EDITOR’S LETTER

MY GOOD PAL ELLY REILLY...

... EA extraordinaire, and quite possibly the most organised person I know, is a stickler for planning. For me, planning is a concept as foreign as going for a walk in Dubai or fuelling your own car (you haven’t done in ages, and you’re unlikely to do it any time soon). Elly even bought me a diary for my 34th birthday, emblazoned with my initials on to entice me to plan better, but alas it sits barely opened on my bedside table. Don’t get me wrong, at work I’m fine (*disgruntled noises from the production team across the other side of the office*) but socially, I’m totally inept. This, I feel, should have been considered when, along with a group of friends, I planned my first ever road trip to Fujairah about 10 years ago. Or didn’t plan it, as the case may be. The idea was simple enough – drive to Snoopy Island, hang out for a couple of days, snorkel, camp, and generally do what residents of the UAE do when enjoying a weekend in Fujairah. Easy. Unfortunately, a lack of planning meant we couldn’t actually find Snoopy Island. I know, I know, who can’t find Snoopy Island?, I hear you judge. Well me, that’s who. I didn’t have Google Maps at the time and was using an old crinkly map that my boss gave me. Then, when we finally arrived at the beach, someone (me) hadn’t brought the tent for sleeping in, meaning we had to lie on the beach exposed to the elements… for two days. To make matters worse the resort that I was told by hardened UAE campers would rent kayaks and snorkels to us was closed for renovations, which we would have known, had we actually planned the trip. If you’re going on a road trip, plan it first. A great way to start is by reading our guide to the best country-wide road trips (p17). In it you’ll find out how to make the most of an adventure, whether it’s just for an afternoon or even longer. Perfect planning. Elly would be proud. Enjoy the issue,

C

ovid-19 has taught us all a very important lesson on the power and importance of connection. This pandemic has brought out the very best in humans and bonded us together with a very unique and historic shared experience. It’s that shared experience that What’s On, in partnership with hygiene giants Fine, want to capture. We’d love you to share your lockdown experiences with us, from the good, the bad, the surprising to the mundane and we’ll select 10 families, couples,

housemates and singletons and share their stories in a special feature. You’ll receive a hamper filled with a selection of Fine’s best hygiene products as well as your own doorstep photographs for you to remember this historic time: the dodgy home haircuts, the frazzled look of juggling homeschool and work, the bulk-buying of sanitiser, the moment where families were given the opportunity to be around each other for longer than a holiday – we want to hear from you.

If you’d like to be considered for the What’s On Doorstep Diaries powered by Fine, please email stuart.norbury@motivate.ae. The deadline to submit your stories is Thursday September 10.

Meet the Mansons, Maricel Narciso and Flash Here’s their story… “At first, all of us being together was quite exciting. But that quickly turned to frustration and fear. We received news of friends ill in the UK after contracting the virus and that made us realise the severity of the situation. I could see it taking its toll on the kids and I knew we had to do something to bring life back into the house. Inspired by friends, we contacted the UAE Little Angels shelter and suddenly we had nine dogs in the house: husky Nina and her eight fourday-old puppies. Nina had been through a lot of abuse, but after some TLC, she came to trust the whole family. The dogs became our family mission. We made charts for them, named them, and we couldn’t have done any of this without our incredible nanny Maricel. As those husky pups grew, the play areas had to be built bigger and higher. They’d love to escape and run around the house, hiding in all sorts of place, while we ran around after them. It was crazy but incredibly fun and the blood, sweat, tears and poop was so worth it. Now all of them, including Nina, have gone to loving homes. Well, all except one – our beautiful Flash.”

AFTERNOON EXCURSIONS Looking for something to fill several hours on a lazy afternoon?

Sharjah

BEST FOR

AN INJECTION OF CULTURE

What’s on offer: This emirate is recognised as the cultural capital of the UAE, and for good reason: There are more than a dozen museums and galleries here, including the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization and Sharjah Heritage Museum. What’s On’s favourite is the Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF), which showcases a myriad of conceptual works by both emerging and established artists. The exhibition space itself is visually stunning, connected by open-air courtyards and roof-top terraces. It’s wonderful to walk around breathing in the heritage of Sharjah. Save time to check out SAF’s Insta spectacle that is the Rain Room, an art project on permanent display that allows you to move through rain without getting wet. Essential kit: Sunscreen and comfy shoes – it’s a fair walk between all the museums. Directions: Follow the E11 to S115 (Al Taawun Street) in Sharjah. Continue to Al Taawun Street and you’ll see the Rain Room installation ahead. Travel time: 45 minutes (traffic dependent) q sharjahart.org

