WELCOME

I

t’s been more than eight years in the making and finally, the largest event to ever be staged in the Arab world has opened its doors: Expo 2020 Dubai. When Dubai first made the Expo bid in 2011 and subsequently won it in 2013, the city was buzzing with excitement and today, as the event, which kicked off on October 1, gets well underway, the atmosphere across the emirate is even more electric.

Perhaps the challenges of the last 18 months have amplified this sense of opportunity and possibility, as we are aware, more than ever before, of how privileged we are to be able to travel to attend a world event. Meeting, connecting, collaborating and exchanging ideas as one global community, with a view to creating a better future for us all – the core purpose of the World Exposition staged since 1851 – has never been more relevant. Expo 2020 Dubai encapsulates this ethos in its overarching theme, ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, with its subthemes, Mobility, Opportunity and Sustainability, aiming to provide solutions to the global challenges we face today. Every pavilion and participant at Expo is aligned to at least one of these themes, showcasing innovations and ideas designed to inspire us all to be agents of change. The Expo site itself is an exemplification of the themes, from its physical design, world-leading sustainability initiatives and its

commitment to inclusivity, with every participating country housed in its own pavilion for the first time in the event’s history, to its transformation into a smart and sustainable city – District 2020 – when Expo’s doors close next year. If you are visiting the event, check out our comprehensive guide in this issue, outlining Expo highlights, from architecture icons, themed pavilions and the action-packed events programme, to business-focused opportunities such as forums, thoughtleadership discussions and networking tools and events. Never has there been a better opportunity to explore 191 countries in one place, not only discovering business and investment avenues, but unearthing new and exciting industries, technologies and examples of best practice. Expo has been billed as the ‘World’s Greatest Show’, and on this occasion, it’s worth believing the hype. It’s a chance to broaden our minds, from entering dialogues on topics facing business, industry and humanity and gaining insight into what the future will look like, to thinking about the impact we have on other people and the planet and how we can change that for the better.

ABU DHABI LIFTS QUARANTINE MEASURES FOR ALL VACCINATED TRAVELLERS

8

ABU DHABI now welcomes fully vaccinated tourists and residents travelling from all countries around the world, as well as unvaccinated visitors from ‘Green List’ countries, with no quarantine measures in force. Vaccines must be approved by the World Health organisation (WHO). Through the Abu Dhabi Green Pass, tourists can register their international vaccination certificate or vaccination exemption document for verification five days before their travel date, via the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) Smart app or via ica.gov.ae website. Applicants receive an SMS confirmation that includes a link to the Alhosn app, which must be downloaded prior to travel. The Alhosn app displays users’ vaccination status and PCR test results, which are required to activate the Abu Dhabi Green Pass. Upon arrival, travellers receive a Unified ID number from airport immigration, or via the ICA Smart app or website; this completes the registration on the Alhosn app. Following a PCR test at the airport, visitors can activate the Green Pass, allowing them entry to all public spaces in the emirate. Visit VisitAbuDhabi.ae, ica.gov.ae and alhosnapp.ae.

Expo 2020 Dubai ups its safety measures EXPO 2020 DUBAI, the largest event to be staged in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region and the first World Expo hosted in the Arab world, has opened its doors. The six-month event, the largest global gathering since the start of the pandemic, has introduced enhanced entry measures to protect the safety of the millions of visitors it anticipates. To enter the Expo site, ticket holders aged 18 and above are required to present proof of having received any COVID vaccine recognised by their national government or a negative PCR test taken within the previous 72 hours. While non-vaccinated visitors are strongly encouraged to get tested before coming to Expo, a facility adjacent to the Expo 2020 is conducting free PCR tests on presentation of a valid Expo 2020 ticket, with results expected within four hours.

The measures build on existing protocols to ensure the health and safety of all Expo visitors, participants and staff, including on-site sanitisation stations, mandatory face-masks indoors and outdoors and two-metre social distancing rules. All Expo and international participant staff, volunteers, contractors and service providers must be vaccinated. For a full guide to Expo 2020 Dubai and convenient hotels, see pages 20-41.

