EDITOR’S LETTER

I WAS 17 YEARS OLD WHEN I WENT TO MY FIRST FESTIVAL.

EAT

Luigia If you haven’t eaten at Luigia restaurant in Rixos Premium, take my advice and check it out now. There’s a host of new menu options including the Montarina Napoletana, a fried pizza dough with buffalo mozzarella dish that’s out of this world. @luigia.ae

LISTEN It was Reading Festival in the UK, and it rained. A number of factors influenced my decision to go, the biggest of which was probably my best friend’s ‘gentle persuasion’ (for which read standing over my shoulder at my home computer and demanding I buy us tickets). It was a cool festival though – I caught Blink 182’s Travis Barker’s drumstick – and it set me on the path of becoming a music festival fan. But my love for festivals isn’t just down to the line-up. In fact, Alice (our Digital Editor) will testify that my knowledge of current chart hits is embarrassing. No, I love festivals because of all the other bits that come with it – the amazing food, the beer gardens, and that warm fuzzy festival feeling of fun. Because who doesn’t love having fun? You’re in luck, then, because What’s On’s very own festival Party in the Park, returns to Media City Amphitheatre this month for two days of festival fun, and a great line-up, too, as it happens. Read all about it on p18. Early-bird tickets sold out like hot cakes, so snap up yours while you still can, or your best friend will be fuming… Enjoy the issue,

SUPPORTING ACTS

FATBOY SLIM

B

efore Diplo, before Calvin Harris, before David Guetta, there was Fatboy Slim. Real name Norman Cook, Brighton’s very own superstar DJ is 56 now, and no less able to get a crowd moving than when Praise You topped the charts 20 years

Hollaphonic Fatboy Slim

Dubai-based producers Greg Stainer and Olly Wood were the first dance music duo from the Middle East to be signed to a major record label.

ago. Even for those PITPgoers whose clubbing days are receding into the metaphorical rear-view mirror at this point, Cook dropping throwback bangers like Right Here, Right Now will get them straight back on the dance floor. The hitmaker’s credentials date right back to the mid-1980s, when he was a member of the indie pop group the Housemartins. When the band split in 1988, Cook decided to pursue the music he was passionate about: dance. His fingerprints are on numerous standout songs of that era, including the 1990 number one smash, Dub Be Good To Me, and 1994’s Turn On, Tune In, And Cop Out, which was picked up by Levi for a multimillion dollar advertising campaign that made the track impossible to ignore. His first album release as Fatboy Slim, Better Living Through Chemistry, came in 1996, and was warmly received by critics, but it was the 1998 follow-up, You’ve Come A Long Way Baby, that made Cook internationally famous and his tracks ubiquitous. From Right Here, Right Now, to Praise You, to Rockafella Skank to Gangster Trippin’ , it’s hard to know which of his solid gold hits Cook will choose to close out his set. While his follow-ups haven’t matched up to the success of that album (although special mention should go to the single Weapon of Choice, the music video for which infamously featured Christopher Walken and his iconic dance moves), Fatboy Slim still knows his way around a hit single. A 2013 return to making music saw him top the dance charts again, with Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat. Consider that your instruction manual for the Party in the Park weekend. 10.2019_What’s On_19

PA R T Y I N T H E PA R K FRIDAY,

NOVEMBER 1

RICHARD ASHCROFT

A

music legend will grace the Media City Amphitheatre for a second time on November 1. The Verve’s former frontman, fresh from picking up the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music earlier this year, will play his sophomore Party in the Park set (this time with a full band in tow) on night two of the festival. An icon of the Nineties Britpop scene, Coldplay’s Chris Martin has called Ashcroft the “best singer in the world” and Noel Gallagher wrote the Oasis track Cast No Shadow about him. In fact, his contribution to music is one of the few things the feuding Gallagher brothers seem to agree on. When Ashcroft released a comeback solo album, These People, in 2016, Gallagher – better known for complimenting himself than other artists – publicly welcomed him back on Twitter, and Ashcroft has supported him on tour.

20_What’s On_10.2019

The Wigan-born singersongwriter, who initially dreamed of being a professional footballer, rose to fame as the lead singer of The Verve from 1990 until their split in 1999 (they reformed briefly in 2007). The band’s track Bittersweet Symphony – and the video that featured Ashcroft striding purposefully down a London street – was a defining moment of the Britpop era, and saw Ashcroft dubbed the “unmistakeable face of the number one rock band in England”. He’s also achieved significant success as a solo artist, and his sixth solo album reached number four on the UK album charts. After the high-energy of Fatboy Slim’s set on October 31, Ashcroft will slow things down, with classics like Lucky Man, The Drugs Don’t Work and Song For The Lovers guaranteed to have indie lovers in heaven.