INDIANA JONES FANS

Mleiha What’s on offer: The UAE may be a young country but its historical sites are otherworldly. Take a road trip to Mleila and learn a whole host of information about settlers in the region during the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze, Iron, pre-Islamic, Islamic and modern ages. You’ll be able to explore the remains of a 70-million-year-old sea bed and find ancient fossils, explore excavated Bedouin sites, and climb into age-old caves. There’s also a fancy museum, where you can organise guided tours for your group. If you’ve brought an SUV, and have the confidence to drive off-road, there’s nowhere better to do it in the UAE than here, up and down over the rolling red dunes around Fossil Rock. Essential kit: Comfy shoes, bottle of water, sunscreen, tire pressure gauge (for off-roading). Directions: Take the 611 towards Sharjah. Turn right onto the SharjahKalba Road, then follow the signs for the Mleila Archaeological Centre. Travel time: 1 hour q discovermleiha.ae What’sOn_19

DAY TRIPS Days to remember out and about in the UAE

Snoopy Island, Fujairah What’s on offer: The reason most people come to Fujairah is to swim, snorkel, or scuba around Snoopy Island, which sits about 164 feet offshore. Affectionately named after its resemblance to the cartoon character sleeping on the roof of his dog house, the little island’s rocky bottom is home to a variety of fish. It’s not uncommon to spot black-tip reef sharks or turtles around the area, too. An ideal spot for an afternoon, active folk can scuba and snorkel, while others can sunbathe on the beach. You can also opt for a day pass (Dhs130 for adults, Dhs80 for children) at the charming Sandy Beach Hotel giving you access to its new infinity pool. 20_What’s On

Staying for dinner? Pay a visit to Gonu Bar and BEST FOR WATERSPORTS Grill and Le Meridien ENTHUSIASTS Al Aqah Beach Resort, just down the road. It’s as close to a Sri Lankan beach shack as you’ll get here, and the Omani lobster is excellent. Essential kit: Swimwear, sunscreen, towel, flip flops, and a waterproof camera. Directions: Easy peasy. Follow the winding path of Khorfakkan Road (E99) straight to Fujairah, through the many new tunnels. Then at the shark roundabout, make U-turn and Sandy Beach Hotel is the last on your left. Travel time: Approximately two hours from Dubai q sandybeachhotel.ae

Hatta, Dubai

BEST FOR OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

What’s on offer? A leisurely drive through the Hajar mountains and you’ll arrive in picture-perfect Hatta, Dubai’s latest outdoor adventure hub. Surrounded by mountains and filled with turquoise water, the Hatta Dam is great for (dog-friendly!) kayaking. You can also attempt the 31-mile Hatta Mountain Bike Trail or a 6.2-mile hike past Hatta Heritage village. It feels almost like proper nature. In October, the Wadi Hub activity centre reopens with a high ropes course for kids, zorbing, a giant drop slide and axe-throwing. Essential kit: Good trainers, a water bottle, and (ideally) your dog. Directions: Take the E44 and then E611 to the SharjahKalbah road. You’ll know you’ve made it when you see the big Hollywood-esque sign for Hatta on the top of one of the mountains. Travel time: 90 minutes from Dubai q visithatta.com

Kite Beach Center, UAQ

BEST FOR

BUDGET – BUT BRILLIANT – DAYS OUT WITH YOUR DOG

What’s on offer: This wonderful dog-friendly beach club has swiftly become the UAE’s most beloved hidden gem. Its straw umbrellas and haphazard beach huts give the venue a rustic charm. There’s a huge food menu, with plenty of watersport activities available. But most people come to lounge on the blue beanbags, while letting their dogs play in the sea. Sometimes, there’s even live music on the beach, just to add to the holiday vibes. Entrance fees are a steal: Dhs25/50 for adults on weekdays/weekends and Dhs75 per dog. Essential kit: Swimwear, flip-flops, sunscreen, poop bags, leash, and a dog. Directions: Get on the E111 to Umm Al Quwain – Al Shuwaib Road. Take exit 90 from the E111. Continue on the Um Al Quwain-Al Shuwaib Road until you reach Kite Beach Center. Travel time: 1 hour and 5 minutes from Dubai

THE CYCLE BISTRO

This second branch of the paleo-minded eatery continues to put nutritious food first here’s something reassuring about going out for a meal when you know the food you’re going to eat is good for you. The Cycle Bistro, part of The Cycle Hub, has enjoyed success with its paleo dining concept in Motor City since 2013, and a new branch in Jumeirah hopes to follow in its healthy footsteps. The beautiful custom-built space next to Town Centre mall is home to the bistro, a large retail space and bike workshop. The decor fuses a contemporary, industrial feel in the cycle shop with vibrant patterned tiles, modern furniture, and floor-to-ceiling windows in the bistro. The contrast subtly separates the two

areas while maintaining the overall hub vibe which works really well in this large double-storey space. We head there at the weekend for a late breakfast and there’s a steady buzz of diners and shoppers inside. The staff welcome us like old friends and we let our waiter recommend some dishes from the new menu. We opt to share the ‘go nuts bowl (Dhs55) and the sweet potato Benedict (Dhs55). The nutty bowl is brimming with almond butter and chia parfait, coconut, date and mixed nut granola, and caramelized banana chips, and is topped with strawberries. It’s smooth but full of texture and would make a great refuel meal after a workout. The Benedict really hits the spot, too. We enjoy every mouthful of sweet potato fondant, crushed avocado, sautéed spinach, poached eggs, tomato affair sauce (we’re not sure either, but it’s tangy and tastes great) and charred beef bacon.

