From the President-Elect
I hope everyone is having a great year as we get closer to wrapping up 2022. I’m looking forward to my upcoming year as MVMA President. My vet career has been an incredible journey and becoming MVMA President has been a dream of mine since getting into Veterinary School at Mizzou in 2004.
Growing up on a farm in northwest Missouri, I was able to get exposure to large animal medicine on a daily basis, raising cattle and pigs. Through family connections, I was able to land a job out of high school at Eagle Animal Hospital in Kansas City cleaning
cages. Following graduation, I was able to return to Eagle as an associate of the then 4 doctor practice. Eventually, I became an owner with Dr. Jim Sparks where we grew to a 15-doctor practice with 3 locations. Appreciating all subsets of our profession, I look forward to collaborating with all our membership across the state.
This year the convention theme will be “Stay in the game”. We have a great line up of speakers including our special keynote speaker. Realizing we all have lots of options for continued education, our goal was to emphasize wet labs for hands on training.
We are excited to announce former Missouri head football coach Gary Pinkel as our keynote speaker to the MVMA convention. Coach Pinkel
was recently inducted into the college football hall of fame and was the head coach at Missouri from 2001-2015.
Sports taught me valuable leadership lessons that I was able to carry into my professional career. It’s an honor for us to have Coach share his leadership skills with us this January at the convention.
So please be sure to register and enjoy all the speakers as well as connecting with old friends.

Something special: On Saturday, MU-CVM early-career veterinarians are invited to a reception/forum to network and share experiences with each other. Later on Saturday, DVM students are invited to gather for a mixer to ask questions of early-career veterinarians.
The MVMA holds its Annual General Membership Meeting and Breakfast on Saturday morning with additional continuing education workshops throughout the day.
For Veterinary Technicians and Practice Staff: Throughout the weekend, veterinary technicians will have the ability to attend the same continuing education sessions as veterinarians. Also, a technician/practice staff reception is planned for Saturday with lots of swag from Hill’s Pet Nutrition.
On Friday, you’ll want to attend the Veterinary Business Management Association/MVMA Student-Vet Networking event (formerly called “Speednetworking”). CVM students and veterinarians meet and greet to match up for mentorship, preceptorships, and contacts for future postgraduation employment. An opportunity for an all-around win-win.
The MVMA welcomes Gary Pinkel as our keynote speaker at the General Membership Session Saturday morning.
Gary Pinkel was born in Akron, Ohio — the same state he’d begin his coaching career two decades later. At Kent State, he played with Alabama head coach Nick Saban.
His first head-coaching job was at the University of Toledo in 1991. There, he holds the record with the most wins in school history (73-37-3) and was voted MAC Coach of the Year in ’95.
Pinkel’s next — and final stop — would be in Columbia, Missouri, where he took over a program with just one 10-win season in school history and two winning seasons in the previous 17 years. As the head coach at the University of Missouri from 2001-15, Pinkel led the Tigers to five 10-win or more seasons, ten winning seasons, and earned the most wins in MU history at 118-73.
Since retirement, Pinkel heads up the GP M.A.D.E Foundation. The non-profit organization supports children battling leukemia or lymphoma; children facing physical challenges; and children working to overcome socioeconomic challenges.
A photo opportunity and autograph session will be set up after his presentation.
Many MVMA members come to the MVMA Convention planning to “refill their bucket”. Not only can you expect this to happen during Coach Pinkel’s address but every year the Saturday evening’s events are the highlight of the weekend. Start out with an MVMA members reception where stories and laughter are shared across the room followed by the infamous MVMA Awards Ceremony where presentations are made to highlight some of the unsung heroes in the profession. Stick around after the awards ceremony for fellowship with family, friends, and colleagues. A meal is available with a pre-purchased ticket but not required for the awards presentations.
Sunday continues with the MVMA/MU-CVM Breakfast With the College and another half-day of lectures and labs.