LIGHTHOUSE FAMILY

T

he latest addition to the line-up, another Nineties-tastic act, Lighthouse Family. The smooth sounds of Lifted, surely one of the most-played tracks of that decade, will be floating out over Media City Amphitheatre come Party in the Park. British duo Tunde Baiyewu and Paul Tucker, on lead vocals and keyboard respectively, met in Newcastle as students, and went on to rule the charts with their exceptionally catchy easylistening tracks. They released the album Ocean Drive in 1995, which sold nearly two million copies and made it virtually impossible to turn a radio on at the time without hearing Tunde’s liquid vocals spilling out. More than 20 years on, the duo are making a comeback (their second). They released an album, Blue Sky In Your Head in July, and fans can expect to hear tracks from Lighthouse Family’s latest effort at Party In The Park. But no doubt Tunde’s and Tucker will be focusing on the crowd pleasers

THE KOOKS

T

he sounds of Naïve are a oneway ticket back to the summer of 2006, and it still sounds as good 13 years after Daniel Craig made his 007 debut in Casino Royale and the (ex) couple formerly known as Brangelina welcomed baby Shiloh Jolie Pitt. It’s taken from the Brighton band’s debut album Inside In/Inside Out, which was released that same year and went on to be certified quadruple platinum in the UK. It threw the Kooks into the mix of the vibrant indie scene that dominated the charts at the time (their album was released on the same day as the Arctic Monkeys’ monster hit Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not), and frontman Luke Pritchard’s relationship with Katie Melua – then the biggest selling female artist in Europe – made them a poster couple for peak Noughties pop culture. Since those halcyon days, the pair have gone their separate ways, original bass player Max Rafferty left the band, and former drummer Paul Garred took his leave in 2010 due to a nerve problem in his arm (he’s been replaced by Alexis Nunez). But The Kooks endure. The band released a new album, Let’s Go Sunshine, last year, but they’ve also benefited from the rise of streaming, as their back catalogue has brought them to the attention of a whole new generation of fans. So yes, expect new tracks when the band play at Party In The Park, but we predict the emphasis will be on the old favourites.

from their back catalogue on the night. We’re predicting a mass sing-along to High: the lyrics (“we are gonna be, forever, you and me, you will always keep it flying high in the sky, of love”) are simply made for a festival-wide group hug.

ONE YEAR TO GO

COUNTDOWN With one year to go until Expo 2020 hits the Dubai desert, What’s On looks ahead to the biggest event the UAE has ever seen…

UAE Pavilion

28_What’s On_10.2019

EXPO 2020

t seems like only yesterday that Dubai celebrated the news it had been selected as the host city of Expo 2020. But an astonishing six years down the line (no, really – that was 2013), the final countdown is on to the arrival of the biggest event ever to land on our shores. With a staggering 15 million visitors from more than 190 countries expected to descend upon event HQ over the course of 173 days, starting 12 months from now, preparations are now in their final stages. But when Expo opens its doors to the public on October 20, 2020, just what can visitors and residents expect? What’s On goes behind the construction to count down its top five reasons to get very excited indeed…

Education, education, education

Mobility Pavilion

Virtual reality F&B

Encouraging a love of learning is at the heart of Expo’s planning, with academics, inventors and tech pioneers descending upon Dubai with a host of world-changing ideas to unpick. Discover how tech and gaming are merging to create new forms of exercise, find out how Czech scientists have learned to make water from air and sunlight, or beat the UAE to the red planet by going on a journey to Mars at the Mobility Pavilion. Curious kids will find plenty on offer too, with everything from make-yourown robot workshops to lessons on 3D printing and its uses in medicine.

Exploring the arts, questioning culture Whether you’re an aficionado of expressionism or an imbecile when it comes to the impressionist movement, Expo’s artistic offerings promise to have you looking afresh at creativity and culture. From traditional art to performances ranging from poetry to acrobatics, digital theatre to dance, there’s a form of expression for every interest. And while the full entertainment programme remains under wraps for now, we’ve also been told to expect appearances from global stars of comedy, music and literature. Watch this space…

Oman Pavilion

EXPO 2020

Looking towards a responsible future

An eye for architecture Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll be aware that preparations for Expo have involved a LOT of construction – but don’t expect to see anything that could be classed as mere ordinary architecture here. Every participating country will be creating its own Pavilion space, designed to introduce its unique culture and heritage, while many nations will also seek to demonstrate the cutting-edge ideas currently shaping our constructed world. Watch out for the UAE Pavilion, which will feature ground-breaking moving ‘wings’ to harness energy. Elsewhere, visitors will be able to look upon the world’s biggest 360-degree projection surface on Al Wasl Plaza’s steel dome, explore the all-natural Opportunity Pavilion, made from materials including 111km of rope, or wander in a host of open-air parks where huge amphitheatre spaces will sit beneath shaded canopies of Arabian ghaf trees, jasmine and palms. Don’t miss out on the chance to climb to the top of the rotating observation tower, where a specially created camera will help you create some spectacular Instagram moments. 30_What’s On_10.2019

