o matter how much Miamians may brag about the city's pictureperfect weather, alluring beaches and the bump-and-grinding nightlife, there is also a quieter side to Miami. For starters, we have a thriving cultural scene, thanks in large part to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and the Pérez Art Museum Miami. In March, the cultural landscape will change once again, as the highly-anticipated Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science debuts in Museum Park. If you are looking for a few low-key experiences while in town, go museum-hopping in May. During the month, quite a few museums offer discounted admission, as part of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Miami Museum Month promotion. And then there’s the fi lm scene. After the resounding success of this year’s Miami Film Festival in March, it got me thinking how the venues have all changed in the past decade. I remember when there was only one or two indie movie theaters playing foreign fi lms. Then, the Coral Gables Art Cinema opened in 2010 and the following year, O Cinema launched in Wynwood. The indie fi lm scene started to boom. Now, O Cinema has two more locations—Miami Beach and Miami Shores—and was the place to see the best picture Oscar winning fi lm, "Moonlight." If you are visiting in June and the occasional rain shower pops up, I encourage you to explore the fi lm scene. And if you prefer cult and pop movie classics (think "Rocky Horror Picture Show" or "Scarface"), the Secret Celluloid Society screens them at O Cinema. Until then, "hasta la vista, baby!"

A dose of Cuban nostalgia at Hoy Como Ayer FABIO DIAZ VILELA, a journalism student at the Universidad de la Habana, left Cuba for Miami at age 19. Besides leaving his grandmother and friends behind, he left his country and traditions. After working at famed restaurants Versailles and Larios on the Beach, Díaz set his sights on opening his own business. Hoy Como Ayer (today like yesterday) in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood was born. More than fifteen years later, the cozy lounge continues to serve as a window into Cuban culture, with a who’s who of Latin artists. This quaint hotspot, a haven for son (a Cuban salsa-style dance), romantic boleros and other Latin dances is also a magnet for celebrities like Pitbull, Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez. Wynwood Miami is a neighborhood defined by the transient nature of the street art that made it famous. By Rebecca McBane

26

WHE RE I M AY / J U N E 2017

COOLNESS HAS A LIFECYCLE. “What makes money isn't what's cool and what's cool isn't what makes you money. Basically, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't,” says artist and resident Wynwood tour guru Ryan “the Wheelbarrow” Ferrell. “But Wynwood is cool at walking that line.” Trendy neighborhoods have a predictable lifecycle. First, it's the place no one wants to be, allowing artists to move in and claim it. Before long, if what they're creating is good, someone notices and capitalism sweeps in and does its thing. Soon, the neighborhood becomes a victim of its own success and property values sky rocket, chasing away the very artists that made the area cool in the first place. Before that happens, there's a moment where everything sort of plateaus. And that’s (hopefully) where Wynwood is now

and where it will manage to stay. And it just might, thanks to the nature of the art that made it famous. Once, a semi-abandoned garment district of derelict warehouses, in 2009 Tony Goldman's development company opened the Wynwood Walls to local street artists, along with 30 or so other buildings surrounding it. “He [Goldman] was the one that built the trust,” says Ferrell. Referring to the trust built over the years, between artists and Goldman Properties. Ferrell isn't a traditional street artist, though he's done a few murals. He's a screen-printing artist specializing in what he calls “live fashion vandalism.” Together with friend and fellow artist Pedro AMOS, he runs Miami's Best Graffiti Guide, the official walking tour for the Wynwood Walls. Ferrell moved to the area in 2003, six

Street art is, by its very nature, ephemeral ... you leave your mark on the neighborhood and then the neighborhood leaves its mark on you. Nothing stays the same. years before Goldman would appear on the scene. “Before the Walls, from the general public's stand point this place was dangerous. Once they opened the Wynwood Walls, you saw the whole mentality shift. He was that influential force that gave it that sexiness like he did with South Beach in the 80s.” Rick “Abstrk” Mastrapa is a local street artist from way back. Born and raised in Miami, the Cuban-American was once told by a teacher at the Design and Architecture High School in Miami, that graffiti is not art and that it never will be. Now, he makes a living filling public spaces with his designs. For him, the continuing success of Wynwood is ineffably tied to the acceptance of graffiti and street art as legitimate art. When asked if Wynwood is still a cool place for artists to be and work, or if it's just for tourists, he says it’s about balance. “It could be both. You still have artists from around the world that are going to come [here] but of course, it’s not as raw and as exciting as it was at the beginning when it was nothing but artists. Back then artists like Quake, in the early 90s, they were doing giant murals trackside not because it was 'Wynwood' but because it was an area with a lot of crime and no one cared what was going on there." "Before we were complaining that nobody accepted this as art and now we’re complaining because they are," he remarks. Born and raised in Miami, Tatiana "Tati" Suarez doesn't come from the street art world, but after her graffiti writer friends kept encouraging her to get out there, she did her first mural inside the old RC Cola plant (550 NW 24 St., Miami) in 2009. “I remember how different it was. The wall I was painting was actually bare. It was virgin concrete and you don’t find that there anymore,” she says. “I was invited to paint inside the