Etihad enhances Verified to Fly

ETIHAD AIRWAYS has upgraded its Verified to Fly service to offer a more streamlined and personalised offering through its website, etihad.com. Seven days ahead of travel, all guests receive a personalised email informing them of the documents required for their destination. These travel documents can now be uploaded directly to the ‘Manage my Booking’ page of etihad.com up to 72 hours before departure. The new website functionality replaces the email upload system, which was launched by the airline

in May 2021. The new upload process guides travellers through the process of uploading and shows the specific documents needed to get verified for their chosen destination. Once uploaded, the documents are checked and guests receive an email confirming they have met all requirements for their flight. Additionally, travellers can check the status of their submission at any time by logging onto Manage my Booking at etihad.com. Etihad requires all passengers to show a negative PCR test to protect the in-flight environment.

The pleasure of flying over this part of Arabia, as opposed to, for example, heritage sites in Europe, is that there is no clutter. A GUIDE TO

EXPO 2020 DUBAI From iconic architecture and worldleading innovations to thoughtprovoking discussions and business networking opportunities, there are plenty of reasons to visit this global gathering of humanity

EXPO 2020 DUBAI

PHOTOS: EXPO 2020 DUBAI

n October 1, the UAE made history when it opened the doors to Expo 2020 Dubai, the first World Expo to be staged in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region. Launching exactly one year later than scheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the exposition, themed ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ through subthemes Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity, features 191 participating nations, special Expo pavilions, plus partner and organisation pavilions, opening up a world of possibilities to connect with new people, places and businesses and of course, to be inspired by world-leading innovations, outstanding architecture, the beauty of multi-culturalism, and much more. World Expos are events that celebrate the spirit of humanity, bringing together the nations of the world to showcase bestin-class solutions designed to drive human progress and tackle global challenges. In 1851, the first World Expo, held at London’s Crystal Palace, showcased the ambition and optimism of the Industrial Age and ushered a new era of globalisation. Some 170 years later, Expo’s role to foster dialogue and chart new courses remains, but as the 21st century unfolds, the opportunities and challenges the world faces are very different. Population growth, rapid urbanisation and environmental damage are some of the most pressing issues, but the tools we have to tackle them are developing all the time, with new technology at the fore. By taking a unified approach, we can all make a difference, and that is Expo 2020 Dubai’s goal, encapsulated in the ‘Connecting Mind, Creating the Future’ theme, with each subtheme encompassing solutions and approaches to world challenges. Opportunity is focused on unleashing human potential, highlighting how change is possible when individuals and communities from across the world work together to solve global issues.

Mobility aims to create smarter and more productive connections, encouraging knowledge sharing and facilitating the movement of people, things and ideas to progress society, while Sustainability throws the spotlight on our relationship with nature, highlighting world-leading efforts to harmonise our interactions with the environment.

INTERNATIONAL PAVILIONS

O

WORDS GEMMA GREENWOOD

For the first time in World Expo history, every participating country has its own pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. With 191 nations taking part, it provides a unique opportunity to travel the world in one place, discovering new cultures, architecture and innovations. Each pavilion is also a meeting place to conduct business. Don’t miss our round-up of country pavilion highlights in our November issue.

The Expo site

Expo’s subthemes are embodied in the site’s design. A vast showcase spanning 4.38 square kilometres – the equivalent of 600 football pitches – the event is divided into three districts – Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability – as well as the Al Forsan and Jubilee zones, all meeting in the centre at Al Wasl Plaza, home to a giant dome that also serves as a 360-degree projection canvas. Within each themed district is a themed pavilion: Mission Possible – The Opportunity Pavilion; Alif – The Mobility Pavilion; and Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion. All other pavilions, including those of international participants, organisations and official Expo partners, are located across all three districts, as well as the two zones, depending on their area of focus at Expo. The wider Expo event area is known as District 2020, which after the event, will evolve into a smart city and mixeduse community. It will contribute to the UAE’s future vision for sustainable development, acting as an innovation ecosystem that nurtures high-growth sectors such as smart logistics, enabled by advanced technologies including the internet of things, AI, big data and 3D printing. Located in Dubai South, a new and expanding destination in the emirate, which is home the world’s largest airport, Al Maktoum International, District 2020 will be an integrated community designed to attract a wide range of entities, from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies – “a place for people and businesses to connect, create and innovate”. The World Majlis is a forum where diverse points of views are shared on important topics of our time. Each conversation brings together globally recognised thought leaders who are invited for their exceptional contributions to the theme and their unique perspective on the topic. In each Majlis, students and members of the public are welcome to contribute and engage. You can also take part in a series of conversations that focus on vital women’s issues presented in collaboration with the Women’s Pavilion. ike a phoenix rising, the small Caucasus country of Armenia is emerging from the pandemic as a destination with big potential. Rich in history, culture and breathtaking natural scenery, this ancient nation is being reborn as new investment is ploughed into a range of industries and ventures. They include plans to launch a national airline in partnership with the Middle East’s first lowcost carrier, Air Arabia, and the announcement of a new technology park backed by Iranian funding, offering hope to a country of just three million that is struggling to make its way through an economic tragedy compounded by a three-month war with neighbouring Azerbaijan last year. Connectivity is key to trade and the new airline will give the country a much-needed boost in this respect, bringing Armenia closer to the rest of the world. While Armenia has long-established connections to the UAE, with Air Arabia flying directly from Sharjah to Yerevan since 2006 and flydubai linking Dubai to the country’s capital since 2010, other countries in the region are harder to reach, even less so since the pandemic given many air routes around the world have simply shut down.

