O‘ahu Adventures The Gathering Place, known as the island of O‘ahu, has many reasons for its nickname other than its obvious high density in population and, at times, bumper-to-bumper traffic on the freeway. Visitors come to O‘ahu to partake in such adventurous recreation as a hike up the Makapu‘u Trail (see pages 14 and 15). They cherish time spent with their families (pages 16 and 17). They forget about their usual food preferences and dig into local cuisine (page 18), and savor their moments with a gift or two to take home as memorabilia (page 19).

MVP I PRODUCTION

Q: How long have you been a concierge on O‘ahu? A: I have been a concierge for The Royal Hawaiian for the past 21 years. Prior to being a concierge, I started at the Sheraton Waikīkī as a secretary for Japanese sales in 1991. I’m proud to say that I’ve just made 25 years with Starwood Waikīkī. Q: Why did you become a concierge? A: I originally joined the concierge team because I needed a position that allowed me to take classes in the morning at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and work in the afternoon. However, it took me 10 years to realize that I was meant to be a concierge. In fact, I only came to this realization because of our loyal guests who would come back to the Royal year after year wearing the brightest, happiest smiles; they make my job enjoyable. As a concierge, I’m still learning every day from my guests and colleagues, and I’m growing richer every day in mind and heart. Q: What are your favorite areas/places on the island? A: I love driving the coastline from Kualoa Ranch to Kaneohe because of the gorgeous views of the Ko‘olau Mountain range and the sacred power and mana (spirit) that emanates from the cliffs. One of my favorite views is 6

from the Ka‘iwa Ridge Trail, which is known as Lanikai Pillboxes. It is well known for being one of the easiest hikes on the island and definitely one of the most scenic. Q: What’s the most popular request you’ve received recently? A: Aside from the regular popular sites— Pearl Harbor and Polynesian Cultural Center—more people around the world, from Americans to Europeans to Australians, ask for good Japanese noodle shops, which offer ramen or udon. I would have never thought that ramen would become an internationally recognized food! Japanese people, on the other hand, frequently ask where they can find the best pancakes. Q: What’s your must-have or must-do before leaving O‘ahu? A: As much as I enjoy watching beautiful sunrises from the Makapu‘u Trail, my must-do is to experience the breathtaking sunsets in Waikīkī, especially during the winter time. My must-have is a glass of Champagne at Michel’s at Colony Surf or a mai tai at House without a Key while watching the sunset. Hiroe Yanagisawa is Concierge, The Royal Hawaiian and a member of Les Clefs D’Or USA and The Concierge Association of Hawai‘i.

From a distance, one can see the 1,208-foot hiking trail that leads to the peak of Koko Head crater.

Happy Trails Hiking O‘ahu trails can be fun but be sure to take some necessary precautions before venturing up. Before you go, prepare your hiking route. Maps and directions are available at hawaiitrails.ehawaii.gov. Other measures to ensure your safety include being aware of your physical limitations, skills and energy levels; hiking with someone else; checking the weather forecast; wearing sturdy and comfortable shoes with good traction; and always stay on signed and managed trails, which are maintained and designated for public use.

DIAMOND HEAD The trail to the summit features many switchbacks that traverse the steep interior slope of the crater wall. The 560foot ascent continues up steep stairs and through a lighted tunnel. At the top, views of the pacific are endless. LANIKAI Also known as the Ka‘iwa Ridge Trail, the Lanikai Pillbox—which is a concrete guard post—hike leads to sweeping views of the

windward coast. It’s an easy slope for novices looking for exercise. KA‘ENA POINT The trail leads to Ka‘ena Point Natural Area Reserve, a remote protected area harboring some of the last vestiges of coastal sand dune habitat. MAKAPU‘U TRAIL For a relatively easy hike that boasts spectacular views, be sure to trek the Makapu‘u Lighthouse Trail. This

two-mile (round trip) hike is kid-friendly and paved, except at the very top. On the clearest of days, you can see the islands of Moloka‘i and even Maui.

The Makapu‘u Trail offers scenic views around every bend.

