Have you ever planted a seed and watched it sprout?
There is a magic moment when the seed cracks open and the tiny plant begins to emerge. That’s what happens in the Children’s Art Project’s bi-weekly art class! Art volunteers and staff plant a seed—the theme of the class for that particular day. Moments later ideas begin to germinate and art begins to emerge. Cares and concerns drop away as the young patients laugh and let their creativity develop. Art classes grow more than creativity. Friendship flourishes there as well. Julia, age 7, and Courtney, age 14, are best friends—perhaps unusual when one is in first grade and the other in seventh. Their connection is one that most girls don’t share—they are both fighting cancer. Art class is the perfect place for them to enjoy each other’s company, along with Derac, age 10, also featured on the cover. The harvest reaped from art classes can be found in this catalog. Every product from the Children’s Art Project begins with the original art from a young patient. All proceeds from the sale of these products fund programs that nourish and enrich the lives of MD Anderson’s young patients.

Dave Pasta is one of CAP’s great art volunteers. He brings a wealth of teaching experience to the children. His technique at the Wednesday classes is to sit and draw with the young patients. While he teaches he also listens and laughs with them, gently encouraging their creativity. Like all of the small, select group of art volunteers, he has a positive impact on all the children!