Aviation chiefs are acutely aware of the challenges. Tatevik Revazian, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Committee of Armenia, says improving air connectivity is critical for economic growth and job creation. “Having a strong national low-cost airline is essential for the development of Armenia’s air transport sector, especially as a tool to recover faster from the COVID-19 crisis,” he explains. flydubai says passenger traffic growth on the Dubai-Yerevan route has noticeably increased since the pandemic, offering hope to the destination and a surprising upside to the global crisis. In 2019, the carrier operated a daily schedule to the city, but in response to demand for summer travel, it boosted operations to 10 flights weekly from July until late October 2021. During the past decade, Armenia has recorded some impressive gains as its tourism industry begins to realise its full potential. The sector contributed to nearly 11.8 per cent of the country’s GDP in 2019 and accounted for 12.5 per cent of total employment. While the brutality of the pandemic is obvious, the tourism industry has done its best to cling on. At luxury hotel The Alexander, for example, there have been no redundancies. Despite the crippling impact of reduced air connectivity and fewer diplomats travelling, business has remained robust at the property, says Director of Sales and Marketing, Hayk Sahakyan,

Exploring Yerevan The country’s capital, one of the world’s longest continuously inhabited cities, is the most densely populated region of Armenia and home to one-third of its population. Buzzing with life, from its markets to bars to cafés, there is a European elegance, influenced by its western border with Turkey. Most of its ancient history was razed during the Soviet era, though the grandeur of the empire is still evident in details such as the grand designs of the underground stations and the city’s statuesque opera house. Culture abounds in this city, which boasts a wealth of museums and galleries showcasing old and new Armenia. They include the Matenadaran Musuem, home to ancient manuscripts and a research institute; The National Gallery of Armenia, exhibiting the national history of visual, decorative, applied and international arts; and the Armenian Genocide Museum and Memorial, next to Mount Ararat. As a nation nestled among such a variety of countries, Armenia’s cuisine is as colourful as its history, with the land contested for centuries by invading empires from Mongol to Ottoman and Soviet. A must-visit in the city is the Noy Wine Brandy Vodka Museum where iconic cognac lover Winston Churchill’s beloved Ararat was first made. This is a rare opportunity to step back in time to this 19th century site where even the walls have stories. Other top things to see and do in Yerevan include a visit to Hraparak Square, famous for its singing fountains, mosaic rock carpet and beautiful surrounding buildings; a climb up the famous Cascade to Victory Park for breathtaking views across the city; a browse of Yerevan’s weekly handcrafts market, packed with beautiful locally made carpets, gifts and jewellery; and sampling a relaxing cup of Armenian coffee in one of the many cafés on the historic Freedom Square. Don’t forget to try one of the many local delicacies - the shashlik (kebabs) or lavash (local bread) are particularly good. For a taste of fine Armenian cuisine, dine at Dolmama, which has attracted the likes of Prince Charles and Hillary Clinton, both of whom have spent an evening in this quaint restaurant where delicacies include Dolma and barbecued meats. This converted house oozes Armenian character and charm, with dishes reflecting the country’s position at a crossroads on the Silk Road, infused with influences from Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Abovyan 12 on the city’s oldest street, tucked away behind what seems to be a simple gift shop before opening out into a little wonderland, offers a wonderfully authentic Armenian experience with good quality food, a lively atmosphere and a cobbled courtyard as the backdrop. For private bookings, the Lusik Aguletsi House Museum and Art Café is a monument to Armenian history and culture and promises a luxurious fineOCTOBER 2021

dining experience in the former home of Armenian artist and icon, Lusik Aguletsi. Saryan Street, known informally as Wine Lovers’ Street, regularly hosts foodie events and offers a lively atmosphere at a range of eateries and bars as revellers spill out onto the city’s streets.

