Sky’s the limit In Dubai we always like to go the extra mile, and this is why the Guinness gurus deemed it more practical to set up an office here instead of continuing to travel back and forth every time a new world record gets smashed. The latest achievement for the city came with a bang: the 2014 New Year gala celebration featured over 500,000 fireworks, let off in a six-minute show – that’s almost 80,000 shells per minute and 1,332 fireworks per second – breaking the record for the largest display ever seen in the world. The Palm Jumeirah, the Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab were among the city’s landmarks to be incorporated into this spectacular show, and the breathtaking finale even created a ‘midnight sun’ effect, covering 94 kilometres of seafront in lights, some as big as one kilometre tall. Many of Dubai’s residents made sure not to miss this record-breaking show, and that’s probably why more than 1.6 million people used Dubai’s public transport on New Year’s night. Dubai is the only city in the Middle East to have a metro system, which has already earned its place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest driverless network in the world. In the meantime, technology and heritage are going hand in hand: as over 2.4 million followers have made H H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the seventh most-followed world leader on Twitter, this year’s Fazza Championship for Falconry, organised by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center in Al Ruwayya, witnessed record entries with over 500 participants competing in the various categories. And if you think February is only for lovers, think again. Whilst the Gelato World Tour, running from 13 to 15 February, gives us the chance to eat for two and vote for the Best Gelato of the Middle East, sports fans are also in for a treat: the world’s best tennis players are heading back to Dubai for the 22nd edition of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, one of the most popular and eagerly anticipated events on the sporting calendar, kicking off on Monday 17 February. Dubai Safari Expansion On safari! It’s full-speed ahead for the second phase of the expansion of Dubai Safari (formerly known as Dubai Zoo). Currently in Jumeira, by the end of 2014 it will be relocated to Al Warqa area. Dubai Safari is set to include African, Asian and Arabian Villages and an open safari covering 120 hectares at a cost of hectares. Developed at a cost of Dhs150 million (US$41 million), it will include a zoo, safari and butterfly park, botanical garden, resort and golf course, in addition to educational and veterinary facilities. It will also be environmentally sustainable thanks to Dubai Municipality, which has taken power consumption into consideration when designing the green project that will incorporate solar power, water recycling, waste disposal and recycling facilities.

Fashion TV’s F Café Life is a runway. And the grand opening of Fashion TV Café in Emaar Boulevard is the latest place to see and be seen in Dubai. Majestic heritage Passion, skills and tradition have been on display at the annual Fazza Championship for Falconry, with spectacular competition and a record-breaking number of participants. The most successful edition to date of the championships, organised by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Centre, has broken many records, from falcon flying speed to the number of falconers taking part in the competition – over 500. Some of the finest quality falcons from the Emirates and across the GCC competed in Ruwayyah, including the Al Horr, one of the most expensive and beautiful falcons, known for its superior hunting skills, size, speed and agility. Spectacular action and great days of falconry saw Khalfan Bin Butti (participating under the name of Hamdan Jaber) become one of the most successful falconers: competing with 25 birds, he won first place in four of the ten categories in the finals. This year’s championships, organised under the patronage of H H Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, generated wide interest and attention for this sport, and were praised for echoing the commitment of the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center to ensure the preservation of traditional Emirati activities.

Dubai Wins Major Global Congresses for 2014 International trade. The best and brightest from all over the world are flocking to Dubai for top-tier professional conferences. Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) will welcome 11 international congresses in 2014, spanning a number of strategic industry sectors, which will deliver an estimated Dhs117 million (US$32 million) economic boost for the emirate. It’s expected 12,000 international delegates and global thought leaders in their respective fields, including healthcare, transportation, legal and technology, will attend. The result: the number of international trade visitors to the emirate is expected to swell from 900,000 in 2012 up to between 1.3 and 1.9 million by the end of the decade.

