Experience History, Art and Fine Dining in Mount Dora A Mount Dora excursion offers something for everyone, whether it’s antique hunting, cruising on a scenic boat tour or enjoying an upscale fine-dining experience that celebrates fresh, local ingredients. By Jennie Hess

NEW ENGLAND TOWN A day in the historic lakeside town of Mount Dora can quickly change a traveler’s perspective about Central Florida. It’s as simple as cresting an unexpected Lake County hill before dipping into this charming New England-style village about 35 miles northwest of Orlando popular for its art, music and other festivals.
MODERN ART When Florida celebrity chef and James Beard Award winner Norman Van Aken tapped Mount Dora for his latest restaurant—1921 by Norman Van Aken—the excitement was palpable. Renowned for modern Florida cuisine, Aken partnered with Modernism Museum Mount Dora to showcase modern art treasures alongside his delectable dishes. Visitors can start out at the museum, home to noteworthy exhibitions like the current “esherick to NAKASHIMA,” through May. As you wander, you’ll marvel at the rich wood Nakashima bench or the Esherick spiral stair and learn more about the Studio Arts Movement and how sculpture and furniture can be one and the same. And you’ll work up an appetite.
MODERN CUISINE Just across the street, step through a small courtyard to enter 1921 by Norman Van Aken, where stunning modernist decor in a converted home (built in 1921), enhances your dining experience. Chef Van Aken calls 1921 “my love letter to Florida” reflecting “its cuisine to its art to its culture and beyond.” Favorite menu shareables range from the Smoky Maduro Plantain Flatbread with aged cheddar and pork jowl bacon to the Conch Fritters with hot pepper jelly. The Korea Town Fried Chicken with collards and mac ‘n’ cheese is a crispy, juicy palate pleaser. The signature chicken also appears on 1921’s brunch menu with waffles, Asian-spiced syrup and moonshine chutney. Fish caught fresh from Florida waters, wood-grilled ribeye, pan-roasted duck breast and other popular entrees round out the menu. Wine pairings are offered, and the 1921 cocktail menu celebrates mixology with flavors like lavender and guava—there’s even a hibiscus gin and tonic on tap. LOCAL DINING Other local dining hot spots include the lakeside Pisces Rising, where you can catch live music on the deck Thursdays through Sundays, The Goblin Market, and the club-like Beauclaire Dining Room in the historic Lakeside Inn. Mount Dora Brewing and the Rocking Rabbit Brewery are favorite local hangouts for pub fare, and you’ll also find tea rooms and pizza and burger joints around town. Maggie’s Attic of Florida—a family-owned wine and craft
beer cellar—is the go-to spot for tastings and lively events. Mount Dora also offers Taste of Our Town guided tasting tours of local food and wine. TREASURE HUNTING Architecture buffs won’t want to miss The Donnelly House, built in 1893 in the Queen-Anne style by John P. Donnelly for his wife, Annie, and listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1975. Then spend time exploring some of the local shops and boutiques. You’ll find clever and unusual specialty kitchen gadgets, spices and rubs at the awardwinning KaDee Kay Gourmet Kitchen Products downtown. Dig up an autographed treasure at Uncle Al’s Time Capsule, where signed photos of Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire and other entertainment greats are for sale. Antique addicts will want to plan a visit to one of Florida’s largest venues for collectibles and antiques: Renninger’s Twin Markets, open Fridays through Sundays. OUTDOOR ADVENTURE Biking and Segway adventures are fun ways to explore the town, plus, there are 130-plus miles of navigable waterways via kayak, canoe and paddleboard.
