DANGER NO SPECTATORS BEYOND THIS POINT – means what it says Look after yourself and don’t place yourself or others in danger Plan to be in your chosen location 45 minutes before the first car is due Look after your children No dogs unless disabled-assistance dogs First aid is available at all stage car parks There might be random bag searches at some venues, please be patient and allow extra time

The FIA Safety Delegate will expect everyone to be in location when they come around, this will be 30-40 minutes before the first car is due. Marshals will give a long blow on their whistle to advise you that you MUST now be in your final location (and standing up). The Safety Delegate and/or the Organisers can and will cancel stages if people are not standing in appropriate places. Many competitors carry on-board cameras. The footage is viewed by Rally Control throughout the event. If spectators are seen in unacceptable locations the stage can and will be stopped.

Environment • • • • •

Take your litter home or put it in the bins provided. Black bin liners will be provided No fires or barbeques The ground WILL be uneven – it is a forest, tread carefully No fireworks Follow the countryside code

Suspicious items

Please ensure you keep your belongings with you at all times. Do not leave bags etc lying around if you move to a different viewing area. If you see an unattended or suspicious item: • Do not touch • Try to identify an owner in the immediate area • If you still feel it’s suspicious or you feel concerned, don’t be embarrassed or think anyone else will report it • Report it to the nearest marshal whether in a tabard near you or a radio marshal in their car. If it is before the competitors have started, please stop one of the safety cars and advise them of your concerns • Move away to a safe distance – ideally at least 100m

We want everyone to enjoy the event, to have fun and to go home safely. Please pay attention at all times and take responsibility for your own safety – and that of others.

RALLY CARS CAN DO THE UNEXPECTED SO, FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY AND THAT OF OTHERS, PLEASE:

It is a condition of entry that you agree to a search of your vehicle, property or person if selected.

• Respect the marshals and follow their instructions • Observe the colour-coded tape and all signage • Use the natural environment to protect yourself • Don’t walk on the rally stage • Stay standing and remain alert • Remember that alcohol and drugs can impair your responses and threaten your safety

To avoid disappointment, spectators should arrive at their chosen car park in plenty of time. Check what time the car park opens – some open the night before the stage goes live. Arriving a couple of hours before the stage starts is not usually sufficient time to guarantee a space.

Wrap up warm

Please make sure you dress to take full account of the weather. As you may be arriving or departing in the dark, please remember to bring a torch with you. Also remember to wear sturdy footwear for typical forest conditions. Please be aware that the weather in our earlier October date is often glorious, but it can also be wet and extremely cold, especially for the early morning and late afternoon stages.

Dogs

Please do not bring your dogs to the event as they can be startled by the loud noises and cause a danger to themselves or others – disabled-assistance dogs only are permitted (on leads at all times).

stages or in the spectator areas. Please do not attempt to access the rally by motorbike.

Drones

Please do not bring drones to the rally as their use is expressly prohibited on or near any part of the event, the stages or service area. Marshals will be empowered to ground any drone that attempts to fly during the event and, if required, the stage itself will be stopped.

Selfie sticks and action cameras

Use of selfie sticks and action cameras (such as GoPros) is not forbidden, however, spectators are reminded to use these in a sensible manner without putting themselves and others at risk. Action cameras MUST NOT be placed on the rally route where they are likely to get hit by cars.

Litter

Please take all litter home with you or place it in the skips or black bags provided for this purpose. Do not leave it in the forest.

Fires and fireworks

Please do not light fires or barbeques or bring fireworks to the event. They can cause serious incidents for other spectators or competitors and can also damage the forest.

WHERE TO GO

If you are visiting the event for the first time or just want a recommendation on where to catch the best action, you can check out these great stages:

Dayinsure Wales Rally GB is a Stage Rally motor sport event and forms part of the FIA World Rally Championship. The event takes place over four days of competition and each day is divided into a number of ‘Special Stages’ which are where the drivers race against the clock for the fastest time. For the rest of the event, they have to follow a pre-set schedule on normal public roads to get them to the next Special Stage on time. There are 23 Special Stages run over four days: one on Thursday, eight on Friday, nine on Saturday and five on Sunday. The timetable will tell you which stages are running when, normally indicated by the time the first car starts that stage. It is useful to look at this combined with the overall map (page 14-15) so that you can see where the stages are in relation to each other and the Deeside Rally Village, where the teams are based throughout the event.