Dubai Tour Tour de Dubai. The Dubai Sports Council in partnership with RCS Sports is pleased to launch the new Dubai Tour. The professional cycle race spans four days with four different stages and settings covering iconic locations in Dubai. The Downtown Stage will take place around the Burj Khalifa; the second ‘Nature’ Stage will be at the Nad Al Sheba cycle track; the third ‘New Dubai’ stage will have participants travelling across the Palm Jumeirah and other nearby locations; and the final stage, called The Old Dubai Stage, will be a race through the old and original streets of Dubai. Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships Go pro! Celebrate the 22nd year of watching the world’s best international tennis players square off in Dubai at one of the region’s most eagerly awaited events: The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. Once again the award-winning tournament will attract the world’s best players. Multiple title holders Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer will lead the charge in the men’s tournament, while the women’s will see defending champion Petra Kvitova and former title holder Caroline Wozniacki compete. Live History The Qasr Al Hosn Festival will run an exciting programme of events on the site of Abu Dhabi’s oldest structure, which dates back to the 18th Century. UAE aid to Syrian refugees More than Dhs120 million (US$32.6 million) was raised, according to KUNA, to aid Syrian refugees during an aid campaign organised by the UAE Red Crescent. In addition, the two-day ‘Our Hearts are with the Syrians’ charity telethon also raised money to help refugees suffering from freezing conditions in Syria's neighbouring countries. Dr Ibrahim El Ziq, Arabian Gulf area representative for the UN children’s fund said: “We appreciate and acknowledge the value of the UAE's ongoing and immediate response to numerous humanitarian relief campaigns worldwide.” The Red Crescent will use donations to procure relief material for the refugees from the local markets of host countries, according to their needs at the refugee camps.

he DDF Tennis Championships are about to kick off in Dubai, bringing a long list of sport stars to the city. Starting on 17 February, this event is known for the huge crowds it draws and for its exciting matches between the world's top players. Now in its 22nd edition, this championship keeps breaking spectator number records year after year. 2013 saw more than 100,000 people heading to the courts, and more than 40 million people watched the matches – televised by more than 98 international broadcasters across 59 countries – from the comfort of their home. The 2014 event is expected to top these numbers and make history once again. Last year's winner Novak Djokovic is going to be back to defend his crown, which he has won a total of four times, a task which will prove hard as world class contender and former title holder Roger Federer, who has taken the title five times in the last 11 years, is expected to try his best to rain on his parade and claim the trophy for himself once more. Defending women’s champion Petra Kvitova, world number 6, will also face another former titleholder, Danish player Caroline Wozniacki, and both are determined to put another victory under their belt. Other top ranking players scheduled to take part in the 2014 contest are: Agnieszka Radwanska, currently ranked number 4 in the world; Sara Errani,

Matching such on-court action might sound difficult, but the entertainment team always make sure that the off-court happenings are just as exciting and cater for spectators of all ages. Among the events to be held again in 2014 are the hugely popular Kids’ Days, Ladies’ Day, Fantastic Fan Day and the Catch and Win game, which sees tennis balls served into the crowd before every match and the lucky spectators who catch them going home with exciting prizes. Tickets to the finals will also be the coveted top prizes in various competitions that will be held around the Tennis Village on the first three days of the tournament. Top tennis will be on every day, from the early rounds to the finals, and no matter where you are in the Tennis Village – busy getting autographs signed, playing games, eating good food or listening to music – the big screens will make sure you won't miss any of the action. This really is one of the world's favourite tennis tournaments, not only for the many spectators but also for the players: last year the DDF Tennis Championships were named ‘ATP 500 Tournament of the Year’ for the ninth time in ten years. This honour is even more meaningful as it is voted for by the players themselves, who all commented on how much they enjoy the atmosphere of the Village, the enthusiastic and friendly crowds, the great facilities and the flawless organisation, on and off court. Past champions and fans of this tournament include high-calibre players like Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, Martina Hingis and Venus Williams.

