THE MOSCOW URBAN FORUM – 2014 DATES FOR THE NEXT MOSCOW URBAN FORUM HAVE BEEN SET. THE 2014 FORUM WILL BE HELD FROM DECEMBER 4 TO 6 IN THE CENTRAL EXHIBITION HALL “MANEGE”.

As in previous years, the Forum will gather world-caliber experts, famous urbanists, architects, managers and researchers – and provide them with the opportunity to share their experience with Moscow’s professionals. The organizers decided to further the successful experience of past years and to hold the festival day as part of the Forum – with open to the public lectures, discussions, exhibitions and other events across the city. The Forum topic will be determined and announced in March 2014. However, it’s already known that, besides traditional discussion of development prospects for Moscow and world megalopolises, a considerable portion of the 2014 program will be devoted to developing Russia’s regions.

THE MOSCOW URBAN FORUM TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MIPIM 2014 CONFERENCE The Moscow Urban Forum has unveiled the program for participating in the major international real estate and investment conference MIPIM 2014, taking place from March 11 to 14 in Cannes. ON MARCH 11 THE FORUM TEAM WILL HOLD A MEETING OF THE EXPERT CLUB IN WHICH INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS IN THE URBANISM SPHERE WILL PARTICIPATE. Moderating the discussion of the agenda for the next Moscow Urban Forum will be Greg Clark, professor at the Urban Land Institute (ULI Europe), international expert on corporate and city strategies and investments.

Participating in the discussion will be: Jim O’Neill, former chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Hannu Penttilä, deputy mayor of Helsinki for city planning and real estate, Graeme Maxton, futurist, economist and author, and John D. Macomber, professor at Harvard Business School. On the same day, deputy mayor of Moscow for urban development and construction Marat Khusnulin together with federal ministers will open the Moscow stand. The stand will feature an exposition on the Moscow Urban Forum. For the first time, the Forum will present at MIPIM the exposition “Moscow – development beyond the center”, based on the findings of the research “Archaeology of the Periphery”. The research was compiled in 2013 expressly by the commissioning of the Moscow Urban Forum. The exposition will feature maps of Moscow’s fringe territories, reflecting the spontaneously formed centers outside the center, the so-called meta-cities, as well as a map of Moscow industrial areas as the most perspective territories for the city development and investments.

LESSONS OF THE URBAN LAND INSTITUTE CONFERENCE In February the organizers of the Moscow Urban Forum attended the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Conference, and discussed with numerous foreign experts the topic of the 2014 Forum. The team met with the head of the UK Government Property Unit Sherin Aminossehe, who leads all of the UK government departments for land and housing. She, in turn, spoke about land use strategy and real estate belonging to the UK government. Colin Liziri, professor at Cambridge University and real estate financing specialist, lauded Moscow as a dynamically growing city and shared his opinion on opportunities for attracting capital to city projects. Keith Clarke, head of the international organization Forum for the Future, discussed experience of implementing urban projects in the UK.

THE URBAN LAND INSTITUTE IS A NONPROFT RESEARCH AND EDUCATION ORGANIZATION FOCUSING ON LEADERSHIP IN THE USE OF LAND AND OVERALL IMPROVEMENT OF THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT, A CONTINUOUS PARTNER OF THE MOSCOW URBAN FORUM.

RESEARCH “ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE PERIPHERY” NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE Expressly for the III Moscow Urban Forum, held in 2013, a team of Russian and foreign experts compiled the research on fringe districts in Moscow and other world megalopolises titled “Archaeology of the Periphery”. THE ANALYSIS OF LIFE BEYOND THE CENTER’S BOUNDARIES ALLOWED FOR SEVERAL IMPORTANT CONCLUSIONS: TWO-THIRDS OF RESIDENTS OF OUTLYING DISTRICTS ALMOST NEVER TRAVEL TO THE CENTER; 73% OF AREAS BETWEEN THE TRR AND MCAD ARE ACCESSIBLE TO PEDESTRIANS; FRINGE DISTRICTS LACK ANY IDENTITY. The experts reached the conclusion that Moscow’s periphery offers great potential for development – this is space with free access and open planning, green courtyards and parks, although Moscow requires an integrated approach to developing urban fringes. The 500-page book with detailed infographics was published with a limited print run. Now its PDF version is available in both Russian and English on the official website of the Moscow Urban Forum, www.mosurbanforum.ru.