Thursday: The action gets underway with the dazzling curtain-raiser under the spotlights at Tir Prince Raceway on Thursday evening. With high-flying jumps and flames lighting up the sky, this spectacular stage provides a dramatic and fitting opener to the weekend, and you won’t want to miss the autograph signing session taking place from approximately 17:50 until 18:30! Friday: Try out our new stage at Slate Mountain for a thrilling, twisting run over the stunning Snowdonia landscape. Run twice in quick succession, visitors will get a double dose of the action.

Coming for Saturday: Head to Sweet Lamb Hafren Car Park I for long views of the cars, a natural amphitheatre setting, spectacular water splashes and jump. Sunday: To witness the final stage of the event, it has to be the awe-inspiring setting of the Great Orme from where the cars will race into the streets of Llandudno for the first time. Buy a Grandstand seat for one of the best views (£20 per adult or £10 per child)!

8

GETTING THERE

Access to the Special Stages is by ticket only - you can buy in advance (£28 per adult per day (£23 for Sunday) / £15 per adult for the Visit Conwy Special Stage at Tir Prince) or pay on the gate (£30 per adult per stage). The only exception is Great Orme Llandudno, which is free to enter. Advanced tickets can be purchased for you to print out either over the phone, online here, or at the ticket office in the Deeside Rally Village. Each adult ticket, with the exception of Tir Prince and the Llandudno Grandstand tickets, comes with an event programme that you collect on arrival at the stage. Each stage has specially prepared car parks, which are normally forest tracks that lead to a part of the stage. These tracks can be muddy, uneven and quite long – the earlier you get there, the nearer the top of the car park you will be.

BUY TICKETS

You can buy tickets online here or by calling +44 (0)1492 817113, open 10:00-17:00 Monday-Friday, closed Saturday and Sunday.

FOR THE MORE ADVENTUROUS

Those with day passes or four-day World Rally Passes (£99) can plan a route to spectate at various different stages during the day. Most of the stages are run twice during the day giving those who choose not to move a double dose of the WRC stars. Once again, check the official Wales Rally GB timetable for full details and remember there’s also the National Rally running alongside the main WRC event on Friday and Saturday, which provides even more interest and entertainment. The National Rally timetable can be found on page 15.

FREE OF CHARGE ACCESS AREAS The Rally Village in Deeside is the ‘pits and paddock’ of the event where the teams prepare the cars for the challenges ahead. Each morning the cars start out from the Rally Village and return here in the early evening, as well as a lunchtime regroup on Friday. This is a great chance to gain a fantastic insight into the sport, access is totally FREE and there is an array of entertainments. The Rally Village is open 09:00 – 22:00 Thursday and Friday, and until 23:00 on Saturday – don’t miss the fantastic party atmosphere of the Saturday night. Other free admission areas during the event are the Friday lunchtime visit to central Newtown, Sunday’s regroup at Surf Snowdonia, and the Great Orme Llandudno street stage and ceremonial finish on Sunday.

the first time? From the car park you will be able to access one of the designated viewing locations, which are usually large areas in the forests/fields marked with yellow and black tape. These are the safest places to watch the dramatic action, but you should still heed important safety advice and always listen to the marshals, who are there to help keep you safe. Remember to bring lots of warm clothes – it is October after all! All stages feature catering units and public toilet facilities while the stages at Tir Prince, Slate Mountain, Sweet Lamb and Llandudno will also have some retail stands selling gifts and merchandise.

E N V I R O N M E N TA L S U S TA I N A B I L I T Y Dayinsure Wales Rally GB currently holds the FIA’s ‘Achievement of Excellence’ for its Environmental Sustainability work and we aim to build on this, further enhancing our ‘green status’. Behind the scenes a lot of work is being undertaken in order to protect the forests in which the rally takes place along with all of the other venues used and you, our loyal spectators, can play a key role to ensure that once the rally leaves an area no trace is left. We are not asking for you to do anything out of the ordinary, but just to be respectful to the environment you are coming into and follow the simple steps below to make this happen: • Leave no trace of your visit - use the on-site recycling bins, skips or bin bags (or even take your rubbish home with you) • Do not light fires or bring barbeques or fireworks to the event • Consider car sharing opportunities where possible • Follow the countryside code