MU-CVM Students Move Into Clinical Training
The University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2024 celebrated their progression into clinical training during the annual White Coat Ceremony held Sunday, Oct. 16, 2022, at the Missouri Theatre. The ceremony is held to celebrate the successful completion of their didactic studies and the beginning of their hands-on training in the Veterinary Health Center, Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory and during preceptorships in private practices and public agencies on their way to completing their DVM degree.
The 120 students selected a family member, friend or mentor to present and assist them in donning their laboratory coats. Prior to the coat presentation, UM President Mun Choi, PhD, addressed the class. He reminded the students that they all bring different experiences and backgrounds, and he encouraged them to use their unique perspectives to enrich the college and to engage and learn from each other.
CVM Interim Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Leah Cohn, DVM, PhD, served as the emcee and welcomed the crowd. She spoke to the diversity of careers within the veterinary profession that the students should explore during the next 19 months of their education,
“I know all our students have been looking forward to this day, not only because they will finally enter clinics, but because this also means they are closer to the end then they are to the beginning of their four years of professional training,” she said. “At this time, we
have chosen to present the traditional white laboratory coat as a symbol of medicine and surgery. Please recognize the diversity and all the professional choices this coat represents, including those that require coveralls and boots rather than lab coats.”
CVM Dean Carolyn Henry, DVM, MS, told the students that they are ambassadors for the college and the veterinary profession.
“Your success as a veterinarian will have more to do with your interactions with people than any other single variable,” she said. “This will become particularly important as it pertains to your ability to communicate with clients, demonstrate empathy, and provide quality service.”
She closed with words of advice: “When you fail, be resilient. When you succeed, be humble. When you see others struggling, be compassionate. When you’ve been helped, be grateful. And when you take that first step in your white coat, take a deep breath, and enjoy the moment. This is a moment in your journey that you have been dreaming about for a long, long time, and you are so very deserving! Your mindset is everything, and the best is yet to come.”
Edward Migneco, DVM, president of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association and Julie Braun, executive director of MVMA, presented each student in the class with a name badge, courtesy of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation.
Groundbreaking Ceremony Celebrates Diagnostic Laboratory Addition
The University of Missouri held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday to mark the beginning of a project to expand and renovate the College of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory. Plans include building a 34,200-gross-square-foot addition to the existing building, which will also undergo renovations. The existing VMDL was constructed in 1974 and comprises 21,144 gross square feet. It no longer meets space needs and is not conducive to implementing current biosecurity and biosafety protocols.
College of Veterinary Medicine Dean Carolyn Henry spoke of some of the work that takes place within the VMDL and how the new facility will enhance the college’s service to the state.
“The VMDL team performs more than 167,000 diagnostic
tests each year, and that provides support to veterinary practitioners, livestock and poultry interests, wildlife conservationists, researchers, and government officials and industry. The addition to the building will add 34,200 square feet. It will permit us to have separate receiving areas and laboratories for routine and high risk foreign animal diseases so that we can prevent diseases from going beyond our borders by early detection,” she said.
CVM alumni Missouri Rep. Kent Haden, DVM ’76 spoke of the importance of the VMDL to provide rapid diagnoses to prevent disease outbreaks from spreading.
Clark Fobian, DVM ’77, who was Haden’s lab partner while in veterinary school, spoke of the overlapping missions of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association and the CVM and why the MVMA members had worked to gain support for the project.

gary Pinkel : coach and Mentor
As the head coach at the University of Missouri from 2001-15, Pinkel lead the Tigers to five 10-win or more seasons, ten winning seasons, and earned the most wins in MU history at 118-73.
Sign up to provide a student with a meal ticket for the Satur day night after-awards buffet dinner. With a special student sponsorship price of $25 per ticket, you can help us welcome veterinary students to our MVMA.
On the convention registration form, choose to buy one or more student meal tickets.
Our student meal spon sors will be recognized in the student’s packets, on signage at the event, and via electronic media.
If there is a special student you have in mind, we can send them a personalized recognition of your support for their meal. Your help is appreciated to welcome our students to dinner, to make them feel at home, and to encourage them to contribute to the convention.

Popular MVMA Equine Dental Seminar has another successful year.
MVMA Hosts Equine Dental Seminar
It was a busy weekend for 15 veterinarians who at tended the MVMA Equine Committee’s Fall Equine Dental Seminar. The course was held September 30-October 2, 2023 at the Missouri Humane Soci ety’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch and offered 18.5 hours of MVMA Academy-approved continuing education. The seminar attracted attendees from as far away as Montana, Utah and Virginia. The lecture was sponsored by PowerFloat, Inc., Zoetis Animal Health and the MVMA.
The course covered oral cavity anatomy/physiol ogy; dental instruments and techniques; sedation techniques; dental pathology and treatment; and a hands-on dental wet lab utilizing rescued horses at the Humane Society’s farm.
Veterinarian attendees performed various dental treatments at no charge on 39 of the ranch’s horses waiting for adoption. The dollar value of these services is estimated at over $8,000. The expertise of these veterinarians underscores the need to involve a licensed veterinarian in equine dental care. Equine dentistry practiced without the involvement of a veterinarian is illegal and unauthorized without oversight in the State of Missouri.
The presenters at the lecture were Dr. Dennis Rach and Dr. Bruce Whittle. Dr. Rach is a former member of Moore & Co. Veterinary Ser vices, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He continues to develop new modalities for equine dentistry. Dr. Bruce Whittle is a predominantly large animal veterinarian and co-owner of a mixed animal practice with his wife, Gayla, in Trenton, Missouri. He has a passion for dentistry and has been actively involved in teaching dentistry short courses at numerous veterinary colleges through the AAEP since 2009