We ask for our eggs to be medium but they turn up soft. No biggie for us as we don’t mind the gooeyness but we’d have preferred them a bit more ‘done’. To finish, we order some paleo-tella pancakes. It’s a good job we’re sharing as this is a substantial portion. Made from coconut and almond flour, it comes as one large pancake rather than a stack, and it’s light and fluffy with a rich dark chocolate and strawberry topping that adds just the right amount of sweetness. This place really is a hub of activity. The food is creative and delicious, and we’ll definitely be back to work our way through the guiltfree menu. a Town Centre mall, Jumeirah, Sun to Thur 8am to 7pm and Fri to Sat 8am to 6pm. HANAMI

After a fleeting springtime opening, this Japanese stunner is back in bloom… ou have to feel for the team at Hanami. No sooner had they opened the doors to their restaurant in the Andaz Hotel than Dubai was plunged into lockdown. Fast-forward a few months, and this sleek Tokyo-inspired bolthole is finally getting its rightful time in the sun. Hanami takes its name from the Japanese custom of viewing cherry blossoms in spring, and this motif subtly weaves its way into the decor. Geisha murals and neon signs lead into the dimly lit dining room, where sculptural light fittings and textured ‘trunks’ add an elegant sense of whimsy.

Floor-to-ceiling windows and a wraparound terrace capitalise on Dubai’s iconic sights, sweeping from Dubai Marina to Burj Khalifa on a clear day. When social distancing rules ease off, a seat at the sushi bar promises front-row culinary action, but for now there’s really no bad seat in the house, with intimate nooks and well-spaced tables taking advantage of those vistas. Hanami’s menu is equally alluring, delivering a refined take on Japanese street food. We hand over the ordering reins to our waiter, Liam, who kicks things off with a bowl of robata-grilled edamame (Dhs33), served with garlic oil and nubs of crunchy fried garlic. We’re still licking our fingers when he returns with the maguro pizza (Dhs105), a light-on-its-feet combination of tuna sashimi, tomato, pickled onion and kimchi cream over a crisp tortilla base. Juicy ebi gyoza (Dhs61) are beautifully presented on a little bundle of twigs, with an umami-rich oyster mayo for dipping. A sushi platter arrives in a plume of

dry ice, bearing a standout unagi maki (Dhs88) filled with teriyaki eel, avocado, cucumber and a smoky-sweet Kawasaki sauce. Less impressive was the sake avocado maki (Dhs80), the delicate salmon overshadowed by an intense truffle mayo. Things return to fine form with the burokkori (Dhs50), a showstopping vegetable dish of stir-fried broccolini, shimeji and enoki mushrooms, topped with curls of bonito flakes. For the final savoury course, we sink our teeth into a brilliant wagyu katsu bun (Dhs143). The thick, tender slab of pankocrumbed striploin comes in a pillowy riceflour bun, fresh from the bakery at Locale downstairs. To finish, we’re served the eponymous Hanami dessert (Dhs55). Like an edible bonsai garden, it features a delicate chocolate tree, a chocolate sphere filled with mousse and yuzu curd, matcha ‘moss’, lemon blossom jelly, and yuzu sorbet. It’s a celebration of textures and subtle flavours. The same attention to detail is on show at the bar, offering an extensive sake selection, plus cocktails named after Tokyo neighbourhoods, such as the refreshing, zippy Ginza (Dhs70), with shiso-infused sake, gin, elderflower and yuzu. Hanami may have had something of a false start back in March, but with its stunning decor, stellar cuisine and switched-on service, this Palm Jumeirah restaurant is now in full bloom. a Hanami, Andaz Dubai The Palm, Palm Jumeirah, Mon to Sat 6pm to 11pm. LUIGIA

(Still) the best of Italy in Dubai? We’ll be the judge… uigia opened its doors at tourist hotspot the Rixos Premium JBR in 2018 with the promise of bringing ‘the best of Italy’ to Dubai, and almost immediately, it garnered fans across the city, gaining a reputation for its amazing pizza and use of authentic Italian ingredients across its rather extensive menu. After a brief pandemic closure, it’s back and ready for action. We head inside to see if it’s still top of its game. A warning to those who’ve not visited Luigia before – this isn’t your typically quaint Italian trattoria. The décor is bright and, dare we say, a little brash, with double height ceilings, heavy red window drapes and theatrical light displays, all creating a loud and lively atmosphere. We’re there for a Wednesday date night and are looking forward to some down-toearth Italian grub. Once we’ve settled in to a cosy booth in the large dining area with open pizza kitchen, our waiter Stefano recommends a couple of sharing antipasti dishes to get us started.

