Response to Spread Remix Starting off with Derrick’s project, I chose one of his original spreads from Project 1.1 Seeing Sound. From what I can recall, his book was about trying to capture a first time experiencing “getting high.” For his spreads, I chose song number 4 by Rihanna called “Pour It Up.” I was really drawn to the images on the left page the image was in color and the right side the image was almost in Black and White tonal range. I did not alter any of the images that were given because I thought they were fine just the way they were. The blurriness and the repetition of the lines depict movement in the image. I looked the song and listened to it a few times before coming up with my interpretation. I chose to break up the images, I was able to mimic the back and forth rhythm I heard in the music. The white space adds to that effect but it also gave the pictures room to breathe. By placing parts of the images on different spreads, I was able to capture how the music made me feel which was dazed and I felt out of control which I think it adds to Derrick’s main theme of the book of capturing a first time experience of getting high. I decided not to incorporate the text that was provided because I did not feel it was suited for the spreads. Maybe if there were lyrics to the song, I would place the text in between the images. In the end, Derrick was pleased with my interpretation of the spreads! For my spreads, Derrick accidentally chose to separate ones but throughout the playlist, instead of seeing a falling in love, having rocky moments and then coming back together love story, he saw a person who was afraid to tell someone how they felt. So what he wanted to capture was that hesitation and fear of telling someone how you felt but also the regret of waiting too long. Derrick chose the black and white to create a mood of seriousness, coldness, and
MMLSC mysteriousness of a situation of telling someone that you like them. He had added additional text from a song called Angel by The XX to really capture the mood. On the image where their backs are turned towards each other, Derrick made a shadow of the guy turning towards the girl because that's what he really want to do but he is too afraid. His mind is saying "wait" but he isn't vocalizing it. Looking back at Derrick’s interpretation of my Mixed Tape, it was interesting how he saw this story to be from the boy’s perspective and not the girl which was the original idea. However, I do love how Derrick changed the colors to black and white to capture the hesitation and fear.
