Letter from Editors
Dear readers, Our main article was about the Harlem Renaissance, which a very important recent event. We chose this to be our main article because of its effect on the U.S. and equality. It helped to finally bring whites and blacks together without segregation and discrimination, and helped show African American culture. Before the Renaissance, many blacks had to live in horrible apartments, where they had little room and did not reach sanitary requirements. This was unfair compared to the luxurious houses whites had. There were also the Jim Crow laws in the south, which created segregation. Blacks couldn’t do anything together with the whites, and received poorer quality ways of life. Discrimination was present both in the north and south and a lot of it targeted blacks. Langston Hughes as a child.
We felt that this was a very serious issue, so we wanted to see if anything was being done about. We learned about the Harlem Renaissance and we were excited. The Harlem Renaissance had created an environment where blacks and whites could live together without fighting or discrimination. The Renaissance also provided blacks the decent housing they’ve always needed. Along with this, there was the introduction to culture. Whites could finally see the traditions of blacks. Art and music were shown and sang, and were also accepted. With the cultures combined, there was no more quarrelling, and whites and blacks were able to live together. In order to write this article, our group split up in order to research different parts of the Renaissance. This made it easy for each of us to cover different parts of the article so we could get each part could have as much focus and importance as the others. We were able to the art styles and traditions that were introduced, and meet some of the jazz musicians. We tried our best to research in the best ways possible and we think we did well. We hope you enjoy the feature article and our magazine. Sincerely, The Editors.

Letter to the editor Dear editor, I've been following the “Monkey Trials case for awhile now and I want to share my opinion. Me personally, I believe in both religion and evolution. I do think that banning the teaching of evolution is stupid and goes against the first amendment. I’ve heard that the judge favors religion and Darrow has a slim chance of winning. I think teaching evolution should be protected in every state just like religion.

Dear editors,
are slowly becoming more and more affordable, and there are more than 22 million cars on the streets! Housing is another good, affordable
I very much agree with you opinion on thing. Some houses go as cheap as 3,000 urban life. Urban life is the cat’s pajamas. It’s dollars! It’s also fun to see different plans for bustling, and full of life. You are free to be housing, as cities get more regional styles. yourself and try new things. It does not surprise me that more than half of the nation’s population lives in urban areas. I guess that the brave soldiers in the war couldn’t resist moving to the cities once they saw them, especially compared to their former rural life. Rural life doesn’t seem to have all the freedom of the urban life, and you can’t try something new without being glared at. Urban life is much more social and enjoyable.
Another great thing about Urban life is shopping. There are so many things to buy, especially with credit. Cars are the greatest thing to buy. It’s the goat’s whiskers to be able to drive around the streets. It’s especially great that cars

At the time it seem like a bad idea to ban alcohol. However kids futcher seem to be going fine out of all of this. Kids have been making gangs, but they did not dranking, and they did not do a lot of shooting at people. Articles did not talk a lot about them, so it must be fine for them right? By now people have been calling it the lawless decade. People still drinking when they’re not supposed to, rise in crime and corruption between the politicians and the police, what a century.

received from people who have passed away. Calvin was also known as “Silent Cal,” for he didn’t seem to talk much. Calvin could be found napping on some days. On other days, he would sometimes relax on his porch, and watch everything go by.
President G. Harding President Warren G. Harding won the presidency by a rockslide with his promise of bringing America “back to normalcy.” Harding wanted the U.S. to be in its state before the war. In order to do this, Harding tried some different methods. Harding came up with the Free Enterprise System. The Free Enterprise System allowed for the private ownership of a property. He also had the Fiscal Policy, which was his approach to taxes and government spending. The Fiscal Policy let to a drop in prices and increased employment. Unfortunately, not all was the bee’s knees. Harding’s presidency was filled with scandals. Many of his friends were also involved in the government. One his friends, Forbes, sold hospital supplies to a private firm. Harding stopped the selling, but then later allowed it to continue. We also can’t forget the Teapot Dome Scandal, which was huge. Following Harding was Calvin Coolidge. Coolidge tried to follow in Harding’s footsteps with the normalcy. Coolidge came up with Inheritance taxes, which were taxes on assets
Not only that, but Calvin didn’t get involved with much. He has said he fits in “By avoiding the big problems.” Calvin also didn’t get involved in foreign affairs very much at all. As many of us know, the stock market has crashed very recently. Many of us found stocks to be very useful, and are in big trouble now that it’s all gone. Me and many others are hoping that Herbert Hoover might be able to solve our stock problems, but only time can tell.

