With the arrival of summer comes outdoor yoga, sunset runs and swims, afternoons of soaking up the sun by your neighbor’s pool and playdates at the beach riding the waves (don’t forget the SPF). I love summer because it’s all about fitness, food, friends and fun – many of the things we are all about at Mother’s! Cheers to picnics on the beach and bonfires and paddleboard yoga!

My motto for June, July and August is: Let’s go! Let’s go try … the $6 smoothie at Mother’s and then head to the beach for some volleyball! Let’s go try…the Homemade Grab & Go Vegan Chopped Salad from Mother’s and after we eat it, let’s take a boat to Catalina! Let’s go PLAY BINGO at Mother’s (because Bingo is cool again)!

This season, Peterson Family Fruit is supplying Mother’s with delicious stone fruits. The Petersons are rooted in their land- having lived in the same place for four generations, they have no plans of moving. Vern began farming at the age of five, out in the field, grading cannery peaches besides his father. The entire family pitched in, as that’s just how the family farm worked.

Carrying on the 100-year tradition, growing delicious stone fruit is natural to the Petersons. The family farm is located in the heart of the Central Valley, in a small Swedish town called Kingsburg. Vern grew up working alongside his father in the orchards. Through that season, he learned life-long lessons, working hard and learning from his mistakes. The love of life and a love for people was instilled in Vern by his father—an enduring trait he still reflects to this day. Catch the glimmer in his eye and the wide smile across his face.

Now Vern, along with his son Erik, farm a variety of organic tree fruits including peaches, plums, and nectarines— a family tradition passed on to the next generation. Beyond the work, the Petersons care for their people, genuine and whole—in all they do. Vern and his family work hard, using organics to enrich the world around them, both in their fruit and through the people. The family also raises organic chickens, using their waste for fertilizer on the farm— a symbiotic relationship that naturally boosts farming operations. Mother’s is proud to partner with Peterson Family Fruit this season!

Summer break is upon us and if you have little ones at home, you likely are hearing “I’m hungry!” pretty frequently. When you have a lot going on, the last thing you probably want to do is take the time to make a healthy snack. Let’s be honest, it can be time consuming… but it doesn’t have to be!

Grass-fed Wagyu GRILLING FAVORITES TO TRY THIS SUMMER

It’s the season for backyard barbecues and Mother’s has some exclusive new additions that are sure to be favorites this grilling season. Two of the noteworthy new items include Mother’s Grass-fed Wagyu Ribeye and Mother’s Grass-fed Wagyu Burger Patties. Both options are delicious, juicy, and tender.

We suggest trying them out for different occasions. For the quintessential backyard summer barbeque, burger patties are a must; however, if you’re throwing a more intimate

summer dinner party, we recommend the ribeye. While both can be prepared on the grill or stove, we suggest cooking the burgers on the grill, a few minutes on each side until cooked to your preference. As for the ribeye, we like to opt for the stove and oven. First sear both sides of the ribeye on the stove for a few minutes and then put the pan in the oven until it’s cooked to your liking.

Both are great when served with fresh, organic veggies from our produce department such as delicious organic asparagus. Yum!

Easy Summer Party Side Dish CORN SALAD

If you need a side dish that will be great to bring to any summer party, you can’t go wrong with this corn salad. It’s easy to make and equally as tasty! This one requires minimal prep, which is even better. If you try it, post it on Instagram and tag us @mothersmarkets.

INGREDIENTS:

SALAD

• 4 cups fresh organic corn

• 1 can organic black beans, rinsed

• 1 cup organic cherry tomatoes

• 1 bunch organic green onions, thinly sliced

• 1 bunch organic cilantro, chopped

DRESSING

• ¼ cup rice wine vinegar

• ½ cup extra virgin olive oil

• 1 tablespoon honey

• 1 teaspoon ground cumin

• ½ teaspoon salt

• ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

• Dash of cayenne

DIRECTIONS:

1. Steam corn for 4-5 minutes. Cool and cut kernels from cob

2. Whisk together dressing ingredients and toss over salad ingredients

3. Cover and chill until serving

Sun Safety WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A SUNSCREEN

Before you head out to soak up some rays this summer, it’s important to make sure that you have a good sunscreen to protect your skin. Many people don’t realize, however, that there are many qualities to look at when it comes to choosing a sunscreen. Here are a few things to consider.