ROMANTIC DAY TRIPS A little off the beaten path, these charming neighborhoods and small towns, from Lake Eola to Lake Wales, are worth the drive. Downtown Orlando is the hometown heart of Central Florida arts, culture, nightlife and entertainment. From world-class performances at the Dr. Phillips Center to celebrated fine-dining options, Downtown Orlando is dynamic year-round. Be sure to take a stroll around Lake Eola to see outdoor sculptures, beautiful swans, or perhaps take your own ride in a swan boat. Nearby Thornton Park offers a great French bakery and charming sidewalk cafes. 400 S. Orange Ave.; 407.246.2555; www. downtownorlando.com Winter Park Just north of downtown is the area’s first resort community, where wealthy Northerners came down in the late 1800s to escape cold winters. Today, the area is popular for its scenic lakes, thriving arts community and shopping and dining scene. Park Avenue is the main thoroughfare and is chock-full of local boutiques, retail stores, sidewalk cafes and art galleries and even a scenic boat tour operation on the lakes. The Morse Museum of American Art holds the mostcomprehensive collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany stained glass. 151 W. Lyman Ave.; 407.644.8281; www.winterpark.org Winter Garden Quaint, friendly and free of pretention, the welcoming enclave with brick-paved streets and faux gas lamps is timeless yet trend-forward. Adults sup and sip wine and martinis in welcoming dining rooms, cafes and watering holes— chic, bohemian or cozy. A brewery and indoor locavore market, plus a weekly farmers market, offer up artisan wares and groceries. 300 W. Plant St.; 407.656.4111; www.cwgdn.com Lake Wales About an hour from Orlando and seemingly in the middle of nowhere, Bok Tower Gardens is a gorgeous 250-acre National Historic Landmark that sits on peninsular Florida’s highest point. What a Guy Planet Hollywood has always been about the stars, so when renovation, it did so with the help of its very own celebrity chef. Food Network star Guy Fieri joined the culinary team at Planet Hollywood Observatory to design a specialty burger and sandwich menu exclusively for the Orlando location. You’ll find an eat-with-a-fork Bacon Mac ‘n’ Cheese burger and the Mayor of Flavortown sandwich stuffed with pastrami and swiss. “One of my favorite things to make is burgers, and to have my little piece on the menu, just to be the burger guy, it’s a pretty cool thing.” The restaurant features a curated collection of filmmaking memorabilia, a 4,500-squarefoot video wall to entertain the entire family, in addition to a 5,000-square-foot outdoor Stargazers lounge overlooking Disney Springs.
“Guests come to Disney for the best vacation of their life. I’m gonna give them a burger they talk about when they get home.” Guy Fieri has joined forces with Planet Hollywood Observatory at Disney Springs for an exclusive burger menu. 10 W H E R E O R L A N D O I M AY / J U N E 2017

Orlando was a no-brainer destination. The couple loved the
Disney/Pixar movie “Up” for its sweet message about growing old with your true love, and of course, the whimsical journey using thousands of balloons. So they decided to use the movie for their wedding-day theme. The result: rainbow balloon boutonnières, old-timey bottle caps strewn around the tables and a bouquet made from candy-colored vintage jewelry. And guess who showed up for the dance? Bridal Beauty Tips
In a study released in February, Wallet Hub named Orlando the No. 1 destination for tying the knot, comparing the magical place “where dreams come true” to 150 cities across the country. Orlando is not only home to amazing wedding venues and entertainment for out-of-town guests, but it also boasts some of the best luxury hotels and spas. Weddings can be stressful, but thanks to Orlando’s health and beauty professionals, the wedding party can get plenty of R&R before the big day. Now is the time to look and feel your best, so take advantage of the opportunity for some ultimate pampering. Here are a few beauty tips to prepare you for your moment in the spotlight. BY LAURA ANDERS LEE AND HANCEL DEATON
BOOK A MASSAGE Mandara Spa at the Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin Resort unveiled a new menu tailored for brides-to-be. “We are here to make you feel special and beautiful,” says Cristina Sorondo, Mandara’s marketing director. One of the new spa experiences is a “Balinese Love Story,” which includes a couple’s Fire & Ice massage, plus a massageteaching session. For pre-wedding relaxation, Sorondo recommends the gentle Mandara Customized Massage based on Swedish techniques which includes a fragrant frangipani treatment for the scalp and a warm paraffin foot bath. mandaraspa.com GET A FACIAL On your big day, you’ll want to be positively glowing. Derek Hoffman, spa director at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World, recommends the Anti-Gravity Facial, which tones, lifts, firms and aids tired muscles in your face and neck. “Like ‘facial fitness,’ the musculature of your face is revitalized to yield a firmer, more contoured and youthful