Words: Sarah Henson

L

The burrata pugliese (Dhs 130) is accompanied by large slices of juicy oxtail tomato and a basil garnish, plus a big basket of crusty bread to slather it on. It’s deliciously moreish and as creamy as it should be, but at a whopping 300 grams, this family-size slab of cheese is far too much for two of us to finish. Our other sharing plate, the polpettine napoletane (Dhs 70), is a dish of beautifully seasoned and non-greasy veal meatballs, covered in a simple tomato sauce topped with pecorino romano cheese. Bravissimo. When it comes to the mains, we go for the paccheri al ragu napoletano (Dhs 90) and a Stromboli pizza (Dhs 95). The pasta arrives first. Large tubes of al dente pasta are mixed with perfectly braised chunks of beef in a traditional ragout sauce. We’d have liked a little more of the melt-in-the mouth beef but this dish is still a winner. Choosing a pizza at Luigia isn’t easy. We count eight varieties of Margherita pizza on the menu and over 30 other choices of topping. The Stromboli features homemade spicy Angus sausage, tomato sauce, Fior di Latte cheese, sweet roasted peppers and Granda Padano. This is one of the lightest pizzas we’ve ever had, apparently due to the 56-72 hour resting time for the dough.

We’re pretty stuffed by now, but it’s hard to say no to the Luigia tiramisu and profiterole desserts. And, oh, the tiramisu. Italian poems should be written about this delightful dish. Fluffy, rich sponge with just the right amount of coffee so it doesn’t overpower. The profiteroles don’t disappoint either, but by this point, we need a lie down. Luigia is a great place to reconnect with friends and family over seriously delicious Italian food. You might not get the feeling of sitting in nonna’s front room, but the service and the lively atmosphere will make you feel right at home. a Rixos Premium JBR, Sun to Thur 5.30pm to midnight and Fri to Sat 12.30pm to midnight. FOUQUET’S ABU DHABI This is Paris, with a little Middle Eastern flex

rt and gastronomy are two pleasures that are often delivered better with a French accent. That’s why we’re grateful to that little corner of Saadiyat Island that’s proudly flying a spiritual tricolore. We collectively ‘oohed’ at the arrival of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, but we saved the ‘la-las’ for when we heard about another Parisian import arriving just next door. Fouquet’s Abu Dhabi landed with a menu designed in collaboration with Pierre Gagnaire, the same top chef responsible for the food at the Champs-Elysées based Fouquet’s. So it’s with great expectations that we find ourselves being ferried by golf buggy from the parking area to the restaurant’s access point. And because Fouquet’s sits within the shadow of the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s grand canopy, contemplation continues as we check through a few more security steps than your typical dining date requires. Once inside, the interiors strike an immediately Gallic tone. This is Paris, with a little Middle Eastern flex. Blanched walls and table settings stand in deliberate contrast with the stylish crimson seating (an homage perhaps, to the Parisian restaurant’s famous red awnings). We order a selection of starters from our knowledgeable waiter. Before we settle on the choice for our main dishes, we’re greeted by a sizzling plate of Burgundy snails in garlic butter; prawns paired with avocado, pink grapefruit and egg mimosa;

A

and duck foie gras terrine, date chutney, and toasted rustic bread. You’d probably have to take a plane before you find a snail dish that fits so snugly with the traditional archetype. They are note-perfect here. The pink grapefruit and egg mimosa help uncover hidden depths in the prawn entree and the daubs of date chutney are more than just a charming regional foil to their foie gras pairing. They belong. For the plats principaux, our waiter directs us towards pan-seared salmon fillet, a popular choice amongst the restaurant’s faithful; and braised lamb shoulder, served with green lentil hummus flavored with curry paste. Whilst it’s true that the UAE isn’t lacking in strong salmon dishes, there are few we’ve tried that can match Fouquet’s finesse. A perfect fillet, subtle in tone, with the honest fleshy flavour of wild salmon, neatly echoed by a velvety butternut velouté. But the real grand dame of the brasserie is the lamb shoulder. A taste expedition that begins with a stroll

down Avenue Victor Hugo but crosses purposefully into the souks of old Abu Dhabi. The lamb is tender and breaks effortlessly beneath the fork, cooked in the classic French style, but is given a poetic palate reimagining by the swathes of nutty, precisely-spiced hummus. We end the meal with a trio of desserts, because all great art should be finished with a flourish. We try the coconut tapioca with pistachio parfait; Fouquet’s chocolate biscuit; and mille-feuilles with praline and carmelised hazelnuts. It’s an appropriate way to drop the curtain and call ‘fin’ on this meal. This is a fine-dining restaurant in the most faithful of ways, and going a la carte means there’s a price tag to match. But you can explore the cuisine quite freely with Fouquet’s keenly-priced lunchtime and dinner set menus from Dhs210. a Fouquet’s, next to Louvre Abu Dhabi, Sun to Wed noon to 11pm, Thu to Sat noon to 11.30 pm. Where should you turn for sweaty relief? Clearly House of Pops is what you need...