A Tuscany of the east With a blooming number of artisan cheese makers such as the Mikayelyan family farm, where cheese tastings could easily blow anything in Europe out of the water, Armenia is reminiscent of Tuscany, but on the other side of the Black Sea. A 6,500-year-old wine history makes Armenia one of the oldest known wine makers in the world, just behind Georgia at 8,000-years-old. With homemade cheese, freshly grown local produce, abundant fresh breads and a warm summer climate, Armenia is Europe’s best-kept secret.

Beyond the capital The heart of Armenia truly lies outside the city, where the heritage and natural landscapes come alive. Just a few kilometres from Yerevan you’ll find the ruins of Zvartnots Temple, built in the 7th century and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Further afield is Yell Extreme Park, the first adventure destination of its kind in the country, where activities include adrenaline-pumping zip lining across the valley, via Ferrata and horse riding. We took a guided twohour hike through the lush green forest to explore the undulating terrain. The tree canopy provided a wonderful shelter from the sun and the short downpour. Tufenkian Heritage Hotels offers heritage inspired properties in idyllic locations around the country and the Tufenkian Avan Dzoraget hotel, a Medieval castle-inspired property that sits on the Debed River surrounded by lush mountains, offers a truly magical fairytale escape. For skiing, the Marriott Tsaghkadzor is a popular destination during the winter months, while in summer it is the second home of wealthy ‘Yeravanites’ looking to escape the city humidity. This hotel has fantastic facilities including an indoor pool and gym, and although there is one main restaurant serving international cuisine, the local area has a plethora of appealing dining destinations providing a closer glimpse into authentic Armenian rural life and cuisine.

In the small village of Tsaghkunq in the Sevan Lake region, around one hour from the capital, celebrity chef Yura Sargsyan has created a French-inspired farmhouse concept where fine dining meets authentic Armenian hospitality in the small village in which he was raised. We visited Areni Wine Factory where the verdant vineyards spread for acres and make for the most picturesque scenery away from the more barren landscapes of the Gulf. According to the Vine & Wine Foundation of Armenia, the country has 400 indigenous varieties of grape, 31 of which are used to make wine. Though this is half of that found in Italy, humble Armenia is just one-tenth of its size. A good wine with dinner at one of Yerevan’s many local diners sets visitors back no more than around $14, which makes sampling the local produce cheaper than buying a soft drink at a hotel restaurant in Dubai. Hoteliers have identified vast potential to promote the country’s gastronomic heritage, with Areni’s blossoming wine tourism industry prompting Armenian chain Tufenkian Heritage Hotels to open a new property in the destination.

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: Armenia oozes authenticity; Sevanavanq is one example of Armenia’s stunning natural landscape; Geghard Monastery; food market; Yell Park, Armenia’s first adventure destination

Burgeoning business ties Economic ties to the Gulf remain largely focused on the UAE, providing a much-needed lifeline to a country ravaged by poverty. According to the Asian Development Bank, 26.4 per cent of Armenians were living below the poverty line in 2019. That figure is said to have grown dramatically over the past few years, with around 36,000 people displaced since the conflict flared up in September, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. However, this summer, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy hub, Masdar, and the Armenian government announced plans to expand the country’s renewable energy capacity with an ambitious strategy to build two new solar power plants, the first of which is due for completion in 2025. Benefiting from 2,700 hours of glorious sunshine every year, solar power is a promising prospect for Armenia, which has no fossil fuel reserves of its own and relies heavily on natural gas and nuclear fuel imports from Russia and Iran. Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs cites the primary areas of trade and economic cooperation between the UAE and Armenia as information technology, agriculture, jewellery, diamonds, food security, renewable energy, and tourism. In 2019, exports from Armenia to the UAE amounted to $57.3 million, outweighed by imports worth $281.2 million, although 635 UAE companies are now registered in Armenia. OCTOBER 2021

Hayravanq

How to get to there Air Arabia and flydubai operate flights from the UAE to Yerevan and Qatar Airways serves the destination from Doha, with a short flying time of three hours. When to go In the summer, temperatures can reach as high as 35 degrees Celsius in the city, but dip to as low as 20 degrees Celsius in the mountains. It’s also cooler by night, so Armenia offers the perfect escape from the hot Gulf summer. Come winter, its mountains are a picturesque ski spot, offering much more competitive rates than the likes of Europe.