appearance,” he explains. “If you are accustomed to receiving semiregular facials, then a day or two prior to the big day is optimal for you to schedule your treatment so your complexion has time to re-balance, and you still have the clean, radiant look.” Hoffman also recommends a full body scrub to even skin tone and bring new, soft cells to the surface. fourseasons. com/orlando/spa HOST A MANI/PEDI PARTY An afternoon at the day spa is a fun way to connect with your girlfriends. Marilyn Monroe Spas offer bridal packages that include wine, coffee and tea, and brides can also bring their own snacks and Champagne for a celebratory atmosphere. “Brides typically go natural or French while bridesmaids are more bold with color,” says Liz Maldonado, a spokesperson for Marilyn Monroe Spas.”Rose-gold glitter on the ring finger is a popular trend right now for brides.” Maldonado also recommends the OPI Gel treatment, which dries quickly to prevent smearing and lasts days longer. marilynmonroespas.com

Don’t Miss Tiffany at the Morse Museum WINTER PARK, Fla. — Of the many unexpected pleasures awaiting visitors to Central Florida, none may be as dazzling as a stroll through the galleries of The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany. The Tiffany collection at the Morse includes the designer’s jewelry, pottery, paintings, and art glass, as well as his famed leadedglass lamps and windows. Highlights include the restored ByzantineRomanesque chapel interior that Tiffany designed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and art and architectural objects from his celebrated Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall. The Morse, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this season, was founded by Jeannette Genius McKean (1909–89) in 1942 and named for her industrialist grandfather. She and her husband, Hugh F. McKean (1908–95), the Museum’s director until his death, built the collection over a 50-year period. In 1957, when a fire ravaged Tiffany’s Laurelton Hall, the McKeans salvaged all they could from the ruins for the Morse. In the Museum’s galleries, visitors will also find exhibits of American art pottery, Art Nouveau objects, and late 19th-and early 20th-century American paintings. [WHERE INSIDE]
Orlando Your Way
Bachelorettes
Guys Night Out
Romantics
For a memorable (hopefully) bachelorette weekend, hit International Drive. With a nice selection of restaurants, Pointe Orlando is a good place to start. For the food and the fun factor stop by Taverna Opa—you're actually encouraged to get up on the tables and dance. After dinner, stroll over to (1) Icebar, where you can enjoy bottle service and don fur coats inside the 22-degree ice bar. Continue the bar crawl at Howl at the Moon, where the dueling pianists know every song under the sun and especially love bachelorettes. Grab a specialty cocktail at (2) Sugar Factory and take your party up 400 feet on the Orlando Eye on your own private capsule. End the night at (3) Mango's Tropical Cafe, a spectacular Latin club straight out of South Beach with live shows nightly.
Orlando offers plenty of fun for the guys, too. Take an Uber over to the Hard Rock Hotel for a famous steak dinner at (1) The Palm. Then walk over to Universal CityWalk, where you’ll find a mix of dance clubs and bars. Grab a beer and watch the game on one of the 100 big screens at (2) NBC Sports Grill & Brew, the only restaurant of its kind in the country. Pat O’Brien’s is another great option, with hurricanes served in the courtyard just like New Orleans. Once you’ve had some liquid courage, you're ready for Rising Star where you can take the stage with your own band and back-up singers. After your 15 minutes of fame, head over to (3) Red Coconut Club for great people watching. (Tip: Purchase a Party Pass for $12, which gives you access to each bar in CityWalk.)
Start your day with a stunning (1) hot air balloon ride, just in time to see the sun rise over Central Florida. Toast with a glass of sparkling wine before crawling back in bed. Then head to the lovely town of Winter Park for a onehour boat ride. Winter Park Scenic Boat Tours will take you on Lake Osceola and two other lakes connected by narrow canals. You’ll see cypress trees and birds along with milliondollar homes and Rollins College, Florida’s oldest university. Grab lunch at a charming sidewalk café on nearby (2) Park Avenue. For the ultimate date night, make reservations at (3) Victoria & Albert’s, located at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, where award-winning chef Scott Hunnel presents seven immaculate courses paired with wine. Outside, see the fireworks shower Cinderella Castle.