W

ith respect to Willis Haviland Carrier, the inventor of modern air conditioning, popsicles have become the best way to cool down during a sweltering summer. And while you can get by making your own, we found the most wonderful ice lolly brand while scouring Deliveroo for extra cool treats. Partners in life and business, Mazen and Marcela run this online ice lolly shop. They launched just two years ago with a mission of bringing the UAE a healthier alternative to the refined sugar-packed, preservative-heavy ice creams flooding the supermarkets.

Their line of hand-crafted vegan pops featuring only five ingredients, with fruit outranking all, makes these little chilly wonders essentially just ‘fruit-on-a-stick’. “We wanted to be a company that not only serves a healthier ice cream alternative, but one that also is eco-friendly and gives back to the earth,” explains Marcela. “House of Pops has pledged to use

plastic-free packaging, made up of materials that go beyond being recycled to being biodegradable and compostable, replenishing the earth with a soil nutrient when they degrade.” The flavours at House of Pops are vast, ranging from mango and raspberry to coconut, lime mint and strawberry at Dhs20 each. There’s also a brand new

summer pop special collection (Dhs25 each), which includes combo flavours such as mango chia, coconut strawberry, and chocolate banana. From September, House of Pops will have two physical locations (at the new Khawaneej Mall, and on Kite beach) but for now, directly order via instagram. com/houseofpops.ae or visit Deliveroo.ae

Fine dining for kids at Doors A fancy palate takes time to build up, and it never hurts to start them young. The team at Doors Freestyle Grill is paving the way for better-quality children’s menus in restaurants. On its new menu you’ll find a range of fun but top quality dishes including The Maze Runner (a barbecue Wagyu beef shawarma), the wildfire fiery chicken, and pollo asado (baby chicken stuffed with rice), alongside a selection of wacky mocktails. a Al Seef, Dubai, near Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Secret Brunch at the Ritz

Secret Parties continue their quest for brunch domination…

J

ust when you thought Secret Parties would be all brunched out, they pull another one out of the bag. The brand’s events have become synonymous with a good time, packed with entertainment, drinks stations and food. Their new one at the Ritz is no different. The new Gatsby-themed brunch takes place at Cafe Belge in Ritz Carlton DIFC and What’s On went along to the launch. The brunch begins with a sparkling welcome drink. The first of four generous courses featured a huge seafood platter complete with Insta-worthy dry ice moat and every slice of raw and cooked seafood you could ask for. Next up on the sharing menu were four light yet tasty starters. This included a flavourful prawn roll with super soft bread and Belgian veal meatballs in a moreish complementary sauce (perfect for dipping the bread into). Out of all the Secret Brunches, this menu is by far our favourite, so hats off to the kitchen at Cafe Belge for producing such a great selection.

The mains arrive at around 3pm and then the entertainment rolls out in full force. As we’re tucking into our tender medium-cooked beef striploin, flapper girls twirl around us wafting feathers in an elegant fashion. If we weren’t too busy eyeing up the giant bucket of moules à la crème and truffle parmesan fries, we might’ve got up to dance with them. It’s worth pointing out that this venue is incredibly summer-proof. Whether inside or out, all tables remained at the perfect temperature thanks to a scientific/ architectural miracle in the courtyard. Naturally, the party begins to make its way outdoors, where a masked DJ takes a centre spot, and branded drinks stations line the courtyard. The brunch also comes with a staycation package, priced at Dhs650, including the brunch, breakfast in bed and pool access the next day. a Ritz Carlton DIFC, Fri, 1pm to 5pm, Dhs295 soft drinks, Dhs395 house drinks. secret-parties.com

By your own standards, are you surprised by the success of Pickl? It’s taken a lot of hard work to get to this point. We’ve been blessed to build such an awesome team that live and breath all things Pickl – without them this would never have gotten the traction it has. What do you love about your Pickl customers? Our core, die hard fans. It’s been great to be able to reach the hearts (and stomachs) of so many people, most of whom have become close friends. What do you most love about your city? My family has been here for 26 years. I grew up with Dubai, got to know all the little nuances that make it special to me. What does the future hold? By the end of 2020 we should have eight Pickls, with our eyes set on some fun international expansions. We want to show the world what a homegrown Dubai brand can do. q eatpickl.com

Is the moshpit a thing of the past? When can we hit the dancefloor again?

Dan Bolton

54_What’s On

W

hen it comes to entertainment, Dan Bolton is one of the most switched on industry experts in the UAE. From the creation, design and delivery of live events to managing a whole range of talented artists – think musicians, dancers, acrobats, DJs, and so much more – his Dan Bolton Creative Management Agency has been at the epicentre of some of the most talked about gigs in the country. We ask Dan to reflect on 2020 so far and predict the months ahead…

Your reaction when the Coronavirus pandemic hit and wiped out live events? It was like being hit by a truck. In the events industry we plan for every scenario but this time the problem was way bigger than anything we could solve. My team and I slowly started to put some plans in place to manage the situation the best we could given that none of us had ever been faced with a challenge like this before. How did you use your time during lockdown? We started working as a team on making plans for the time when it’s possible to return to live events and performances again, working with partners on health and safety guidelines, speaking to DTCM, speaking to clients, updating our websites and even launching a podcast. We did all the things we often never get time to do as we are so busy in the delivery of a project. What advice did you give to artists on your roster during that time? The advice we gave was “this is only temporary”. This is not a new normal.