46

How to get around Yerevan is pedestrian friendly and very walkable, but it’s also easy to pick up a GG taxi on the dedicated app. Further afield, it’s best to hire a guide as Armenian and Russian are the primary languages and internet signals are as patchy as the roads. We used Galust Hovsepyan, a veritable encyclopedia on the country’s history and culture. Where to stay The Alexander, a Luxury Collection property by Marriott, is one of the newest hotels in the capital. A regular host to visiting diplomats and celebrities, guests to date include Angela Merkel and famed American-Armenian, Kim Kardashian. It is

within walking distance of the main tourist spots such as the breathtaking cascades monument and Republic Square. For a more authentic Armenian experience, the Tufenkian heritage hotel is a must stay, with the property’s architecture and interior design paying homage to the country’s roots. Tucked away behind Republic Square, it’s within walking distance of all the top attractions and offers stunning vistas across the city if you’re lucky enough to stay on one of the top floors. While luxurious, it has charm and character and offers fantastic value for money. See The Report (p59-66). Visas E-Visas are required for visitors from several countries so check online at evisa.mfa.am

“The UAE and Armenia have been strengthening economic ties over the last decade,” says Sudhir Sreedharan, Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations, flydubai. “Several MoUs and agreements have been made for further investments from the UAE to help reinforce close cooperation in a variety of sectors including trade, tourism, energy, medical services, technology, infrastructure and the financial sector.” Key focus areas for exports from Armenia remain food production and agriculture, he adds, with cargo carried from Yerevan to Dubai dominated by cheese, fruits, mushrooms and strawberries, although other commodities such as medical items, shoes, bags and jewellery are also exported. “The goods and commodities that we carry on flydubai cargo into Yerevan from the entire network include spare parts, mobile phones and COVID-19 testing kits and vaccines,” he adds. when you plan your trip. The visa price is very affordable at around US$7. COVID-19 PCR tests are required on arrival although fully vaccinated travellers need only produce their vaccine certificate. For those requiring a test before for returning to their home country, most hotels offer the service for $35 or local clinics for $23. Results must be printed before you reach the airport and stamped at check-in. Ensure you check the clinic is certified for issuing travel PCR certificates as not all of them are. The country has been mask-free since July 1, but airports and flights remained masked with temperature checks conducted at the airport.

As Armenia looks to forge closer trade links with the Gulf, hopeful of attracting more business and investment, it is apt that the nation’s pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, which kicks off this month, is located in the Opportunity District. The pavilion encourages visitors to “create a bond with Armenia” as it showcases is rich, historical past and modern reality as one of the region’s largest providers of intellectual resources and technological development products. The pavilion theme is therefore ethnotech, which it defines as “the technological future, based on the best traditions of the past”. Visitors are guided through the pavilion by video screens presenting Armenian culture, science and history, then to a zone of physical objects of historical significance and finally, to a tourism zone where a luminous interactive tree of life takes centre stage. If you want to know more about Armenia and its business credentials, the country’s pavilion at Expo is a great place to start.

CROSSROADS OF THE WEST

With the opening of its new airport, Salt Lake City maintains its standing as one of America’s key transportation hubs

A

n important gateway to the western US has a lot to celebrate as Salt Lake City’s beautiful new terminal, dubbed “The New SLC,” has opened in the midst of a global pandemic. Salt Lake City (SLC) unveiled the first phase of its new four-million square-foot terminal complex in September with a second concourse opening a month later to great fanfare. Construction for the new airport began in 2014. When all phases of the facilities are complete, the airport will be able to accommodate 34 million travellers annually as SLC sets its sights on future growth far beyond the world of COVID-19 and the outmoded 50-year-old facility it replaces.

