CELEBRATING 80 YEARS OF TRAVEL

The Essential St.Louis September traditionally marks the opening of the cultural season in St. Louis, and there are exceptional productions on tap from Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Dance St. Louis and the Fox Theatre, to name a few. Coming to a close is the regular baseball season, which brings us to the St. Louis Cardinals. 80 MINUTES IN:

Cardinals Hall of Fame As the Redbirds fight for a playoff spot, it’s a good time to revisit the team’s storied history in the Cardinals Hall of Fame and Museum in Ballpark Village, where, although you could easily spend the better part of a day, you can also see quite a lot in 80 minutes. You can check out amazingly detailed stadium models of all three ballparks in which the Redbirds have played, hold an authentic bat used by a Cardinals great, celebrate the team’s 11 World Series Titles, climb into The Broadcast Booth to try your hand at calling the big play and contemplate the outstanding career of Stan Musial, the greatest Cardinal of them all. In short, the museum holds one of the largest team-specific collections of artifacts and memorabilia in the world.

FERGUSON MURALS

In the wake of the 2014 shooting death of an unarmed African American teenager by a white police officer, “Ferguson” became shorthand for racial tensions in America, and the subsequent protests in this otherwise charming suburban community left behind burned buildings, looted businesses and a profound sense of unease. Remarkably, artists descended on the wounded city and began painting murals on boarded up buildings, almost all imbued with messages of healing, hope and peace. Those murals are now on display in an unprecedented community collaborative exhibition in venues acros the region, beginning with COCA. COCA The Center for Contemporary Art spearheaded the exhibit, Outside In: Paint for Peace, featuring a selection of the original murals painted on the boarded-up storefronts by amateur and professional artists in the days and weeks following the 2014 protests in Ferguson, Missouri. The exhibition launches COCA’s 30th anniversary season in the Millstone Gallery and runs concurrently at five other locations throughout the city and county. 524 Trinity Ave., in The Loop, 314.725.6555. SAINT LOUIS ART MUSEUM SLAM hosts an extraordinary and endlessly entertaining exhibit of more than 100 works by artists outside the mainstream art establishment in Self-Taught Genius: Treasures from the American Folk Art Museum, on view through September 11. Framed within the context of seven perspectives from which people are compelled to create, the exhibit showcases the deep need for expression and the exceptional examples of visual statements made by individuals whose vision comes entirely from within. One of the top comprehensive art museums in the U.S., the Saint Louis Art Museum features exhibits from nearly every period and national origin and maintains a full schedule of lectures, tours, films and performances. Admission to the museum and its permanent col-

CAHOKIA MOUNDS STATE HISTORIC SITE The interpretive center at the site of the largest pre-Columbian city north of Mexico has won a prestigious award from the American Association for State and Local History for its new exhibit, Wetlands and Waterways: The Key to Cahokia, a 52-foot, life-sized diorama that depicts the importance of the waterways and natural resources to the success of the culture that lived here from about AD 1000 – AD 1350 and features a 21-foot, 700-year old dugout. The exhibit is only a small part of the outstanding interpretive center, which features superb exhibits on the history of the culture that flourished here and mysteriously diappeared. www. cahokiamounds.org. 30 Ramey Dr., near Collinsville, IL. 618.346.5160. LOUIS CAM, in its ongoing efforts to show cutting-edge art from anywhere and everywhere, presents Kelley Walker: Direct Drive, the first solo American museum exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Kelley Walker, on view Sept. 16 through Dec. 31. Walker, who exploits a dizzying range of technologies and media—3-D modeling software, laser-cutting, photography, painting, printmaking, collage and sculpture—explores ideas of recycling, identity, race, class, sexuality and politics. www.camstl.org. 3750 Washington Blvd. at Spring Ave., in Grand Center, 314.535.4660. PULITZER ARTS FOUNDATION The curators at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation are always on the lookout for seemingly disparate art that yet manages to

6

coalesce into a comprehensible theme. On view through Oct. 15, a trio of exhibits examine issues of everyday living, from light switches and armchairs to entire houses: The Ordinary Must Not Be Dull: Claes Oldenburg’s Soft Sculptures (light swiches, green beans and more); Exquisite Everyday: 18th-Century Decorative Arts Objects from the J. Paul Getty Museum (carpet, chair, chamber pot, etc.); and raumlaborberlin: 4562 Enright Avenue, the result of the Pulitzer commissioning Berlin-based architecture collective raumlaborberlin to create an installation (the skeleton of an entire house) from salvaged materials from a nearby house fated for demolition. www.pulitzerarts.org. 3716 Washington Blvd. in Grand Center, 314.754.1848. Q&A The Rep’s 50th A short conversation with Repertory Theatre of St. Louis Artistic Director Steven Woolf. The Rep’s 50th season includes “Follies,” “A Christmas Carol,” “All My Sons” and “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