The current brand ambassadors for the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship are top women players Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki. “Dubai has a special place in my heart,” says Wozniacki, “and being ambassador for Dubai Duty Free is a great honour: it gives me the opportunity to help promote one of my favourite destinations.” The WTA event will take place from 17 to 22 February, while the ATP event will run from 24 February to 1 March. The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free and held under the patronage of H H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. It was first held in 1993, and has made headlines ever since. In 2005, the famous friendly match between Andre Agassi and Roger Federer, played on the 321-metre-high helipad of the Burj Al Arab hotel attracted unprecedented global attention. Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of Dubai Duty Free, said: “We have been told by the ATP that the Burj Al Arab promotion was the biggest ever in tennis, and that it has been seen by half the planet.” Tickets for the event are available from the Box Office at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium. ubai’s summer evenings are perfect for a leisurely stroll through the quaint Al Fahidi Historic neighbourhood. Its cobbled streets, vintage homes, quirky wall art, intricately carved lattices and, of course, the quintessential wind tower or barjeel, look like they’ve come straight out of an Arabian Nights tale. Known for decades as Bastakiya, this historic quarter is recognised as the cultural centre of old Dubai. In fact, the beginnings of modern Dubai can be traced back to this humble area. Established at the end of the 19th century by wealthy immigrant traders from the Iranian town of Bastak, the neighbourhood is a labyrinth of narrow alleys lined with regal Arabian homes. Made of coral, gypsum and limestone, these sand-coloured structures are reminiscent of a bygone era. Stop by the Heritage House to catch a glimpse of what a rich household of the time

looked like - more than ten rooms wrapped around a central courtyard and flanked by verandahs. Now, most of the large courtyard houses with their ubiquitous wind towers have been converted into charming art galleries and inviting restaurants; an assortment of dainty shops sell spices, souvenirs and even photographs as the winding lanes buzz with tourists. We loved the House of Eastern Arts, a treasure trove of unique mementos, miniatures and one-off antiques worth investing in. It is interesting to note that in some part Al Fahidi district owes its preservation to a British architect named Rayner Otter who lived in one of the Bastakiya houses. After the discovery of oil, the merchants had moved to other neighbourhoods and the historic quarter fell into a state of neglect. It is said that that Otter started a campaign to preserve the area and also wrote to Britain's Prince Charles who was due to visit

the emirate that year. When he arrived in Dubai, Prince Charles, asked to visit Bastakiya. Here he met Otter, explored the whole area and then suggested to his hosts that Bastakiya should be preserved. Shortly after his departure the decision to demolish Bastakiya was revoked. GET AN INSIGHT The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) is Al Fahidi’s most popular tourist stop. Housed in one of the old quarter’s most elegant buildings, complete with decorative walls and intricate wooden lattice, the centre gives visitors a rare opportunity to meet with Emiratis and learn about their culture and heritage. Sit back within the cushioned Majlis and help yourself to Arabic coffee and dates while these warm hosts provide cultural insights. Brunches, lunches and dinners are available - the centre is a great place to tuck into some of the most authentic Arabic cuisine. Shed the calories by registering for SMCCU’s guided walking tours of the historical district. HISTORY LESSON Stepping into Al Fahidi is akin to making a tryst with history. Dubai Museum’s life-size dioramas vividly depict life in the emirate before the discovery of oil. At the Coin Museum, view more than 470 rare coins dating back to the early Islamic caliphates. You can also see the last remaining section of the Wall of Old Dubai at Al Fahidi. Constructed in 1800 from gypsum and coral, the defensive wall surrounded the old town of Bur Dubai, which included Al Fahidi fort and the old Grand Mosque. A PROPENSITY FOR ART It’s only fitting that the culture laden Al Fahidi district is today home to some of the city’s most popular art galleries. Leading the art bandwagon is the XVA Gallery. Named by FEbRuaRY 2014

