Riley is one amazing six year old kid! What’s amazing is his joyful attitude and the way he has adapted to a difficult treatment for cancer. When he was two years old, Riley was diagnosed with a rare plexiform fibrohistiocytic tumor in his left arm and shoulder. Both arm and shoulder were amputated in 2008. The first thing Riley asked for when he awoke from surgery was his monster truck toys. Riley took the toys from his mother by holding them with his feet and putting them on his chest to play. At that moment, she knew Riley would adapt and be okay. His amazing adaptation to life continues, especially in his favorite sport, baseball. Riley made the T-Ball All Star Team last summer in Pearland, Texas because he is adept at batting with one arm, catching and throwing. When he catches a ball, he tosses it up in the air, drops his glove on the ground, catches the ball again and then throws it! All of this done in the blink of an eye. Last winter, he went on the Rehabilitation Ski Trip funded by the Children’s Art Project. He adapted to that sport quickly, too, skiing the difficult blue trails before he left. His parents will always be there for Riley. “We will support him in anything he wants to do. We are just glad to help the Children’s Art Project and MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital because it saved our son’s life.”

ranks as one of the world’s most respected centers focused on patient care, research, education and prevention. For nine of the past 11 years, including 2012, MD Anderson has ranked No. 1 in cancer care in U.S. News & World Report’s annual survey “Best Hospitals.” Recognizing the importance of maintaining a sense of normalcy during cancer treatment, the Children’s Art Project combines the excellence of MD Anderson’s resources, with its own unique vision, to provide young patients with an opportunity to create artwork featured on gift merchandise. Each purchase funds important programs benefiting the educational, recreational and emotional needs of patients and truly makes life better for children with cancer.

Richard is one cool dude, and he has all the credentials to prove it! His battle with cancer began when he was 9 years old. Treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer of the tissue, was successful. During his time as a patient, four pieces of his artwork were chosen by the Children’s Art Project and printed as cards (see World Peace page 16). Then we lost track of Richard. Where was he? After graduating from high school, Richard enrolled at The University of Texas at Austin, majoring in engineering. Richard soon decided engineering wasn’t for him. In 2004, he quietly enlisted in the U. S. Army before telling his family what he was doing. The Army trained him as a licensed vocational nurse and then deployed him to a CSH, or Combat Support Hospital, in Iraq. Being a medic in the Army is not easy duty. Medics are targets, because they save other soldiers. They are taught to fight and save themselves and then others. After four hard years in the Army, Richard decided to finish his college degree and become a registered nurse. With that degree in hand he returned to MD Anderson where he is now a clinical nurse, giving back to others with cancer. Richard’s interests are wide and deep. He engaged CAP’s favorite photographer, Kevin McGowan, in a technical discussion of cameras, lenses and lighting, because photography is one of his passions. He loves to play Ultimate Frisbee, a no-contact sport that is rigorous and fun, one of the reasons he is so fit. Somewhere in one of those games he met his girlfriend, another special interest! He plays ping pong with a vengeance, using a custom-made paddle that he crafted himself. And Richard has not left the children of MD Anderson behind. He loved the art classes and Camp Star Trails when he was a patient, so Richard decided to return to camp and serve as a volunteer counselor. The combination of all these skills and interests, plus his concern for others, makes Richard not only cool, but an admirable, caring and successful man.

It all began in the fall of 2008, when Jessica’s big sister carried her off the school bus, piggy back. Jessica was in pain, and they thought she had pulled a muscle in her back while playing volleyball. It was the beginning of a long journey that stretched this family to the limits, but has eventually made them a closer unit than they could have imagined. Jessica’s pain continued that fall. She didn’t gain weight and wasn’t herself. Doctors tested and tested, but they couldn’t pinpoint her problem; Jessica kept getting worse. By March, 2009, she was in crisis. That’s when her dad called MD Anderson Cancer Center. Within a few minutes, he was talking to Dr. Dennis Hughes, a specialist in Ewing’s Sarcoma. Dr. Hughes said, “Get her here as fast as you can!” A very long ten-hour ambulance ride from Mobile, Alabama delivered Jessica and her parents to MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital in Houston, Texas. Dr. Hughes was waiting for them in the lobby at 2:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning. He went right to work! Ewing’s Sarcoma is a cancer of the bone and soft tissue. Jessica’s treatment wasn’t quick or easy, but she has been clear of cancer since the summer of 2011. During her treatment she began going to art classes and discovered that she is an artist. Proof of that? She has five designs in the Holiday 2012 Collection: Adore Him, Holly Boot, Popcorn Tree, Rudy Reindeer and Wood Dove. Now back home, she is enjoying all the things that a teenager who is 16 should do! She loves her friends—especially Rachel and Kennedy—as they eat out, go to the movies, shop and decorate their nails. Cross-country running and soccer are also part of her activities now. But it’s that big sister that is so important. Stephanie chose to go to college in their home city and to live at home so that she and Jessica can stay connected. She recently texted photos of prom shoes to Jessica because she couldn’t decide which pair to buy. Jessica was happy to make that decision for her! As a family, they are happy to be back together!