Sustainability Pavilion

While the theme of Expo 2020 is ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, country pavilions will be ordered according to their choice of three subthemes – opportunity, mobility and sustainability. From Azerbaijan Pavilion’s leaf-shaped roof, designed to encourage visitors to explore their impact on our environmental future, to the swinging seats in the Germany Pavilion, aimed at questioning how we solve global challenges, everything from the entertainment to the architecture has been designed to contemplate the future of mankind. We can’t wait to see the Sustainability Pavilion, where the madness of human consumption is explored via a giant, sharp-toothed machine named Gnasher.

Al Wasl Plaza

Food, glorious food Nothing brings different cultures together more easily than the breaking of bread and, with more than 200 outlets preparing to serve 300,000 meals a day from across 50 global cuisines, Expo 2020 promises to be a true feast for foodies, dishing up everything from sit-down restaurants to street food stalls. It’s not all about mere taste though. Sustainability and wellness are at the heart of the food offering, with all participating outlets being asked to sign up to the event’s ethical Food Ethos. Meanwhile, from a food hall promoting local start-ups to seminars on the future of farming covering everything from robotics to augmented reality, it seems visitors can expect the contents of their plate to stimulate their mind as well as their taste buds… October 20, 2020 to April 10, 2021 a Expo 2020 Dubai, Expo Road, Dubai South, Jebel Ali, Dubai, from Dhs120. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

THE

PHANTOM

OF THE OPERA t’s a bold claim, without doubt. But if any show could realistically claim to be the world’s most popular musical, it’s Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. An undisputed heavyweight of the genre, since making its debut back in 1986, Phantom, as it is more colloquially known to its cast, has broken record upon record. Broadway’s longest running show, with more than 13,200 performances since its opening night 31 years ago, Phantom has notched up audiences in excess of 145 million people in 166 cities across 35 countries to date, bringing in an astonishing Dhs22billion in the process. Based on the novel by French journalist and mystery writer Gaston Leroux, the show tells the tale of a

disfigured musical genius who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House, before becoming enraptured by the talents of a young soprano, Christine. Having lured her in as his protégé, the phantom falls madly in love, then descends into jealous madness upon learning of Christine’s love affair with the opera’s patron, Raoul.

What follows is certainly not an exercise in understatement – with huge operatic numbers, a full corps de ballet, a dramatic unmasking of the disfigured ghost of the opera house and even a famous crashing chandelier, Phantom is as overblown and dramatic as its name might suggest. But with previous cast members including theatre stalwarts Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, and a star-studded movie adaptation having drawn talent including Emmy Rossum, Gerard Butler, Simon Callow and Minnie Driver, Phantom’s biography so far packs some serious star power. Now making its debut at Dubai Opera House, the

latest production is one of the biggest shows currently on the world tour circuit, and arrives in the UAE on the back of rave reviews in venues running from Manila and Singapore to the UK. Prepare for drama – and don’t forget to duck when that chandelier makes its entrance…

rom humble beginnings to mega-stardom Marshall Mathers III has produced some of the most iconic rap of his generation including Lose Yourself, Not Afraid, The Real Slim Shady and Without Me, won more awards than most artists could dream of, and developed some serious talent in the form of 50 cent and D12. His outrageously darkhumoured lyrics have carved a distinct niche for him in hip hop and ultimately crossed over to a mainstream pop market – albeit with a record-setting number of censors’ bleeps. Expect a set list that will throw back to the 1990s and 2000s, featuring some of Mathers’ most iconic tracks, and recent hits from his latest album Kamikaze, the bestselling Hip-Hop album of 2018, including The Greatest, Lucky You and Nice Guy.

Family-friendly fare at the Westin t’s Thursday night; a brief and merciful respite from the quotidian routine of work, gym and errands lies in wait. If you work in the Media City/ Marina area and find Mr Miyagi’s or Zero Gravity a bit too This Is England, a more understated offering has come to town in the form of Mina’s Kitchen Maritime Fresh,