Disabled access

Dayinsure Wales Rally GB welcomes disabled spectators and will do all that is possible to ensure a pleasurable experience. The stage rally environment is such that the majority of car parks and stages and other locations are likely to be physically demanding and rigorous. We are unable to offer dedicated disabled parking and viewing areas at most Special Stages. Therefore it is recommended that disabled customers who wish to attend the event consider the venues listed below: • Deeside Rally Village – Thursday, Friday and Saturday (free to view) • Autograph signing and SS1 Visit Conwy Tir Prince stage – Thursday • SS5 / SS6 Slate Mountain stage – Friday • SS11 / SS16 Sweet Lamb stage – Saturday • Newtown Regroup, Broad Street – Saturday (free to view) • SS21 / SS23 Great Orme Llandudno Street Stage – Sunday (free to view) • Ceremonial Finish in Llandudno – Sunday (free to view) Any disabled parking areas are allocated on a first come, first served basis and all disabled persons wishing to gain access to the dedicated car parking areas listed above will need to display their official Blue Badge in the car. The dress rehearsal. After the pre-event test, the recce and all the build-up, this classic North Welsh stage offers the last chance to make sure everything is ready for the crews ahead of the first competitive stage – they will be pushing their cars hard in an attempt to uncover any late-developing issues, but the commitment won’t be quite the same as when they’re back in these woods on Friday morning.

Elfyn Evans After all the pre-event stuff, it’s always good to get to Shakedown, get the car into stage mode before the main event. During Shakedown last year, Dan [Barritt, co-driver] and I realised things were going to work well with our Ford Fiesta WRC and the DMACK tyre. It would be nice to come out again with the same feeling.

Elfyn Evans I don’t think anybody knew what to expect from this new stage when it first appeared on the route last year, but there were a lot of people there and that gave it a nice feel for the first stage with a good atmosphere. Sitting so close to the A55, it’s probably one of the easiest stages for a lot of people to get in to.

The venue has full facilities: toilets, catering, disabled facilities. Tir Prince is located on the North Wales coast in Towyn, just off the A548 coast road. Parking restrictions will be in place in the surrounding areas. There are 2 main viewing areas: V1: Cars fly off the start line to join the trotting track before leaping over a jump in front of the main stand, cars can then be seen to travel around the track to the exit into the rear viewing area of the stage (V2). V2: The cars can be viewed through the entire section from the fast entry for 500m into a 360’ loop, jump and donut area on gravel.

The first competitive action between the trees is in the famous Clocaenog test this year. Using parts of the shakedown stage, this one is probably best remembered as the scene of Colin McRae’s crowning glory – when it was the final test of his 1995 World Championship-winning season. Clocaenog will provide plenty of action for the fans and a very useful loosener for the nearby Brenig stage to come next.

Elfyn Evans One of the first things you notice is that there are quite a lot of junctions in comparison with the rest of the route. While we’ve used this stage in shakedown, we haven’t been in here on the actual event for a few years. This has the potential to be one of the slipperiest stages – and it’s really tricky if it gets wet!

This is a combination of two brilliant stages from last year, Brenig and Alwen, using the woods on both sides of the B4501 – but many of you will probably best remember Brenig as the Power Stage in recent years. Once again, cars will use the roads around the shores of Llyn Brenig, but this time they will be in ‘stage’ mode for longer than ever before with the inclusion of Alwen.

Elfyn Evans Alwen is probably the more natural-feeling road in the combination of these two stages. The Tarmac section in Brenig always adds a little something extra – especially for Dan and me: it was after the Tarmac on this very stage that we celebrated our first World Rally Championship victory last year.

The B4501 is closed and the only access to the car parks is from the south via Cerrigydrudion (A5). A temporary clearway order will be in place on the B5105 and road closures on all minor roads around the stages. V4: Follow marshals’ instructions to cross the stage to an elevated viewing area for views of the cars along a very fast section of the stage through a sequence of fast bends. Competitors are in view for about 500m. Direct access is to this viewing area only. A longer walk back through the car park will give access to the other viewing areas.

V1: Offers a variety of viewing areas and elevations where the cars can be viewed through a long series of fast, flowing bends and a hairpin. V2: Two viewing areas where cars can be seen over a very fast approach into tight right-hand bends. V 3: Competitors will be in view for about 300m through a very fast section and then through a tight right bend.

It’s into the heart of the Snowdonia National Park for the return of another classic. Penmachno hasn’t been used for five years – and it’s never been used in such an entertaining format as it will this time around. Like the Brenig and Alwen stages earlier in the day, the longer Penmachno test comes courtesy of Conwy Council’s new road-closing powers allowing the organisers to make the most challenging set-up yet.

Elfyn Evans The road is quite quick following the contour of the valley with some hairpins to climb up. The longer stage combining the north and south stages includes a stretch on public roads where we‘ll fly across an asphalt junction from one side of the woods to the next – it’s good to have a longer stage to get stuck into.