FOUNDATION GROUNDS gets the day going in its colorful, welcoming space with a large menu of locally sourced breakfast items, plus smoothies, coffees, espressos, lattes and cappuccinos. 7298 Manchester Rd. MAVEN makes its own line of hand-made, smallbatch bath, body and candle goods using environmentallyfriendly components and no paraben. Founder Kate Bethel goes in for memorable scent names like Little Black Dress, Don Draper and Cheap Date. ROUGHNECK BEARD COMPANY Men can get in on the act at Roughneck Beard Company, offering the complete product regimen for a full, lush, soft, vibrant, beautiful beard. 7282 Manchester Rd. LARDER & CUPBOARD Specialty foods from the St. Louis region,

across the U.S. and around the world: crackers, liquor, preserves, sausages, cheeses and more. 7310 Manchester Rd. BEE NATURALS offers the Bee Naturals line of skin-care products for men, women and babies made with natural ingredients and intended (by their nurse creator) to have a specific therapeutic purpose. Plenty of gift items, and honey, too. 7192 Manchester Rd. VOM FASS specializes in liquid assets: oils, liqueurs, vinegars, spirits, whisky and wine, which you can sample before you buy. The shop also hosts wine tastings, cooking classes, Scotch tastings and much more. 7314 Manchester Rd. PENZEYS SPICES What Vom Fass is to liquids, Penzeys is to spices, offering an encyclopedic selection of spices, spice blends, spice mills, jars, books, herbs, extracts and more.

KAKAO CHOCOLATE makes and sells a splendid variety of, you guessed it, chocolates, in all its many forms and flavors. Great gift-hunting for those chocolateloving friends. THE SILVER LADY No visit to Maplewood should pass up the outstanding (and affordable) jewelry at The Silver Lady, the most recent expansion of the longsuccessful shop in the Central West End. Look here for bold, stylish designs you won’t find in malls. SCHLAFLY BOTTLEWORKS The rather large microbrewery takes its food as seriously as the beer and hosts a variety of special events, like art fairs farmers markets and (shown opposite) regular tours of the facilities.

Q: How many productions has the Rep mounted up to and including this, it’s 50th season? A. 530 Q: How many world premieres has it produced? A. 23 Q: How many productions have you personally directed? A. 41 Q: Name a few familiar actors who have performed in Rep productions. A: Kathleen Turner, Holly Hunter, Lucy Liu, Norbert Leo Butz, Paul Winfield, John Spencer, Julie Harris, Esther Rolle, Charles Nelson Reilly. Q: Do you see a trend in contemporary theater that you find especially encouraging? A. I think audiences are willing to take the ride with plays they have not heard of before. The adventure is attracting people. Q: What is the Rep doing to advance the careers of promising young playwrights? A. Our Ignite series sponsors three new plays each spring that are presented in a nonperformance mode, but it gives the playwrights a chance to hear the plays and guage audience reaction to the work. The plays may undergo some more devel-

opment and some may get full productions. We also continue to commission writers to develop plays for full production. Several of our commissions have gone on to other theatres. Q: What has you particularly excited about the 50th season? A: ”Follies,” our opening show with all sorts of layers to the stories, the songs—a magnificent piece of writing on all levels, and a sensational cast. “Follies,” Sept. 7-Oct. 2. St. Louis Your Way

Beer Lovers

Antiquers

First Timers

O' beer, ye golden elixir of barley, hops and yeast, how do we love thee? Sliding down our throats, that's how. (1) Morgan Street Brewery, a Laclede’s Landing mainstay, won a world beer competition with its fantastic Golden Pilsner, and the ambitious menu delivers flavors way beyond mere pub grub. You've heard of Ferguson, right? Well, it's way more charming than you've been led to believe, especially the walkable downtown along Florissant Rd., where (2) Ferguson Brewing Company serves up plenty of charm in the form of beer. Either of (3) Urban Chestnut ’s two locations are worth a visit, but we recommend the Grove Brewery and Bierhall on Manchester Ave. in which to enjoy the singularly delicious line of traditional and unorthodox brews.

The thrill of the hunt, the ecstasy of the find— antiquers know these emotions well, and there's plenty of opportunity for emoting in St. Louis. At (1) Robert Morrissey Antiques and Fine Art in Clayton, museum-quality furniture, accessories and art, mostly European from the 18th and 19th centuries, has made the establishment a trusted destination since 1948. (2) The Green Shag Market , an amalgam of numerous dealers on Manchester Rd., swings toward mid-century but offers a sufficiently eclectic selection to interest any collector. If you only have time to visit one shop, (3) Warson Woods Antique Gallery, also on Manchester Rd., is the place for you, featuring more than 200 quality dealers under one roof. Give yourself plenty of time; the facility is huge and the variety is mind-boggling.

Believe it or not, the must-do St. Louis list includes a fair number of free attractions (including one of the following), the happy residue of a civic ethos that enjoys making cultural and educational opportunities available even to its least privileged citizens. (1) Missouri Botanical Garden, the prettiest 79 acres in the city, began as the private estate of Henry Shaw, which explains why some St. Louisans call it "Shaw's Garden." (2) Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis welcomes visitors of all faiths to gaze in amazement at its remarkable collection of mosaics—the world's largest under one roof. A construction project is under way at the (3) Gateway Arch, but it's still open for business, which includes rides to the top. All Arch visits, however, must begin at the nearby Old Courthouse.
