At the Children’s Cancer Hospital at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, the Children’s Art Project is a virtual Santa Claus, funding many programs that make life better for children with cancer. The project’s office is one of those places where it’s Christmas all year long - staff and volunteers work to produce the cards and gifts whose sales fund summer camps, college scholarships, ski trips, in-hospital classrooms, child life workers and other exciting activities for young cancer patients. While they may be in treatment for cancer, these pediatric patients never put their lives on hold. The young cancer patients in the Children’s Cancer Hospital are the elves who busily create the artwork featured on all the cards, ornaments, ceramics, t-shirts and more. For Holiday 2008, artwork from some 40 patient artists is part of the collection. The project has contributed more than $24.5 million dollars to fund programs that benefit cancer patients and their families in both the Children’s Cancer Hospital and M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Houston welcomed the 2008 designers at a kickoff event in Hermann Park this fall. With the help of Gexa Energy and the Hermann Park Conservancy, the 2008 holiday collection for the Children’s Art Project and the new M. D. Anderson Train Station at Hermann Park were both launched. The pediatric artists and their “celebrity media buddies” were greeted by a band and cheers when their special holiday express train arrived at the station. Media escorts introduced the creative patients to a welcoming crowd of hospital staff, family and friends. Special thanks to our community partners like Gexa Energy, Continental Airlines and AmREIT that help us make life better for children with cancer.

It’s very easy to fill Shae Jester’s stocking! She is a very feminine little girl, and she loves to dress up. Her grandmother buys the smallest size high heels she can find at discount stores so Shae can wear them with her assortment of costumes and old jewelry. She dances to Hannah Montana, her favorite star, and she loves her new dog Bailey, a Black Lab, and her cat, Mooshie. You can also give her things for her baby dolls. She takes very good care of all of them. At night they have to be laid out perfectly and covered with little blankets. This may sound like an idyllic young life, but Shae and her family have also battled cancer. In the summer of 2007, her family was preparing to move from Blanco, Texas to Evanston, Wyoming. Shae’s dad is a wildlife biologist, and he had been hired by the Nature Conservancy of Wyoming. At the going away party the night before they left Texas, three-year old Shae was very sick. Her leg began hurting, and that ache grew into an excruciating pain. The move to Wyoming had to be delayed until mom, dad and big sister Shelby could find out what was wrong with Shae. It was quickly discovered that she had neuroblastoma—a tumor under her right kidney was pushing on her spine and causing the pain in her leg. Surgery removed 90 percent of the tumor and was followed by chemotherapy. Her hair and eyelashes disappeared during the chemo. Much to her mother’s relief, hair and thick, long eyelashes have reappeared! Dad had to go on to Wyoming while mom and Shelby moved in with family in Houston for Shae’s treatment. During her treatment at the Children’s Cancer Hospital at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Shae connected with her primary physician, Dr. Peter Zage, clinic nurse Colette Badeaux, nurse practitioner Peg Parmeter and Cad Willeford, one of the child life specialists at the Children’s Cancer Hospital. She helped nurses flush a port (the area where chemo therapy connects to the patient), pulled off band-aids and helped with other simple “medical” tasks. Shae is already talking about being a nurse when she grows up. In the meantime, she is a busy young lady. She loves to do yoga with her grandmother, saying “moo” instead of “ohm” when they are meditating! Let’s hope that the rest of all the packages life gives to Shae will be filled with good health, happiness and success!