Condé Nast Traveller as one of Dubai’s cannot-miss-spots, XVA has pioneered contemporary Middle Eastern art in the city. While exuding a modern chic ambience, XVA’s contents and setting both speak of their Arab roots. The gallery was the home of the Siddiqui family for more than 00 years. In 2003, American Mona Hauser renovated the crumbling building and set up XVA. The gallery is also the organizer of the Bastakiya Art Fair, Dubai’s only fringe art fair which includes exhibitions by individual participants, galleries and Internationally-acclaimed curators. The villa-turned-Majlis Gallery is the oldest commercial art gallery in Dubai. Owned by Alison Collins, this courtyard house was Collins’ home for over a decade. In 1979, a painter passing by Dubai wanted to exhibit his collection of oil paintings. Alison intervened and put up the paintings in her living room — the Majlis. The henna tree in the sunny courtyard, furniture carved from mango wood, displays of antique jewellery and pretty postcards, miniature dolls that spill out from boxes and glass sculptures hung from trees whisk visitors into a realm of mysticism. Al Fahidi’s reputation as Dubai’s creative quarter is only growing. The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature recently moved its headquarters there, while the Sikka Art Fair also regularly uses the site to showcase local talent. It’s also widely regarded as the perfect launch pad for an artistic career; the Delfina Foundation offers artists up to three-month residencies at Al Fahidi’s House 44 along with studio space at House 11. MAKE A DIFFERENCE Walking around Bastakiya, the bright quirky hand-painted sofas of Villa 28 will surely grab your attention. Mawaheb from Beautiful People is an art studio where people with special needs use art as a tool to develop life skills and become more independent. Purchasing a Mawaheb art work will not only add character and colour to your home but will also encourage these special artists. Choose from paintings, cards, mosaic picture frames and candle holders, crockery, 30

beach and gift bags. Mawaheb’s talented team is also happy to undertake commissioned art. CULTURAL BITES Apart from shopping, art hunting and a slice of history, Al Fahidi is a great place to tuck into some authentic local fare. We highly recommend the camel burger on the Local House Restaurant’s menu – a huge hit with residents and tourists alike, as is the camel milk shake with chocolate. Research also says that camel meat has anti-oxidants that help fight cancer. So dig in! For less intrepid taste buds, the Bastakiya Nights restaurant is ideal. Head to the courtyard house just after sunset for a relaxed evening of shisha, fresh mezze and delicious kebabs. THE ART HOTEL The boutique XVA Art Hotel and Café comes with huge dollops of art and history. Muted earth tones livened up with a splash of colourful rugs, sequinned cushions and oil lamps, the hotel’s nine rooms are definitely different from the ostentatious, bling-clad 5-star offerings Dubai is famous for. The hotel also encourages bon homie – the rooms have no television (there’s free wifi though) and two expansive courtyards with wicker chairs and tables set under the trees amidst sculptures and other works of art are only conducive to conversation. dv

Would you give up TV or Internet in your hotel in return for a good cup of Java? A recent survey of some 7,455 people in six countries – including 1,100 from Dubai – revealed that 55 per cent would forgo TV and 18 per cent would give up Internet access for a perfect cup of coffee. The findings of the Le Meridien Hotels and Resorts study revealed that coffee remains the number one necessity for global travellers. The survey covered travellers in the USA, France, China, Germany, the UAE and India. Some 26% of the Dubai-based respondents admitted that they reach out for a coffee first thing in the morning, rather than to their spouse or pets. Some 99% said they have to have coffee during long meetings; while 80% said they drink coffee to be more sociable and 71% to be more creative… These respondents will be pleased to hear that the French hotel chain plans to launch a Master Barista initiative by the end of the year, in collaboration with its global coffee partner illy and master barista Fritz Storm… Located in the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa, the world’s first Armani Hotel has been crowned World’s Leading Landmark Hotel. Designed right down to the most minute of detail by the king of minimalist fashion design, the hotel received its latest accolade at the World Travel Awards, 2013. The elegant and gracious hotel is part of the 700-plus-metre-high tower developed by Emaar Properties. Emaar opened a second Armani Hotel in Milan a few years ago and is looking at opening others in key global cities. Those travelling to the Big Apple soon will appreciate the recent move to pedestrianise the popular Times Square, removing the iconic yellow cans and buses from the area. The first stage of the US$55 million (Dhs202 million) reconstruction project to make the popular area safer and more convenient for pedestrians is almost complete. As part of the largest redesign of Times Square in decades, the pedestrianisation of the area stretching from 42nd to 47th street will create new public piazzas and spaces. Some 400,000 pedestrians are believed to pound the square daily. According to former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who instigated the project, the temporary changes have already increased footfall and reduced traffic injuries, and businesses have recorded a growth in customers. Architects Snohetta, working along with landscape architects Mathews Nielson and engineers Weidinger, will soon open a second traffic-free piazza new year. The complete transformation from a busy traffic-congested area to walking-only zone will be finished by 2016. This year Belgian fashion designer/entrepreneur Diane von Furstenberg is celebrating the 40th anniversary of her iconic ‘wrap dress’. New airliNe facility takiNg shape at DXB a purpose-built new concourse and renovation programme will provide Dubai International’s passengers and airlines with a more efficient and memorable experience.