Is Your Sunscreen Broad Spectrum?

It’s important that you choose a sunscreen that is broad spectrum! What does that mean?

Broad spectrum sunscreens protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Both types of rays are harmful in their own ways. UVA rays can cause premature aging and potentially contribute to some skin cancer types while UVB rays can cause sunburns and a majority of skin cancer types. Given the negative effects of each type of ray, it’s good to pick a sunscreen that protects against both.

Is Your Sunscreen Water Resistant?

Sunscreens become less effective when they are exposed to water. That’s why if you’re planning to go swimming or hit the waves, it’s key to have a sunscreen that is water resistant, meaning it is formulated to make it more resistant to water for longer periods of time. Even with a water-resistant sunscreen, it’s important that you continue to reapply the sunscreen frequently, especially if in the water. The American Academy of Dermatology has recommendations for how frequently to reapply sunscreen in different scenarios.

Is Your Sunscreen Reef-friendly?

If you’re planning a trip to the beach, another factor to consider is whether your sunscreen is reef friendly! While the term “reef friendly” is not regulated, you can determine if a sunscreen is in fact reef friendly by checking out the ingredients. Savethereef.org has a guide that lists all the ingredients to avoid to protect our oceans!

Does Your Sunscreen Contain Harmful Ingredients?

While people have a range of opinions as to whether certain ingredients found in chemical sunscreens are okay to be put on the skin and thereby be absorbed by the body, it’s important to be aware. A quick online search can provide a lot of information on which ingredients to avoid and which to be concerned about. In general, however, mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are “generally regarded as safe and effective” by the FDA even though they are not as effective at blocking out the sun’s rays compared to chemical sunscreens. Everyone should do their own research to determine which ingredients they are comfortable with so they can choose the proper sunscreen.

• Toppings: sliced kiwi, banana slices, berries, shredded coconut, almonds, chia seeds

DIRECTIONS:

1. Chop frozen banana into slices. Pit and scoop out avocado. Add into blender.

2. Add remaining smoothie ingredients and then blend together until smooth.

3. Pour each serving into a bowl and add toppings of choice. Enjoy immediately. Yields three servings.

DAILY REDS WATERMELON ICE CREAM

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 scoop Daily Reds Antioxidant

Superfood Powder

• 3 cups watermelon, cubed

• 4 tablespoons stevia powder

• ½ cup coconut milk

DIRECTIONS:

1. Slice watermelon into cubes and freeze in a single layer on piece of parchment paper or foil for 3-4 hours.

2. Add half of watermelon cubes to food processor and blend until smooth.

3. Scrape down sides with rubber spatula and add Daily Reds, stevia powder, coconut milk, and remaining watermelon cubes. Blend until smooth.

4. Enjoy immediately or freeze 2-3 hours for a firmer texture. If frozen for longer, defrost 30 minutes before serving. Yields four servings.

DAILY BLUES BLUEBERRY SUMMER REFRESHER

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 scoop Daily Blues Mind & Mood Superfood Powder

• 3 oranges, zested and juiced (about 1 cup)

• ⅔ cup blueberries

• ½ cup fresh mint leaves

• 1 cup sparkling water

• Blueberries and mint for garnish

DIRECTIONS:

1. Zest oranges, then juice. Set aside.

2. Add Daily Blues, orange zest, orange juice, blueberries and mint into blender. Blend until smooth.

3. Pour through a strainer, then discard any remaining solid pieces.

4. Pour into glass over ice, then top off with a generous amount of sparkling water. Garnish with berries and mint. Enjoy immediately. Yields two servings.

Easy Dinner Idea CHICKEN ENCHILADA CASSEROLE

Spice up your dinners with this casserole baked with cream cheese and tender Mother’s roasted chicken. It’s a dish the entire family will love! We recommend making this meal on a Monday night because every Monday our Organic and Non-GMO Roasted Chickens are on sale in our Homemade Grab & Go section!

