Something is always cooking at the Children’s Cancer Hospital at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Last December eight pediatric patients worked together and cooked up a masterpiece of gooey icing, colored candies and imagination. Here’s their recipe — you might want to add it to your collection:
GINGERBREAD HOUSE 8 cups of creativity 4 cups laughter 6 tablespoons ginger 2 pints concentration 3 cups cooperation Dash of cinnamon 2 pounds royal icing 4 boxes of shortbread shingles 1 cup friendship 3 cups determination Jelly beans, peppermints, gumdrops and life savers as needed Mix the creativity, cooperation and friendship. Then blend in the laughter, concentration and determination. Season with the ginger and cinnamon. Apply candy and shortbread shingles with the royal icing. Their over-sized house, still sitting in the Children’s Art Project craft room, was photographed in detail. Fadila Farag is a great sugar and spice architect! Concentrating on details, she worked carefully to place each tiny candy in the right spot on the gingerbread house. While she worked, she was able to escape her life as a cancer patient and all the stressful, sometimes painful, things that go with the diagnosis. Fadila, at 10, is also a young entrepreneur with a big heart. For two years she has hosted a lemonade stand in honor and memory of the friends she has made at the Children’s Cancer Hospital at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. She has raised thousands of dollars in the past two years for childhood cancer research. Why is she wearing a mask with her pink dress? Pink is Fadila’s favorite color, but the mask is there for protection. It’s not to protect others from something that Fadila has (cancer is not contagious), but to protect her from other’s germs. The treatment of cancer often weakens a patient’s immune system, and Fadila’s mask is her line of defense. Some patients must be in isolation for specific periods — for instance, after a bone marrow transplant — to protect them from bacteria and viruses that would not harm a healthy person. Others, like Fadila, must be careful wherever they go to protect their immunity. Fadila is a native of Egypt, so her treatment for acute lymphocytic leukemia at the Children’s Cancer Hospital at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, has been a cultural experience for Fadila and her family. She has taken advantage of the in-hospital classroom to keep up with her studies, while her mother has worked with physicisans, nurses, child life specialists, social workers, advocates and others to make sure her daughter has great cancer treatment with support for the whole family. Meanwhile, Fadila has enjoyed summer camp, art classes and several Child Life programs, including many field trips. All these programs — and more — are funded by your purchases from this catalog. Every Tuesday, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, pediatric patients in the Children’s Cancer Hospital assemble for art class. It is part of the in-hospital school curriculum, but school has never been this much fun! The art class combines many of the ingredients in the Gingerbread House recipe. Directed by the Children’s Art Project’s creative wiz, Leon Benavides, art volunteers work with the children to encourage their creativity. These talented volunteers are all former teachers or artists in their own right. They bring a wealth of knowledge to the children, for they are the master chefs and the pediatric patients their apprentices. Cooperation and camaraderie bond friendships among the children as they share paint, markers, paper, scissors or other supplies. Laughter often erupts, as they chatter while they work. Each class revolves around a theme (Valentines, winter scene, flowers, Christmas trees, etc.), but within that simple boundary, their creativity is encouraged and nurtured. The children concentrate on the techniques taught by the art volunteers — water color, pencil drawing and collage to name a few. For all the children, the class is a break from their routine in the hospital — a moment to forget they are cancer patients. The art classes begin a process that circles back to the patients. When a child’s artwork is chosen as a design for the Children’s Art Project, they feel a great sense of pride. They know that the sale of their product contributes to the funding of many programs benefiting all the pediatric patients. The art volunteers are a small group within the larger, diverse group of volunteers who make the Children’s Art Project a great success. In the 2008 fiscal year, 453,000 hours were donated — the equivalent of 217 staff members. Volunteers are the heart of the Children’s Art Project. We couldn’t do without them!

Romika Smith bubbles with energy despite the fact that she is in her second year of treatment for Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). That treatment is never fun, but Romika has managed to find many positive things at the Children’s Cancer Hospital. It was rough at first, she says, but she got used to the routine and met lots of people. She loved the in-hospital school and especially the great teachers. And of course, there was art class. Romika is part of the team that created the Gingerbread House. Her intense concentration as she worked on the project is evident in photos. Whether applying icing or sprinkling sugar on the finished product, it was fun to be a sugar and spice architect! Romika has experienced other programs funded by the Children’s Art Project, including Camp Star Trails and Camp A. O. K. The best part is meeting other kids with cancer who understand what she is going through. She has moved on to a public school for her eighth grade year. English, reading and science are her favorite subjects. When she’s not in school, the series of Cheetah Girls books are favorites. She also loves to talk on the phone with her friends, shop, go places and stay busy. And is Romika planning for a career? She is still thinking, but being a medical examiner is very interesting to her. Her mother says one of the most important things Romika has learned from cancer is to make goals in life and to know that great things are possible for her.