Penmachno village will be closed off to spectators and the roads surrounding the area will be the subject of traffic restrictions and road closure orders, in some places clearways will also be enforced. V1: A combination of a fast, flowing downhill sweeping bend, leading into a tight hairpin left. The viewing is on raised banking and in an area of mature trees. V2: Long views of the cars as they travel through an open area with both a fast right and then sweeping left bends into a short, technical section before they disappear from sight. Viewing is from a raised banking with some mature trees around the arena.

The stage runs close to an existing tourist attraction, which means there’s a great infrastructure on site. The test itself is an interesting one with some nice open corners where you’ll see the cars drifting beautifully. The good thing about this stage is that the crews are competing twice in quick succession; once you’ve seen your favourite driver, stay where you are – they’ll be back in seven minutes.

Elfyn Evans This is a brand new stage. From pictures and the illustrations of how it could work, it looks like it’s going to be pretty exciting. I think the fans will enjoy it. You’ll get a real sense of the acceleration and grip these cars can generate. It’s quite short, but it won’t be easy, especially on the slate surface.

REMEMBER – if you think it’s suspicious – say something

A r r i v e at t h e B i k e s Motor, trail, quad and car parks in bikes are not p l e n t y o f t i m e mountain permitted on the rally Availability at any stage car park will be on a first come, first served basis and is not guaranteed – even for World Rally Pass holders.

Elfyn Evans This is a fantastic stage, always one of the drivers’ favourites. It’s probably the widest road we use during the whole rally and that, combined with the good, hard surface, means that you can really press on in here. Coming down through the windfarms is so impressive in these WRC cars, you really feel the speed in the car.

Follow the pathway from the head of the car park for 350 metres to reach a spectator area on an open hillside. It offers long-distance views of the cars sweeping down through the wind farm, passing briefly behind a hill to emerge from a small cutting midway through a long left bend then, in front of the elevated viewing area, tackling a long and wide over-square right bend.

Viewing areas

V1: Extensive viewing from the hillside around the Sweet Lamb Bowl. The cars are visible for almost two kilometres, they approach along a fast downhill, cross the river bridge then jump into a twisty section and hairpin bend in the bowl, followed by the water splash and away up the hill. There will also be excellent viewing from the top of the car park as competitors pass close by.

V2: Accessed from the head of the car park, viewing is under the forest canopy at a fast slight uphill approach to a sharp hairpin left.

CAR PARK K 1.25 miles

Elfyn Evans Two of the classics, but for different reasons: Hafren is a challenge and Sweet Lamb has given us some of the most iconic pictures in this event’s history. Some of my best memories of watching this rally are of standing in Sweet Lamb bowl, watching Colin [McRae] with the fireworks in the dark, it was just mega.

The entrance to car park K leads directly to V2 (left).

V3: From the head of the car park, this area is under the forest canopy and overlooks tight technical uphill bends. V4: From the mid-point of car park is an exposed clearfelled site with earth banks, offering good distant views.

Viewing areas

V1: A choice of viewing areas, all on banking under the forest canopy. See cars climbing from the valley before turning square right then fast left whilst accelerating away.

A470 will be a temporary clearway between Mallwyd and Cemmaes Road. All other minor access roads will be closed. V3: Walking from the top of the car park will take you to cleared walkways and raised earth bank standing areas, which provide close-proximity viewing of the stage. From a high-speed twisty approach competitors turn left through a junction before accelerating away uphill.

Safety cars

Please do not move between the Dyfi and Gartheiniog stage car parks in the interval between runs. The access roads are single track, with potentially serious bottlenecks. Congestion here could affect the main trunk roads. Should this occur the police will close the access and the car park exits completely.

V2: Continue to follow the footpath through V1 for 600m to see a fast downhill approach into a sweeping right-hand bend.

Elfyn Evans I like this one – I say ‘like’, but that’s only because I love the next one in Gartheiniog! These roads in the Dyfi [forest] complex just above Machynlleth are really at the heart of this event. I love the way they flow with some great long corners. Running in reverse is a bit different, but it’ll be just as good.

Like Dyfi, this Gartheiniog stage has been shortened slightly from last year – but this one runs in the same direction as 2017. It sits just across the road from Dyfi, so the nature of the road and grip level is virtually identical. And it’s just as popular!

Elfyn Evans My favourite. Like Dyfi, it’s about the way the road flows and the speed you can carry. I could come out of it and go straight back to the start for another go. It pulls you in and encourages you to push harder and harder – even the banks at the side of the road are quite kind, although I probably shouldn’t say that!

A470 will be a temporary clearway between Mallwyd and Cemmaes Road. All other minor access roads will be closed. V1: Easily reached from the car park head and, uniquely for the event, gives up close viewing of the special stage start and the first 90-degree left junction. V2: Follow the spectator pathway within the trees for 200m to a junction where competitors turn square left from a fast approach. V3: Just before V2, cross the track at the official crossing point, follow the footway down through the trees and forest road for 300m.