The Teddy Bear Clinic is a role playing experience for young cancer patients, planned by the Child Life team. Patients and siblings are given a teddy bear to take around to interactive stations representing different departments in the hospital. Patients play the role of doctors and provide treatment to the teddy bears. This activity helps the children to better understand their treatment and also allows staff to interact with patients away from the usual clinical experiences.

Bandar, 13, has battled Ewing’s Sarcoma, a cancer of the bone and soft tissue, for over two years, a journey that has taken him from his native Saudi Arabia to Houston, Texas, USA. During that time, a bone from his lower leg replaced the bone in his upper leg. That surgery put Bandar in a wheel chair for seven months, but it hardly slowed him down. He graduated to crutches and now walks with a cane. The whole process was difficult for Bandar and his family, as it is for all cancer patients and their families, however, Bandar’s family persisted and worked together to overcome each of the obstacles. Today Bandar is an eighth grader in Pearland, Texas, just south of Houston. His favorite subject is not math, but he loves everything else. Burgers and fries— especially organic ones—are Bandar’s favorite food. His mother continues to fix a traditional Saudi dish called Kabsa, a rice dish with meat, chicken or fish. Like the mix of food, the family has adapted well to life in the United States, mixing new traditions and customs with those of Saudi Arabia. Bandar spends his free time playing video games, often online with friends. These games have inspired Bandar to become a Marine someday. Since he is already a U.S. citizen, that’s a possibility in his future. He also enjoys television, movies, and hanging out with friends. With one friend, Jonathan, he enjoys making music. Bandar plays the piano and Jonathan plays the guitar. They have a special bond, because Jonathan’s mother is also a cancer survivor. Where is Bandar going? He looks forward to a cancer-free future, a great education and a bright tomorrow. On a recent drawing of a mountain, Bandar likened his design to his struggle with cancer. He said it symbolizes his mission to get well and climb over the summit to become cancer free. Keep climbing, Bandar! Your family will cheer every step you take!

In 2003, when Kierra was 8 years old, she fell off a seesaw and broke her arm. Her parents felt guilty that they had built the playground in their backyard until doctors told them that she had a cancerous tumor on her arm. The tumor was the reason for the break. Had she not fallen, the osteosarcoma would have gone undiagnosed and her long-term outcome might have been much different. Doctors at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital moved a bone from Kierra’s leg to replace the bone in her arm. Follow-up treatment was not easy, but Kierra’s great family walked every step with her. The family dog, Cameron, knew Kierra was sick before the family and doctors did. The little Bichon Frise would not leave Kierra’s side and continues watching over her throughout treatment. The Kierra—or Kiki—of today is a whirlwind of activity! A sophomore in high school this year, Kierra was named the High School Student of the Year last spring in her Aldine, Texas school. The honor was due to her great grades and involvement in so many activities: Student Council, Girls’ Club, choir, Legacy Foreign Language Club and more. Her favorite subjects are spelling and biology. Kierra also likes to volunteer, reading to children in day care centers and helping out in nursing homes. Laquito and Gregory, Kierra’s parents, believe that their daughter’s diagnosis provided her with a deeper understanding of life and a maturity beyond her 16 years. Kierra loves the camps funded by the Children’s Art Project: Camp Star Trails and now Camp A.O.K for Anderson’s Older Kids. Her sister, Sierra, who is off to college this fall, joined Kierra at these camps. She also loves the art classes. Kierra’s art is detailed, distinctive and always tells a story, because she also likes to write. Her experiences at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital have influenced her in many ways. Kierra’s dad says, “When she completes treatment, she will land back at MD Anderson as a pediatrician.” That commitment to others facing cancer also reflects the generous attitude of her parents, who have given Kierra a solid foundation to climb any mountain or ford any stream.

Thank you for supporting the Children’s Art Project. Riley and I know how hard it is to manage everything when you’re fighting cancer. The Children’s Art Project makes life easier for patients and parents by funding a range of programs that make life more normal for the children. We appreciate your help and send a thank you from all the children—and their parents—at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital.