Concourse D, the new home for the more than 100 airlines that fly from Dubai International - continues to take shape and is on track to open early next year. Simultaneously the refurbishment of Terminal 1 is now well underway. Some 20 departures gates and a extensive array of retail and f&b facilities will be housed in this state-of-the-art new facility that will be linked to the refurbished Terminal 1 via an elevated rail link when completed in early 2015. With a capacity of 18 million passengers, the opening of Concourse D is vital in ensuring that Dubai International continues to accommodate its growth in passenger traffic, expected to surpass 100 million passengers a year in 2020. Construction of Concourse D achieved a major milestone recently with recently a new combined maintenance facility was also inaugurated. Operated by dnata, the new maintenance building is designed to service some of the largest ground support vehicles at Dubai International including the emirates flight Catering trucks that serve the expanding a380 fleet. The former maintenance facility is to be demolished to make way for new aircraft stands and apron for Concourse D. The opening of this new maintenance facility also paves the way for the relocation of foreign carrier maintenance into their permanent home at Concourse D at apron level during the second quarter of 2015. at the same time work on the new elevated rail link connecting Concourse D to Terminal 1 is on track. “The construction is now well underway and we expect to see completion of the elevated rail link by around the end of the first quarter of 2014,” says Omair Imran, Terminal Development Manager responsible for Concourse D. “Completion of the rail link will allow for the installation of rail systems such as signalling, communications, power and track points control by the manufacturer and supplier bombardier and we expect the first train, in its new Dubai airports livery, to be delivered and lifted into position in the second quarter of 2014.” In Terminal 1 work is underway in the landside arrivals hall where arrivals area is being completely revamped to improve passenger flow. These include a larger meet and greet area as well as a completely new retail environment with revamped food and beverage outlets. The front of the terminal building is also being expanded to create a new indoor taxi waiting area and prevision for a dedicated reception area for tour groups. Work on the departures area and the train station in Terminal 1 is also expected to begin shortly.

The station will be located close to the existing security screening area in Terminal 1, providing a quick link to the new concourse. Once the station has been commissioned, the tunnel linking Terminal 1 to Concourse C will be closed. The extensive refurbishment programme will provide Dubai International with a more modern and efficient Terminal 1 in line with the standards being built in Concourse D, providing passengers with a vastly improved more enjoyable efficient travel experience.

