CitroĂŤn Museum

Art in the marketplace 5

A modern and contemporary arts museum in the CitroĂŤn garage? Yes, with one condition: to bring to this neighborhood of Brussels a place that conciliates the different populations around. This because the building is located at a border between a business district, a popular neighborhood, and several quarters still in transition. Converting such a building should admittedly benefit tourism, but first and foremost the locals. The project thus considers a food market: a useful and local function. The stands of the market are located at street level in the former workshops, and they continue onto the Canal quays. Market and museum are separated by a large indoor street bordered with bars and fast food stands. The showroom is home to the permanent collection of the museum, while exposition “boxesâ€?, connected by walkways, are suspended above the market. Their bright colors draw attention and entice customers to discover the museum. 6

Hamburg Hybrid Housing Competition Renovation of a place and housing 13

St. Pauli’s neighborhood in Hamburg is historically popular (first for sailors’ families) and has become dynamic and leisure – and spectacle – oriented (theatres, cabarets…). The Spielbundenplatz, that has stayed unused since the famous gas station Esso Tankstelle was closed and demolished, is the subject of a contest for a mixed development (including a majority of housing). The project reinterprets the shape of the block: the bars are arranged obliquely in order to open the central parkland as a public park. The bars overlay, intertwine and hinge on vertical circulation points. The building hosts commercial or community activities – such as a new gas station, associations, local shops, etc. – at street level and on the floors above. The standard housing as well as the youth hostel enjoy large roof gardens. An area dedicated to young artists and the children of the neighborhood brings a free cultural space, thus perpetuating the spirit of the Reeperbahn. 14

Genoa Blueprint Competition At the water’s edge 19

While having been constructed with its back to the harbor, the city of Genoa is now trying to take up with the sea again. The Blueprint Competition focuses on a part of it: the Fiera di Genova, a former industrial harbor accommodating shipyards and exhibitions. But how to live near the water ? How to create a neighborhood from scratch, one that would be separated from the rest by a difference in level, a road and a canal? The place itself must become attractive outside of exhibition times or hours, dense, with a real community life. The project lets the water enter the site, allowing bathing, nautical sports and access by boat. The numerous little housing towers balance the dimensions of the Blue Pavilion and the Palasport. A promenade connects the whole of it to the Porto Antico through a large public place, ending at the feet of the buildings. Some display, at street level, craftmanship, Horeca, local shops; one of the towers houses offices and apartment hotels. 20

The Métropole building

A library at the “marais du Wiels” 27

This exercise focuses on reassigning the Métropole building, whose façade is listed, and to implant a library as well as another function left to decide (here, a repair center) by adding a spot of identical dimensions. The “marais du Wiels”, not far from Brussels Midi train station, is already under an ongoing residential development project. The masterplan here is adapted to make it more open, with garden-promenades for public spaces, and the rehabilitation of an underground passage, below the railway, to gain access to the rear of the neighborhood. The main entrance of the Métropole’s façade highlights the crossing path under the building. The lateral shift of both sides creates interactions between the repair center, the library’s front desk and the public space. Common circulation is thus created in this buffer zone, facilitating communication between the uses: reading, night classes, coworking for craftspersons and small companies.

Gare Maritime

ULB Faculty of architecture at Tour & Taxis 35

The future “arts campus” gathers 3 faculties under the same roof: art, architecture and craftsmanship. Just like the 1920s Bauhaus school, this hub intends to reestablish a dialogue between the disciplines mentioned, but without any hierarchy. Reasserting the worth of manual labor, offering a place of culture and leisure at the gateway to a working-class area… The faculties can also make the most of the proximity of the “construction village” at Tour & Taxis. The main covered market hall goes across the site, lined by two smaller vegetated ones, that set up a separation filter towards the study spaces. The promenade assumes various ambiances, edged as it is with expositions, physical activities, food stands and trucks, and it provides a view of the dynamical workspaces – workshops, conference hall, library, fablab, large-scale workshops…