KOKO HEAD Once used to deliver supplies to the military bunkers atop the crater during WWII, the trail is now frequented by avid hikers who must scale more than 1,048 railroad ties— or ‘steps’— to reach the pinnacle of this landmark. w w w.wh e re t rave le r.c o m

Rum Runner

Harkening to France’s 19th century “Belle Époque,”

Vodka’s out. Rum is in. It appears as if the popularity of the dry martini has finally fizzled. And now it’s rum that mixologists are touting as the “in” cocktail at Sheraton Waikīkī’s RumFire. When RumFire opened in 2014, Sheraton hired world-renowned mixologist Francesco Lafranconi to develop the cocktail menu, which focuses on, what else, rums of different colors, spices and origins. “RumFire’s innovative setting and extensive collection has enabled me to create and develop some of the most unique and sexy cocktails on Waikīkī Beach,” Lafranconi says. “In Hawaii, rum is usually associated with tropical cocktails and drinks, such as the mai tai and pina colada, but RumFire’s exclusive collection will highlight and expand way beyond the typical Island cocktail stereotype.” Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, 2255 Kalākaua Ave., 808.921.4600, www.rumfirewaikiki.com

L’Aperitif is located inside the fine dining room of La Mer at Halekulani. “The aperitif was the very symbol of Belle Époque lifestyle that encouraged the period’s remarkable joie de vivre,” says Halekulani’s Chief Operating Officer Peter Shaindlin. “It was a time when peace and prosperity allowed the arts and sophisticated Parisian social culture to reach unprecedented heights.” Guests can sip on such libations as The Serendipity and Hemingway Old Fashioned while noshing on gourmet appetizers. lani,

The Molokai Mule definitely has some kick. But nothing like the Tradewinds Manhattan, which Jennifer Ackrill describes as a bad-day elixir. Since becoming the Top of Waikiki’s new director of mixology, the Pittsburgh native has reinvented mid-century drinks, infusing them with an island twist. “We’re bringing the craft culture to the Top,” Ackrill says. “But we want to remove the snobbery out of mixology and get back to the basics.” But there is nothing basic about Ackrill’s and fellow bartender Max Kamm’s cocktails. The Molokai Mule, for example, is a riff on the Moscow Mule, which is traditionally made with vodka, lime juice and ginger beer. The Molokai version, however, combines rum, vodka, Stirrings ginger liqueur and lime juice then topped with soda. It’s a refreshing sipper with just enough bite. Happy hours are from 4:30 to 7 p.m, and again between 9 and 11 p.m. Top of Waikiki, 2270 Kalakaua Ave., 923.3877, www.TopofWaikiki.com.

Local Snacks

Romantic Interlude

Liquid Kitchens

Fresh poke, cold shave ice, malasadas: Hawaii’s iconic snacks are one-of-a-kind. (1) Introduced by the Islands’ first Portuguese immigrants, malasadas are balls of doughy goodness that have been deep-fried and rolled in sugar. (2) Even President Obama indulges in a delicious cone of soft, sweet ice when he vacations on O‘ahu. It’s a reminder that Hawai‘i nō ka ‘oi (Hawai‘i is the best). (3) Pronounced POH-keh, poke means ‘to slice or cut,’ which is exactly what’s done to premium raw fish to turn it into one of Hawai‘i’s favorite snacks.

In a state where you can take long walks on the beach year round, take advantage of Oahu’s natural geological beauty and plan your ideal couple’s getaway. (1) Take your relationship to new heights with a private chartered helicopter tour across the island. (2) For a more ‘grounded’ experience mix up your oceanside relaxation with quality spa time unwinding with your favorite person. (3) Romance is in the air when couples stay in a private beach cottage, an ocean villa or a casual room or suite at Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore.

O‘ahu mixologists are turning their bar areas into ‘liquid kitchens,’ infusing their cocktails with fresh herbs and spices (1) At L’Aperitif at Halekulani, sip on such libations as The Serendipity and Hemingway Old Fashioned. (2) Creativity and panache describe the elixirs at Sheraton Waikīkī’s RumFire, where— surprise—rums of different colors, spices and origins dominate the menu. (3) It’s a no-brainer that one of our favorite spots to imbibe is at the Genius Lounge, a second-floor Lewers Street that’s cozy and chic, and pours a mean mojito.