Wynwood Walls last year, which was a really big deal and an honor. When I started, I never thought I’d see myself in those walls and now those artists are my peers and friends.” The success of Wynwood is a doubleedged sword, she says. It's brought a lot of good to the neighborhood, but also the bad. She calls them culture vultures, companies that don't really understand the art but want to sponsor murals because it's trending. It becomes a battle between making a living as an artist and preserving what makes it art in the first place. “But I think it still has that artsy vibe andit’s kind of grimy,” says Suarez. “It hasn’t completely become a tourist trap but I know certain nights to avoid it. There are still beautiful murals, you just have to find them.” Ferrell agrees. “To me the most beautiful thing is that it coexists,” says Ferrell. “You can have that illegal [art] right next to the sponsored and most of it is horrible and then you get this one guy (Eduardo Kobra) from Brazil that’s amazing and you see his art popping out. Wynwood is one of those spots where, if you want to make a living off of it, this is a neighborhood where you can. But it's all in the approach of how you go about doing it. If you do the Mountain Dew mural with the logo, expect every vandal to go after it.” Street art is, by its very nature, ephemeral. You leave your art on public walls that don't belong to you, subject to the elements, to rival artists and to bar hoppers with markers. You leave your mark on the neighborhood and then the neighborhood leaves its mark on you. Nothing stays the same for long. HISTORIC TRADITIONS Native American clothing has a long and diverse history. For many, patchwork is their family heirloom. It is an art form that began out of necessity, to survive the unforgiving swamplands, and now serves as a link to the past and as a token of pride and identity. “It’s an indigenous craft but also part of daily life,” explains Jessica Osceola, a direct descendant of the 19th century Seminole leader, Osceola. “Patchwork is very much the identity of the Seminole tribe.” Located in Hollywood, about a 20-minute drive west of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, the Seminole Tribe of Florida first created its clothing using calico and colorful appliqué ribbon. With the sewing machine’s arrival, rick-rack (narrow braid woven in a zigzag pattern) replaced appliqué ribbon in the early20th century. Today, visitors can appreciate the craft's evolution at the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum in the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation. In addition to the extensive patchwork collection, the museum also collects historical newspapers, manuscripts, baskets, dolls and military ephemera. Patchwork can also be found among the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians. Their patchwork is generally made up of bright, one-color fabric with borders framed by a series of tiny cut-outs which make up beautiful geometric designs. It's commonly incorporated into jackets, shirts, vests, dresses and quilts.

PATCHWORK NOW Just as the sewing machine allowed the Seminoles to evolve traditional patchwork, today's young natives are putting their stamp on their heritage by combining oldworld designs with modern trends. Ashley Elayne, a member of the Miccosukee tribe, takes inspiration from the

runways of New York and Paris to make her patchwork clothing. She creates custom dresses for proms and other big events. “I’ve been sewing since I was 13, but it’s probably within the last seven years that I started to do modern styles, incorporating what I see in fashion,” says the 31-year-old whose inspirations include Chanel’s play with pearls and Christian Dior’s tulle and lace. She uses floral embellishments and lace to dress the younger generation that, she says, want to look trendy while still displaying their cultural heritage. For Jessica Osceola, a Seminole artist and college professor, she prefers to stick to her roots when it comes to patchwork. "I would describe it as my grandmother's style. I am pretty true to the traditional craft," says Osceola, who learned by watching her grandmother and mother. "I am a conservative dresser. I think Alines and like the traditional feel of the color palettes," including natural dyes of red, blue and black.

#NATIVEMADE For younger Native Americans, social media has made it easier for others to access patchwork fashion; where the #NativeMade hashtag trends on Instagram. “Because of both networking and news feed updates, many people across all American Indian country have been exposed to my work,” says Krystle Billie, who sells men’s vests, women’s sheer shirts and colorful skirts on Instagram. Osceola says social media is "a good tool but not a major player." Instead, she is urging fashion designers to credit Native Americans when patchwork designs are used as a source of inspiration. The important thing, she says, is to carry on the craft. "You are voicing that you are still present and still creating.”

WHERE IN MIAMI

We’re addicted to ice cream

For more great ice cream in Miami, visit wheretraveler.com

Azucar When I really want to go fancy and find the time, my favorite ice cream shop is Azucar on Eight Street. It has all kinds of great tropical flavors of which I favor anything with mango in it. –Ron Magill, Communications Director, Zoo Miami

Sloane's - West Palm Beach I love their Cherries Jubilee–it’s 64

WHE RE I M AY / J U N E 2017

cherry ice cream with chocolate chunks and sweet black cherries. –Angela Cruz, Beauty News with Angela Cruz, @angelacruztube

Wynwood Parlor My go-to here is the “Bedrock,” two red velvet cookies with rich vanilla ice cream, rolled in Fruity Pebbles. –Gino Campodónico, Writer/Blogger, TheMannequinParty.com

Whip & Dip Urbanites have been flocking to this mom and pop ice cream shop since 1985. Homemade flavors include tropi cool mango ice cream to a pineapple sorbet. –Annie Vazquez, Fashion Writer, @TheFashionPoet

Mr. Kream When I don't buy from Publix, I go to Mr. Kream and order straight up

vanilla. I'm not into layering a bunch of stuff. If it's organic even better. –Ryan the Wheelbarrow, Miami's Best Graffiti Guides

Gigi They have the best Oreo bread pudding that's served with ice cream. They have a new flavor every day. But my favorite by far is their vanilla. –Typoe, Contemporary Artist, @typoe Typoe.com

COURTESY AZUCAR ICE CREAM COMPANY

 Local influencers weigh in on where to feed their obssession with ice cream this month. With yearround sunshine, our locals are experts in this cold treat. From classic to tropical, here's where to get your sugar fix.