Glorious results dubai duty Free registered another record-breaking end of year, with total sales for 2013 of dhs6.65 billion (uS$1.8 billion), an impressive 11.4% increase over 2012. On 20 december ddF celebrated its 30th anniversary, and customers shared the joyful event by enjoying discounts of up to 30% on a range of products, resulting in 215,000 recorded transactions, a new daily record of dhs111.88 million (uS$30.65 million) – 40% higher than 2012 – and a new monthly record for december of dhs700 million (uS$192 million). Green days ireland’s Taoiseach, Enda Kenny T.d. visited The irish Village restaurant in Garhoud, on the occasion of his stay in the uaE as part of a high-profile trade and investment mission. This visit was headed by the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) together with Richard bruton T.d., ireland's Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and innovation, and attracted a huge number of irish companies keen to strengthen commercial ties with the Gulf region. Kenny officially inaugurated the extension of the popular irish Village, accompanied by Patrick Hennessey, the irish ambassador to the uaE, and was greeted by Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of dubai duty Free, George Horan, President of dubai duty Free, and some of the many irish nationals employed at the venue. The irish Village is part of ddF’s portfolio of leisure venues and frequently hosts live concerts and performances by famous irish artists, such as bob Geldof, Mary black, Sharon Shannon, dara O'briain and Tommy Tiernan. is there a pool of UaE singing talent waiting to be discovered? Most definitely; Emiratis love art. In every society you will find someone with a great singing voice, but that is nothing without the passion; and there is an endless amount of talent, creativity and passion for music in the UAE.

any advice to someone wanting to pursue your career?

Prima Donna Soprano Sara Al-Qaiwani, the first opera singer from the UAE, speaks to dv about music, travelling and her career's highlights so far.

ara Al-Qaiwani is the first Emirati national to become a professional opera singer. Fluent in four languages and with a series of impressive academic achievements under her belt, she could not forget her love for music and is now concentrating on her international singing career. The singer was in the UAE recently, performing both in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, where dv applauded her soprano voice and took the chance to catch up.

When did you know that singing was what you wanted to do?

It is probably a tie between two: singing at the Opera Garnier in Paris for the Expo 2020 bid was huge, as it is such a big building for any opera singer to walk in to; and singing Puccini for the 39th National Day at the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which was a very poignant moment for me.

It was more a case of not being able to stop the musical part of myself. I did a chemistry degree at the Imperial College London, and a Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and a PhD at LSE, but as I had the chance to train with internationally renowned vocal coaches things became more serious â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and after singing in the UAE for the first time a whole new world of connections and experiences opened up to me.

Who is your inspiration, if you have one? My mother: she is the strongest person I know.

Why did you choose this genre over more mainstream ones? I think the voice chooses the genre, not the other way around. Also, intellectually there is an entire world of language, literature, poetry and philosophy behind 74

What was the first piece you performed for an audience? It was an aria from Mozart's CosĂŹ Fan Tutte, and I was singing the part of Despina.

What has been your most memorable concert so far?

Do you have a singer you would love to sing with? I love so many singers, it is hard to choose. Tenor Jonas Kauffman and soprano Diana Damrau are wonderful. And of course Placido Domingo. If only I were so lucky!

How do you prepare before a concert? Opera singers are like athletes in the way in which they have to monitor their food intake, exercise, and keep the body superrelaxed. I had to learn that through Yoga and Tai-Chi. Drinking a lot of water and being aware of room temperature and humidity is also very important.

Be disciplined and make sure you are comfortable on stage. Opera singing is a performing art and it can be lonely at times, especially when travelling, but if you feel that your voice is meant to be heard, just follow your instinct and believe in yourself.

Living in London, what do you miss of the UaE? My family, as I am very close to my parents. Also the weather and walking down the beach.

You travel a lot: how do you overcome jetlag? I try to push my body into the local time zone as soon as I land, I drink a lot of water and I try to upgrade to business class, because there I can sleep, and that helps a lot.

Where do you travel to, when you want to relax? Dubai! I love being at home, going to a spa or just walking on the beach. My cousin lives in Paris, so I also like to visit her; being with family is the best way to relax for me.

How do you explore a new city? I usually take the first day to do nothing: I sit in a coffee shop, I look at the people walking by and I take in the atmosphere. Then I slowly start to walk around, visiting the museums, the landmarks: I love beautiful buildings.

What are the things you can't fly without? Water, a hand cream and comfortable flight socks.

Do you have a favourite spot in Dubai? I really love sitting on the terrace at Mina A' Salam in Madinat Jumeirah; visiting the Burj Khalifa, because it is so amazing; and walking in the old traditional souks near the Creek. dv
