Q&A: David Peralta Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta on the upcoming season, the team, and what he loves about the Valley. What do you love about baseball? I love everything about baseball. For me, baseball is my life. I started playing when I was 3-years-old. ... I love the game. I like to have fun every time when I go out there to play baseball. This is my passion. Every time I step out onto the field I play like it is my last game of my life. So I really love everything about baseball. How are you feeling about the upcoming season after your injury? I’m really excited about it because for me it was kind of a tough year last year with my injuries and everything. So, the good thing right now is that my wrist is doing really good and I can’t wait to go out there and help my team to win games and do my 100 percent. [I want to] do my best and play really good for my team and my fans too, because it’s all about them. What are you most excited about for this season? There are a lot of things. We have a new staff, new manager, new players. For everybody last year it was kind of a tough season, and all of us,
we just learned from that and I think we’re strong this year and I think it’s going to be better. I can’t wait to see all my teammates go out there and perform the way that we know how to do it. I can’t wait to see that and see what’s going to happen. I know it’s going to be good! Do you have any rituals that you do before a game? Oh boy! I like to do my handshake with all my teammates. I do a specific stretch at the same time. And everything has to be, not perfect, but it has to be at the same time every day, going outside to the line to stretch ... do warm-ups, play catch and then come back and do my handshake with everybody. I have to do it every day and try to get everybody. Three words that describe your thoughts on the upcoming season? The first would be healthy—healthy because last year we went through a lot of hurt and everything. The second would be consistency. And then if you put those two together you’re going to get the third word, winning.
David Peralta
What do you love about the Valley? What I like a lot is that there are a lot of restaurants. When I go out there are a lot of places to go. [I like to] spend a lot of time with my wife at restaurants. I also like to go to Sedona when I get a chance. I really love Sedona. But [in the Valley], I like a lot of restaurants here. We have a lot of choices. Ok, well that leads us to our next question— what are your favorite restaurants in the Valley? I like Breakfast Club; it’s pretty good. I like Snooze and Hanny in downtown. Any favorite spots around town? Movies. Definitely movies. I like iPic. Every time there are good movies out I tell my wife we have to go.
What do you like to do during your downtime? For me, I like to spend time with my family. We always travel a lot with the team and play a lot of games, so sometimes it’s tough to spend time with the family. So when I have free time I love to spend time with my family—my family here in town, my wife, and with friends, do a barbecue. And rest! You spend a lot of time on the road. Any tips for traveling? During the season when we go to different cities I like to go out and walk around and see what’s going on. But most of the time I like to stay in my room! The only tip I can give is that if you go to some new place, walk around and see what’s going on and learn about it. 33

CIBO PIZZERIA Pizza lovers return time and time again for Cibo’s artisanal, Neapolitan-style pizzas and made-in-house pastas. The pizzeria is set inside a restored 1913 bungalow in downtown Phoenix, featuring exposed brick walls, hardwood floors, a beautiful stained-glass panel and a cozy patio. 603 N. 5th Ave., 602.441.2697
THE HOUSE BRASSERIE Dine on a quaint patio nestled in Old Town Scottsdale or inside the 1920s bungalow, trimmed with Victorian-era-

Main St., 480.634.1600 OLD TOWN TORTILLA FACTORY A historic adobe home sets the foundation for this Southwestern dining destination. Choose a seat inside or outside on the expansive flagstone patio shaded by 100-year-old pecan trees. Warm tortillas, served in place of dinner rolls, are

At downtown Phoenix’s Nobuo at Teeter House, James Beard Award-winner Nobuo Fukuda plates modern Japanese cuisine inside an 1899 wood-floored bungalow. The Pyramid Cottage-style, singlefamily home in Heritage Square was built by Leon Bouvier, and later home to Eliza Teeter (622 E. Adams St., 602.254.0600). In Tempe, Robert and Robin Trick purchased and remodeled a 1920s bungalow and opened House of Tricks in 1987. The neighboring 1903 adobe brick home was later added, with a tree-covered outdoor patio and bar linking the two properties. A contemporary American, seasonally inspired menu is accompanied by an award-winning selection of wines. (114 E. 7th St., Tempe, 480.968.1114).

[WHERE INSIDE]
Valley of the Sun
Cheyenne Woods [LPGA golfer]
Professional golfer—and Phoenix native—Cheyenne Woods is busy. The LPGA player recently participated in a 16th/17th hole challenge at TPC Scottsdale with fellow professional golfer Ricky Barnes for an episode of “Breaking Par,” and is now on tour with the LPGA. We caught up with her to talk golf, Phoenix and more. What do you love about playing golf? There are so many things that I love about it. I think it’s one of the most complex sports there is. There are so many different golf shots, and then the mental aspect of it, and I just love the oncourse challenge and the mental challenge that you have with the game. And then also, [when]
playing competitively, I love to travel. That’s one of my favorite parts that I’ve found the past few years playing on tour. I’ve played European Tour and now I’m playing the LPGA for two years. We go to some amazing places. And to be able to travel the world like that… I think is a treat. Also, to play all the golf courses! I love being able
96 W H E R E P H O E N I X + S COT T S D A L E I M A R C H 2017
to experience different places and countries. Can you tell us a little about your upcoming tournament year? I start[ed] the year in the Bahamas. [Now] we have a lot of domestic events here in the United States. I’m looking forward to [this year]. It will be my third year on tour.
When you’re home and not playing golf, where do you like to go here in the Valley? I go hiking a lot. I love hiking Camelback and Piestewa Peak mountains, and I’ve been trying to get up to Tom’s Thumb up in North Scottsdale to hike that. When I’m home, that’s something I love to do in the off time. I also love the Kierland area. There are so many great shops and restaurants. And then obviously also Old Town Scottsdale. So many great restaurants there too! Growing up in Phoenix, it’s just nice to be home and enjoy. I’m always finding new local spots too that I haven’t heard of.
Do you have any favorite restaurants here locally? That’s hard! I love so many of them. I love True Food Kitchen because it’s really healthy. That’s a go-to for me. The Mission in Scottsdale—they have great tacos, guacamole and mimosas. I love Seasons 52 at Biltmore Fashion Park. Also, a lot of little restaurants too. I love Thai food. There’s a restaurant on Indian School called Thai E-San and it’s my favorite. They have the best Pad Thai I’ve ever had in my life. You travel a lot. Do you have any travel tips you can share? I would say in terms of travel, be organized! I’m not organized, but I think it makes it a lot easier when you’re packed [and you know] exactly what you’re going to do and [your] outfits. I always overpack! Also, [for the airplane], you have to make sure you stay hydrated. I always travel with a bunch of lip balms, lotions and hand sanitizer or wet wipes just because of germs, and staying moisturized when you’re up in the air. ... Also, travel with snacks—especially when you’re trying to be healthy. I travel with a baggie of lunch meat or fruit or trail mix because the worst thing is when you’re trying to live a healthy lifestyle and you’re traveling in the airport and it’s really hard to find a healthy meal.

Let’s talk Phoenix. You were born here and grew up here… do you have a favorite course that you play in the Valley? There are so many great courses in Phoenix! I love desert golf so I love playing up in North Scottsdale. But growing up, I played ASU Karsten Golf Course a lot. And for some reason—I think it’s just because I grew up playing it, it’s fun, and I have great memories being a kid—I love playing that course. So I would say either Karsten or one of the courses up in North Scottsdale like Troon or Grayhawk… all those courses up there. I just love the scenery. It’s just so peaceful to me to be out in the desert and to play golf with the mountains in the background.
