It’s still too hot to conjure up a winter wonderland, but things are popping at the Children’s Art Project. Beautiful new cards (including the Popcorn Tree!) are ready to ship, with or without personalization. Ordering personalized cards before October 1st will make you eligible for the Early Bird Discount. That discount includes photo cards as well, and this year there is NO charge for uploading photos— saving you $50! We also reduced the minimum order to 25 per design. Wonderful gifts fill out the 2012 Holiday Collection, available through this catalog or online at www.childrensart.org. Start your shopping early to stretch your holiday budget and insure that you will get the gifts you want. Ornaments come in a range of materials. Decorate your own tree, or gift friends and family with a memorable ornament. Fused glass plates are new this year, and so are the charming Mr. Claus stocking and Christmas pillow. There will be even more wonderful items available as the season progresses, so keep an eye on the catalogs to come—or watch our website! www.childrensart.org Why order early? You will be more organized when the holiday rush hits in November! Also, you will be sending a gift to young patients at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital. All proceeds from the sale of our products are earmarked for programs that benefit MD Anderson’s young patients. These programs include an accredited in-hospital school that keeps young patients up-to-date with their classrooms back home. Two summer camps give patients and their siblings a week to explore and have fun. Camp Star Trails is for children ages 12 and under while Camp A.O.K. includes teen patients and siblings up to age 18. Through these programs and more, you help MD Anderson make life better for children with cancer!

The Teddy Bear Clinic is a role playing experience for young cancer patients, planned by the Child Life team. Patients and siblings are given a teddy bear to take around to interactive stations representing different departments in the hospital. Patients play the role of doctors and provide treatment to the teddy bears. This activity helps the children to better understand their treatment and also allows staff to interact with patients away from the usual clinical experiences.

In 2003, when Kierra was 8 years old, she fell off a seesaw and broke her arm. Her parents felt guilty that they had built the playground in their backyard until doctors told them that she had a cancerous tumor on her arm. The tumor was the reason for the break. Had she not fallen, the osteosarcoma would have gone undiagnosed and her long-term outcome might have been much different. Doctors at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital moved a bone from Kierra’s leg to replace the bone in her arm. Follow-up treatment was not easy, but Kierra’s great family walked every step with her. The family dog, Cameron, knew Kierra was sick before the family and doctors did. The little Bichon Frise would not leave Kierra’s side and continues watching over her throughout treatment. The Kierra—or Kiki—of today is a whirlwind of activity! A sophomore in high school this year, Kierra was named the High School Student of the Year last spring in her Aldine, Texas school. The honor was due to her great grades and involvement in so many activities: Student Council, Girls’ Club, choir, Legacy Foreign Language Club and more. Her favorite subjects are spelling and biology. Kierra also likes to volunteer, reading to children in day care centers and helping out in nursing homes. Laquito and Gregory, Kierra’s parents, believe that their daughter’s diagnosis provided her with a deeper understanding of life and a maturity beyond her 16 years. Kierra loves the camps funded by the Children’s Art Project: Camp Star Trails and now Camp A.O.K for Anderson’s Older Kids. Her sister, Sierra, who is off to college this fall, joined Kierra at these camps. She also loves the art classes. Kierra’s art is detailed, distinctive and always tells a story, because she also likes to write. Her experiences at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital have influenced her in many ways. Kierra’s dad says, “When she completes treatment, she will land back at MD Anderson as a pediatrician.” That commitment to others facing cancer also reflects the generous attitude of her parents, who have given Kierra a solid foundation to climb any mountain or ford any stream.

Bandar, 13, has battled Ewing’s Sarcoma, a cancer of the bone and soft tissue, for over two years, a journey that has taken him from his native Saudi Arabia to Houston, Texas, USA. During that time, a bone from his lower leg replaced the bone in his upper leg. That surgery put Bandar in a wheel chair for seven months, but it hardly slowed him down. He graduated to crutches and now walks with a cane. The whole process was difficult for Bandar and his family, as it is for all cancer patients and their families, however, Bandar’s family persisted and worked together to overcome each of the obstacles. Today Bandar is an eighth grader in Pearland, Texas, just south of Houston. His favorite subject is not math, but he loves everything else. Burgers and fries— especially organic ones—are Bandar’s favorite food. His mother continues to fix a traditional Saudi dish called Kabsa, a rice dish with meat, chicken or fish. Like the mix of food, the family has adapted well to life in the United States, mixing new traditions and customs with those of Saudi Arabia. Bandar spends his free time playing video games, often online with friends. These games have inspired Bandar to become a Marine someday. Since he is already a U.S. citizen, that’s a possibility in his future. He also enjoys television, movies, and hanging out with friends. With one friend, Jonathan, he enjoys making music. Bandar plays the piano and Jonathan plays the guitar. They have a special bond, because Jonathan’s mother is also a cancer survivor. Where is Bandar going? He looks forward to a cancer-free future, a great education and a bright tomorrow. On a recent drawing of a mountain, Bandar likened his design to his struggle with cancer. He said it symbolizes his mission to get well and climb over the summit to become cancer free. Keep climbing, Bandar! Your family will cheer every step you take!