FROM LEFT: Salt Lake City (SLC) terminals; Teminal 1 past security

SLC is an important hub for Delta Air Lines, and this significant upgrade over the airport’s original facilities – most of which will soon be demolished – was a much-needed enhancement even before the days of Coronavirus. Part of the old terminal complex required passengers travelling on regional jets to walk outside to the plane exposing them to cold temperatures and precipitation in chillier months. Now, all gates have jet bridges (although there are some gates for regional aircraft where a shuttle drives travellers from the terminal to the plane). On opening day, Bill Wyatt, the airport’s executive director, said, “To say we are excited to be here today is an understatement. After six years of construction and many more years of planning, we are proud to open the first new US hub airport in the 21st century.” As the first entirely new hub airport facility to open, SLC is

already prepared for the next stages of growth. Additional phases in the airport’s development, which will be implemented based on demand, include the option to add more gates to the concourse buildings for further expansion. The airport was built without using any local tax dollars, and instead relied on the airport’s own revenue as well as funding from passenger facility charges (fees typically tacked onto an airline ticket), bonds and federal grants.

SMART SPACES

The airport is on track to achieve LEED Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council recognising its impressive efforts for sustainable design. In addition to using locally sourced materials and energy-efficient systems in the architecture, the airport’s ground equipment is electric, which helps to reduce the airport’s output of greenhouse gases by 8,000 metric tons of each year. In the 3,600-space parking deck (twice as many spaces as before), the airport has added more charging ports for electric vehicles. The stunning terminals feature plentiful natural light through 50 foot-tall windows with panoramic views of the apron. The building’s design and architecture are inspired by the area’s canyon and mountain landscape with lighting that adjusts throughout the day to mimic sunlight and shadows. Concourse A-West houses 25 gates for Delta Air Lines while Concourse B has 21 gates for all other SLC airlines as well as several more gates to be used by Delta. The airport now has six gates equipped for international flights, which means they are directly connected to Customs and Border Patrol facilities, allowing passengers OCTOBER 2021

to walk from the plane to take care of the necessary arrival formalities. The new airport facilities can welcome some of the largest planes on the commercial market, too. While none is scheduled to serve the airport at the moment, the gates can handle a plane as large as the Boeing 747-400 while the runways can withstand the weight of an Airbus A380. Connecting the two concourses is a nearly 1,000-foot long underground tunnel with artwork that showcases the state’s four distinct seasons through an intricate mural. Interestingly, the tunnel was built back in 2004 using funding from a federal grant when the airport first anticipated this project, but it was not officially opened until now. Each seat in the gate areas features a power outlet and two armrests for additional space (even more reassuring these days), which is a vast improvement over the old terminal building’s waiting areas. The airport is also proud of the fact that it has ample restroom facilities meaning that typically no traveller is more than 150 feet from the nearest restroom. That’s impressive for such a large building. Concourse A is as long as a dozen football fields. Among the many dining options are several local breweries and pubs, which bring a taste of Utah to the travel experience even for those who are just connecting through the airport. The new airport practically doubles the amount of retail space for travellers with as much as 45,000 square feet dedicated to shopping, with prices said to be on par with street pricing.

ADVANCED SECURITY

Among the new features of the airport is a centralised security screening checkpoint that includes more advanced body scanners and more efficient screening lanes enabling multiple travellers to divest their items simultaneously. The “automated screening lanes” use conveyor belts to return bins from post-screening back to the front of OCTOBER 2021

the checkpoint while also diverting bins that require additional screening to a separate lane. The bins also have a radio frequency tag that keeps track of the contents along their journey and make it easier for staff to search bags that need an additional check. Behind the scenes, new screening technology automates the security process for large items like skis, bikes and golf clubs, the kind of gear the airport sees a lot of throughout the year. Previously, these were handscreened by TSA. SLC is the first US airport to have automatic inspection of such large checked items. During the summer months, the $170 million baggage screening system can manage 3,540 bags every hour while during the winter months, it can handle 3,276 bags per hour. The new baggage system stretches six miles in length; that’s an impressive journey for your bag to travel before it even takes flight.

TRIPLE-SIZED SKY CLUB

As the airport’s only lounge, here’s some exciting news for travellers: Delta fliers will find a new 27,000-square-foot Sky Club that is triple the size of the one it replaced. It also has a popular Sky Deck terrace

FROM TOP: Large-scale art walls or “Whimsy Walls” are unique vinyl wall wraps that were created from original artwork; New 27,000-squarefoot Delta Sky Club

(similar to the outdoor balconies in Delta’s Atlanta, Austin, and New York JFK clubs) with views of the airport and Wasatch Mountains. Unlike its predecessor, this lounge has showers, which is a welcome sign for those stepping off longer flights. There are also lounge chairs, closed pods for phone conversations, work cubicles with power outlets and bag storage, a fireplace, and plentiful regional art and photography. The New SLC is poised for great things both now and in the future. While it is unclear just when the majority of travellers will return, the age-old adage “if you build it, they will come” is certainly what the airport is hoping will happen as fast as possible.