Economy
The past decade has been one of massive change and prosperity. Cars were made affordable, People can now buy things on credit, hundreds of new inventions were made, most of which run on the electricity that is now sent to most homes in america. Even if you don’t buy things on credit, the average wage has doubled, meaning that you can buy your family a car. Refrigerators allowed for food to be kept for longer, and other inventions like dishwashers, vacuums, and electric ovens were all made available to buy. Of course, with the good comes the bad, as many people looking to make a profit bought undeveloped land in Florida to later make money off of. However, as many of you have had a first hand experience with, a hurricane hit the land and much it was never developed. The economy has skyrocketed in this past decade, not only due to these good things but also the stock market. There were so many rags to riches stories it was hard to keep track, and the more stocks people bought, the higher they rose. You didn’t even need the money, as you could buy stocks on credit.
The New York Stock Exchange floor
However, as we sadly know, recently the stock market crashed. The price of many stocks rapidly fell, and as they did no one could pay off their loans, sending the economy into a downwards spiral. As we look forward into the seemingly bleak future, we can only hope that the prosperity of this past decade will one day return, bringing riches for all.
The Harlem Renaissance In the last two decades, many African Americans have moved from the south up to the north because of discrimination and the crop destroying boll weevils. Many organizations were created to help blacks that had moved to the north, such as National Urban League and NAACP. When they came, a lot of African Americans moved to Harlem because of the cheap housing. Later, African americans moved to Harlem because of the great visionaries that lived there and to escape the poverty of Black Bohemia. One of the art forms that African americans use is poetry. One of the most famous poets is Langston Hughes. Langston got his rise to fame because he accidentally left his poems near a famous poet. This poet liked his poems and showed them to a magazine. Langston's now famous poems were written with the goal of showing people what racism was like. A photo of Langston Hughes
A painting made during the Renaissance.
Another art form was art itself. The paintings and sculptures made by African American artists are controversial, not only to whites who believed that African Americans couldn’t make good art, but to african americans who thought that the art portrayed a racist image. Still, some of the artists who made this art, such as Aaron Douglas, sought only to use elements of African art in their work. Poems and art aren’t the only things that were used to express African American culture. Various writers such as James Weldon Johnson and Zora Neal Hurston took topics such as the lives of African Americans in the south, and turned them into books.
During the Harlem Renaissance, Musicians like Bessie Smith, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton (Jelly Lord) and Duke ellington were all famous for creating and performing music. Bessie was famous for selling millions of her records but mostly in the south and the ghettos of the North. Her records brought her a very good amount of money but she spent it as fast as it came. A guy named Langston said that “her music was too basic for the general public “ and few white people in the 1920s knew her name. Bessie was also known as the Empress of the Blues. Louis Armstrong was famous for his music ability. He was the most skilled player in his band. He was born poor and never past the 3rd grade. He was also known as “Pops.” Armstrong's father left his family when he was just a child. Jelly Roll Morton (or the Jelly Lord) was known to be very good at his trumpet solos. He told everyone that he was the “inventor of jazz.” Jelly apparently liked to travel a lot. He left New Orleans in 1908 and traveled to Texas, Chicago, St. Louis, New York, Memphis, Mexico, California, and finally back to Chicago in the early 1920s. By the time he got back to Chicago, he was sporting a diamond in his upper teeth. Below is a picture of Louis Armstrong.
Duke Ellington. Duke Ellington is one of the most famous musicians of our time. His band first played at the famous Cotton Club in 1927, and they were an instant hit. However, he actually started his band in 1923 after a brief time playing ragtime piano. His band’s music is so popular not only because it is comprised of some of the best musicians, but also because Duke Ellington writes music directly for his band members, rather than for the band as a whole. Despite the overwhelming popularity of jazz, some people didn’t like the new music type. They thought that the fast rhythms and improvisation were part of what contributed to the loosening of moral standards. The Harlem Renaissance was a time of great cultural mixing, where African American culture thrived and influenced white culture. As Harlem’s popularity grew, more people moved to this cultural center, and it’s popularity grew even more.
