The Essential Phoenix+Scottsdale There‘s so much to see and do! To help guide your trip, this month we talk about some of the local must-see landmarks and destinations (pg. 22), the most unique foods in town (pg. 24), wine-tasting rooms (pg. 25) and so much more. 80 MINUTES IN: Learn about science with hands-on fun for both children and adults alike at the Arizona Science Center. While you could easily spend all day exploring the locale, if you’re pressed for time, make sure to stop by the All About Me exhibit on level one. Walk through a “working” stomach and test your heart muscles in the Wheelchair Racers. Next take a quick look at the American Airlines Flight
Arizona Science Center Zone to explore flight prior to learning about brains in The W.O.N.D.E.R. Center. On level two, stop by Get Charged Up and lie on a bed of nails before checking out the SkyCycle, which is suspended nearly 15 feet in the air (extra fee). Next, head up to level three and the Forces of Nature exhibit, where hurricane winds await. If you have additional time, view a show at the planetarium. www.azscience.org

Unique and Unusual Foods
Are you ready for a culinary adventure? The Valley of the Sun is filled with them. A foodie destination, here you can indulge your wild side and let your taste buds decide if you want seconds.
Quiessence
Sicilian Cauliflower with Grilled Lamb Heart Tucked away at The Farm at South Mountain, Quiessence is a romantic destination known for its farm-to-table dishes. Housed in a historic home, it offers unique indoor and outdoor spaces—and this appetizer, made with Sicilian cauliflower, grilled lamb heart, pickled shallots, pine nuts, golden raisins, honey gastrique and bronze fennel that is grown at the farm ($15, though varies based on seasonal ingredients). “The amount of anise, black licorice and fennel flavor that you get from the dish is so unique and amazing,” explains Chef Dustin. 6106 S. 32nd St., 602.276.0601
Paloma Ranch Calf Fries At The Stockyards you’ll find a storied steakhouse that is known for its corn-fed, aged steaks and prime rib. If you’re down for trying something more unique, Paloma Ranch Calf Fries ($12) are also on the menu. Calf testicles are cut into bite-sized portions, dipped in seasoned flour, then egg washed, breaded with Panko and deep fried. The dish is served with cocktail sauce and fresh lemon. The Stockyards 5009 E. Washington St., 602.273.7378
Crudo
Crispy Pig Ears Crudo breaks its menu down into four elements: crudo (raw), cotto (cooked), mozza (mozzarella) and griglia (grilled), plus an Antipasti section—which is where you’ll find this offering. The ingredients in the dish ($9) may be simple (fried pig ears and fresh Fresno chilis), but they make for a tasty plate. It is ”a labor of love because [it takes] a couple days to get ready, and honestly, I never thought that pig ears would ever take off because they were so weird. I love using ingredients that you don’t see everywhere, [then see] people enjoying them,” says Chef Cullen Campbell. Crudo’s cocktail list and wine menu are just as unique and varied as the food. 3603 E. Indian School Road, 602.358.8666
Hikers will go to all lengths to avoid rattlesnakes on the trails, but at Rustler’s Rooste, diners flock to taste them. The snake ($17.95) is fried and served with another local flavor: prickly pear cactus fries. Dip either into the chipotle ranch that accompanies the dish and you’ll see why the restaurant is known for providing a “cowboy Western experience.” Make sure to take the ”Famous ‘Tin’ Slide” into the dining room. There are also sawdust-covered floors, a live country Western band, a strolling cardshark/magician, and yes, a saloon. After dinner, saunter over to the General Store where you can purchase an “I ate the snake” T-shirt. 8383 S. 48th St., 602.431.6474
Rustler’s Rooste
Mini Corn Quesadillas This dish ($11) at Sierra Bonita Grill is made not only with manchego cheese and spinach, but huitlacoche, a fungus that grows on corn which is a delicacy in Mexico (it’s also known as corn smut). “I first tried huitlacoche during a culinary immersion trip that our opening team took to Oaxaca. Our experiences there heavily influenced the direction of the menu. Sierra Bonita Grill’s opening chef, Bill Leisses, created the recipe. I actually didn’t think the dish would sell well because huitlacoche doesn’t sound very appetizing. To my surprise, it has remained one of our staple menu items for the past 11 years, and it is one of our most popular appetizers,” says owner Nate Hopper. 6933 N. [WHERE INSIDE]
Valley of the Sun Your Way
Sportslovers
Beerlovers
Craftlovers
In addition to the option of attending one of the many local sporting events in town, the Valley is full of various locales for sportslovers to experience. For a selection of memorabilia, make a stop at (1) Alice Cooper’stown. Owned by legendary shock rocker Alice Cooper, the sports bar showcases a selection of baseball, football and hockey collectibles. Football fans can head to (2) Ziegler Fiesta Bowl Museum. Full of Fiesta Bowl artifacts, all 128 FBS sports helmets and Heisman, Fiesta Bowl and Eddie Robinson trophies are on display. Get your motor running at (3) Penske Racing Museum, where cars, trophies and items from Penske Racing are highlighted, including several of the Indianapolis 500 race-winning cars.
When in Phoenix, do as the Phoenicians do and grab a locally made beer. (1) O.H.S.O. (Outrageous Homebrewer’s Social Outpost) has three locations. You can sip on a standard favorite or try one of the company’s own brews. Add a burger, salad or the Mac del Mar and make it a meal. Just reopening this month after a remodel and expansion, (2) Pedal Haus Brewery features handcrafted European-style beers and a Belgian-American gastropub menu, as well as a large patio and beer garden. (3) Four Peaks Brewery now has four Valley locations, including one at Sky Harbor International Airport (terminal 4). The brewery is known for such favorites as its Kilt Lifter, Oatmeal Stout, Hop Knot and Peach Ale. This month also marks the release of its popular seasonal Pumpkin Porter.
It’s easy to get crafty in the Phoenix area. Pick up beads and beading materials at one of two (1) Bead World locations for a make-at-home experience, or try your hand at a Leather Wrap Bracelet, Wire Wrapping or Metal Stamping class. Kids and adults alike let their creative imaginations loose while painting pottery items (plates, cups, animal figurines) at (2) As You Wish Pottery Painting Place. There are multiple locations—drop by, settle in and make your own creation or register for a class and let the experts guide your artwork. Pinterest-enthusiasts find a home at (3) Pinspiration. Choose from an ever-changing menu of projects, and then grab the supplies and directions for your own easy DIY. When hunger hits, choose a snack or drink from the menu of light bites.