People will always want social interactions and when the pandemic is over, which it will be one day, live events and entertainment will be as important as ever. How are things looking up for the UAE’s entertainment sector? The entertainment sector will bounce back but we have to appreciate it’s going to take some time. Music, performance and culture are vitally important to our existence. The good thing is we are probably in one of the places in the world that will DJ Adam Aldous bounce back faster and safer than anywhere else so we are open, as social distancing is almost all eager to play our part in making that an impossibility within a club. The happen and support Dubai’s tourism, interesting thing is the current pressure events and entertainment industries building within us where we really get back on their feet. want to start enjoying these experiences It will take time to get to 15,000 again. I’ve been out to a few venues audiences again but it will happen. recently and as the music starts to Audience confidence will return as long pump you can really see that people are as we show people we are doing things having to control themselves. People safely, correctly and creatively. love music and they love to dance. We will be hitting the dancefloor again How soon do you think clubbing will sometime soon. return to normal in the UAE? I think this will be amongst the last What’s your advice to venues and segments of the industry to repromoters on how to attract cashconscious customers? People’s personal budgets will be a challenge at least for the coming months so venues will have to really up the experiences they have on offer in order to entice audiences and compete.

Baby Jane Duo

“WHEN THE PANDEMIC IS OVER, LIVE EVENTS AND ENTERTAINMENT WILL BE AS IMPORTANT AS EVER.”

Can you reveal any big gigs on the horizon locally? We should start to see some great announcements in the coming weeks and more activity within our industry from October onwards as the traditional event season starts to pick up. Your biggest professional lesson from the past six months? Have patience and humility. In life there are some things you really cannot control and this has certainly been one of them. What you can control is how you act. What’s On_55

TUNE IN! Nightclubs might still be closed but there’s no shortage of great music being produced locally. Here are four great tracks to wrap your ears around 02 SWERTE Esso (The Recipe) Middle East hip-hop fans will know Swerte is in his element exploring different sounds and genres. Having worked across drum ‘n’ bass, funk and even metal, here he teams up with Arab drill artist Freek and Indonesian rap artists Saykoji. The result is a multilingual, call-to-arms, fiery drill/ hip-hop anthem that tackles some of 2020’s biggest issues. Check it out at Swerte’s Spotify page.

01 AELI X SEKI SUPERVILLAIN Cry Me A Valley (Various platforms) Former Dubai resident, producer and DJ, Aeli might have upped sticks to LA but he’s embarked on a series of tracks featuring his favourite artists from the Middle East. While Aeli is famed for seamlessly lacing hip-hop and electronic music with traces of traditional North African sounds, he ventures into Afrobeat territory here, with Dubai-based rapper Seki crafting a message about toxic relationships, manipulation and crocodile tears over low-swinging sensual beats and an infectious hook. Find it on YouTube, Soundcloud, Anghami, Apple Music and Aeli’s social channels.

03 HOLLAPHONIC Wicked & Lazy (Spinnin’ Deep) Veteran clubbers will recognise this brilliant Hollaphonic track as a cover of the X-Press 2 anthem with David Byrne from nearly 20 years ago. The Dubai duo have tastefully updated the classic for a new generation, adding their modern production tricks, including a booming kick drum that heads straight for the sternum, Mariana-trench deep basslines and clever percussion lines that draw you in.

04 MARK SHAKEDOWN I Need You (Universal Music MENA) As a DJ, Mark Shakedown has played across Dubai and Beirut after breaking onto the scene with gigs alongside Steve Angelo. As a producer, he’s remixed for R3HAB and Wyclef Jean and notched up millions of streams globally. So when he releases a new track, you pay attention. I Need You is a summery slice of dance music magic, all shimmering vocals, sun-dappled electronics and tropical beats. Give it a listen on Mark’s Spotify page.