OPINION

Aye aye captain! Tipsy passengers, unruly revellers, a cheeky smoke in the loo – it all seems like a bit of fun until somebody gets hurt. Enter the captain… OUR ANONYMOUS PILOT REVEALS THE SECRETS OF THE COCKPIT

I

am sure that many of you, at some point, will have read media articles about how well paid pilots are. I can neither confirm nor deny this as it depends on who you fly for, what you fly and where you are based. However, as background, I thought you might be interested to know more about the responsibilities and authority of the captain. First and foremost, the captain is legally responsible for the safety and security of the aircraft and all persons on board. Safety throughout the aviation world is paramount, which is why air travel has earned the reputation of being one of the safest forms of transport. If, at any point, the captain has any concerns in this regard, their decision is final and cannot be overridden. Before a flight departs, the captain must be satisfied that the aircraft is technically fit to fly, the weather is suitable for the flight and there is sufficient fuel to get to the intended destination. Additionally, the captain has to ensure that air traffic control knows which route is being flown, that the aircraft has been loaded correctly, that security has been checked and that all the customs procedures have been complied with. Once these tasks are complete, the captain will sign two pieces of paper to confirm they are happy to operate the flight. THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY Another area of responsibility is to ensure that no person’s behaviour while on board endangers the flight or any other person. In this regard, both verbal and physical abuse are wholly unacceptable and against the law. This includes anyone who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

While on a British-registered aircraft, UK law applies, even when in flight over other countries. Whenever such situations arise, the captain has the authority to act in order to bring the situation under control. This could involve a verbal warning, asking the police or security services to attend the aircraft on arrival, or, if all else fails, to order the crew to physically restrain the person until the appropriate authorities arrive.

The captain is legally responsible for the safety and security of the aircraft and all persons on board

Regarding alcohol, it is actually illegal to be drunk on board an aircraft, and in this regard the captain can refuse boarding or stop the serving of further alcohol to a passenger who, in the crew’s judgement, has had sufficient. Indeed, the captain can refuse boarding to anyone they deem to be a risk to the safety of the flight. A common situation I have dealt with several times is a passenger refusing to fasten

their seatbelt, or to cease using their mobile phone when asked to do so. Again, it is illegal to disobey an order from the crew that relates to the safety of the flight and a warning to that effect, in my experience, resolves the situation very quickly. There have been occasions where a passenger has, for instance, been smoking in the toilet, or has behaved inappropriately, where a warning has not sufficed and I have called ahead for the police to meet the aircraft. I am pleased to say that, on every occasion, the police have been most supportive and used the full force of the law to deal with the seriousness of the situation. IN SAFE HANDS There are too many responsibilities to detail in this article, but it goes without saying that throughout the flight, the captain is ultimately responsible for any actions or decisions that are taken. It is in an emergency situation where this is most relevant. In these circumstances, the captain must use their skills, and those of the crew, to ensure the outcome is never in doubt. As you might expect, these situations can be highly pressurised and for the captain carry enormous responsibility. Returning to my comments at the start of this article referring to pay, we say we are not paid for the 99 per cent of the time when everything goes to plan but for the 1 per cent when something unexpected or challenging occurs and you are safely returned to Mother Earth to live another day. I am often asked, “Do you ever feel the weight of all that responsibility on your shoulders when you are flying?” The answer I give is, “No, we are so well trained that it’s just another day in the office.” OCTOBER 2021

1

LA CROISETTE

This should be every visitor’s starting point and is best experienced in the morning. It’s hard to believe this famous boulevard was once a dirt road surrounded by sand dunes, until visionaries transformed it at the end of the 19th century. Stretching for 2km, La Croisette is sandwiched between the Mediterranean Sea and luxury hotels, boutiques, and restaurants. While taking a stroll you have the best people watching opportunities, a sport of fun in OCTOBER 2021

