–9pm Saturday and 9am–9pm Sunday. Public Transport Victoria Public Transport Victoria is your central stop for information on public transport services, fares, tickets and initiatives. Up-to-date information is available via the website, call centre and mobile applications. Enter your origin and destination into PTV’s online journey planner for travel anywhere in Victoria and you’ll be provided with a tailored travel plan including maps, connections and estimated travel times.

To plan your journey visit ptv.vic.gov.au or call 1800 800 007, 6am–midnight daily. myki myki is the smart card ticketing system in metropolitan Melbourne and selected regional towns. myki is a durable and re-usable smart card that stores value to pay your public transport fare. myki users enjoy an integrated ticketing system that works across the state on trains, trams and buses. Interstate and overseas visitors can now purchase the myki Visitor Value Pack, for travel on Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses throughout their stay. The myki Visitor Value Pack includes a myki smartcard pre-loaded with enough value for one day’s Zone 1 travel, instructions on how to use myki, an inner Melbourne tram map, a myki protective souvenir wallet, and discounts at 15 attractions worth more than $100 in savings. The myki Visitor Value Pack is available from the PTV Hub at Southern Cross Station, the Melbourne Visitor Centre at Federation Square and SkyBus terminals at Melbourne Airport and Southern Cross Station. Free Tram Zone The Free Tram Zone in Melbourne’s CBD includes the area of the Queen Victoria Market, Victoria Harbour in Docklands, Spring Street, Flinders Street Station and Federation Square. Travel on trams within this zone is free, and you won’t need a myki, however, if your journey starts or finishes outside the boundaries of the Free Tram Zone, you must touch on your myki at the reader in the normal way to make sure you have a valid ticket.

LES CLEFS D’OR
LES CLEFS D’OR to the traditional circus acts, while still retaining their own unique take on circus. It has one of the funniest clown acts I have seen in one of their shows, but the highlight was the devils’ on the wheel of death. It was absolutely thrilling and an enjoyable night for the concierge society.

Concierge tour Emporium Melbourne.
“The Book of Mormon”, the latest production from Broadway, has arrived in Melbourne at the Princess Theatre. Concierge were invited to a preview performance of the show, which is by the creators of the TV show “South Park”. The story of two young missionaries and their mission to Africa sounds like the making of a drama but it is in fact a fantastic comedy musical. It is sure to be a big hit in Melbourne, and I highly recommend going to see it. ■
Concierge were also invited to preview Cirque du Soleil under the big top at Flemington showgrounds. The current show is “KOOZA”, and it’s an homage ■
One of Melbourne’s only microbreweries, James Squire, recently changed its name to The Crafty Squire. Concierge from around the area were invited to see the new changes and sample some of the local menu. We were able to taste some meals that were very local indeed. The very Australian menu featured dishes made with crocodile meat, emu and kangaroo, and we had some great beers to wash them down, made onsite in their own brewery. ■
Emporium Melbourne shopping centre invited concierge on a guided tour of some of their stores and new innovations. The emphasis was on visiting stores from around the world showcasing clothing, jewellery and homewares. The highlight for many of us had to be the Golden Gaytime pop up store in Topshop. Yum! ■