I

billed as ‘the perfect end to the work week for all the seafood lovers out there’. You’ll find it in The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, somewhat a bastion of seafood thanks to its upmarket Spanish tapas bar El Sur. Just off the lobby, Mina’s Kitchen replaces Blue Orange as the Westin’s main restaurant, a change that has been accompanied by a great décor revamp. High ceilings and a large square footage have been lent an easy intimacy and contemporary edge with black and white tiling, vertical gardens and Aztec-esque friezes. We choose not to head outside to the alfresco bar and shisha corner, but come winter expect it to be a popular spot. As nice as bronze cutlery and hip leafpatterned chairs are, one doesn’t brunch for the interiors. Mina’s Kitchen has everything you’d expect from the classic brunch: starters and salads, Arabic and Indian

sections, a meat grill and a kid’s section are all dotted around the space – but the highlight is the seafood. Prawns, sashimi, salmon, sushi, a tower of oysters – guests are guaranteed fresh ingredients, cooked on request and delivered to the table. On recommendation from the chefs, we opt for a half dozen oysters and a pair of smaller, greyer lobsters: whose meat is far tenderer than its larger counterparts. Accompanied by a glass of something sparkling, it’s a decent way to end a week – and there’s always Barasti next door if you don’t need those extra brain cells. a The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, Thur 7pm to 11pm, Dhs249 with soft drinks, Dhs349 with house drinks. THE PASS AT SKAFOS

Homegrown hero John Buenaventura hosts new monthly chef’s table at Zabeel House Al Seef. Here’s why you need to book it now… ou’ll feel a little bit like you’re in Goodfellas when you show up for your chef ’s table dinner reservation at Skafos restaurant and you (and up to four of your friends) are immediately whisked through the dining room where you’ll be seated at the stainless-steel booth that’s literally the kitchen’s service counter (AKA The Pass). The dinner – which occurs just once a month – has an ever-changing menu, but on our visit, it included terrific fare like a seared yellowtail tataki with thin radish discs, coconut oil and a sprinkle of pink pepper; the exquisite burnt leeks with browned butter, hazelnuts and truffle paste; and an inventive black onyx fillet with popcorn form. Each of the five courses is served by chef John Buenaventura (of Cuisinero Uno fame), the new executive chef of Al Seef Hotels. The dinner lasts about three hours and is broken up with lively conversation from the enigmatic chef John and wine-pairing tête-à-tête with a charming sommelier, and even includes a participatory dessert course where you’ll make your way to a different kitchen space

MEET THE CHEFS

KATE CHRISTOU & JESSE BLAKE The culinary team behind LOWE We met when we both worked as chefs at Cumulus Inc in Melbourne. Then Mohammad Zaal, CEO and Founder of the new KOA Canvas development got in touch with us as he liked our approach to F&B and wanted to bring a fresh, unique, homegrown communityfocused concept to Dubai. It was a no brainer for us! We are a small, neighbourhood restaurant offering creative honest food, in a cosy atmosphere and all at a reasonable price. When we are designing dishes at LOWE we are inspired by our memories. Whether it be recreating a favourite childhood flavour, or a taste we experienced travelling, it’s a very nostalgic process. Reducing our environmental impact is extremely important to us. We host regular Waste NOT dinners where we repurpose would-be food scraps, and we are building our own organic kitchen garden. People can’t get enough of our house fries. We use the best quality potatoes and cut them by hand and people love them! It’s surprising because we have so many more exciting dishes on the menu. Asking us to pick our favourite dish at LOWE is like trying to pick your favourite child. It’s impossible! a KOA Canvas, Wadi Al Safa 3, daily, from 8am. Tel: (04) 3201890. lowe-dubai.com

Showtime! Brunch Dishes created by the hit TV series’ finalists are served at MasterChef’s new Friday feast When MasterChef, The TV Experience restaurant opened in Dubai we were, admittedly, a little confused with the concept. Do we need to compete to eat? Or is it a normal sit-down restaurant? In a nutshell, the MasterChef ’s menu comprises winning dishes from chefs across all of the cult culinary series’ around the world, so a brunch of winning dishes should prove a hit, right? We arrived to a buzzing atmosphere and an industrial-chic vibe that’s on trend in Dubai right now, with contrasting wood, brick and metals and the sort of casual close seating where you’ll likely strike up a conversation – and make friends with – your neighbours. We like the table-service brunch concept, which includes unlimited sharing starters, a choice of main and some surprise desserts, all served to your table by friendly staff. The starters were made up of five plates including fried prawn bhaajis and avo (a winning dish by Jane Devonshire, MasterChef UK champion 2016), lemongrass and ginger meatball skewers (from Ping Coombes, MasterChef UK champion 2014) and pulled beef chilaquiles (from Elena Duggan, MasterChef Australia champion 2016). It was an unusual mix

of dishes, but the winning plate for us was MasterChef US champion 2016 Shaun O’Neale’s baked brie, a dreamy, creamy spectacle with bourbon pecan and maple drizzle, served with crunchy mini-toast and cranberries. Meanwhile, our favourite mains were the fried chicken eggs Benedict (another win from Jane Devonshire), an oddly satisfying combination with delicious fried buttermilk chicken drizzled in hollandaise, and topped with tomato and coriander. We also loved the mighty and meaty burger – created by the in-house MasterChef, the TV Experience Dubai team, with chef ’s special BBQ, wasabi and sriracha mayonnaise all combining to pack a powerful punch. By the time desserts came, we only had enough room for a spoonful of each, and while they were all delicious, the key lime pie from MasterChef UK champ Shelina Permalloo was our favourite. It’s an interesting concept with a handful of well executed dishes, and ultimately great fun for fans of the show. a Showtime! HUQQA