2 CARLTON CANNES BEACH CLUB

Here you can dine on lobster rolls and beef tartare while savouring views of the Mediterranean and mega yachts bobbing on the glistening sea. Stars spotted at this club most recently include Beyoncé, Sharon Stone and Eva Longoria, and in the past, famous friends and Hollywood greats, Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, dined here. British film director Alfred Hitchcock filmed scenes from

his 1955 classic To Catch A Thief at the beach club and its adjoining hotel, the Carlton Cannes. Who can forget Grace Kelly standing elegantly in her gown at the hotel’s Grand Salon in this iconic movie? It was also here that during the 1955 Cannes Film Festival, Kelly and Prince Rainer III of Monaco had a private meeting, which is suspected to have led to their 1956 wedding in Monaco. carltoncannes-thebeachclub.com

This huge covered market north-west of the Vieux Port, located behind the Cannes City Hall, is the place to find fresh produce such as juices, meats and cheese, and is a great way to experience the city as a local. Antiques and second-hand items are also on sale when Marché Forville transforms into a flea market on Mondays. You might spot chefs from some of Cannes’ top restaurants shopping for their ingredients here. If you are looking for a foodie souvenir such as jarred sources, or packing for a beach picnic, you won’t be disappointed with the delicacies on offer at this vibrant market. There are plenty of places to dine here too. marcheforville.com

RUE D’ANTIBES

For affordable shopping, Rue d’Antibes, which is one street back from and parallel to the pricier La Croisette, is just the ticket. In centuries past, this road linked Toulon to Antibes, hence its name. Here you’ll find high street brands like Mango, Zara and department store fnac, as well as confiseries, chocolatiers, perfumeries, tea rooms and more. With buildings dating back to the 19th century, it’s a worthy place to just take stroll if shopping isn’t your thing. B A C K G R O U N D flydubai has operated this route since 2010 and remains the only carrier to offer a business class service between the UAE and Yerevan, the Armenian capital. With travel and business ties between this Caucasus nation and the Middle East region growing, in sectors including tourism, agriculture, solar energy and technology, this route has expanded from primarily serving leisure and VFR traffic, to catering to a growing number of business travellers. Yerevan has also become a short-break hotspot with GCC-based travellers. With a centuries-old history and one of the oldest known wine nations of 6,500 years, there is much to do and see in the city and beyond, from culture to outdoor adventure. F R E Q U E N C Y Pre-pandemic, flydubai

served Yerevan daily. At time of press, the service had become so popular, particularly during the summer, that frequencies were upped to 10 flights a week from July until October 2021. A steady performer for the airline, Yerevan is among its top 15 routes in terms of traffic, with 51,000 passengers carried between January and July 2021.

My one criticism is that the service was not consistent, but given the current climate where the hospitality industry is finding it hard to recruit trained staff, I am much more forgiving. I enjoyed my stay, and I would go back. Gemma Greenwood OCTOBER 2021

B A C K G R O U N D If the walls of the Mayflower could talk, they would speak of US presidents, Middle Eastern kings, and world leaders who have stayed, dined or partied at the hotel. Before the pandemic, this landmark hotel, which dates back to 1925, was a vibrant social hub – the gathering place for politicians and high society. W H A T ’ S I T L I K E ? Steeped in history and exuding elegance, this 581-room property spans an entire city block. A Marriott Autograph Collection hotel, former US President Harry Truman called it the

“second best address in Washington, D.C.”, after the White House, of course. It boasts modern elegant design, tall ceilings and amenities that make you feel at home.

W H E R E I S I T ? Located in the Farragut North Metro area of the city, it’s considered ‘the’ place to stay. With a central location, it’s within easy reach of all of the US capital’s attractions and landmarks, including the White House. R O O M S The Deluxe Suites are spacious but cosy, modern, but classic. They feature

a large bedroom, living room, bathroom with walk-in shower, a mini kitchen with a sink, plus a sizeable closet. Luxury in-room amenities make the stay at the Mayflower all the more relaxing.

F O O D A N D D R I N K During my visit the main restaurant, Edgar Bar & Kitchen, was closed due to the pandemic, but during the day, packaged foods and drinks could be purchased. The venue is named after former FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover, as it was his favourite place to dine – he ate there every night for 20 years straight. When it’s open it serves American brasserie-inspired classics with a modern twist, using local ingredients. B U S I N E S S With 27 event rooms available, there is a space for every occasion. The largest venue, the Grand Ballroom, has served as the backdrop for every Presidential Inaugural Ball, from Calvin Coolidge to Ronald Reagan, and can accommodate up to 1,000 guests. V E R D I C T The Mayflower is a luxurious home-away-from-home in the heart of the US capital city. It’s also pet friendly, which is proving popular given more people are taking staycations.