INGREDIENTS:

• 5 cups Mother’s roasted chicken, shredded

• 8oz softened Organic Valley cream cheese

• 4 cups Organic Rumiano Monterey Jack Cheese, shredded

• 9 Mi Rancho Corn Tortillas, cut into strips

• 28 oz red or green Siete Enchilada Sauce

• Cacique Queso Fresco

• Fresh Organic Cilantro, chopped

• Mother’s Homemade Grab & Go Guacamole

• Mother’s Homemade Grab & Go Fire-Roasted Salsa

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 375°F

2. Blend together grated Monterey Jack cheese and softened cream cheese

3. In a 13x9 casserole dish, layer half of the shredded roasted chicken, half of the enchilada sauce, half of the tortilla strips, and half of the cheese blend. Repeat layers

4. Bake covered for about 40 minutes. Uncover and cook for about 10 more minutes

5. Top with crumbled queso fresco and chopped fresh cilantro

6. Serve with Mother’s Homemade Guacamole and Fire-Roasted Salsa on the side

Vegan Grilling Entree GRILLED PORTOBELLO MUSHROOMS

For any occasions this summer where you are grilling and need a vegan entree option, we suggest trying this grilled Portobello mushrooms recipe. The marinade adds the perfect flavor and it’s easy to prepare as well as grill.

INGREDIENTS:

• 4 LARGE ORGANIC PORTOBELLO MUSHROOMS

• OIL FOR PREPARING THE GRILL

Marinade

• ½ cup balsamic vinegar

• 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

• 1 tablespoon low sodium vegan soy sauce

• 1 tablespoon fresh organic rosemary, chopped

• 1 teaspoon garlic powder

• ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS:

1. Whisk together marinade ingredients in a dish large enough to have the mushrooms marinate in a single layer

2. Turning the mushrooms to coat both sides, allow mushrooms to marinate for 1030 minutes

3. Brush grill with oil to prevent sticking. Place Portobellos on the grill and brush them with the marinade as they grill

4. Cook for about 4 minutes on each side

SOUR WATERMELON MINT MOCKTAIL

INGREDIENTS:

• 8oz fresh organic watermelon juice

• 1 oz fresh organic lime juice

• 1 oz fresh organic lemon juice

• 7 organic mint leaves

• Ice

• Soda Water

DIRECTIONS:

1. Breakdown your fresh watermelon to create watermelon juice. We recommend using a blender to easily get the juice. If you prefer a more chunky watermelon juice, use a muddler to crush the watermelon

2. Juice enough lime and lemon to get 1oz of each

3. Take 7 mint leaves and place them one at a time in the palm of your hand. Using your other hand, slap the mint leaf to release the oil of the leaf

4. Fill your cup with ice

5. Add in the watermelon, lime, and lemon juice and 5 mint leaves to your cocktail shaker with some ice. Shake for 20 seconds vigorously

6. Pour the mixture over your ice and add soda water

7. Garnish with the last two mint leaves

Must-Try SALMON WITH WINE SAUCE

Did you know that Mother’s carries its own line of sustainable seafood including delicious Atlantic salmon? If you’re wondering how to cook the salmon for a restaurant-worthy meal at home, trying this recipe is a must. It’s super tasty and pairs well with fresh organic asparagus.

INGREDIENTS:

• 4 pieces Mother’s Atlantic salmon

• ½ cup sugar

• 2 cups red wine (pinot noir works well here)

• Fresh organic rosemary

• Salt and pepper to taste

• 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

• 1 tablespoon butter

DIRETIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 400°F

2. Place sugar in saucepan over medium heat. Without stirring, cook until sugar melts and starts to turn a golden brown. You can swirl or shake the pan occasionally

3. Remove from heat and carefully add the red wine

4. Put over high heat, add a sprig of fresh rosemary and cook until the wine is reduced and is the consistency of syrup. This should take about 15 minutes

5. Remove rosemary sprig, add the balsamic vinegar and butter, and stir. Hold until salmon is finished

6. Heat a cast iron pan until very hot. Season salmon with salt and pepper. Place fish in the pan and immediately place into the oven. Cook 4 minutes. Turn fish over and cook 3 minutes for medium rare. (More time if you prefer it)

7. Remove salmon

8. Top with sauce and garnish with chopped rosemary