Is the new breakfast menu at this Turkish mainstay worth an early start at Dubai Mall? et’s be honest, dining in a shopping mall has not historically been much of an ‘event’. For most of us, food is typically just shopping fuel: to be purchased from a greasy chain and chowed down quickly, surrounded by greasy napkins and post-retail regret. Huqqa is a Turkish eatery that looked to turn this preconception on its head when it opened early last year. Tucked away on the top floor of Fashion Avenue, the space is a bit difficult to find (note to drivers: do not park anywhere except for Fashion Parking unless you fancy a twenty-minute walk), but worth it once you’re inside. The space is split-level and has amazing views of the fountains, outdoor seating, and a comforting amount of Turkish customers. Long a mainstay in Istanbul (the home of its first branch), the restaurant has recently brought out new breakfast items, as well as lowering its prices.

L

56_What’s On_10.2019

The main event on the menu is a Full Turkish, if you will – the massive breakfast spread for two (Dhs184). With a basket of Turkish breads and pastries, two plates of eggs any style, pan-fried sujuk (Turkish sausage), a cheese platter, honeycomb and fresh Turkish cream, it’s enough to feed a small army – but the traditional additions of olives and cucumbers, plus a fresh fruit platter, adds an element of virtuousness to the feast.

A couple of new international dishes on the menu are perhaps a healthier option for someone about to try on a lot of clothes – but the acai bowls (Dhs68) and chia pudding (Dhs64) are a little overpriced compared to the more traditional items. The steak (Dhs49) and avocado Benedicts (Dhs44) are both excellent if you can’t have breakfast without the addition of hollandaise, but it does makes sense here to embrace the Turkish cuisine.

Cue the cig börek (Dhs33), a mammoth pastry lined with cheese and mince, the pastirma (a kind of cured beef ) scramble on toast (Dhs38), or eggs with sujuk (Dhs31), Turkey’s answer to eggs and bacon. Kahvaltı is breakfast in Turkish – its literal meaning is ‘before coffee’ – so it stands to reason that we finish with a brew. And make no mistake; this is no Americano in a paper cup. Two waiters bring out a silver tray topped with a cezve – a long-handled copper pot – filled with the steaming, flavourful coffee that the country is known for. When you’re done, perhaps try the Turkish practice of coffee reading – cover your cup with a saucer, turn it over and then have a look at the shape the grounds leave on the side of the cup. If you see the shape of shopping bags? It must be a sign that the delights of Fashion Avenue just outside are a part of your destiny... a Huqqa / The Market, The Dubai Mall (Fashion Ave Level 3), breakfast is served Sun to Thur 10am to 1pm, Fri and Sat 10am to 3pm. BAR MONTH O F

El Chapo’s Tacos A fun-loving Mexican bar that doesn’t take itself too seriously… and you shouldn’t either Dubai is full of great bars – plenty of which qualify as a ‘good times’ bar. You know a good times bar the second you step inside – whether it’s the tunes, the vibes or the crowd, when you find a fun bar, you know you’re going to have a great evening. El Chapo’s Tacos is a case in point. Even before its saloon-style doors opened to the public, we admired its colourful campaigns accompanied by playful puns and Mexican innuendos. Part of the 4-Front family (who brought us Mr Miyagi’s), El Chapo’s Tacos sits

poolside next to its pan-Asian cousin in the increasingly popular Studio One Hotel. We visited the bar midweek and were pleasantly surprised to see it almost full. A member of staff, donned in a bright orange jumpsuit, lead us behind a steel bar prison gate to our table. The walls are lined with shelves of unique Mexican memorabilia. The menu is every bit as brash as the venue, with homemade tequilas at the top of the list, offering flavours from blueberry to jalapeño. Before the drinks even arrive we already started dipping tortilla chips