Opposite direction to last year and a bit shorter. The two car parks off the B4395 still offer some of the best viewing with the cars carrying plenty of speed through what’s been known in recent years as Irish Corner and into a hairpin. Elfyn Evans It’s a bit of a shame this one has been shortened for live TV. Dyfnant has always been such a big part of the story of this event and plenty has happened in here down the years. Even running at this reduced length, it’ll still be a real challenge. Like the other stages on Saturday, this one is a driver’s stage.

V1: Follow the marshals’ instructions and cross the track only at the official crossing point. Pathways give access to viewing area of a square left junction and fast left bend. V2: Follow the signs from the head of the car park (via horse trail 67) to join the stage with open viewing of a series of flowing right and left-hand bends. V3: Follow the signs from the centre of the car park (via horse trail 68 ), the viewing area is on the exit of the flowing bends at V2. V 4: Approx 2km from the car park entrance, this is the main area for spectating and contains a tight hairpin left turn.

This single-run test is a great way to wake yourself up on Sunday morning. Out just about sunrise, the views from high above Betws-y-Coed will be special… almost as special as the action on the stage itself. The nature of this one is similar to Gwydir, which follows. It’s more of a parkland-type stage rather than the intense, deep forests of Mid Wales.

There is no parking on the A5 and A470, further road closure restrictions will be in place on the surrounding roads.

Viewing areas

V1: Viewing area is at the head of the car park. Competitors approach the location through a fast section, into a fast left & right that tightens into a hairpin left, competitors exit into a fast long right. Competitors are in sight for approximately 15-20 seconds. Viewing is on a banking, with shelter from some mature trees.

Elfyn Evans I’ve got to be honest here, while the name of this stage rings a bell, I really can’t remember too much about it! I do have a feeling I’ve driven this one at some point before, but I just can’t place it. I’ve no doubt that it’ll be a great start to what could well be a really exciting final day for us in Wales.

 Betws-y-Coed This is another of the stages which has benefited from the use of closed roads. All but the first five kilometres of this one are new and there’s 1.16km of asphalt in here. This first run of the Gwydir test doubles as the Power Stage, which means live TV and five bonus points for the fastest time set. Expect the crews to be really on it through here – at the business end of the season, every point counts.

Elfyn Evans This one has changed a bit – we’re going to have work to do on the recce with some new roads, including some asphalt to link together the sections of forest. The stages in this part of Wales are quite different from Mid Wales. Gwydir is a tricky, technical road, narrow with lots of overhanging trees and branches.

There will be several road closure orders to shut all the minor roads in the vicinity of the stage. The B5106 from Betws-Y-Coed to LLanrwst will be closed, only approach via Llanrwst. V1: This viewing area has a fast / medium left-hand bend that leads into a fast open hairpin left with good viewing on raised banking. Area is protected by mature trees. Access from location A. V2: This viewing area has a crest, a square left at a junction exiting to several sweeping bends with good viewing on raised banks. The area is protected by mature trees. Access from location B. V3: Viewing area is located at the far end of the car park. Competitors are on a Tarmac section of the stage, which is very technical - the road is narrow, twisty and bumpy. Viewing will be from the field on the opposite side of the road from the car park and is exposed to the weather. Access from location B.

There’s nothing new about the WRC touring Marine Drive – the road around the Great Orme headland – but carrying the stage into the centre of Llandudno is new. The cars will come off the Orme and into the town, finishing the stage on the seafront. As well as the WRC showdown, Sunday will be packed with entertainment in Llandudno. Elfyn Evans The Great Orme is really challenging. If it comes down to a big fight on the final day, getting this right will be vital; you have to give the Orme a lot of respect, because it can bite. This time, however, we keep going into Llandudno. That’s going to be a surreal experience. The atmosphere will be pretty special!

Many of the town centre roads will be closed due to the street stage. V1: Offers great viewing as the cars take a long sweeping right-hand bend before accelerating into a series of twists and turns.

High speed, technical stage with a variety of viewing opportunities available.

V2: Above the mid point of the Orme, see the cars accelerating on an undulating straight before a sweeping left-hand bend and then disappearing around the headland.

V4: Several areas of the upper part of the town will offer excellent viewing, seeing the cars twice as they take on the challenge of the Tarmac street stage on forestry tyres. Always follow signage. Also offers views of the finish and podium.

V3: Elevated viewing from above the Zigzags, cars passing through a fast section of road.
