The Essential Orlando Welcome to Orlando and TGIF! (Thank Goodness It’s Fall.) Fall in Orlando means food, fashion and festivals galore, from Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights (p. 9) to the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival (p. 8) and Fashion Week (p. 6). Inside this issue, we share tips on how to do the theme parks like a VIP (p. 10) and where to find the best beer for Oktoberfest (p. 12). Since we’re celebrating our 80th anniversary this year, I’ve included an 80-minute itinerary for exploring one of my favorite pockets of town: Winter Park. 80 MINUTES IN:

WHERE NOW Orlando LOCAL FLAVOR
Magical Dining Month Fall is the season for great food and festivals, and one of our favorites is Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining Month from Aug. 29 to Oct. 2. Now in its 10th year, the event has grown to more than 90 restaurants that are serving up decadent three-course meals for a fraction of the cost. For example, guests may choose the salad, filet mignon and chocolate mousse at Morton’s on our famous “Restaurant Row” or the artichoke heart, seared local snapper and strawberry crostada at the five-star Four Seasons Resort, all for $33 plus gratuity. Magical Dining Month is the perfect way for visitors to sample several of Orlando’s finest restaurants while in town. Several Celebrity Chef restaurants are participating, like both of Emeril Lagasse’s outposts, Todd English’s bluezoo and the new Morimoto Asia at Disney Springs by the Iron Chef himself. In addition, several James Beard nominees are participating as well, including Kathleen Blake of the Rusty Spoon; James and Julie Petrakis of Cask & Larder and Ravenous Pig; and Kevin Fonzo of K. Contact your hotel concierge to book your seating or for a full listing, visit wheretraveler.com/orlando.
Chef Chat With Emily Ellyn Wars,” “Food Network Star” and “Cutthroat Kitchen.” Emily Ellyn is hard to forget with those cat-eye glasses, platinum blonde hair and ‘50s glamour. She loves walking Orlando’s main streets for locally roasted coffee, craft cocktails and local beer and visiting the city’s diverse neighborhoods for Peruvian dishes, Vietnamese cuisine and Ethiopian fare. “We have a melting pot of flavor that gives us the opportunity to eat a different dish every night of the year,” she says. “We are one of the most diverse food cities in the world.” Not only is Orlando’s palate diverse, but local produce like grapefruit, oranges, avacado and Zellwood Farms corn are ripe and ready to give diners a true taste of Florida.
“We have a melting pot of flavor that give us the opportunity to eat a different dish every night of the year.”
Cheers to Oktoberfest! Perfect pours are on tap at Orlando breweries and biergartens. It’s Oktoberfest year-round in Epcot ‘s Germany Pavilion where a Bavarian village serves genuine German beers, bratwurst and schnitzel. Orlando Brewery, Florida’s only certified organic brewery, celebrates with a signature Oktoberfest brew, commemorative mug, German band and Bavarian food truck. Cask & Larder taps its small-batch Oktoberfest brew, and Crooked Can Brewery, tucked inside Winter Garden’s Plant Street Market, celebrates with a three-day festival of beers and brats along with year-round tours every Sunday. Don’t Miss Tiffany at the Morse Museum WINTER PARK, Fla. — Of the many unexpected pleasures awaiting visitors to Central Florida, none may be as dazzling as a stroll through the galleries of The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany. The Tiffany collection at the Morse includes the designer’s jewelry, pottery, paintings, and art glass, as well as his famed leadedglass lamps and windows. Highlights include the restored Byzantine-Romanesque chapel interior that Tiffany designed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and art and architectural objects from his celebrated Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall. The Morse, which celebrates its’ 75th Anniversary this season, was founded by Jeannette Genius McKean (1909–89) in 1942 and named for her industrialist grandfather. She and her husband, Hugh F. McKean (1908–95), the Museum’s director until his death, built the collection over a 50-year period. In 1957, when a fire ravaged Tiffany’s Laurelton Hall, the McKeans salvaged all they could from the ruins for the Morse. In the Museum’s galleries, visitors will also find exhibits of American art pottery, Arts and Crafts furniture and metalwork, and late 19th-and early 20th-century American paintings. [WHERE INSIDE]
Orlando Your Way
Health Nut Eating healthy and staying active on vacation is easy in Orlando. SeaWorld, Universal and Disney can accommodate anyone with food allergies, and guests can forego French fries for healthful choices like grapes, apples and carrot sticks. 1) Erin McKenna Bakery NYC at Disney Springs serves an all-vegan and gluten-free menu of her award-winning doughnuts, cookies, bagels and cupcakes. Visitors can get active away from the theme parks by renting a kayak or canoe at Wekiva Island or 3) Shingle Creek Paddling Center or pick fresh grapefruit and oranges at Showcase of Citrus. For a healthy meal, head downtown to 2) Dandelion Communitea Cafe or to Winter Park’s Ethos Vegan Kitchen where sandwiches, salads, bowls and breakfast items are all vegan or vegetarian.
LGBTQ
Thrill Seeker
Orlando is home to the third-largest LGBT population in the country and the largest in Florida, making it a welcoming destination for LGBT visitors. Orlando’s LGBT community comes together Oct. 8 for 3) Come Out With Pride, an annual parade boasting more the 150,000 participants. A sophisticated dining, shopping and nightlife scene along with 1) world-famous, gay-friendly theme parks also awaits. College Park is a walkable district speckled with specialty shops and gourmet restaurants along with the LGBT-owned and operated The Spa and the 2) Jack Kerouac house. When the sun goes down, the go-to party is at Parliament House, a destination for the LGBT community for more than 40 years. Hamburger Mary’s is also an LGBT hot spot, especially for Tuesday drag bingo.
For the ultimate Florida adventure, clip in to the 3) Screamin' Gator Zip Line at Gatorland, where you’ll jump from a series of sevenstories tall towers and soar over hundreds of alligators and rare crocodiles. SeaWorld is now home to Orlando’s longest, tallest and fastest roller coaster. 2) Mako features a 1 mile track, a 200-foot drop and speeds exceeding 70 mph. The hyper-coaster takes riders over eight hills for relentless airtime. In the queue, watch live footage of sharks in the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean that have been tagged by SeaWorld's partner Guy Harvey. Head up into Florida’s blue skies in a War World II-era, T-6 plane. 1) Warbird Adventures offers daily flights for 15 minutes to 1 hour where you can experience thrilling aerobatics or just take in the sights.