into our guacamole, which was prepared fresh at our table. The atmosphere is buzzing with the Studio/Motor City afterwork crowd keen to make the most of the newlylaunched ladies’ night offer. For food, stick to the quesadillas and tacos. The taco gobernador (Dhs59) was a standout favourite with garlic prawns, gooey cheese and crunchy sautéed onions. We also enjoyed the gringa quesadilla (Dhs45), which was given a sweet kick thanks to a roast pineapple relish. For those that live and work nearby, El Chapo’s is a very welcome addition to Studio City’s up-and-coming nightlife scene, perfect for grabbing a margarita and tacos with friends after work. a Studio One Hotel, daily noon to 2am. What to eat: Modern Indian cuisine Four dishes you need to try

ndian menus can be intimidating. Without a tonne of familiarity, it’s easy to settle for perennial favourites like chicken korma and samosas. But playing it safe with Indian food is a huge mistake; it’s a country with 29 different states, each with its own signature dishes and cuisine. We’ve enlisted the help of celebrated chef Vikas Khanna to give us the lowdown of must-try Indian dishes, all available at his new restaurant, Kinara by Vikas Khanna at JA Lake View Hotel...

01. Tandoori salmon ‘The subtle flavours of wild salmon seasoned with roasted smoky layers of tandoori spices is very comforting. Each bite can be combined with mintcilantro chutney and radish salad. But, a touch of spicy passion fruit coulis brings it all together.’ Price: Dhs60 58_What’s On_10.2019

‘It takes a lot of effort to combine the flavours of lightly roasted hung yogurt and the crispy texture of kunafa crust. It is a real treat for the palate when these textures merge. Combining the filling with ginger and dates creates a great contrast of flavours.’ Price: Dhs50

03. Shakarkandi ki Chaat ‘This dish was inspired by my memories of winter in Old Delhi. Sweet potatoes are boiled in ginger broth, smoked with mango wood and sandalwood. It is pan-seared and seasoned with pickling spices then served with roasted strawberry and dried mango powder sauce, yogurt and a sweet-sour accompaniment of kumquats.’ Price: Dhs48

What does conscious living mean? With the rise of busy lifestyles and social media addiction, we are often living in a state of thoughtless existence. Conscious living is the exact opposite of this – it’s about making mindful decisions that are thought out with purpose. How can people live more sustainably? Ditch your plastic toothbrush for a brush with a biodegradable bamboo handle; carry a reusable bottle for water; be conscious of where your food is coming from and buy local where possible. If everyone made one sustainable lifestyle decision, together we can make a huge difference. And that’s why you started The Goodness Company? Yes. With The Goodness Company, we want to bridge this gap.

NEWRELEASES RELEASES NEW

★★★★★ DIRECTOR: Todd Phillips CAST: Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro

Joker Joaquin Phoenix takes on one of the most iconic villians in cinema history The bane of Batman’s existence since 1940, each new film depicting The Joker has twisted him into something even more creepy. But because Joaquin Phoenix’s take on Gotham City’s clown prince of crime – the drug-addled and tormented performer Arthur Fleck – sits outside the DC Comics Extended Universe, this psychological thriller has carte blanche to send The Joker’s origin story down a cackling path of no return. Effortlessly flitting between light and darkness, Joaquin’s ability to fray your moral compass is a testament to his brilliance. 74_What’s On_10.2019

Do you think Arthur Fleck’s transition into becoming The Joker is inevitable or a choice? For me, the great joy of the film for an audience is that they get to decide for themselves. That’s what I was initially attracted to – in most genre movies, you play a villain or a hero. And what I liked about this, is that I was never certain what was motivating him. Was it hard to lose 24kg to play the role? As it turns out, it affects your psychology, and you really start to go mad when you lose that much weight in that amount of time. Where did you come up with the Joker’s laugh? [Director Todd Phillips] showed me some videos and he described the laughter as something that’s almost painful. And so ultimately, I think that it’s a part of Joker that’s trying to emerge.

Sarah Connor comes to their aid, as well as the original Terminator, 76_What’s On_10.2019

for a fight for the future. Old-fashioned fun but it’s probably time to end the franchise now…

THE KING

★★★★★

DIRECTOR: David Macho CAST: Lily-Rose Depp, Timothée Chalamet Timothée Chalamet proves he’s no one-hit-wonder with this immersive performance as King Henry V. Based on Shakespeare’s trilogy of plays on the reluctant ruler, Chalamet carries the story from just before the death of his father (Ben Mendelsohn) to the aftermath of the Battle of Agincourt. The intensity between him and Catherine de Valois (Lily-Rose Depp) is palpable – it’s no wonder they’ve become a real couple off-screen.

★★★★★

DIRECTOR: Ang Lee CAST: Will Smith, Clive Owen, Mary Elizabeth Winstead What if today’s Will Smith wanted to fight The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air? Well, thanks to some clever CGI, Will is able to do just that. He plays elite assassin Henry Brogan who goes head-tohead with his doppelgänger – a youthful, sinister clone. It’s like 2012 sci-fi action flick Looper, without the time travel.

THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD

★★★★★

DIRECTOR: Armando Ianucci CAST: Dev Patel, Tilda Swinton, Gwendoline Christie The original coming-of-age tale, David Copperfield’s (Dev Patel) awkward journey from boy to man is faithfully retold

Gemini Man

in this whimsical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic. Like last year’s Mary, Queen of Scots, director Armando Ianucci’s colourblind casting ensures this masterpiece reflects today’s world and that a new generation can relate to David’s timeless story.

MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL

★★★★★

DIRECTOR: Joachim Running CAST: Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning Picking up several years after the original, Aurora (Elle Fanning) agrees to marry Prince Phillip (Harris Dickinson) without Maleficent’s (Angelina Jolie) blessing. Big mistake – Miss M flies into a rage with Phil’s mum, Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer). Angelina Jolie facing off against Michelle Pfeiffer is definitely a film we want to see… just not this one.

ACTIVE // BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

Pink is Punk for Breast Cancer Awareness Month We chat to Guillaume Mariole, co-founder and CEO of the IGNITE Group, about IGNITE’s Pink is Punk initiative, raising vital funds for breast cancer research and support in the UAE What’s the inspiration behind IGNITE Pink is Punk? We’ve been organising IGNITE Pink is Punk for over 10 years now. At IGNITE, we help people stay active and healthy, so we wanted to do something fun and active to show our support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The importance of breast cancer awareness and supporting those affected is something that hits very close to home for me. My grandmother passed away from breast cancer, and from an early age it was ingrained in me by my mother that if I had daughters – which I now do – they would have to get checked. I’ve seen firsthand how breast cancer has affected my family. Our mothers, daughters, aunts, wives, all women deserve support and resources in terms of ongoing funding into research for a cure, treatment and early detection and, if they ever are affected, top-notch medical care and support. What events are you running this year? This year we have three fun events that fall under IGNITE Pink is Punk. The Swim:Run on Friday October 4 80_What’s On_10.2019

at Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort is open to anyone aged six and up. If you’re unable to swim, we also offer a 3km fun run. Spectators are also welcome and if they donate Dhs150 + VAT, they will receive a Pink is Punk T-shirt and goody bag. The Sunset Yoga on Monday October 8, also at Anantara The Palm, is for anyone 16 years of age and over, of any ability. The practice is designed to be inclusive

and enjoyable for all, but we do have limited spots, so we encourage everyone to sign up ASAP. The Pink Paddle on Friday October 11 at Riva Beach Club is for ages 10 and up. Distances range from 1km for juniors and 1.5km for fun paddlers up to 4.5km for elites, and there are boards available to rent. These unique events are filled with community spirit and we encourage

34 women with financial and social support. Depending on the individual and their insurance, some or all treatment may not be covered, and here in the UAE the cost of breast cancer treatment ranges from Dhs200,000 to Dhs 400,000 depending on the type of treatment and stage of cancer. Mini but mighty Monte Carlo Monaco measures just over two square kilometres – making it smaller than Central Park – but what it lacks in size it sure makes up for in personality…

A

magnet for gastronomes and high-rollers, Monte Carlo – one of the four ‘quarters’ of the Principality of Monaco – is one of the world’s most glamourous neighbourhoods. With its prime position overlooking Monaco’s main harbour, this grandiose area is where you’ll find the casino, the most lavish luxury hotels, top restaurants, and the fabulously fashion-conscious. Before you set off, add these must-dos to your itinerary...

THINGS TO DO PEOPLE-WATCH AT THE CAFÉ DE PARIS Located smack bang on the Place du Casino, which is pretty much the centre of the entire country, the Café de Paris, built in 1868, is the perfect place to don your sunglasses and stare… at everyone. Come early, nab a front-row seat on the terrace, order a buttery croissant and a coffee, and watch the wonderful world of Monte Carlo strut on by. q montecarlosbm.com

RELAX AT THERMES MARINS MONTE-CARLO

Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo

The world-class Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo is an enormous temple of wellness with luxe pool facilities, cuttingedge spa treatments and an emphasis on seawater and seaweed therapies. Head here for a relaxing aromatherapy massage followed by lunch on the glorious terrace at L’Hirondelle. The restaurant serves three daily-changing menus: one low-cal, one vegetarian, and one ‘full fat’.