A GOOD CAUSE

e drink coffee with our cats and take our dogs to the beach, but we don’t always give back to animals in need. Thankfully, Royal Canin UAE has stepped up to the mark. The leading pet food brand has launched Animals In Distress (AID) to help stray cats and dogs of the UAE. “There is a huge need to help sick or injured animals, and this initiative is another way we can heal (and hopefully home) the frail or injured cats and dogs in our neighborhoods,” says JeanCharles Hameau, managing partner, Saint Vincent Group and Distributor Royal Canin UAE. And, as animals lovers, we at What’s On are delighted to share these stories with you. Over the next few months we will be dedicating pages in our magazine – and online – to the success stories made possible not only by Royal Canin UAE, but also the amazing volunteers, clinics, and countrywide shelters that go above and beyond to help animals in need. Cases will be selected by veterinary clinics in the UAE who will file a case with Royal Canin UAE, including any notes and diagnostic

Animals in Distress THE SUCCESS STORIES

Animals in Distress is a new What’s On column profiling the amazing animal shelters, veterinary clinics, carers and the passionate team at Royal Canin UAE that work together to save the lives of stray animals the in the UAE. Every month, Royal Canin UAE has pledged to cover the costs of vet bills for select animals in need. These are their stories… MEET

fantastic signs,” explained Dr Kathleen when we paid a visit to Mercy earlier this week. “Despite going through so much, we are delighted with his progress,” she added.

MERCY A tough start on the streets

Mercy was found on the streets with a serious wound over his back and hips. He was immediately taken to Pets Health Veterinary Clinic by Adopt-A-Friend to be assessed by Dr Kathleen Leguin. The large wound on his back had taken its toll and he was left weak, dehydrated and struggling to fend for himself in the middle of a harsh Dubai summer, and during those initial examinations, his future looked uncertain. Initial treatments Mercy was stabilised and given emergency treatment with intravenous fluids, temperature regulation and pain management. He was sedated to take radiographs to see images of his tissues, organs, bones, and vessels. Luckily, this revealed no fractures or damage to the spine or hind legs which meant Mercy could have his large wound cleaned and dressed with possibilities to have a skip flap surgery done in the future. Mercy was also found with multiple strains of bacteria and was given appropriate antibiotic therapy to help treat it. At the moment, he is also receiving daily dressing changes

Forever home What’s On will continue to visit Mercy and track his progress. He will need to stay in the hospital for another four weeks to complete his treatment. As always, Royal Canin UAE will continue to pay for Mercy’s treatment until he is ready to go to his forever home which will be handled by the team at Adopt-A-Friend. If you wish to adopt Mercy, send an email to adopt.a.friend.uae@ gmail.com

to keep the area clean, hydrated and to optimize conditions to encourage healing. And this is all thanks to the assistance of Royal Canin UAE who are covering his medical bills. Thankfully, Mercy tested negative for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus – a virus that is common within the street cat colonies.

Fighting spirit After three weeks of intensive care at Pets Health Veterinary Clinic, Mercy’s condition has improved dramatically, much to the delight of Dr Kathleen and her team. “The size of his wound has already shrunk, he’s responding extremely well to all the treatment, and he’s put on weight. Great Lakes

Here’s our bucket list guide to eight fabulous lakes around the world

68_What’sOn

01

01

LAKE COMO Lombardy, Italy This is a lake of glacial origin with celebrity status. It has an area of 146 square kilometres, making it the third-largest lake in Italy, after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore. But it has always come first for Europe’s aristocracy, who have been flocking to its rocky-lined shore for centuries. From Roman times until today, the jet set have enjoyed its peaceful views plus the excellent restaurants. It’s most well-known current resident is George Clooney, who owns a villa overlooking the water, but Madonna, Gianni Versace, Ronaldinho, Sylvester Stallone and Richard Branson are other famous faces who have enjoyed the Italian beauty spot.

02

03

LAKE LUCERNE

02

PLITVICE LAKES Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia From green, to blue, to grey, to purple – the waters of this Croatian lake mutate in colour constantly due to minerals and sunlight. Waterfalls connect the 16 lakes, and the surrounding woodland, which are home to deer, bears, wolves and birds, making it look otherworldly.

03

Lucerne, Switzerland This mirror-like lake in a posh part of Switzerland twists between the pretty city of Lucerne and into the mountains. With a total area of 113 square kilometres, much of the shoreline sits by the mountains that rise up to 1,500 metres above the lake. This perspective gives visitors incredible views of Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus, which look even better when reflected in the still waterway below. Steamers and passenger boats shuttle between towns on the lake while energetic hikers can tackle the 35-kilometre Swiss Path around Lake Lucerne and enjoy that fresh air for which Switzerland is so famous. TRAVEL // GREAT LAKES 04

LAGUNA COLORADA Bolivia High up in the Bolivian mountains, about a three hours’ drive north of Chile’s San Pedro de Atacama, is where you’ll find the crimsoncoloured Laguna Colorada, whose water gets its distinctive hue from red algae (although folklore attributes it to the spilled blood of the gods). Try to visit between September and April, when the shallow but beautiful lake is full of water and light pink flamingos are gathered for breeding season.

05

DEAD SEA Jordan Don’t let the name fool you, the Dead Sea, is in fact, a saline lake with palm treelined mountains and white, serpentine salt formations. The amount of salt in the water makes swimming difficult (not to mention, inadvisable), but floating is a breeze.

