Morean

Today the Morean Arts Center is perhaps most known for its impressive Dale Chihuly collection. But the intricate glass sculptures represent a small part of the Center’s contributions to the local arts scene. For a century, the Center has been working to develop local artists and encourage art appreciation. That history is celebrated in 100 Years/100 Artists (May 13-June 25) featuring the work of of artists who played significant roles in shaping the Center’s history. 719 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, 727.822.7872

For decades, the idea of the American road trip has inspired writers, musicians and screenwriters. It’s celebrated in books like “On the Road,” movies such as “Thelma and Louise” and “Easy Rider” and Bruce Springsteen’s anthem “Born to Run.” Today, the road trip is commemorated once again in The Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg’s exhibition: The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip organized by the Aperture Foundation in New York. The exhibit features 99 photographs celebrating more than 50 years of what organizers call American “road culture” illustrated through Route 66 gas stations, kitschy roadside attractions and roadtrippers riding with the windows down and hair blowing in the wind. “This exhibit is a window into America,” said David Connelly, director of public relations at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. Hailed as a “visual tour de force,” the exhibit presents the work of legendary photographers including Robert Frank, Ed Ruscha, Inge Morath and Lee Friedlander, for whom the American road is muse. Dalí

Dalí Revealed on semi-permanent display through the spring, features nearly 50 photographs giving a behind-the-scenes look into the ordinary life of an extraordinary artist. French photographer Robert Descharnes met Salvador Dalí aboard the S. S. America in 1950. The two became fast friends and confidants. Descharnes’ access to the dynamic artist gives us an intimate glimpse into Dalí’s daily life. The exhibition includes images of Dalí on the beach and at his home in Spain. One of the most striking portraits show him working on his epic “Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea” in his New York studio. These photographs are part of a larger collection purchased by The Dalí Museum in the 1990s. They were last on display in 2003. For a keepsake visit the museum’s gift shop. In addition to Dalí-inspired decor and clothing, you can purchase cubist jewelry, artist replicas and even Dalithemed perfume.