Go for the full fat. If you’re lucky, it’ll be fresh burrata and tomatoes, seabass, and chocolate molten cake. q facebook.com/ ThermesMarinsMonteCarlo

SHOP (OR WINDOW SHOP) ALONG THE MONTE CARLO PROMENADE No surprises that shopping in Monaco is not ideal for shoe-string budgets. It’s all about high-end shops, in a concentrated cluster next to Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, where you’ll find over 40 of the world’s most prestigious luxury brands, from Cartier and Chanel to Gucci and Dior. 10.2019_What’s On_91

MONTE CARLO

WANDER UP TO THE PRINCE’S PALACE BEFORE NOON A nice way to work up an appetite is to walk up Le Rocher, the only part of Monaco to have retained its original old town. Here you’ll find the Palais Princier de Monaco (palais. mc), originally a fortress built in the 13th century, now the private residence of Monaco’s ruling family, the Grimaldi’s. Be there at bang on 11.55am to catch the changing of the guard. Then meander through the small, windy medieval lanes to the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco (musee.oceano.org). Built in 1910, it is one of the most impressive aquariums and

museums of ocean life in the world.

LOUNGE AROUND AT MONTE CARLO BEACH If you’re looking for a beach club with mega party vibes and loud music, the Monte Carlo Beach club isn’t it. But in our opinion, that’s a good thing. Instead you’ll find a luxe lido atmosphere where you can hobnob with the highsociety and Monegasque elite. Sit alongside the enormous swimming pool complete with retro diving boards, or pick a sunlounger on the jetty overlooking the ocean. qqmontecarlosbm.com

SASS CAFÉ Sass Café may have closed in Dubai last year, but business is booming in Monte Carlo. The plush velvety red dining room takes on a classy piano bar vibe every night from 11pm to 1am, after which it turns full club with live DJs. qqsasscafe.com

LE GRILL Located on the eighth floor of the legendary Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, Le Grill is a Michelin-starred restaurant that overlooks the glorious Place du Casino. The nearest international airport is Nice (which is only 25 minutes away)

idely regarded as one of the world’s most luxurious hotels, the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo – built in 1863 – has a history as rich as the people staying there. A stomping ground for famous faces including Frank Sinatra, Princess Grace Kelly and Winston Churchill, and more recently Julia Roberts and Lady Gaga, the hotel is a symbol of French Riviera grandeur and prestige located in the very heart of Monaco. After a $280million four-year makeover, the iconic hotel has been brought into the 21st century while maintaining the soul and signature features that made it world-famous to begin with. Today, this 150-year-old hotel is one of the key landmarks in

Monaco, often used in Hollywood movies, and you’re likely to run into some of Monaco’s wealthiest residents here, who don’t mind dropping the big bucks. The 5-star hotel has a plethora of room categories available, from a superior patio view for Dhs2,000 a night to the outrageous Prince Rainier III suite for an eyewatering Dhs161,400 a night. All are beautifully furnished with plump, gilt-edged beds and marble bathrooms. As you walk through the lobby, you’ll not fail to miss the large bronze statue of Louis XIV on horseback. The horse’s right knee is worn to a sheen from superstitious guests, who rub it for luck on their way to the casino, which happens to be right next door. If you want to linger and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of yesteryear, enjoy a nightcap at the hotel’s classy Bar Américain. The resident band, London Soul Section is superb. … SOME OF OUR GREAT EVENTS

IAN FAIRSERVICE Managing Partner & Group Editor

Last month I wrote about the What’s On World Cup Tour in 1982, when we brought together most of the victorious English squad led by Bobby Moore for a 10-day promotion around the Emirates. The magazine was three years old and it was our first major event. As the years have gone by, we have continued to innovate and for as long as I can remember, events have formed an integral part of our activities. The end of this month sees the special 40th Anniversary edition of What’s On Party in the Park, which for the first time takes place over two days. The indefatigable Fatboy Slim opens with his Halloween Special on Thursday, October 31, and from the same Media City Amphitheatre stage the following day, joint headliners The Kooks and Richard Ashcroft will be appearing, supported not just by the fantastic Lighthouse Family, but a host of local and international talent. Our last show with Liam Gallagher attracted over 9,000 revelers, our highest to date, hot on the heels of Lilly Allen and Stereophonics. Among my favourite events going back was “Diddy” David Hamilton headlining the What’s On Disco Tour around the Emirates in the ‘80s; the amazing cellist Julian Lloyd Webber who performed under our banner at the Dubai World Trade Centre; and the sensational Showaddywaddy, for whom we staged a beach concert – our very first Ram Rock – attracting around 3,000 people. A month or two later I found myself having dinner with the legendary Tina Turner after her first

Dubai appearance at the Hyatt Regency hotel in 1983. She had heard all about the Showaddywaddy beach concert, loved the concept and promised to return for our subsequent Ram Rock the following Spring. We kept in touch, it all seemed very promising until a few months later Private Dancer became her biggest Number One ever and she was rocketed back to international stardom with hit after hit. Correspondence soon dried up, the show never happened... and now she never writes, never calls.