06

LAKE MICHIGAN Michigan, USA The sugar sand beaches of Michigan are summer playgrounds for the landlocked locals in Michigan. People travel for hours to enjoy more than 3,200 miles of prime lake shoreline. Nearby is Ann Arbor, the quaint university town with a Midwest vibe. Ann Arbor has art museums, independent coffee shops, and hipster galleries. You can canoe on the lake in the morning, attend a fascinating lecture in the afternoon, then dine in a five-star hotspot in the evening. 70_What’s On

06

07

FIVE-FLOWER LAKE

07

Jiuzhai Valley National Park, China The pristine waters of Wuhua Hai, or Five-Flower Lake as it’s known in English, is the pride of China. Its waters are a captivating rainbow of turquoise and emerald (and plenty more colours in between) which shift

beautifully as the light changes during the day. Scattered on the lake’s bed are fallen ancient tree trunks. One of China’s 108 haizi, or multi-coloured lakes, locals believe that FiveFlower Lake was created after a goddess dropped a mirror given to her by a lover.

08

LAKE MINNEWANKA Banff, Canada Banff National Park has no shortage of beautiful lakes (Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are standouts), but we love the glacial Lake Minnewanka, in the eastern part of the park, for its epic views of the Canadian Rockies. What’sOn_71

L A S TMINUTE TRIP Experience the snow-capped mountains of the Alps at Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates Missed your ski trip this year, or perhaps you’ve always hankered for a stay in a lavish cabin in the Alps? Give it a try, Dubai style, inside an Aspen Chalet at the Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates.

The room Opening the door is like being transported to a cosy ski chalet in the heart of the Swiss Alps. Authenticity is evident in every detail, right from the wooden hues and dimmed lighting to the stag fixtures adorning the walls. There’s a (faux) fire crackling in the fireplace, while the view out of your windows pans onto a merry scene of skiers and snowboarders whizzing down Ski Dubai. Not just any hotel room, the Aspen Chalet comes with its own private butler to cater to your every need. We were treated to an array of Arabic sweets and fresh fruit, which is served in the dining and kitchen area of the chalet.

Dinner There are a few options for dinner within the hotel, and, of course, in the wider Mall of The Emirates. We opted for oldie but goodie, Salero. It’s a typically Spanish affair, with hot and cold tapas to start. The sautéed prawns with chilli and garlic, and the enormous paella are standouts.

Breakfast Breakfast takes place in the Aspen Cafe on the ground floor of the hotel. We started with bread, hot-from-the-oven croissants, and an assortment of fresh fruit. Following that, you’ll choose a dish from the hot breakfast menu – we recommend the eggs Benedict. 74_What’s On

“OPENING THE DOOR IS LIKE BEING TRANSPORTED TO A COSY SKI CHALET IN THE HEART OF THE SWISS ALPS” Pool Then it’s out to the Mosaic Chill Bar Pool, a real hidden gem. A calm oasis in the heart of the bustling city, we spent the day keeping cool in the temperaturecontrolled water.

Afternoon Tea Finally, it’s back to the Aspen Cafe for Afternoon Tea. It’s presented beautifully,

in what we can only describe as a little treasure box of drawers. Upon opening each one, you’ll find a delightful assortment of bitesize sandwiches, cakes and scones. Suitably full, it’s time to check out, and head back to hot and dry lands.... a Aspen Chalets, Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates, from Dhs2,000 per night. kempinski.com

IS FOR AYURVEDIC MASSAGE

Fun fact: the word for oil in Sanskrit is also a word for love

Ayurveda is the 5,000-year-old Indian ‘science of life’. Ayurvedic massage applies this ancient wisdom along with litres of warm oil to soothe our stress-wrought bodies and blissfully unwind. There are a few places where you can pick up a good ayurvedic session, but one of the best is at Cinq Monde Spa, Emerald Palace Kempinski Dubai. A 50-minute session comes in at Dhs550. kempinski.com

IS FOR FIVE RHYTHMS DANCING

Your opportunity to dance like no one’s watching

Did you know that you can learn to dance away negative life experiences? That’s what happens at a 5Rhythms workshop. The classes, described as mindful movement meditation practice, have a devout following in Dubai from all walks of life – from students to CEOs. The basis of the theory behind 5Rhythms is that negative life experiences and emotional trauma become stored in our bodies over time. By moving our bodies, we can shake up firmly rooted systems of thought. In each class, participants practice moving to each of the rhythms: flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness. Over time and with regular practice, people begin to discover the things they have been carrying around in their bodies, and learn to heal. Classes take place at various venues across Dubai, including StudioRepublik on Saturdays from 11am. 5rhythms.com

IS FOR YARN

Here’s a fun fact: Knitting relaxes. The repetitious movement of the needle and yarn has a calming effect. As a result, less of the stress hormone cortisol is released, which in turn causes the blood pressure to lower and the pulse to slow down. Your thoughts can wander because the motion of your hands is controlled solely by muscle memory. You can switch off mentally, and forget about the stresses of everyday life. Head to craft emporium Creative Minds (creativemindsdubai. com) , pick up a starter kit, You Tube a knitting for beginners video and away you go.
