Always Remember O‘ahu may tread a few beats faster than the other islands, but its dedication to honoring past traditions has always been the backbone of its island lifestyle. Hawai‘i’s Fashion Month will share its evolution of style (pages 12-13) through the talents of local designers. Pearl Harbor will commemorate its 75th anniversary at the Pacific Aviation Museum (page 14). Check out the infamous waves of North Shore followed by a historic tour at Waimea Valley (page 16). Q: How long have you been a concierge? A: I have been a concierge for 10 years and my first position was at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental (now The Kahala Hotel & Resort). As a concierge, I believe it’s my responsibility to provide an authentic and sincere guest experience. Q: Why did you become a concierge? A: Like most hoteliers, I started at the Front Desk and navigated my way through the Front Office where I found my niche with the Concierge department. I find it fascinating to learn about different cultures while being able to share my own. Q: What are your favorite area/places on O‘ahu? A: My favorite places on O’ahu include the North Shore for its magical beaches and great local finds. One of my favorite stops while on the North Shore is Storto’s (Sandwich Shop) to pick up a sandwich for the beach. Q: What type of experience(s) do you try to provide for your guests? Even visitors who have been coming to Hawai‘i for years are surprised by the hidden gems we can offer. We know where to find the best breaks on the North Shore, the coolest shrimp shacks, incredible hikes along the Wai‘anae Range, epic ocean fishing expeditions, the most immersive cultural experiences and even the perfect place to propose. 6
Q: What do you recommend for the adventure-seeking visitor? A: For the active traveler, the adventures on land and water are endless. Nearby Kualoa Ranch—familiar to film buffs as the setting for the Jurassic Park series—offers horseback riding, mountain biking, ziplining and ATV riding through jungle terrain. On the water, whether one prefers to be on a board (surf, paddle) or in a boat (outrigger canoe, fishing vessel), Four Seasons has it covered. Fancy a bit of cliff jumping? We can arrange that too. Q: What’s the most popular request you’ve received recently? A: Some of the more popular requests have been among “Hawai’i Five-0” enthusiasts. After watching the series, they are interested in visiting locations where the filming was done. Recently, I had one guest who had a full list categorized by episode and he was determined to visit each one before leaving. Q: What’s your must-have or must-do before leaving O’ahu? A: My recommendation for any visitor would be to soak in a sunset. The sunsets here are some of the most beautiful in the world. Kawai Yamashiro is Director of Guest Services and Concierge at the Four Seasons Resort O’ahu at Ko Olina and serves as the current President of the Concierge Association of Hawai’i.

HOT ATTRACTION
Historic Moment Themed, “Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future,” the 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor marks a somber period that we should never forget. In a proclamation to recognize Pearl Harbor, Hawai‘i Gov. David Ige eloquently stated, “The December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and other airfields on the island of O‘ahu, led directly to our country’s entry into WWII. Those events changed our lives forever and triggered our resolve as a nation, our can-do attitude and an unmatched commitment to the defense of freedom.”
GALA AFFAIR As part of Pearl Harbor and in honor of its 10th anniversary, the Pacific Aviation Museum will be the site of the opening ceremonies on December 3. The evening will include cocktails, dinner, entertainment and an auction. Guests will also get a first look at newly restored aircrafts fresh out of Lt. Ted Shealy’s Restoration Shop. For more information, call 808.441.1006 or email Carol@PacificAviation Museum.org. SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY Attendees are invited to the Home of the Brave Brewseum on December 4, from 5 to 9 p.m. Event goers can take a sentimental journey through time and embrace the very sights and sounds of an era that changed the course
of history. Remember, honor and salute America’s heroes at a nostalgic evening in historic Kaka‘ako. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. www.brewseums.com. MEMORIAL PARADE On December 7, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., a parade along Kalākaua Avenue will honor the remaining Pearl Harbor survivors as the Grand Marshals will also recognize all veterans, active duty military and their families. The parade will start at Ft. DeRussy, and will end at Kapi‘olani Park. For more information, visit www.pearlharborparade.org. ANNIVERSARY DATES For a complete schedule of events from December 1-11, visit www.pearlharbor75thanniversary.com.

By the late 19th century, immigrants from all across the world ventured to the Hawaiian Islands in search of a new beginning. Chinese, Filipinos, Puerto Ricans, Koreans, Portuguese and Japanese were some of the major ethnic groups who came to share their passions in work and play. Some cultural practices have stuck, such as “omiyage” (Japanese for “gifts”), a long-standing tradition that involves bringing back gifts from a person’s travels. Here are some of our favorite local omiyage items that we recommend for your family and friends.
Specialized products from Simply Wood Studios have been handcrafted and artistically embellished.
SUGAR AND SPICE A local treat known as a li hing mui, a type of plum that is salty and sweet, is best eaten when you’re not sure what your taste buds are craving. People can attest to its eye-squinching effects but, also agree that, it’s all worth it. Try a variety of li hing mui from any local grocery store. MORNING BREW Bring home an aromatic reminder of the Islands with a package of Kona coffee.
While a 10 percent blend qualifies for the “Kona” coffee status, it’s best to buy the 100 percent version. Find your preference at any drug or grocery store. LET’S GO NUTS Indigenous to Australia, the macadamia nut has become famous in Hawai‘i since the early 20th century when farmers planted the seed as a way to help supplement coffee production. Find a variety of flavors (SPAM!) at any local drug or grocery store. SCULPT TO PERFECTION Even though this is a nonedible item in the omiyage category, it doesn’t mean it’s not deliciously appealing to the eye. Simply Wood Studios sells some of the finest wood-work masterpieces. simplywoodstudios.com

Neighborhoods DOWNTOWN HONOLULU Highlights
include the Hawaii State Capital Building, Aliiolani Hale and the highly-photographed statue of King Kamehameha and Iolani Palace. Nearby on the waterfront is the iconic Aloha Tower, once the tallest building in Honolulu that greeted arriving cruise ships.
HAWAII KAI Many visitors will pass by
this neighborhood on the way to and from Hanauma Bay. Find the original Roy’s Restaurant at the Hawaii Kai Towne Center, and a good variety of restaurants, pubs and activities at Koko Marina Center. KAILUA BEACHWith its steady breezes
and sandy shoreline, Kailua is Oahu’s windsurfing capital. Take a lesson, rent equipment or just relax in the sand and gentle surf. Located at the end of Kailua, turn right on Kalaheo Drive. Restrooms are available. kailuachamber.com. LANIKAI BEACH Lanikai’s turquoise
waters, powdered-sugar sands and swaying palms rank this Windward beach among some of the best in the world. Sheltered by a wide, protective offshore reef, this half-mile strand of beach provides ideal swimming conditions, as well as kayaking, outrigger canoeing, sailing, surfing and windsurf-
ing. During the weekdays, the beach is relatively calm, but on weekends it can become extremely crowded. With the twin Mokulua Islands in the distance (both are seabird sanctuaries), Lanikai Beach truly lives up to its translated name of “heavenly sea.”
Public Transportation THEBUS An easy, cost-effective, and
environmentally-friendly way to get around the island is via TheBus, the island’s award-winning public transportation system. Many routes depart frequently from Waikiki and stop at Oahu’s major attractions. Fares are the following: adults 17 and over: $2.50 each way, seniors 65+ and people with disability: $1 each way, youths ages 6-17, $1.25 each way. Each trip allows for one transfer. Visitors may also want to consider buying the four-day pass at $25 at ABC Stores and 7-Eleven stores. TheBus.org. For route and schedule information, call 808.848.5555.
